Remember that time an Arkansas radio host trashed Malik Monk for picking UK?

Originally posted November 18, 2015

Mike Irwin, known as the dean of Arkansas sportscasters, is mad. He mad. He real mad.

Irwin went on a Northwest Arkansas radio show today and gave a perfect, flawless, grumpy-old-man rant about Malik Monk leaving the state to go to Kentucky. Irwin is livid about how Monk turned his back on his home state to join John Calipari’s latest recruiting class. LIVID.

“For two to three years, he played the situation,” Irwin said of Monk. “Don’t tell me he didn’t play it. He got all kinds of favors done, wheels were greased — I don’t think anybody broke any NCAA rules — but favors were done. People helped because they wanted this kid to be a Razorback.”

“He’s nobody. He will become nobody to most Razorback fans,” Irwin continued.

Turns out, Irwin’s real problem is with John Calipari and the one-and-done system. He said, “There’s no words that can come out of my mouth that would more express contempt for John Calipari and what he’s done.”

He sooooo mad.

“Not only is it an insult that it happened, he went to the one place that is just unacceptable.”

Irwin warned Monk, “You better move.”

Sounds like the same situation as Damien Harris picking Bama over UK.

    1. nybrasky

No it doesn’t. What Lexington or Kentucky media member went on a rant against Harris?

Who other than some of the irrational members of the comments section were actually angry? Most people I know, and my recollection from the media reports, were that people were disappointed because they had hopes that UK could pull off the upset, but could not fault the kid for going to the best football program in the country.

    2. Leuther

      You have a point…

    3. ColoradoCat3

That’s not what I was trying to say. The Arkansas sportscaster is completely out of line. We as UK fans were upset when Damien ultimately picked Bama over us, but couldn’t fault him on the decision. Monk was the same way- picked the top school in the country over the hometown team. I’m just saying the recruitment of Monk and Harris played out very similarly. And Kentucky handled the disappointment a lot better than Arkansas did.

    4. UK Big Board Update

“Sounds like the same situation”, just different. lol

    5. Long Dong Silver

Why is my comment still awaiting moderation?

    6. daizon

There is very little in common here other than the fact that a didnt stay at home to play. It stops there.

  2. bluecat15

    Doggone he mad

  3. Phantom

GOOOOOOOD! Let the butthurt flow through you………

  4. UK-Basketball-Freak

The butt hurt is strong with the one known as Mike Iriwin. Hates UK and John Calipari he does.

    1. Suffering Fools

This little one’s not worth the effort.

  5. UKinIN

I love the implication that Monk received extra benefits and Irwin would have kept quiet if Monk had chosen Arkansas. That’s a true sign of integrity and high moral fiber from Irwin. Players chose the school that feels best for them. Deal with it Irwin.

  6. Bluebloodtoo

A grown man who has nothing better to do with this emotions than attach them to a high school basketball player with an insinuation that this guy owes something back to his state university. Does anyone know what percentage of high school sports players that actually end up going to their in state power school (as if Arkansas is a power school to begin with)? It can’t possibly be high enough to justify this guys’ opinion of Malik’s actions. Seriously dude. GET A FREAKING LIFE that doesn’t revolve around high school sports.

  7. BobKYCats

Did…did he just threaten a high school student?

    1. Rixter

That was my take away from the comments, as well. he said a 16 year old kid played a bunch of adults who were trying to play him, then threatened the young mas with some sort of physical assault.

For the life of me, I can’t figure out why Monk didn’t want to play for such a classy outfit

  8. buckeyebuster

    ” you better move “…..Geez man get a life…..

    1. kentuckybackupplayer

Monk did move, to kentucky and then on to an nba city, lots of squirrel hunting outside of arkansas.

  9. GR8TNESS

Please get this guy to come on the show so he can be embarrassed!!!

  10. Big Kat

Wow. That’s an adult. Kind of.

  11. duckhook67

This would be funny if it wasn’t so damn sad…..pretty sure we don’t need ethic lessons from Arkansas.

  12. abelincoln

So let me get this straight.

He hates Calipari for bringing in one-and-dones but is angry his school couldn’t bring in a one-and-done?

He hates money being involved in sports but he gets paid to be part of the sports media?

    What?

    1. jsh2001

Also he wouldn’t be mad if he picked Duke or Kansas… Because they apparently don’t have one-and-dones.

    2. nybrasky

He also added UNC…because they’re a bastion of academic integrity and do things the right way.

  13. foxUK

Made fart noises with his mouth. Professional journalism in Arkansas. Also the most intelligent thing he said the entire time.

