Calipari calls into Mike Francesa’s show to critique Francesa’s critique of him

LOL

John Calipari went on the Mike Francesa show yesterday, and after his appearance, Francesa said he doesn’t believe that Cal is a great X’s and O’s coach and that his strength lies in recruiting and getting talent to play together. Calipari didn’t like that one bit, and called into the show as “John from Kentucky” to argue with him. “Are you saying I can’t coach? Why didn’t you say that while I was sitting next to you?” Cal laughed. “You said ‘he’s not great at X’s and O’s.’ That’s basically saying I can’t coach. You know what they call me? A magician. ‘Cal the magician.'”

The clip is hilarious and you should stop what you’re doing and listen:

  1. STOOPS TROOPS

I hear this from trolls every time we talk about Cal. Not a very original criticism…just recycled over and over

  2. Tennessee Wildcat

Swagger Cal is good entertainment. Glad he is bringing it! Thats how Cal should be this year, like a Vince McMahon.

    1. nkywildcat

Agreed. He is always going to be viewed as a villain by the majority of college basketball. May as well embrace and go full on heel.

  3. Francesa Fransuckit

HAHAHA, cannot believe he dropped Cal. Wow.

  4. Nashville Skippy

Always weak when a talk-radio hits the kill switch because he’s afraid of what the caller might say.

Plus, he looks like a dirttball.

  5. Biglaw Dawgin'

Lot of interesting things in that clip. Coach Cal with the fake voice at first, then Cal quoting his own nickname, then Francesa just dropping Cal like he was a regular caller. Wows all around.

You can’t trust anyone’s basketball IQ who says that Cal is only a recruiter and motivator. That’s such a regurgitated media falsity. That’s what you say if you don’t know anything about basketball and just want something to talk about. If Francesa knew anything about basketball (and watched an actual Cats game), he’d see the switching of the defenses at key times, the complexity of the offense, and the perfectly timed set-plays. As well as the knowledge to know when to let the guys play through bad stretches and when to get involved. To say Cal doesn’t know X’s and O’s is just uninformed.

    1. Yeah but...

Switching defenses at key times… Like in the NC game when they were killing them playing zone but he inexplicably played man most the 2nd half.

The complexity of the offense… Like his “tweak” that literally was telling his point guard to PASS the ball rather than look for his own shot.

Knowledge to know when to let guys play through bad stretches and when to get involved… Like when he “expected” guys to just sub themselves in and out as needed.

The guy has a point. Cal is not a top tier Xs and Os guy. He is very good but still far from great. He has racked up all his wins based on the fact that he is an excellent motivator and plays with the best players in college basketball every year.

  6. Steve

Jimmies and Joes > X’s and O’s. Hard to believe so-called experts don’t understand this about the modern day game of basketball.

  7. Steve

Mike Francesa is a f***ing TOOL. What a bi*** to sit there and say that after Cal leaves his show instead of when he is sitting right next to him. COWARD. MIKE FRANCESA, YOU. ARE. A. COWARD!!!!!!

  8. Just curious

Did he ask why Coach and Madam Calipari didn’t attend their daughter’s wedding?

    1. L1C6

How about you watch it and find out yourself, since you seem to think it’s your business. Idk what it has to do with anything we should care about though.

    2. Twitter

I’m sure he and his daughter spoke about it, and they are the only people that should be concerned about this. From his Twitter: Erin & Cody got married. She is now Dr. Erin Siciliano Calipari. Megan was there, Ellen and I can’t wait until the reception to celebrate.

    3. CommonSense

It’s truly none of your business. Leave people alone.

    4. CommonSense

It isn’t our business but anyone w common sense would say: The Bahamas trip has been planned for a long time, the wedding was fairly spontaneous. Pretty sure Erin knew her dad was already gonna be in the Bahamas and didn’t expect him to cancel his trip there to fly to Europe for a wedding that could have been performed a couple of weeks later if she wanted him there.

    5. CommonSense

lol sorry, 1st CommonSense, I really didn’t notice that was your name when I commented.

    6. Smart ladies

Erin is just smart. Why spend the energy and drama trying to make everyone happy with a big wedding. Have you been in one? It’s stressful and some folks just aren’t into it. I eloped and I have zero regrets. Good for her. It was her choice.

  9. theWilkman

I’ll take Jay Bilas’ word over this dirtbag’s. On his KSR appearance he said Cal’s just as good as Coach K. But what would he know?

    1. Trey

He said that because he was on KSR. Lol

It isn’t wrong to call a spade a spade. He didn’t say Cal couldn’t coach or draw up Xs and Os. He said he isn’t great at it. I agree. As someone pointed out above, it’s about the Jimmys and Joes not the Xs and Os. Cal knows this. One of the worst things you can do with great talent is put limits on them with “Xs and Os”. That is like a tied up wild horse. You will never see it’s potential. You let it out, let run, let it roam, within a certain distance of course, but you let them be them. THAT is why Cal is a great coach. Not because he can draw up a better play than the opposing coach in 30 seconds.

