Jarred Vanderbilt is doubtful for NCAA first weekend

Kentucky will likely be without Jarred Vanderbilt when the Cats begin their NCAA tournament run in Boise later this week.

On Monday’s SEC teleconference, John Calipari said he doubts Vanderbilt will play against Davidson or in the second round if they advance.

“My guess would be hard this weekend,” Calipari said. “He wants to play, but I don’t see it right now, being able to put him in there and feel comfortable about it.”

Kentucky was fine without Vanderbilt in three SEC tournament wins, but can they keep it going without their best rebounder? It looks like they’ll have to, and then we’ll revisit this conversation about Atlanta if they survive Boise.

Go Cats.

I know this is not the only factor but Vanderbilt’s lower body strength has been a concern for a while.

He as a really buff upper body and a really skinny lower body. I wonder if that contributes to his injury prone nature.

    1. Shagaris Sock Puppet

Most superstar athletes never touch weights til college, especially basketball players. Id say if that’s the case, before he got here his foot was injured. Was sidelined all first half of the year. So in theory he never was able to workout his lower body with all the injures hes had. I assume he just worked his upper body and thats what you see.

    2. BigBlueNationDude

Such a lie and very wrong shagaris. Most of these guys start lifting before they start high school.

    3. 4everUKblue

Keep hoping Slater will stop posting stupid shit but there is no hope in sight.

    4. Shagaris Sock Puppet

Yea ok, keep telling yourself that! Why would a high school freshmen that play basketball every day all day, lift? I would bet you every bit of my money if you asked coach Rob the trainer, he would agree with me. I would bet it with a ton of confidence too. I actually played and coached highschool ball, all the guys I played with and coached, didnt lift. If they did, they still didnt have a clue what they were doing and only did enough to squeak by.

    5. BigBlueNationDude

You ppl must have never lifted weights. They all start young. Skinny IT computer nerds

    6. MadHatter

      Shagaris,

      *Trump voice*

      Wrong!…

  2. Ukfan1010

Dang it! I would’ve loved to see a match up with Vanderbilt and Ayton if we got past Davidson! He would’ve been the one guy that I would have felt comfortable with possibly containing Ayton.

    1. unbridled

i will believe Vando NOT playing against Arizona when I see it. I’d say sitting out this past weekend is killing him.

  3. DG

Total prima donna. Missed first half of season with Cal keeping him out so it doesnt expose him like diallo has been all year. He should not even be allowed to travel.

He let his team down once again, completely soft and only worried about NBA future.

This BS him and cal pulled will not work in the big boy league. Can not wait for him to leave. Goes for Cal too.

    1. CATandMONKEY

THIS, kids- is why you don’t drink and post.

    2. Han

Don’t you have an NIT game to worry about?

    3. Booby Petrino

good lord. Go away. Or is this satire?

    4. DG

I’ll accept you three’s written apology when they get sent home after Arizona game.

    5. henderblue

      What a total idiot

    6. RealCatsFan

Fake post by a University-6 fan who is salty about being left out.

    7. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

I think Slater/ BBNDude created yet another account.

    8. coachc90

You’re a complete moron, DG. The kid has played in 14
straight games and got hurt again. I’m betting you’ve never played/coached one second. You know less than nothing about it. Go cheer for the Cards- people like you are why everyone says UK fans are the worst.

    9. DG

No clue who those 2 are. I am just trying to call a spade a spade.

    10. Cokely53

Clearly a Louisville fan butt hurt they missed the tourney so they thought they could ruffle a few feathers

    11. Booby Petrino

You can keep looking for a written apology but it will never come. Because your comment is beyond ridiculous. Even if we do lose to AZ, that doesn’t mean we would have won if JV played. And it doesn’t mean Cal isn’t a good coach. It will just mean we lost to a good team. There is no coach I’d rather have for my team than John Vincent Calipari.

    12. unbridled

What an insufferable fool. I didn’t know so much stupidity could be condensed into just a few sentences. I really didn’t and I’m actually kinda impressed.

    13. BigBlueNationDude

Good point dg. Knew all the ksr cult members would freak out

    14. 4everUKblue

Yep Slater has created another account, can’t be two bigger idiots in the entire commonwealth. Nice try Slater but you’re just not that slick

    15. unbridled

It’s not even trolling….it’s just obscenely stupid. Go back to the drawing board and do some self reflection. If you really want to troll….fine, but be good at it. Up your game because you are embarrassing yourself.

