Kentucky in a four-way tie for fourth in the SEC

Last night’s loss to Tennessee not only knocks Kentucky out of the race for the SEC regular season title, it means the Cats are in serious danger of having to play on Thursday at the SEC Tournament next month. Right now, Kentucky is in a four-way tie for fourth with Missouri, Mississippi State, and Alabama.

STANDINGS CONFERENCE OVERALL
SEC W-L GB PCT W-L PCT STRK
#8 Auburn 9-1 .900 21-2 .913 W5
#15 Tennessee 8-3 1.5 .727 18-5 .783 W6
Florida 6-4 3 .600 15-8 .652 L2
Missouri 6-5 3.5 .545 16-8 .667 W3
Mississippi State 6-5 3.5 .545 18-6 .750 W4
#24 Kentucky 6-5 3.5 .545 17-7 .708 L2
Alabama 6-5 3.5 .545 15-9 .625 L1
Arkansas 5-6 4.5 .455 16-8 .667 W1
LSU 4-6 5 .400 13-9 .591 W1
Texas A&M 4-6 5 .400 15-8 .652 W2
Georgia 4-6 5 .400 13-9 .591 L1
Ole Miss 4-7 5.5 .364 11-13 .458 L4
South Carolina 4-7 5.5 .364 13-11 .542 L4
Vanderbilt 2-8 7 .200 8-15 .348 L2

Based on tiebreakers, Missouri would get the No. 4 spot, the final double bye. With seven games left, including matchups with Auburn, Alabama, and Missouri, there’s still plenty of time, but…man, that double bye would be nice.

St. Louis going up on a Thursday?

We knew this season was going to be rough. But not this rough.

  2. Willis talkin bout....

Honestly.. I don’t care if they get the bye.. This team needs as many games as it can get before the NCAA.

    1. UKPROF

      NCAA? You mean N.I.T.?

  3. DelrayCat

If the Cats can’t win their 3 remaining home games and at least 1 road game….they are in big trouble. 21-10 likely gets them in regardless of the SEC tourney (unless they get smacked in their only game in St. Louis)
Anything worse than that…and they’re going to need to win a game or two in the SEC tourney just to get in to the big dance. Better right this leaky, quickly sinking ship…quick.

    1. catsarerunnin

Oh my the sky is falling. If we don’t make the tourney all life as we know it will end. It will be real wrath of God stuff. Human sacrifice…dogs and cats living together…mass hysteria!!

    2. BigBlueNationDude

Runnin is hilarious. Defends this team even if they are NIT caliber.

    3. KYJelly

This is a blog dedicated to Kentucky sports (manly basketball), so yes the sky is falling if we don’t make the tournament within the reasoning of why we all visit this site.

    4. catsarerunnin

Well not all think that way.

    5. Ched17

I think that 20-11 gets them in the tourney actually. This a bad year of college basketball so far. North Carolina is a projected 4-seed at 16-7. We are projected 5-seed at 17-7 with the hardest remaining schedule in our conference. I think the Cats could go 22-9 at the end of the regular season with a couple changes and some luck. I think the tourney is a safe bet just because the SEC is so tough this year. Remember we were a bubble team in 2012-2013 with a 10 loss team and an SEC that was ranked behind the Mountain West Conference in strength. Now, the SEC is probably the best conference in the country wise. I think 20 wins gets them in. Now the seed would be low obviously, but still in the dance. I keep going back to Brandon Knight’s team with this years, for some reason I get that feels from this team, maybe it’s all the close games. Knight’s team went 2-6 on the road in the SEC and couldn’t win close games. All those close games helped in the tourney and they found there talent, dominated the SEC tourney, and went to a Final 4. They were a Kemba Walker epic game from a NT shot. I’m optimistic that they can do something like that. Maybe not a Final 4 but make some noise.

22-9, LOL.. 21-10 at best. Need 2 wins in tourney for 6 seed or better.

    7. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

And BigBlueNationDude and UKPROF are UL trolls. If I’m wrong, then you are among the perpetually miserable.

Look, maybe we’ll be a first round exit or an NIT team, I don’t know. However, the awful loss to SC in 2014 was on MARCH 1!!! Then we lost to UF by 18 or 20 only a week later…then…the tweak.

Just because Dan Shulman yelled “It’s February!” doesn’t meant we can’t turn it around. I don’t know, he doesn’t know, you don’t know. Trust Cal.

What I’m trying to say is…R-E-L-A-X!!!

    8. BigBlueNationDude

      Relax. This is too funny.

Michael porter jn dunking in practice. Does anyone think this team can win 4 games in a row in tournament format. They have time but they look worse today than they did a month ago. My buddies and I have a room at the Westin downtown, it’s not close to stadium but real close to the new stadium entertainment.

  5. Eazy

SEC is loaded this year. 11 wins over Top 15 teams out of conference. Most in the country by far. Should get at least 8 teams in the tournament. UK will be primed to make a run due to the strength of our schedule I hope.

    1. UKPROF

LOL, loved that ‘I hope’ at the end of your comment. If this teams is eliminated early in the SEC tournament, there will be NO NCAA bid.

  6. Jiminy Crickets

We’re in tie for 4th today, but lose 3 of next 7 and we could be playing on Wednesday. We’re only one game ahead of 10th place

    1. Jiminy Crickets

One game ahead in the loss column.

