Kentucky’s opponents in the ratings: January 7

(© Marvin Gentry-USA TODAY Sports)

How much did the loss to Alabama damage Kentucky’s resume? Not much, actually. Although the Cats fell five/four spots in the AP/Coaches Polls, they only dipped a spot or two in the Sagarin and NET rankings and even rose in the KenPom and ESPN BPI.

At 10-3, here’s where the Cats and their opponents stand in the rankings and ratings:

  • AP Poll: 18 (Previous: 13)
  • Coaches Poll: 18 (Previous: 14)
  • Ken Pomeroy Ratings: 12 (Previous: 13)
  • Jeff Sagarin Ratings: 14 (Previous: 13)
  • NET Rankings: 13 (Previous: 11)
  • ESPN Basketball Power Index (BPI): 15 (Previous: 16)

My takeaways:

— Even after a close loss at DePaul, Seton Hall moved up in the ratings this week and received votes in both polls. The Pirates are now considered a top 50 team by KenPom, Sagarin, and the NET rankings, which makes Kentucky’s loss last month a little less terrible (I said a little!).

— Elsewhere in the SEC, Florida’s loss to South Carolina resulted in a 21-spot drop in the NET rankings. Ouch. Also,¬†Tennessee is now a top-ten team across the board after being ranked in the teens by KenPom and Sagarin last week.

— Kansas’ 17-point loss at Iowa State dropped them several spots in most of the ratings but only two spots in the AP poll. Meanwhile, Kentucky dropped five spots in AP poll after losing by two on the road at Alabama? Hmm. Iowa State is a great team, but once again, the media is giving Bill Self’s squad a bit of a cushion. With Udoka Azubuike now out for the year, January 26’s game at Rupp doesn’t scare me quite as much as it used to. (Knock on wood)

— MONMOUTH WON TWO GAMES, GUYS. If you’ve followed this weekly post, you know I’m a huge fan of King Rice’s group, which got its first win of the season in overtime at Penn last Monday night, no small feat. After crashing back to Earth with a loss at Iona on Thursday, they bounced back to beat Saint Peter’s on Saturday. Way to go, Hawks!
