Kentucky loses third straight game, falls in College Station 85-74

© C. Morgan Engel | USATSI

Kentucky just lost their third game in a row for the first time in the Calipari era.

And if it weren’t for a late run by the Cats, they would’ve been run out of the gym in College Station.

From the 16:29 mark to 11:13 remaining in the first half, the Wildcats went scoreless, their eighth five-minute scoring drought of the season.

For those keeping track at home, Kentucky has lost in every one of those instances.

After the drought, however, the Cats managed to fight their way back for a 30-26 lead in the first half. The Aggies were ice-cold from the floor, but continued to jack shots up, finishing just 2-14 from the three-point line at intermission. The Kentucky defense zeroed in, and the offense followed it up by finishing on three consecutive baskets to turn a 26-22 deficit into a four-point lead.

To start the second half, however, the Aggies jumped out on a 17-2 run, and the Cats never managed to climb back. A&M made a complete turnaround from their cold streak in the first half, starting the second by going six of six from deep.

Missed defensive assignments, blown offensive rebounds, crucial turnovers, not getting back on defense, poor shot selection, etc. You name the negative, you saw it in the first ten minutes of the second half, and there was nothing the Cats could do to make a full recovery.

Like we’ve seen in each of the last three games, Kentucky made a late push, but the comeback effort came far too late. The Aggies held a 23-point lead with just under six minutes remaining, but the Cats managed to cut that lead to eight with 57 seconds remaining. After the foul game commenced, A&M hit four consecutive free throws to push the lead out of reach, and Kentucky’s third straight loss was finalized.

To put the icing on the cake, the Texas A&M student section sang the Happy Birthday song to John Calipari on his 59th birthday.

The entire Aggie starting lineup scored ten points or more, led by TJ Starks with 17 points. Robert Williams and Tyler Davis, A&M’s dynamic duo in the frontcourt, combined for 24 points, 17 rebounds, and six blocks. It was an all-around beatdown to bring the Texas A&M winning streak to four games.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander held up his end of the deal, leading the Cats with 19 points (9-12 shooting), eight assists, three rebounds, two steals, and two blocks. From the start of the game, he was able to get wherever he wanted on the court at will, and continued to prove he is the best player on the team.

Kevin Knox also found his shot, finishing with 18 points on 7-15 shooting and 3-5 from behind the arc. In each of Kentucky’s runs throughout the game, Knox converted on big shots, including one huge three at the end of the game.

After contributing absolutely nothing in the first half, Hamidou Diallo finished fairly well, scoring 13 points on 5-11 shooting with two rebounds. Quade Green added eight points, four rebounds, and an assist in 26 minutes of action. Jarred Vanderbilt also managed seven points and seven rebounds, and provided just about the only bit of consistent energy on the Wildcat roster.

PJ Washington was a force on the glass, but the Kentucky frontcourt was mostly a no-show against the talented Aggie big men. Wenyen Gabriel, Washington, and Nick Richards combined for just nine points total on 3-14 shooting, with an even worse performance on the defensive end of the floor. With Sacha Killeya-Jones out tonight, there were glaring holes here.

Brad Calipari even got some run in the first half, leading the entire team with a plus-four on the day. (Yes you read that correctly.)

With the Cats heading to No. 8 Auburn on Wednesday night, a four-game losing streak is staring us right in the eyes.

We’re officially in danger territory, folks.

I think we should play Brad more! The guy shoots the 3 like Jimmer Freddette

  2. DelrayCat

OK…I’m going to try to be the voice of reason here.
Yeah, this season is shaping up to be a disaster. But I think we all were fooled early on with their relative success. Yes, this team is incredibly young….but more than that…they are weak.
Weak in body AND in mind.
Let’s wait and see what happens and see who stays first before jumping to conclusions.
We know we have 3 high-quality guys coming in and will likely only lose 2-3 guys.
Regardless, of the outcome…we will be fine. Cal is not going anywhere and we should all take a deep breath and realize there are many many good teams out there full of grown men who have been around the block a few times.

    1. bigbluenation90

High quality? If Shai don’t come back we are in trouble. Tyler Herro is a 0

    2. CombatMedic_98

      U r absolutely an idiot!

    3. bigbluenation90

      We are terrible this year!

    4. CombatMedic_98

I hope Hero doesn’t go to Oklahoma like Trae Young did…Lord help us if we don’t get Hero. He is the only solid, consistent shooter I have seen in a long time. cal wants dribble drive guards and power forwards. It ain’t working. We win Championships with true shooters! Not a bunch of overrated AAU KIDS!

