Doug Gottlieb: “Everyone except maybe Knox should come back”

It’s been a while since we’ve heard from our old pal Doug Gottlieb, but after sitting near John Calipari at the Texas A&M game to do the radio broadcast, he’s got some thoughts to share on this Kentucky team. Gottlieb may come off as a troll sometimes, but he does know basketball, so this is pretty good stuff.

From his Twitter (@GottliebShow):

Sat right behind Coach Cal tonight calling the game on radio. Here is my biggest takeaways:

Cal holds guys accountable for bad shots and missed assignments. Guy messes up, he yells at him, happens again he points at him and takes him out and explains to him. Kids need this.

Cal is very aware of who is playing hard/well and who isn’t and he adjusts accordingly. Every player wants a coach to see what is really happening – he does – it just takes him a bunch of substitutions to find it. You better have confidence to play for him.

The only negatives I see are:

  • The style this team might need – diamond press/swarming zone or switching man— he doesn’t seem to truly love like a more traditional man-to-man/run and jump press.
  • Also his offense needs some updating and refining. He is used to having far superior talent – that ball needs to move, but also there needs to be more purpose for the ball movement – their stuff is super basic and gives player space and freedom… this team just isn’t good enough to score that way

He finished with this:

Hard to argue with that. For more, follow @GottliebShow.

Yep, pretty much what he said. I do appreciate that he gives an opinion that is based on up close observations and actual basketball knowledge, and not just regurgitating what everybody else says.

    1. jahanc2uky

Agreed. Agreed. And Agreed! Hope Cal thinks Gottlieb knows what he is talking about to at least try it.

  2. DelrayCat

Buried in there is sort of an indictment against Carl’s coaching prowess. He basically called him out for his limited grasp of offensive sets and stubbornness to always play man-to-man.
Is that how y’all read into i?

    1. tree_gardener

That’s exactly how I? took it

    2. ClutchCargo

He specifically said the word “style” and didn’t mention coaching ability at all So, no.

    3. tree_gardener

      What I? thought exactly

    4. bosch8184

Correct. “Super basic” isn’t a compliment. It is also, very accurate.

    5. BBNDan7

We’ve all known for 9 years now that Cal runs super basic offense and wins with defense. If we get into run and gun games we lose. So yeah, it seems accurate

    6. J-Dub421

Did it occur to you that our offense is “super basic” right now for a reason? We have a team full of freshmen, they likely aren’t ready to implement a complicated offense for this reason.

    7. timbo

^^^he (J-Dub)thought before he spoke…how refreshing on here!

  3. Duuuuuude

All the one your kids play at Duke now.

  4. bosch8184

    In summary:

This team isn’t very good, the offense is “basic” and lacks ball movement and he should consider playing zone and pressing based on the personal he does have.

True UK fans, not mouth breathing fan boys, have been saying this for months. But getting ragged on by Matt for it.

  5. Shagaris Sock Puppet

Ive been saying it for weeks now and its obvious that there is zero ball movement to keep defenses honest. No cross court passes or great movement to find shooters. Theres a ton of dribbling and hand offs and then the rest of the guys just camp on the 3 point line and watch. The defense does not have to work and only stop the penetration. Once that happens we often throw a bad pass, take a bad shot or turn it over. We still have time and if they do get an offense that they can thrive in, they can for sure make some noise with all the young talent we have. The one player I have to say im disappointed in the most is PJ Washington. He started making strides and then just lost it. Hes been worse than Poythress as far as disappearing with no presence.

    1. KTR2786

Well just like he said, Cal is used to superior talent and he creates situations that give mismatches and space to great players who can either score or pull the defense towards him which opens other options. When you don’t have superior or confident players, it just looks like a team going through the motions and then standing around.

    2. secrick

Washington doesn’t get the ball anymore. Get him the ball and clear out and he will score. l

    3. Shagaris Sock Puppet

He gets the ball, but when I see him with the ball its usually with a WIDE open 3 point shot the past few games. Honestly, is that the shot you want a guy with his skills taking? The word position-less, I feel, was going to be Cals new recruiting pitch if what he envisioned worked. Well it has not so far, so we dont need most of our tallest guys camping at the 3 point line waiting for shots they cant consistently make (Knox and Washington). We get a ton of open looks, we just cant make them when they’re not taken by guys that need to shoot them. PJ should be getting touches 15 feet in. This is not a dribble drive team, except for Shai, who else is getting to the rim at ease? *Crickets chirping* We need guys doing what they do best. Thats Cals job to figure out and he still has some time. The position-less approach though is killing us right now.

    4. timbo

Good and fair analysis. Knox IS shooting 35% from 3, though. That is a very respectable ratio.

  6. luke_emberton

He’s a lot like Dakich in the sense that he’s a troll but they both know their stuff and they not do their homework he couldn’t be more right

  7. Swizzle

But fingers crossed diallo leaves too. #notgood

    1. Booby Petrino

really? next thing you know, you’ll be complaining about wanting players to stick around more than one year. just not this player, right? smh

    2. Rembrandt

So, everyone knows Diallo would benefit and become a much better player by returning for one more year with Cal. But your fingers are crossed that he will leave after this season so a true freshman and a redshirt freshman with a knee problem can inherit his wing position next year. Right, that makes a lot of sense.

    3. Shagaris Sock Puppet

So in theory no player is good that comes here unless they are dominant from the damn get go? People here have no basketball IQ and talk about the players not having it lol I bet the majority of the people talking like that probably never even played high school ball in gym, let alone for the school.

    4. catsarerunnin

This time last year there were those on here saying if Cal would just play Hami we would win a title. Now many of the same people want him gone.