  4. Alex90

A week is plenty of time to heal from a sprained ankle with the medical attention he will get. He could probably play Thursday off needed but they will play it safe for Arizona. This is just Cal talk…he still has 4 days to heal

    1. Sentient Third Eye

I dunno. It depends on where the ankle sprain is. If it’s a high-ankle sprain, those can take 2–3 weeks. But I hope you are right and this is just Cal’s gamesmanship. Maybe we try to get through Davidson without playing Vando and then spring him on a Zona team that did not bother to prepare for the injured guy.

  5. bhb71

I’m a lot less confident about playing Arizona without having Vando down low. He’s the one guy that can mitigate UA’s rebounding advantage over us. I doubt that Cal actually sits him in the event that we play UA in the second round.

  6. mm40

If he is still doubtful for this week then the injury is more than just a sprained ankle.

  7. Sentient Third Eye

PJ is gonna have to show up again, and a Nick Richards sighting would be nice as well…

    1. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

Not to be unkind, but I believe the Richards ship has sailed for this year. I hope I’m wrong! I would love nothing better than to see him & SKJ go all Marcus Lee against some people, especially if Jarred can’t play against Zona.

I think it’s up to SKJ to fill that void if necessary.

    2. Shagaris Sock Puppet

Im with ya man, Richards I love ya buddy, but work on your game and come back stronger and more skilled next. SKJ looked ready and he even produced huge with the dunk. That kind of play is what we need!

    3. BBNBRIAN

We cannot afford to have Nick on the court in the NCAA tournament. Tennessee made their run on Sunday after foul trouble forced Cal to play Richards. He is a big kid with a ton of upside, but he plays too soft and his hands are made of stone. I have never seen a guy with his size tip/tap/swat at so many loose balls. REBOUND! Use TWO HANDS! Once Nick’s skills finally match his the size then he will be an asset, until then – keep him on the bench! I hope next year is a different story, but I don’t seen him “coming on” all of a sudden in this post-season.

  8. luke_emberton

I get not playing home Thursday or just playing him sparingly but cmon we need him against Arizona this is stupid it’s a sprained ankle but a brace on it and play

    1. Booby Petrino

you don’t even know how bad it is. All sprained ankles are not the same. I don’t want him playing if he feels like he shouldn’t. I don’t want him injuring himself worse, I am okay with putting his health over our team.

  9. Daddyof3Ballers

He will dress Thursday and they will make a decision after warm ups…..

  10. Jiminy Crickets

Without vando, Ayten will own the paint. We have not seen anything close to the 7’0 frank athlete he presents. If anything at all, vando gives us 5 fouls and time for PJ/SKJ to rest. I’m hoping this is coach speak

    1. MadHatter

I thought we had to beat Davidson first?

  11. rickwhitetx

If I’m an NBA exec, I’m wondering why it takes Jared so long to recover from injuries? Is he worth taking is he’s going to be injured most of an 82 game season?

    1. Shagaris Sock Puppet

you have no clue so why even try and act like you know what youre talking about?

  12. Duuuuuude

I think we best not be looking past Davidson.

  13. tmcclan16

Hope is ok and there is not more to the injury. See ya next year Kid!

  14. Lip Man 1

I suspect it won’t matter either way after Saturday. “One and Done” And that’s is hoping they can get a one against a Davidson team that shoots three-ball’s like crazy.

    1. Booby Petrino

you were probably predicting one and done in the SEC tournament too

  15. Racerr11

Cal the best in the country at developing and having players ready at tourney time. No one better. U6 fans go to the cards site then maybe they will have one or two.

  16. bluemoonofkentucky

    We’re looking like a well-oiled machine at the moment….
If we’re down and clearly lacking energy…. AND JV is truly ready to go….. t
hen put him in, otherwise keep on rolling WILDCATS!!

  17. bluecrowe

Wow…I was thinking it was possible it was a high ankle sprain and now I think this possibly confirms it. This changes everything. If nothing else we need his 5 fouls against Ayton. I hope he can play.

    1. MadHatter

Did the game with Davidson get changed to a bye?

  18. Megan

How much of this is Calipari protecting his own image? We saw this when Vando wanted to play earlier in the year. Cal said he wasn’t going to bring the kid back too soon, the way Coach K did with Harry Giles. He wasn’t going to open himself up to criticism and second-guessing if Vando reinjured himself. We’re seeing the same kind of image sensitivity here.

Anyone remember Kirk Heinrich? Suffered a terrible ankle injury in the first game of the NCAA tournament. It was bad. He thought it was broken. They put a brace on it that prevented him from moving the ankle in the plane that was injured, and he was back playing again two days later. And he played well. Roy Williams had no misgivings. Heinrich was a lottery pick. Chicago took him with the 7th pick of the 2003 draft, injury notwithstanding.

So c’mon, Cal. If you want to do what’s best for the player, don’t baby him.

