Gators take big hit with key injury

You can’t find a team playing better basketball than the Florida Gators right now and that only makes today’s unfortunate injury news even more devastating to the Gators’ hopes for a big run in the postseason.

The injury is to John Egbunu, Florida’s 6-11 center, who left last night’s game at Auburn with a knee injury. Today it was announced that Egbunu suffered a torn ACL and will be out 10-12 months, thus ending his junior season in Gainesville.

Egbunu was averaging 7.8 points, 6.6 boards and 1.5 blocks this season, putting him among the top-1o players in the SEC in both rebounds and blocked shot. He had eight points and seven rebounds in the win over Kentucky.

Justin Leon and sophomore Kevarrius Hayes will see expanded roles down low in his absence.

Damn man, I wanted Florida to take a downturn, but not like this. That’s awful, I hope his return timeline moves up, that’d suck if he isn’t even back until halfway through his senior year.

Hayes has a lot of potential. He may be a better ball handler, scorer, free throw shooter than Egbunu but because of his smaller frame Hayes is the not rebounder or defender that Egbunu is. The same holds true of Leon. Egbunu at 255 could push people around.
