NC State fires Mark Gottfried

It may be a slow news day for UK sports, but it’s not in the world of college basketball. NC State has fired head coach Mark Gottfried after six seasons. The Wolfpack is coming off three embarrassing blowouts vs. #10 North Carolina, Wake Forest, and Florida State. Gottfried is 122-82 during his time in Raleigh, but this year’s 14-13 mark — 3-11 in ACC play — was enough for NC State to cut him loose. He will coach the Wolfpack through the rest of this season.

Don’t worry, Mark; there will probably be two openings in the SEC after this season if LSU and Missouri keep their horrible basketball up.

Maybe he can go to Indiana. They would love that kind of a record.

He is coaching out the season. I wonder what would happen if he went on a tear, won the ACC tourney and got to the Final Four. Would they stick to their guns or say “nah, just kidding Marky.”

Never been a fan of firing a coach mid-season; don’t think I could continue to coach the team.

It’s always strange. If the players like and respect the coach, they may actually start playing better for him. If they resent or blame him, though, they have no reason to listen to him at all. If he benches them or anything, they can go over his head or their parents complain to the media and the fired coach will just look worse.

he has a top ten recruit on his team. shades of johnny jones going on over there. i think mark is a much better coach than jones, especially considering mark is playing in a tougher conference. I think he was good for the pack but apparently their administration wants them to compete on the same level of duke and carolina which to be fair is just never going to happen.

      Except for 1974 and 1983.
