John Calipari is at the SEC Spring Meetings in Destin and spoke to Darrell Bird yesterday about his new squad, specifically his incoming freshmen. Spoiler: he’s very excited.
Even though he couldn’t mention Ashton Hagans, who is still in the process of reclassifying to the 2018 class, Calipari seemed thrilled to have a full stable of guards, even hinting at playing four at once (!) ala Villanova. One of the players that can make that happen is Keldon Johnson, a versatile wing that Calipari compared to an all-time favorite.
“Keldon has a chance to be special. He could play 1, 2 or 3,” Calipari said. “He’s got size. He’s got some length. Unbelievable toughness. Not backing down. Like, I don’t care what happens, he ain’t backing down. But it’s an energy, a spirit about him that he brings like a Michael Kidd-Gilchrist.”
Basically, get ready to see a lot of guard combinations in the Bahamas. For more quotes from Calipari on Immanuel Quickley, Tyler Herro, and EJ Montgomery, head on over to CatsPause.com.
