CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein stays hating on Kentucky, per usual

Scrolling through the Twitter-sphere this lovely Sunday evening, I happened to stumble upon some back and forth action between our fearless leader, Matt Jones, and CBS Sports’ Insider Jon Rothstein. Now, I unfollowed Rothstein a while back because he typically is the type of writer that tries to rile up big fanbases to get clicks. That’s not to say he isn’t talented or doesn’t know what he’s talking about most of the time. However, he’ll do little things fairly often that prove that he either doesn’t like Kentucky for whatever reason or that he knows that getting the Big Blue Nation involved with drive up his numbers of responses, retweets, likes from other fanbases, and tweet interactions as fast as possible. This is the same guy who posted a story in the pre-season that was headlined “With the addition of Reid Travis, Kentucky remains at number six in the @FanRagSports Preseason Top 25”. At the time, not only was it a little out there to rank Kentucky outside of the top 5, but to headline your story with a team not moving in your rankings is nothing but absolute comedy and the definition of click bait.

Last Sunday was no different for Rothstein, as he did his weekly top-25 college basketball rankings. Big shocker here, he didn’t have Kentucky ranked at all. Yes, it is true that Kentucky had two losses on the year, and even though one was a blow-out, it was nearly two months ago and was to a top-5 team. Also keep in mind that there were 8 other teams in the AP Top 25 that had two losses other than UK. But apparently, at 8-2, coming off a nearly 30-point win over Utah that week, Kentucky didn’t deserve to be ranked. Fine, that is his opinion, and some shared that opinion.

Moving back to tonight, Rothstein released his rankings for this week and this time he has THREE LOSS North Carolina, who just lost to Kentucky yesterday, ranked in a better position than Kentucky. As Matt shows in his tweets below, it makes absolutely no sense. Rothstein has no basis for it, which is why he only brings up pre-season rankings of Auburn and Tennessee to defend himself. UNC may have beaten Gonzaga, but it was at home, and their best win outside of that game is over a 7-5 UCLA team. Other than the Kentucky loss, their two losses are to 7-4 Texas and a top-5 team, Michigan.

So let’s compare the résumés. Both teams have a top-10 win. Both teams have a top-5 loss. Both teams lost to one opponent they shouldn’t have, UNC to now 7-4 Texas and Kentucky to now 9-3 Seton Hall. Head to head, Kentucky won in a relatively convincing fashion, showing they were not only better offensively, but better defensively and tougher in the paint and on the boards. Carolina also has one additional loss than UK. Needless to say, the argument speaks for itself. It is a bogus take and shouldn’t be taken seriously.

Seton Hall beat us, should they be ranked ahead of us? Look, even in the regular poll UNC was 9 and we were 19th. To be fair I dont expect us to jump them and if we do it will be UK 15th and UNC 16 or 14th. Your argument is where he had UK with in the beginning.

    1. kycatshoops

ESPN did the same thing. Not only that, they had UNC at 13 and spent one of the three sections about how UNC beat Gonzaga. Written before the games were over.

    2. JASUN74

I agree with you 100% maximumscott.

  2. Carcrook

Winner, Jon. Sorry, Matt he smoked you, pal! Go Cats.

    1. Parker_UKFanNC

      Lol funny joke

    2. Skooms

Must have seen some different tweets, cause the only thing Jon was smoking was some good green when he responded.

    3. CATandMONKEY

      False, Carcrook.

  3. N-UR-i

It dont completely disagree with his arguement. But, with that being said, we should be ranked in the top 15. There are not 15 teams that are better.

Not to sound like a homer but Matt is 100% right. The rankings are just stupid and the xplanation defies logic. Just stupid. I don’t think there is an anti UK conspiracy, just stupid people doing ranings who have no clue. Even the announcers yesterday sounded disappointed that we beat UNC. Just pathetic

If it’s a total body of work thing…we still only have one strong win on our resume. Once we beat L’Ville and Kansas, we’ll get our respect

    3. stunninsteve

Matt is an immature, insufferable know it all sometimes, but he’s standing up for our team while being employed by the “worldwide leader”, shows some balls. Respect

    4. Skooms

Rothstein always tries to get fanbases riled up. That’s why you’ll usually see his picks and polls completely different than his coworkers. Honestly kinda seems like he doesn’t work well with Parrish, Norlander, and Palm.

  4. BLUEVADER

We owned the whole game and controlled it. We should be at least ranked 1 spot ahead of them but his poll don’t mean shit anyways!

    1. jaws2

      Nah,this GUY doesn’t mean shit!!

  5. Wade

I don’t care our rank now but after we beat Louisville we should be top 12! Were young, growing, and getting resume building wins! Starts with the first one against nc! This guys just a hater but not far off in rank! We need to prove night in night out who we are and I believe we’re ready! We have found an identity and I like it! Team chemistry starting to look right! And hagans wow !!!!time for nick or ej to break out, I’d take both! If that happens it’s over well have an entire team of guys and trusting the coach and each other. Not to mention the secret weapon baker! He’s just getting his feet wet!

    1. Kerosenerag

Matt is right! His argument lacks any credibility. I can see UNC and UK being ranked close together, but he’s got them several spots ahead. That is absurd…you go Matt.

  6. ukkatzfan

Matt saying sportscasters are really no smarter about sports than me and then giving this goober credibility by arguing with him. Hahahahahahaha.

  7. zoupman

I couldn’t care less what we are ranked in Dec.

“he typically is the type of writer that tries to rile up big fanbases to get clicks”

LOL, isn’t that *exactly* what this post is?

You guys all fake arguments and call each other out just to get attention – you’re just creating BS arguments out of thin air.

To anyone (a) who has advanced beyond their teen years; or (b) has an ounce of freaking common sense: it’s freaking December; it doesn’t matter; and you’re being played by a bunch of alarmists with nothing better to do than stir an empty pot.

    At this point… BIG DEAL!

We could lose to UofL next week and regret all ranking systems, or win every game and then not need a ranking system…

Let’s get another National Championship Banner!

    Go Big Blue

  9. ThatsAShame

Nerd fight on Twitter. Arguing about rankings is the silliest waste of time. So many other worthwhile aspects of the game to discuss or evaluate.
    Next game. Let’s go!

  10. CahillsCrossingNT

People put too much emphasis on rankings. If North Carolina deserves to be ranked ahead of Kentucky, then they’ll prove it in the end.

  11. michaelb

    This guys mother ain’t shit

  12. Jiminy Crickets

Jon trying to get clicks, and it worked, by Matt responding and getting this site fired up, which in turn gives Matt clicks. Win win. Both guys get richer and everyone on here can agree to disagree

  13. Harrelson55

We gotta stop bitching as a fanbase. This team hasnt been consistent and the rankings are useless. It’s not that serious. Just beat Louisville.

  14. Cole28

Appears even the pollsters are down on us, and agree with Rothstein… ah well. Makes not sense.

  15. CopenhagenCat

Never heard of this guy. So who cares. Hes a hater.