    1. Booby Petrino

Cal doesn’t worry about his image. Actually I think Cal enjoys the bad guy image. But he’s just not willing to push his players to play through injuries, and it’s silly to fault him for that. Just bc it worked out fine for Heinrich doesn’t mean it will work out for others. If he did play JV and he ended up injured even worse, that’s something Cal would have to live with and not you…so of course you can talk crap bc you don’t have to live the reality.

    2. Sentient Third Eye

A lot of time with ankles, it depends on exactly where on the muscle the sprain is and where the athlete normally puts pressure on it. If he gets twisted around and sprains a part he normally does not put a lot of pressure on, he can be going in a day or two. If the sprain is right in the part that does all the hard work and where his weight goes every time he jumps or moves, he can take a month.

It’s kind of like turf toe. It’s almost become a joke injury, but if it’s in the right spot that makes it almost impossible to play through the injury. And it also takes a long time to heal.

  19. Booby Petrino

Also, did I miss the post about JV getting his hair cut? lol KSR usually makes a post when one of our guys gets his hair chopped off like Vando did.

  20. Catlogic15

It would be nice to have Vanderbilt for Arizona to give minutes (and fouls) while PJ and SKJ rest.
However, remember we were 14-3 without Vanderbilt and 7-7 with him, albeit with more difficult schedule. We looked great this weekend without him. Tennessee is legitimate.

  21. JPGott2

We need Vano for his hustle, rebounding ability and most of all….his 5 fouls. with him available we can can rotate and mix up enough combinations of front court players to never be in fear of someone fouling out. Without him, we need our 4 bigs to stay clean for portions of the game.

If we can just get 1 or 2 early fouls on Ayton, that would be huge.

  22. chief_cat

Even if Vando was ready to play, I’m not sure Cal would announce that right now. Why not keep opponents guessing as long as possible. I’m not saying that he will be ready to go Thursday/Saturday, but if I were Coach Cal I would be saying exactly the same thing right now.

  23. BigBlueNationDude

Such a joke. Hes too worried about his draft stock

    1. makeitstop

Cal said he wanted to play but he (Cal) wasn’t sure he could go, and added during the SECT that u couldn’t go at 80%. So “worried about his draft stock” is unfair, and probably inaccurate.

  24. BluKudzu

Didn’t Jeff Sheppard sprain his ankle pretty bad, as in a high ankle sprain and was back within a couple of days in the tournament? He ended up winning “The Most Outstanding Player” award for the 1998 NCAA tournament. that was 20 years ago, surely medical technology for high ankle sprains has increased since then. Right?

I remember the images posted of Jeff’s ankle during the coverage of the championship game, and they were some frightening ugly images. Most thought it was a miracle he was able to play, much less get the tournaments “Most Outstanding Player.”

I am kinda thinking like MM40

  25. makeitstop

Davidson beat a team in RI w an RPI better than us at the time. They were 16, we were 17. Today, we’re 10, they’re 19 but that’s what we face Thursday. If anyone is looking past them, I hope the closest they get to the Court is a big screen, bc they can beat us. Don’t think they will but they are good. Vando has been out long enough to be rusty, he needs to play some Thursday to be effective Saturday, if there is a Saturday. He was JUST getting into the offensive flow when he got hurt, irs going to take some court time to get back. And as noted above, good luck w ‘Zona’s big man if Vando can’t go. He’s a beast. Nick better grow up in a hurry if JV can’t play.

There is some deja vu here. For those old enough to remember….in 1996, pitino guides uk to become national champions. One year later, just a couple months after a horrific, supposedly season-ending injury, Derick Anderson is cleared to play by team doctors. Pitino says he will play in the Final four/championship game…

    http://www.enquirer.com/editions/1997/03/18/spt_uk.html

But 3 days later, Pitino gets cold feet, and keeps Anderson out of the championship game except to shoot 2 free throws. Anderson and his family pleaded to Pitino to let him play. But after his March 18th press release, Pitino gets cold feet, and says he cannot risk Anderson’s pro career by letting him play against Arizona in the championship game. Everyone applauds Pitino, because he cares more about his players than anything else. I may be dead wrong, but I will go to my grave believing that Pitino thought he could beat Arizona WITHOUT Anderson (game went to overtime). If he wins, he is a great human being and even greater coach for not playing Anderson. If they lose, he has an excuse….Anderson did not play, because of his love for his player. I think his ego, to over-rule team doctors and specialists cost UK a national banner that year, and what might have been a 3-peat….1996, 1997 under Pitino, and 1998 under Tubby. Just an old man’s opinion.

    1. BigBlueNationDude

He certainly should have played. No doubt
