CBS Sports’ Jerry Palm moves Kentucky back to #1 seed

We are officially one week away from start of the greatest event in all sports: Selection Sunday. A lot of readers of this site are very critical of how often some “bracketologists” update their brackets, especially when it is in November and December. While I am not disagreeing with that sentiment, it is hard to deny that it is now important to look at.

Following last week’s loss at Tennessee, CBS Sports’ Jerry Palm dropped Kentucky to a #2 seed. After yesterday, where Tennessee and Duke both lost, Palm has put the Cats back on the #1 seed line.

Two things to note on this bracket. First, the obvious being that Duke is the number 2 seed in the bracket. Second, is the locations with opening games in Columbus before moving to Louisville. As Drew Franklin has said multiple times, bring on Duke if it is in Louisville.

The matchup against Omaha in the first round would be the first ever matchup between the two schools. A second round matchup against Iowa State or Syracuse would be interesting though. The Cats haven’t played Boeheim and company since 2000. The last time they played Iowa State though? 2012. That ended well that year.

A possible Sweet 16 rematch against Kansas State is another game that would excite me. I am sure PJ Washington would love to play that team again.

What are your thoughts on this bracket if it is the one the Cats get next week?

I would love Duke in Louisville

    1. BigolBlue

      Nope

    2. runningunnin.454

They’re not going to put Dook in Louisville with UK.

    3. friendsofcoal

May not but I pray they do. Honestly, the only way we can beat them with Zion playing is if the game is in the Yum!

    4. 1IH

Zion’s parents aren’t letting him play anymore this season.

    5. Thetruthshallsetbennyfree

Their shot blocking/experience took a hit when Boldin went down. Bolden is world ending but he’s better then option b.

    6. Thetruthshallsetbennyfree

      Not world ending

I said last week that I’d be most concerned with a possible Syracuse matchup than any other game in that bracket. We showed AGAIN yesterday that this team is totally confused playing against the zone defense. That’s the only defense Syracuse plays and historically they’ve played it well. If we pass the ball around the perimeter and panic with 5 seconds on the shot clock, like we have a tendency to do, this could be a very difficult game. Otherwise, I fear no one in that bracket.

    1. catsarerunnin

If they can be confused by a zone but still win by 9 I’m good.

    2. DelrayCat

But on the flipside…can Syracuse score against us???
They are a terrible offensive team. I put more faith ini UK figuring out the zone than in them having much success against us.

    3. catsarerunnin

I agree. I tried to watch Syracuse yesterday but it was like enduring a root canal.

    4. runningunnin.454

I doubt Syracuse would get by Iowa State.

    5. AFVetODS

That’s what I was thinking…many assumptions that we would play Syracuse

    6. 1IH

Iowa State beats Cuse and even if not we have the shooters this year to beat their zone.

    7. Thetruthshallsetbennyfree

What scares me about Syracuse is if Bohole drives the bus.

  3. timtim1960

Unfortunately palm or Lunardi don’t get a say in seeding I don’t know anybody would listen to what they would say or have either of them on tv like their opinions are written in stone. It’s all opinions that not what the tournament go on it’s the committee opinion that counts

    1. CPACAT

      My sentiments exactly.

    2. AFVetODS

      ?

    3. ibescootch

And? So your point is that no one should say a thing at all or give any opinions at all, but just sit here on our hands waiting for the Selection Sunday?! Have you been around sports in the last 100 years? People give opinions of what’s going to happen. Like, that’s entire industries relating to sports. And it isn’t like guys on the selection committee are going to go on TV and give us their opinions on anything related to seeding. You’re just complaining to complain.

  4. timtim1960

    Right on jaws

  5. makeitstop

Bracketology is like the hurricane spaghetti models that come out a week ahead of time: the safest place to be is where they first predict it will hit. That said, I hate the ‘Cuse 2:3 zone and they beat Duke at Cameron with it, so that’s doing us no favors, but I’ll take basically home games in L’ville all day any day. Best we could do.

  6. KYjellyRoll

How accurate is jerry palm traditionally in the week leading up to selection Sunday? Any stats and info on this?

    1. bigbluebanana

I’m assuming not very, like all the other Bracketology experts.

    2. makeitstop

He is ranked 82d best bracketologist over a 5 year period (so the NIT of bracketology). Lunardi is 68th – so last 4 in lol. Bracketmatrix.com has the stats for all the bracketokogists. Kind of a fun read, along w the Times article: “to NCAA bracketologists, it’s who’s in not who wins “ from March last year.

    3. Big Sexy

I know as of a year or two ago Lunardi had a 95%+ success rate of predicting the teams getting in. The committee is such a wildcard it’s almost impossible to predict what they are going to do.

    4. bigbluebanana

I think most people commenting on this site, even the turdburger brothers, could get a 95% rate on the teams that get in. These guys make 6 figures talking Bracketology, and they guess just like we do as to who goes where and what their seed will be. 1’s and 2’s, anybody can pick those.

