Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was a guest on Kentucky Sports Radio radio Wednesday morning to chat about his All-SEC freshman year in Lexington and the road ahead in the NBA. The decision to leave was one of the first topics of discussion, and though he is projected as a lottery pick, Gilgeous-Alexander insists it wasn’t easy to leave Kentucky after one year.
“It was definitely a hard decision,” he told the show. “A lot of kids think I’m crazy for saying it was a hard decision, but Kentucky is like home to me, like a second home. As soon as I stepped on campus I was welcomed by the fans, and that’s why I’ll always say the fans are the best in the world — there’s nothing like Kentucky. You really get comfortable out here and you like being comfortable, and some things in the league can be a little crazy and the support’s not there. But I just talked it over with my family and coaches.”
When asked what John Calipari told him throughout the decision-making process, Gilgeous-Alexander told the show, “He said I have to chase my dreams and when an opportunity presents itself you gotta take it because you never know what could happen. But he was for my decision either way. He was going to support me. He just had his input.”