    2. catsarerunnin

I hope you can survive the impeding doom.

    3. catsarerunnin

      Impending

    4. Jiminy Crickets

100 to zero bet I’m more likely to survive than you are

    5. Jiminy Crickets

Facts apparently hurt feelings on here.

    6. catsarerunnin

Lol takes more than that to hurt my feelings. My life won’t end or change if the Cats don’t make the tourney. If you want to go out on a ledge, feel free.

  7. secrick

I’m ok with a Thursday game, don’t see the big deal about it.

  8. BluKudzu

I will be there whenever they play.

    1. Jiminy Crickets

Lol, I’ll be there Friday and Saturday. Booked rooms 6 months ago, woulda never dreamed they would start on Friday, and rooms at $425/night I’m just hoping they make it to Friday.

    2. Jiminy Crickets

      Wouldn’t start on Friday

    3. BluKudzu

I have to work that week in St Louis, and the company has corporate suites throughout the tournament.
      I volunteered to go.

It is what it is. Like Matt says, some of our guys weren’t as good as we expected. This is what happens when we hang our hat on the unknown: the quality of incoming freshmen. If they figure it out by March, great. If not, there’s always next year. Nothing to get worked up about.

I’ve heard Thursdays are tons of fun

Okay so this UK team is struggling. I get that but I also believe in our coach and in most of these players. SGA is a winner, were his plays at the end of the game good? No they weren’t but when you drive you have to have someone move to be your outlet and that didn’t happen. Quade too is a winner, he constantly makes big plays. His he selfish at times? Yes. It was inexcusable to not throw the lob to Vanderbilt on that fast break lay up. Knox is the same way at times. Even his and 1 he had to guys wide open filling lanes to his left and he never even looked at them. There are some things to ‘tinker’ as Cal would put it and he needs to step up, swallow some pride, and make those real true adjustments. The defense is getting better, the press was excellent against Missouri. Caused chaos and easy buckets for our squad. Easy buckets is something this team desperately needs. They are long and ridiculously athletic. Pressing is a key adjustment for this team. Vanderbilt, PJ, SGA all have huge wingspan for there height. Richards is a very athletic big man that can run enough to be in during the press. Wenyen was built for the press and SGA is under control enough not to get to ahead of himself. Quade is quick and can finish around the rim. Diallo’s athleticism would help in spurts during a press but he’d have to be watched closely for mental errors. Unfortunately SKJ would be basically obsolete if they did go to a press or a run and jump type trap defense. This team would thrive in that environment, in my opinion. The buckets would come easier and the confidence would grow. That would allow our only two shooters (Knox and Green) to get into a feel for there shot and hopefully start knocking down some three’s. This team has playmakers and shooters to go 6/18 from three. That isn’t great but that’d be enough to win these games. Make the defense space out and SGA could get into the lane and make plays. He’s smooth, solid defender, and finds ways to get off his shot. Also a chaotic pace or trapping type defensive effort would allow for Vanderbilt to get the ball in space, which would surely be ideal for his playmaking abilities. His vision is excellent but if he’s only passing to open shooters that are Diallo and Washington then those passes go to waste. This would require this team to give maximum effort all game and fight hard for loose balls but those are fixable things. Everything with this team is fixable besides the inconsistent shooting. So how do you get more consistent shooting? By getting better shots, how do you get better shots? It starts with pace and defense. The D has improved against Tennessee and Mizzou but the pace is off. This team needs a faster pace to allow those athletes to make plays within their game. A faster pace can actually hide there lack of overall basketball skill and allow them to just be athletes. It’s not perfect, it wouldn’t be pretty but it’s the best chance this team has to win. You have to adjust to your players. We have athletes that we are trying to force to make skilled basketball plays. The game is easier with athletes but if the athletes don’t have true basketball skill or are lacking it in some way then you have to let them get out and run. This team and do that, the press may be the best thing for them. Clearly walking it up the floor and starting an offense with 10 seconds to go in the shot clock isn’t working. Just a thought.

By the way, all 3 of the 3’s we made against Tennessee came off of a good shot within the offense. They were 3/5 from deep with shots like that. Knox had a nice extra pass to Green. Green’s second was off of an offensive rebound. Wenyen’s three came off of a pass from Shai after he got into the lane by a Richards screen. Quality deep looks and they went in. I hope this team can watch the tape and see how those went in and the others didn’t. 3/5 ain’t bad, especially when it was Washington and Diallo that missed the other 2.

Just my two cents on what could work. I ain’t know coach, I just love watching basketball and think that maybe it’s worth a shot at pressing.

    GO CATS!!!

Ched, if you’re going to compose a tome, at least mix in a few paragraph breaks.

    3. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

      A few more I mean…

    4. Ched17

Yes sorry, I agree. I just got into the points and lost my proper grammar for a while. My fault.

  12. Blueballz

    Cal…doing less with more…

  13. jahanc2uky

The last thing thus team needs is a double bye. This team needs as many games as possible.

  14. BigBlueNationDude

    Woohooo 4th place. We suck

  15. Azulgrande75

I’m certain we will have to play Missouri in St. Louis (home game for them) probably Friday, then we are at the mercy of the committee. Our fate will most likely be a beating at the hands of Purdue in Indianapolis the first weekend. BTW, I’ll come help Diallo pack his bags. He’s become worthless and won’t buy in to playing defense at all.