    5. DelrayCat

Even though the Cats are highly unlikely to make any noise this year…it is refreshing that almost every good team is full of upper class players. Even then, almost every team is up and down and anyone seems to be able to beat anyone else on any given night. Parity is good folks.
Hopefully some cool Cinderella story emerges and some team like Xavier wins the title.

    6. ilovekaturday

Tyler herro wonder boy it’s a wonder he even has a scholarship offer from us

    7. bigbluenation90

Tyler Herro can’t guard a parked car

    8. justaguyinthebackrow

You never know where the voice of reason is going to come form these days. So true, Delray, so true.

    9. syrin23

I see the idiots bashing on Tyler, perhaps the only player Cal has recruited in the last 3 years with actual basketball skills. But yeah, let’s look at more dunking highlights because that’s what wins you games, dunks, not hitting open threes. You pick on his defense? You watched Hami, PJ, Richards? What an idiot. They need to create a new stat for PJ, assist for the opposite team.

    10. bacnine

Winning NCAA or SEC championships is not important to Cal. The most important thing is to get these players ready for the NBA draft. Remember June 2010 —-when five players were selected in the first round of NBA Draft- Cal made the absurd statement. “I’d like to say it is the biggest day in the history of Kentucky’s program,”

  3. ilovekaturday

I agree I mean we’re missing Malik monk we don’t have that guy when we can’t do anything productive that just throws it at the rim and it goes in

  4. jahanc2uky

Next games starting line-up: Green, SGA, Knox, Vandy, Gabriel. Hami, PJ, and SKJ off bench in that order… Richards & Brad for emergencies ONLY!

    1. ilovekaturday

Dude what are you talking about you have no idea what you’re saying Brad is our ONLY SHOT MAKER DUDE

    2. FACTS

And yet he hasn’t made a shot. Hmmmm…. maybe it is because he is too fat and slow to get open

  5. callitlikeiseeit

Remember that Vandy game, you know that team that loses 2 of every 3 games they play. You know the team we last beat….errrrr…..gave us a win. Yes our last win was at home by 2 points vs that power house team where they once again missed free throws to hand us a W or we would already be at 4 straight losses and at 5-7 in SEC with the NIT as almost a lock. No wonder the guys did the dog pile after that HUGE win, is a very important win for UK right now. Just sad this team can only win that game by 2 and Vandy was missing a starter.

  6. makeitstop

If they ALL came back there’s still no KAT, no Fox, no Davis – no Wall and Cousins… no Randle or Murray for that matter. they just don’t have the future nba star that can pick u up and carry u when the wheels come off, like tonite. They have guys who will make rosters and make some money but no stars. BUT u can win in college w experienced guys with a little less talent. Next year we could have that. This year we just don’t.

    1. Brian in Franklin

They ALL won’t be back though, that’s just it. Knox cam play half ass like he does and still go to the NBA. Some of the others can as well. I’m thinking at least 3 will be gone. We can’t even say “just wait till next year and these guys will be good”, because they won’t ALL be here.

  7. ilovekaturday

Tyler Herro couldn’t stay in front of a vegetable with a dead battery in their wheelchair

    1. ilovekaturday

What the hell is wrong with you clown

    2. njCat

Jeez…you bitchin about players that aren’t even here yet? That’s a special kind of putridity. You a Russian bot or something ???

    3. ilovekaturday

Are you just stupid? Why wouldn’t I be bitchin he’s not gonna be good? I mean isn’t that our problem now

    4. syrin23

And neither can Hami, PJ, etc., but Tyler can go 9 of 10 from behind the arc, f’tard. And stop making fun of your dad, he prefers to be called a fruit, not a vegetable.

  8. binarysolo

You folks get so mad like these kids owe you something. They don’t. I’ve learned to enjoy the revolving door of a program Kentucky basketball has become. The years we luck out with a good crop of freshmen — great! Some years, like this year, we have freshmen who don’t live up to expectations. NBD, you root for ’em anyway and send them on their way.

These kids might be talented but they just haven’t figured it out. They might not figure it out in time. So what? Life goes on.

    1. justaguyinthebackrow

OMG it’s someone with reason and a sense of proportion. God speed, sir, but these idiots won’t listen.

    2. Ashleehutch

Say it again for the ones in the back!!!!

    3. syrin23

So you prefer an apathetic fan base? Who will pay for all the things the program wants?

    4. catsarerunnin

Yes I prefer a fan base full of lunatics and not those who are reasonable…

    5. Skeps

Those kids don’t own me anything and I sure as hell owe them anything . I have no problem with any of them. Some of them don’t have the talent to be here. Cal messed up on evals.

