Dominique Hawkins: “I’ve got the whole state of Kentucky behind me”

SEC-5361

What’s been the secret to this Kentucky team coming together in the past month? The seniors. Senior leadership may sound like an oxymoron for most John Calipari squads, but Dominique Hawkins, Derek Willis, and Mychal Mulder have become integral components to this team’s success, Dom and Derek in particular. For that reason, Cal invited all three to come to the podium with him to preview Northern Kentucky today.

“This is a team that I’m really proud to be coaching, a young team, but you’re also seeing three seniors up here who carried their weight, took over this team when they needed to, were able to step back when they needed to,” Cal said. “Servant leaders, all three of them. They’ve had a big impact on the year, and it’s just fun to see young guys come together with veterans and figure it out together. This team is slowly becoming that team.”

A large part of Kentucky coming together is Dominique Hawkins stepping up and taking a leadership role. Dom has waited patiently in the shadows the past three years, but he said this season, he knows he has teammates and the state of Kentucky behind him.

“It’s been unbelievable,” Hawkins said of his senior year. “This season has been my best season. A group of guys that actually wants me to be successful is what motivates me. My teammates want me to do good. I want to do good for them. I’ve got the whole state of Kentucky behind me. Kentucky kid. Everybody’s rooting for me to do good.”

Yes, we are.

Good post Tyler. The word oxymoron reminds me of a kind of funny story, at least it might be to long time NASCAR fans who know who I’m referring to, otherwise you probably won’t understand the humor. Anyway, years ago Mike Joy was in the booth for TV covering a race, Buddy Baker was one of the “expert” commentators being a retired NASCAR driver. Now I’m sure Buddy is a smart guy but he talks country as heck and comes across as not being the sharpest knife in the drawer. Jimmy Spencer was still an active driver and was driving in the race that day. So as they were going through the running order of the field talking about what car and driver were running where in the race Jimmy Spencer’s car comes on the screen. Buddy says something to the effect of, “There’s Jimmy Spencer in the McDonald’s car he’s running 20th right now, looks like Jimmy is biding his time, showing a lot of patience today “. Anyone who knows NASCAR and Jimmy Spencer knows he hasn’t ever been called patient anytime in his career, his nickname is Mr. Excitement mainly because he always pushed the issue, never giving any car a spot regardless of what lap it was and this a lot of time caused spins, wrecks and physical confrontations as Kurt Busch can attest to. So having heard Buddy’s statement Mike Joy comments, “Jimmy Spencer and patience, isn’t that an oxymoron?” To which Buddy Baker replies in his North Carolina country drawl, “No I don’t think he’s a moron at all I think he’s a very intelligent individual.” Mike Joy was silent and had no reply and quickly changed the subject, how he didn’t break down laughing I don’t know. Good ol’ Buddy Baker, ya gotta love him!

Alot of us in Ohio are behind you as well Dom. I love, and miss, the days of seeing kids grow to young men for 3 to 4 years while playing their hearts out for UK. They played here because it was UK and meant something to them. You are special to us, as was D Miller.

RichCity is definitely behind you. Win or Lose, BRING IT.

We’ll need Dom, Derek, and Mulder to play big roles if we’re gonna make a big run. If Willis can keep pounding the boards and being a threat from deep and Mulder will step up and make a few 3’s we’ll be fine. You know for a fact you’ll get 110% effort and hustle from Hawkins. Plus if Monk were to get hot…I don’t think there’s a team in the nation that can handle us if it all clicks. GO BIG BLUE BABY!!

Dom and Derek and the whole team have far more than just Kentucky behind them.

I’m in NC right now, but my time in Kentucky helped mold me into the person I am today, and the person I hope to be.

It’s funny. You wouldn’t know that Dom has a beard for the ladies or that Derek plays Yu-Gi-Oh cards if they hadn’t hung around, and they wouldn’t be who they are to us without that.

There’s a funny thing that happens to us when our guys get the spotlight on them. We remember why we fall in love with teams. We fall in love with our love being returned to us.

Why do we love John Wall, or KAT, or Boogie, or, AD? Why? Because they return our love. Our guys….Kentucky guys, return our love. Perhaps we should come together around this team because true Kentucky guys are its heartbeat and its energy and soul.

I consider Kentucky my home. I have deep ties to life long friends there, and I hope to return and open my flagship restaurant there as a chef.

Dominique Hawkins is the best player on the team. It’s easy to see.

There might be some younger guys who have significant potential… but the BEAST is friggin’ obvious…

Check these fools Dominique… Take them to the edges and break them at the top!!!