  8. KYJelly

Look, Cal can run an offense and is a great coach, his time excelling at UMass and Memphis with a lot of 3-4 star guys shows that, but now Cal is a basic offensive coach because that’s what kids want. Top recruits don’t get excited hearing about what plays you’re gonna run, they wanna hear the freedom that dribble/drive offers. As we’ve seen, Cal will change this depending on the team he has when the season gets going, I think the problem here is it’s hard to get an offensive gameplan with how limited we are offensively.

    1. ClutchCargo

Exactly. You have to get to the point where you are consistently executing before you can start changing the gameplan.

  9. The Professor

Knox will go but he will be in the G League. He is our worst defender and an inconsistent shooter. However, he does have the raw essentials the league looks for.

    1. jaws2

The guy HATES contact. I’ve watched him in 2 games literally RUN from contact. Just look at him run away from the A&M guy going to the hole in the second half. I was embarrassed for the kid.

    2. jaws2

Oh I forgot. I even ran this back so my wife could clearly see it and she laughed at him! Sad man.

  10. bigbluenation90

Knox, Shai, Vanderbilt and Brad will go because they are lottery picks

    1. ilovekaturday

Brad is gonna be a better Kyle Korver.

    2. Booby Petrino

Brad will be more successful in his future than either of you losers.

    3. bigbluenation90

Do you think I care what you think? This guys name is Booby Petrino. Well Petrino is a lot more successful then you loser.

    4. ilovekaturday

lololololol someone is in his feelings booby can I ask you something? Are you upset? It’s okay you can talk to me about it.

    5. catsarerunnin

I’m thinking ilove is maybe 12. 14 tops.

    6. ilovekaturday

I’m thinking your opinion is irrelevant.

    7. catsarerunnin

      I’m thinking I don’t care.

    8. ilovekaturday

I’m surprised you’re thinking period. Don’t hurt your head doing that be careful.

    9. Booby Petrino

Runnin, by their spelling and grammar I’d say katurday and 90 are no older than 7.
You guys sure do spend a lot of time thinking about Brad. Gay much? Not the there’s anything wrong with that, it’s cool, just be honest about it. #bradlovers

    10. ilovekaturday

Judging by your obsession with Bobby petrino are you gay? Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Just be honest.

    11. bigbluenation90

Booby Petrino might play with himself at night due to the thought of Bobby

  11. ukkatzfan

Gottlieb, Bilas, Vitale….Espn needs to fire all 3.

  12. kentuck1

Their chemistry has not been there since Vanderbilt was inserted into the line-up? And he is a very talented player. Also, it doesn’t take a genius to notice that teams recognize that Shai is going to drive for the basket. The defense shrinks in to guard against his drives, leaving the corners open. He needs to recognize when they are collapsing on him and get the ball to an open man. He is trying to do too much, imo. Washington should set up at the foul line, for the drive or the shot. They are sometimes so obsessed with finding their man on defense, that they forget where the ball is?? Always play the ball ! The big men are not contributing a whole lot at this time. Vanderbilt is their best rebounder, followed by Washington. There is no reason he cannot play more minutes. As a team, they are not very good with the man-to-man defense. This is meant to be constructive criticism, not criticism of the team. I think they are trying very hard to be the best they can be.

    1. 96ChampionBestTeamEver

I never thought about that, but everything did go even more south after he was inserted in the lineup. That’s interesting. Only exception is the WV game, which is looking more and more like an aberration.

  13. 96ChampionBestTeamEver

Knox should be the only one to leave, but no way in the world will he be the only to leave. At least three will leave, ready or not. And then probably some transfers. Hopefully we won’t be in the same situation next season. My concern is not unique – 1. Cal seems to be missing recruiting targets 2. The system he has used up to this point at UK only works with cream of the crop freshmen 3. Every team that has ever succeeded at under Cal had at least some contribution from upper class players, even the 2012 team.

I’ll be glad for someone to tell me why I’m wrong. This feels like the 2005-06 season which began a four season streak where we were a middle of the pack SEC team until Cal came. The SEC is loaded with great coaches and for some time to come is going to be far better than at any time in Cal’s tenure, if ever. I just see a rough ride ahead.

  14. BigBlueNationDude

Cal needs to go and players need to come back

    1. J-Dub421

You need to go and not come back.

  15. sweet wm

    Another 3 yrs/4-5-or 7 yrs…Laziness is Laziness

  16. bluecrowe

None of the guys we have deserve to leave. They are children who cannot play defense, shoot or pass. I was thinking how excited we would have been ten years ago to have this team and be thinking about how they would have matured and developed into fairly decent college players by their Junior and Senior years. It is an entirely different world, but somebody needs to be honest and tell these kids they will be riding buses for the next 3 years if they leave UK. We would have 3 or 4 more titles if Cal could stomach playing zone or pressing on occasion. If you are going to recruit all these ridiculously long, athletic kids for the love of God, press and zone! One way to keep these children engaged in the game and alert is to make them press. I say it is worth it.

    1. jaws2

We had several games that IMHO we didn’t have enough abled bodies to press. Other than those, I’ve said since game 4 we should be pressing constantly. The length and athleticism we have has been completely wasted. Sorry to say, but That’s on Cal.

  17. Rabbi Li

Some of what Wallet Thief said matters.

The part about Cal’s O & D sets is useless… if Cal could get these guys to run the basics right, he’d move on to more sophisticated stuff.

There is also the amount this group can comprehend. So far it’s not much. Cal can only give them what they can remember. It’s a limited drive this year.

Calipari has let this be clear multiple times (people must not know how to listen).

  18. Cryingtheblues

Facts are this team isn’t very good!! Yeah 5* players but we’re not getting the ELITE 5*.