    5. ukcamel

Predicting 95% of the teams getting in isn’t that hard, because the majority of teams are either automatic bids or clearly getting in.

    6. Big Sexy

No you couldn’t. You might get lucky a year or two but not year after year.

  7. Game Changer

what a bunch of bull… this is a terrible bracket… DUKE, MICHIGAN, IOWA STATE, KANSAS STATE…. ARE YOU KIDDING ME

    1. AFVetODS

      Copy that!

  8. cincinnaticat

I have no opinion on this “bracket” as this is not what our bracket will look like. I will just say that I am always excited about the prospect of playing the dookies late in the NCAA tourney….always a hella game

  9. anrbob

Lunandri put UK 1 and Michigan St 2 in the South last I saw

  10. makeitstop

Btw the top ranked bracketologist over 5 years is delphibracketology.com and they also have Syracuse as our eight seed with Kentucky as a one opening in Columbus. They have North Carolina as the 2 so that may have been before yesterday‘s game and Wisconsin as the 4 with Houston as the 3.

    1. KayutsBy90

You know that bracket is from 2/21 right?

    2. makeitstop

I know it’s not up to this weekend but couldn’t find what date it was thru… some of the smaller guys w better records don’t update as often but I’d put more stock in them than Jerry Palm or Lunardi

  11. 4everUKblue

There’s no way they give us a 1 seed and dUKe a 2 seed unless it benefits dUKe somehow.

  12. TB112162

No thought.I will wait till next Sunday when it’s official

    1. 4everUKblue

That makes too much sense TB, but I think I’ll do the same.

  13. maximumscott

I dont like Syracuse. There length would give us problems.

  14. runningunnin.454

They drop us from the 1 line for no reason; and, put us back at the 1 for no reason.
Three of the biggest words in the English language,
    IF, IS, BE.

  15. 2thepoint

I worry about long teams as well and Syracuse is that. The good thing is that they aren’t big along with tall

  16. chris43

I think it’s pure BS as always. Don’t get it twisted…with Zion Duke is a ONE SEED and easily one of the top four teams in the country. It doesn’t really matter what seed number you place next to their name. Heck why not throw in Wisconsin, Louisville, and a few more they always seem to pair us up with. The only advantage I see is playing close to home and if Duke is in a bracket it’s typically a cake walk.

    1. runningunnin.454

Yup, Louisville, Wisconsin, and Murray State will be in our bracket. Bet on that.

    2. AFVetODS

Just a personal wish…I would love to see us meet up with Wisconsin and have Tyler make them cry, that’s just me and I know they aren’t even in the bracket that is posted here.

  17. Fitz

It looks like the Cats cannot Play we’ll against zone defenses but the problem is not regonizing them when an opponent switches from man and taking too many processions to adapt. Against Cuse there won’t be a reginition/adjustment issue.

    1. runningunnin.454

That’s true. And, all you have to do to beat the Syracuse zone, is pop PJ, Tyler, or Keldon in the paint in the middle of the zone…no dribble, just catch and shoot.
If you can find the ’78 Championship game on line, just watch Jack Givens destroy Duke’s zone.

    2. runningunnin.454

By the way, if you watched the UK game yesterday, the analyst for the game was Jim Sparnarkel; he played for Dook in that ’78 title game.

    3. CahillsCrossingNT

      Spanarkel is the correct spelling.

    4. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door
    5. chris gettelfinger is not walking through that door

I still can’t believe Dook never changed up their defense.

  18. ScottGreene22

Duke won’t be the 2 in our bracket. They would never want Puke at Louisville against UK.

  19. weneedpitino

I think that all of these people that waste their time and ours making brackets are the same people that do political polls, you know the same ones that said Hillary would win in a landslide. Also the same ones that currently have Trumps approval in the dumps right now when it in fact is not true. And trust me if anyone knows that it is me. Go Cats, and boo to bracketologist’s and political pollsters.

    1. bigbluebanana

You want to draw our ire about UK ball, go right ahead. Leave the political BS in the laundry with your Q Anon shirt. Stick to sports, unless you don’t think you’re smart or good enough to just be the best dlck you can be while sticking to the reason we are all here.

    2. 4everUKblue

Banana you’re trying to talk to Slater like he’s an adult when we already know WeneedbigolSlaterMedic is a mentally challenged 12 yr old.

  20. BluejayK

I don’t know what’s worse, reading weneed dummy or 4ever taking his bait EVERYTIME he post, and replying..Both of y’all are watering down, and screwing up what used to be a pretty good comment section. Grow up fellas…

  21. CahillsCrossingNT

It won’t be the bracket the Cats get next week. While these brackets are interesting to look at, I still don’t understand why there is so much attention on brackets that will never exist.