    1. kentuckybackupplayer

those were real farts coming out of his mouth dude.

  14. uk11brad

    Wow!! Salty..

  15. jwa

Kentucky fans would be just as upset if a big time instate recruit (not a walk) was given everything by a community in hopes of him signing with the instate university only for him to bolt out the door would make you feel shunned as well. But that is the NCAA and NBA’s fault because its became all about money and its not changing anytime soon. He should probably stop watching college athletics.

    1. KevinM

Isn’t it terrible that someone who knows the rules are applying the rules and still getting ridiculed?

And what sports program isn’t about money? If its not, its not very successful.

    2. real True Blue Cat

Not true. See Damien Harris mentioned above. I won’t cheer for him but it’s his decision and he can make anyone he wants.

    3. daizon

I think its gotten to the point that who cares when we lose a recruit? We’ll get someone else, always do.

  16. catsarerunnin

Ok so Arkansas has been a non-factor in college basketball since the mid 90’s but yet this kid is supposed to go there just because a few Hog fans greased the skids. So he was supposed to play there and not dare go to UK and be a first round draft pick, maybe a top 10 pick? Yeah forget that he’s trying to better himself. Yep he should have stayed there, watch his stock plummet and listen to “soooeeey!!”. Irwin go sell crazy someplace else. We’re all stocked up here.

  17. scwhite9

If he is paid by ESPN, we need to all bombard them with messages. What a doofus. Seriously? He is threatening a high school player and telling him to move. No wonder Monk doesn’t go there. I feel this so-called reporter would think it was okay to bomb the home of his family for disgracing his “ideal” recruitment deal. And, did he not realize that Duke had four one and dones. Dang.

  18. kybigblue

It is very hard to lose a top recruit especially an in-state recruit. But be a man and wish them well. Be an example to others especially young people. It takes no self-control to do what he did. After all we are talking about a high school senior who has his hold life in front of him. I hope this rant doesn’t lead to others taking out their rage on him as he continues his senior year.

  19. Rick_S

What an idiot..He said he would be ok if he wanted to go to Duke (had 3 OAD last year),,,UNC or KU..dam this guy is stupid

  20. KevinM

Sounds like a guy asking for upper level media credentials…..#Goodman

  21. TimothyJinx

Wow, I felt like I was listening to the big, evil teddy bear in Toy Story 3 and Daniel Stern. I really thought the teddy bear guys was going to cry a couple of times. Hilarious but sad.

  22. serdi

I graduated from UK. I have lived in Arkansas 8 years. In my life I have lived in Tennessee, Georgia, Louisiana, North Carolina, and Alabama besides UK. I have never lived anywhere where the anger and hostility exists towards kids who leave their state to go somewhere else to school than Arkansas.

After observing how Archie Goodwin was treated by his home state when he decided to go to UK I actually dreaded it for Monk if he decided to go to UK. I thought for sure he would wait until spring or summer to commit. The abuse he and his family are and will take from guys like this is horrible.

We were all disappointed with Damien Harris’ decision, but he never got the abuse from the media and I would dare say many of the BBN. If we had, it would have been an embarrassment.

This treatment has also happened with football players who have decide to leave the state that Arkansas wanted.

I don’t know how the schedule plays out next year and if Monk will have to play in Fayetteville. When Archie went there the flagrant clothesline foul that brought a standing ovation and a no call told me everything I needed to know about a great number of that fanbase. The reaction to Monk’s signing was exactly what should have been expected.

    1. Bluebros

Pretty sure there won’t be a next year unless a NBA team plays an exhibition game in Little Rock.

    2. Kat4Life

Arkansas fans are pretty one-dimensional…….nothing else to root for really……those Hogs are everything, and god knows it’s hard to recruit an out-of-state 5 star kid to that place…….had to be very frustrating to see a once-in-a-generation talent right down the road spurn the state school for the evil empire…….this clown Irwin is a buffoon…..

  23. confusius

    He a man like..like you a man…

  24. Suffering Fools

Those piercing blue eyes really enhance his red nose.

  25. Bluebros

Using Damien Harris as an example… I was butt hurt for a couple of days when he picked Bama. I didn’t take to twitter or rant on a radio station. I felt that he set us up a bit with the constant visits to games, a huge press conference at his school, UK players/commits in attendance and I bought into all the hype that het wanted to attend UK. After a couple of days, I moved on and I wish him well. Never hated the guy for making the choice… Its Alabama Football!

