John Calipari, Bill Self don’t like timing of SEC/Big 12 Challenge

Has SEC Basketball outgrown the SEC/Big 12 Challenge? On today’s SEC Teleconference, John Calipari said that because the league has improved so much, the event only serves as a distraction in the middle of conference play.

“To play this at this time of the year, I’m not for it,” Cal said. “The league is good enough that we don’t need something in the middle of our league that takes us away from league play to prove how good we are or not. I don’t think, other than a tough game in the middle of your league schedule, it serves as anything.”

Cal said when he was at Memphis and UMass, his teams needed events like this to boost their resumes because their conferences were so weak, like SEC Basketball was when the SEC/Big 12 Challenge was created in 2013; now that the league is sending eight teams to the NCAA Tournament, that’s no longer the case.

“With this, I’m not so sure. But if it ends up being good for both leagues, then so be it. I’m just saying, this league is hard enough we don’t need anything in the middle to say, this is how good we are, this is how good they are.”

During his press conference this morning, Kansas coach Bill Self agreed.

Like it or not, the SEC/Big 12 Challenge is coming. Here’s the schedule:

Love the rivalry game and the way cals teams are built he should be happy we get a crack at Kansas later in the season. I’m all for it. Get Indiana back on the schedule sometime. I’d love to smack them around every couple years.

      Agree with everything you said

  2. JTHinton

Wish auburn and Tennessee were in it so we could see how the top of the conference stacks up with the big 12

Tennessee is playing West Virginia. But I do wish Auburn, LSU and Mississippi St were playing in the “challenge”

The good thing about the challenge is that it gives us another name opponent later in the year instead of just having one crazy two week period in December before we’re even good to play all the name opponents out of conference.

I agree with the previous comments. Coach Cal should want all of the tough games played in January or February. We are almost always a mediocre team in November and December.

No doubt, we DO NOT need this game early in the year. Sure, if we had enough 3-4 year players. Be we never do. These kids are not ready late November early December.

Cal needs to quit his whining. I’ve been looking forward to this game for a long time. Basketball is just a game, and for entertainment, therefore I believe the timing is great. Cal has been awesome at UK, but somethings he does gets on my nerves. Yes we need and want this game on the schedule.