  9. Ashleehutch

Hahaha you idiots who are talking crap about Tyler Herro obviously don’t know crap. Might wanna take a look at him first, smh I hate stupid so called “fans”

    1. ilovekaturday

Maybe you watch him he’s terrible if you like getting blown by on D then he’s a stud

    2. syrin23

But you love the guys we have who can’t play D, AND can’t shoot. Bravo brave f’tard. Bravo.

    3. ilovekaturday

Bravo moron I hate em all they all suck we suck you suck your username sucks our athletic department sucks Rupp Arena sucks

    4. ilovekaturday

And most importantly Matt jones sucks

    5. catsarerunnin

Well you are right about one thing at least.

    6. syrin23

You really like to suck. Must get that from your dad.

    7. catsarerunnin

      Flattery will get you nowhere…

  10. Halfway 2 BioHazard

Don’t worry, these kids will make it in the NBA. That’s the goal, right?

    1. catsarerunnin

Yes ever since Rupp was on the sidelines.

  11. jkcor

Here’s a fun thought. We go into the NCAA tournament as a 16 seed and be the first one ever to upset a 1 seed.

    1. callitlikeiseeit

Another fun thought…We go NIT and get a revenge game vs Robert Morris. NCAA gift to Cal, revenge factor, etc….what could go wrong.

    2. ilovekaturday

Here’s a fun though you never comment again

    3. njCat

Was about to suggest the same to you ‘love’.

    4. syrin23

I have watched Virginia, Purdue, Mich. St. and Villanova. They would DESTROY us.

    5. catsarerunnin

Yes and then they would join the Klingons for interstellar domination.

    6. bacnine

Here’s a fun thought we don’t get in the NCAA or NIT

  12. Cousins Fake Tooth

    This team just flat out….SUCKS.

    1. catsarerunnin

Life isn’t all marshmallows and lollipops. You will have to face that harsh truth someday.

  13. bigbluenation90

Tyler Herro will get exposed on defense just like Kyle wiltjer

  14. ilovekaturday

Why do y’all think Tyler herro is so good he’s terrible hes not even the best white boy in the program that’s Brad

  15. SanDiegoCats

I’m a die hard uk fan but my god. No wonder our fan base has such a bad reputation. We have guys on here who are criticizing defensive struggles from a player who hasn’t even graduated high school yet.

    1. ilovekaturday

      Did you graduate high school?

    2. catsarerunnin

Well we all can’t go to Yale like yourself.

    3. SanDiegoCats

      Good one

    4. ilovekaturday

Serious question? Yes or no? Sound it out with me did……you……..graduate…….high…….school?

    5. catsarerunnin

    6. syrin23

And the only player who has basketball skills. Every freshman comes in and plays awful D, yet these idiots are picking on him just because he’s white. These are the same guys who thinks the only stat that matters is your vertical because the team with the best vertical wins, not the team with the best shooters. Don’t forget, guys like this take anal protein injections on a daily basis from a relative.

    7. CATandMONKEY

      Catsarunnin FTW with that reference.

Every single person who knew that line read it in their head in Turtorro’s accent from the movie.

  16. SanDiegoCats

I’m guessing by the fact that you’re up posting on a blog about a high school kid at 1:45am that I have at least 8 more years of education than you.

  17. ilovekaturday

You’re also posting on a blog about a high school at 144 am so I’m guessing I have 16 years more education than you lol

    1. SanDiegoCats

Only 10:45 on west coast. I can still be in bed at 11.

    2. syrin23

Your posts show why Common Core is a disaster.

  18. ilovekaturday

So you’re a bandwagon fan okay just clearing things up thanks surfer boy

    1. SanDiegoCats

    2. syrin23

Says the f’tard already picking on our only incoming player with actual basketball skills.

    3. ilovekaturday

lol says the retard that doesn’t know basketball skills he sucks dude

    4. Skeps

You’re a troll, we get it. Not a good one. Next troll up.

  19. bigbluenation90

Do you all seriously think we’re gonna be any better next year because of Tyler 0? Seriously

    1. ilovekaturday

THANK YOU!!!!! We outta name him Tyler 25 cause that’s how much he’s gonna he giving up every night

  20. bigbluenation90

He probably isn’t even gonna play and transfer back to Wisconsin once he realizes Cal is going to force him out!

  21. ilovekaturday

If cal can’t just roll the ball out there and the kid be a stud he wants him to leave

  22. Angelo

Basketball is a team sport… Cal can’t get these nuts to work together…

  23. UKinIN

If Brad Calipari is ANYONE other than the coach’s son he only sees the floor with the rest of the walkons. I’m not bashing Coach Calipari or his son. It the reality of the situation. This team’s problems are youth and a lack of elite talent. Calipari is a great coach. No one could win consistently with this roster. They need another year. Calipari has to replace his most talented players every year and this year he didn’t get it done. Doesn’t mean he can’t coach. Means recruiting has been down.