Monk has been pretty quiet about this recruitment, didn’t string it out until the end, announced his choice via twitter on a Wednesday morning and he was very respectful to Arkansas and all those who recruited him. He couldn’t have been more tactful if he did it over again. The kid picked UK… Its Kentucky Basketball!!

I think the point that this rant was from a member of the “media” is the most troubling. You can be butt hurt all you want but who can fault Harris, Monk or any other high school athlete for picking a school they want to attend.

Big Boy Basketball, (UK, Duke, Mich St, Kansas) can handle losing a guy without blowing the lid. They’re all gonna be alright. This just proves that Ark and its fans are still have a long ways to go.

PS. FUNK Bobby Portis for that cheap tweet and RESPECT Archie Goodwin for holding it down.

  26. BCO

Listening to the hate filled diatribe these lunatics just spewed on an ESPN affliated radio show about a KID who didn’t choose their school…it honestly made me cringe and be sad for humanity. I mean honestly theres butthurt fans but these guys…wow. They just took it to a whole nother level…that was at the least EXTREMELY rude and unprofessional and honestly leaned more towards threats. If I was Monks family Id demand an apology on air.

Usually I cringe when Matt rips someone a new one on the air but I cant wait for this tomorrow.

    1. daizon

We wheel and deal, and bribe this kids familiy, then upset he doesnt chose them. Says we are the disgusting school. What a joke.

  27. bigblueforever

Bobby Portis was not offered at UK! He can tweet all he wants. He was not good enough to play at UK.

  28. W.C.

All this venom coming out of the state that gave us William Fulbright, Bill Clinton, Johnny Cash, Glen Campbell and Bear Bryant. Why, I can’t believe it.

    1. Megan

As Glen Campbell sang on “Hee Haw”:

It’s knowin’ that your door is always open
      And your furniture is gone

  29. urincatland

I’d love to see this guy come on the show today so Matt could nail his ass….. This guy is a JOKE!!

  30. Ken Grizzle

Malik Monk is a young man who will make a lot of money some day playing this crazy game. He apparently has his head on straight and his feet firmly planted on solid ground. I applaud him for having the maturity to make the most important decision in his life thus far and I’m proud that He thought well enough of Kentucky and John Calapari to grace us with his God given talent. Those in his home state should be honored to have him represent Arkansas on the big stage, instead of Tom Cotton and Mike Hucksterbee.

  31. kentuckyrld

It is sad to see a person harbor so much anger especially when it is directed at a child still in high school. Maybe we should just pray for him and ask that he be shown the error of his ways and maybe that in his heart he can learn to treat people properly. While we are at it, maybe we should say a prayer for ourselves and ask that we be protected and kept from having similar thoughts and performing the same kind of actions as this man.

  32. gadgetgirl

Wow, just wow! It is great that he really cares about the kid!

  33. The analogist

    Arkansas saltiness

  34. JC Ice

A poster on their board, that is considered an insider, is saying the game plan is to rough him up.

  35. Sojoe

Let this guy know how you feel:

    @MikeIrwinRazN

  36. sincitycat

If they try to rough him up they will have to deal with Mr. Briscoe not to mention 24,000 UK fans.

  37. theoph

We as Kentucky Football fans can share their pain.

However, if Malik had gone to Arkansas, they won’t be so venomous towards the “one and done” rule as they now proclaim.

Moreover, if John Calipari were their coach and winning championships, they would probably be singing his praises.

So, to me, this is all about “sour grapes,” envy, and jealousy.

  38. raymond white

Sour grapes ! Spit them out or choke to death ! Sounds like you are saying ” He received benefits from Arkansas what did they give him ? The only thing promised by UK to come play and learn with his talent

  39. Rixter

Is this man coming into Rupp Arena tomorrow, after threatening one of BBN’s boys?

I hope he’s ab;e to move fairly quickly, too

  40. chardun20

That whole discussion is embarrassing, they are talking about a kid who didn’t want to go to Arkansas. How many players on Arkansas team would go to UK and play for Coach Cal if they could?

  41. Springfield1154

I mean it was nasty but why do we care Arkansas is a punch line what do they ever win sec runner up 37 times in all sports but for me the best part the sour grapes was not just with cal or monk his own brother in law wasn’t a hog so I guess ur sister made a business decision as well it was very funny I thought it kinda sounded like a snl spoof and like Unc and duke don’t have one and dones ok and cals dirty ok sounded like the Arkansas people and little Nolan were the ones trying to do shady things favors ,jobs, places were bout aau teams paid for But Were dirty lol