    1. ilovekaturday

He can’t coach and he’s getting out recruited by coach K

  24. PkP_UofK89

We’re a young team. We start all freshman. But I like my team. We will figure it out. These kids just need to buy-in. I have faith. These are good kids. We’re the youngest team in the universe. We will figure it out. I’m not cracking yet. We’ll figure this out. This team still wants it. We’re the youngest team in the country. We will be fine. I like my team. This team needs to buy-in. Guys, we’re young. But I like my team. Anthony Davis was the 5th highest scorer on the team. We will figure it out. No team is younger than us. We’ve got work to do, but I like this team. I’m not in panic mode yet. We’re playing for MARCH.

    1. PkP_UofK89

We start freshman. We will figure this out. These kids are young. But they need to learn to buy-in. I’m not cracking yet. This team is young. Who else in the universe starts 5 freshman. We’re young. We’re still freshman. I need them to buy-in. We’re fine. Guys, we’re a young team. Should I remind you that Anthony Davis was the 5th highest scorer on the team?

    2. PkP_UofK89

At the end of the day, we’re a young team. Youngest in the country. But we’re playing for March. I like my team.

  25. bigbluenation90

    Season is over

    1. catsarerunnin

Oh ok so should I pack away all my UK gear?

  26. Jarisn02

Its Sunday morning and I’m still crying. We’re paying a coach 8 million to lose to Missouri without their star player and less talent. Texas A & M is a football school. All KSR did before is say Rick Barnes can’t coach….well what does that say about Cal? Rick Barnes can’t coach and has less talent yet he is taking Cal to the woodshed. I’m through with this team and I’m tired of Cal. Lets get the movement started….Fire Cal.

  27. catfan7379

Cal is gone once brad graduates. Wait and see, it will happen.

    1. catsarerunnin

      You must have ESPn.

  28. luke_emberton

Remember it’s not about winning National Titles it’s about ending generational poverty

  29. 502CodeRed

Cal needs to start playing Bonnie Tyler’s “I Need A Hero” in practice. It worked for Shrek, might work for this team too.

    1. catsarerunnin

Or in your case ding dong the witch is dead.

  30. BonnieTayshaunBilly

This place is like a pack of starving hyenas. We lose 3 straight for the first time under Calipari? First time! It looked like Cal was coaching to me. He was trying. That said, I almost turned off the game last night and I never do that. Unless we get hot, we could be NIT bound. I guess we suck this year. It happens. I’m sad and disappointed. I don’t understand the anger though? This team, to me, is not infuriating like that year Poythress stepped out of bounds every play or Goodwin charged every time he touched the ball. This team just doesn’t seem to care. Are they going to care in the pros? I don’t really want BBNBA highlights from anyone in this group who leaves after this year.

  31. makeitstop

Why in the world would people on here be picking on a RECRUIT? Did they work at a Manhattan diner, being so rude to customers they just dare them to eat there? C’mon. U think Duke blogs are attacking Barrett or Williamson? I have no idea if kids read this but I sure hope they don’t or we have met the recruiting enemy and he is us, not Duke.

  32. makeitstop

And how many great high school defenders have u watched on film? It takes strength and stamina and mental focus, as well as footwork which is studied not intuition, to play good defense for the entire play, and kids simply don’t have that coming out of high school for the most part.

  33. klassact32

Why is it people can not be critical of a team and not considered a fan? This team sucks, I know that, you know that and everyone else does as well. Doesn’t mean I won’t stop watching or praying for a miracle. You don’t think they know that? Don’t give me this load a garbage about not being a fan for acknowledging the truth. it is not the end of the world. The sun will go down, the sun will come up and tomorrow will be another day. Fans are allowed to be critical, to complain when things are not going well and to cheer when they are.

    1. catsarerunnin

Well kinda like if you told a friend they sucked you wouldn’t really be a friend. It’s in that vain.

    2. BonnieTayshaunBilly

A real friend will tell you when you suck.

  34. my2sense

The person with the most hustle on this team is Cal. Our kids just quit playing in the second half. I think our biggest problem is in the locker room. These players appear to not get along and a couple of times even PJ and Hamilton exchanged glares last night. So I don’t know what Cal can do to get these guys to buy in and it bring this late in the season. This is a down year for us and I don’t see it getting much better unless players like Hami getting on the TEAM wagon and off the ME wagon.

  35. catfan7379

Sure miss guys like Murray and ulis who had heart. As a fan these guys was why I loved watching the cats play. I watch ten minutes of this team and change the channel. I can’t stand them, I hope everyone of them go pro. Gimme some guys that want to win for Kentucky and not worry who has more minutes and points. Kentucky needs a pro team about the worst.