  10. Coomer

Completely ignorant uninformed criticism. And listening to Bob Knights X and O equivalent to a local senile man at McDonalds- unbearable. Watching Cal conduct practice and manage late game situations is as good as it gets in the country. Just as Jay Bilas if Cal is good X and O.

  11. Great

Common trick for hosts of all types of shows. Softball with a guest while they are on, then run them down after the segment when they can’t defend themselves. See it happen all the time. Glad Cal called him on it.
As far as Cal as a bball tactician, whichever tactic wins is the best tactic. People think the coach’s fingerprints should be on every possession for a coach to be a “tactician.” Allowing players more room for creativity on the court is not a lack of tactics, it is a tactic unto itself. People like this host are stuck inside “the box” because they think running rigid sets is the only expression of strategy. The Redcoats felt the same way about battle –until they starting getting whooped by guerilla tactics. General Cal Washington gonna show ‘em all.

  12. Ben

Francesca is a clown he probably thinks Nick Saban is just a good recruiter and not a great COACH too

    1. Trent

I like Cal and I can’t stand the people who say he’s not a quality coach and just good at recruiting, but Saban is on a different level than every coach with his coaching ability, not just in college football, but in all of college athletics.

    2. WildcatDan

Agreed. Saban is on a different level than everyone else.

    3. deetle77

I would say that in this year’s bowl game that bob stoops made Saban look pretty bad.

    4. Deetle's Mom

I would say that not even making the tournament in 2012-2013 and losing over 10 games with “the greatest recruiting class in the history of college basketball” made Call look REALLY, REALLY bad as a coach.

  13. King Kelly Coleman

Who the hell is Mike Francesa and why is he talking?

    1. Indeed

      THIS ^^^^

  14. GoCats

Cowardice for Mike to not say that Cal’s face. Then kind of petty for Cal to call back in.

“A lion doesn’t concern himself with the opinions of sheep.”

    1. snawdog

      exactly

  15. Truth

Well, he did take 4 Memphis teams to the NIT. Didn’t start winning until the good teams left for the Big East and Wes started helping him (starting with Milt Wagner’s boy). He loses in the first weekend if he is coaching Uofl’s 2013 title team. Probably misses the dance on Uofl’s 05 team, which made a final 4 with a bunch of scrubs and Garcia.

    1. L1C6

Experience usually makes people better at things, so even if he wasn’t a great coach at Memphis doesn’t mean he isn’t one now.

    2. More Truth

Don’t forget Pitino has taken UL to 2 NITs, 2 first round exits, and 3 second round exits. You left that part out.

    3. Even More Truth

Also, it was 3 Memphis teams. He also took over a team called Memphis that was average at best and had to turn things around. They were in a weaker conference too.

Explain the 1992 UMass team he took to the Sweet 16. A 30 win team with marginal talent. Also don’t forget the Elite 8 and Final 4 with UMass. Did I mention it was UMass? That’s the University of Massachusetts. He took them to the Final 4.

This guy has owned Pitino since coming to Kentucky.

    4. Voice of Reason

Cal gets talent. He “recruits” better than anyone. He has more burger boys on this uk team than Rick has had during his time at uofl. Would like to see what Cal’s record would be if he he had 1 or 2 burger boys on each of his teams. Won’t ever happen though, he just prints out the rivals top 20 list and hands it to his pimps and runner buddies.

    5. Real Voice of Reason

This explains his success at the University of Massachusetts. Thanks pal.

    6. TimeFor9

the Card Tards will find any excuse to make them feel better about Cal owning them. Too bad, b*tches, Cal 6, Rick 1 and no “but… but…. but….cry….cry…cry” will make that go away.

    7. The Loco Pollo

I fail to see how you’re the voice of reason. The only thing Francesca is correct about is there are different aspects that make up the overall job of coaching. Recruiting is one of them. Pitino being bad at recruiting (or developing top recruits ie Samuels, Caracter, Behanan, etc) shouldn’t be used to defend his coaching skills nor insult Cal’s. It’s part of coaching. A few times he’s overcome his poor recruiting to have success

Cal gets great players who are unselfish and have high character. Despite what some will have you believe, he doesn’t just take the best players as determined by some outside list. He’s selective and has passed on guys who wouldn’t fit those characteristics but were great players (Selby, Ledo, Q. Miller, C. Walker, Behanan to name a few).

He’s also implemented completely different systems/schemes each year to fit the players he has and had to teach (coach) them and essentially start over each year. To deny that to have the success he’s had at UK with such high turnover takes a lot of excellent coaching to go along with the recruiting/motivating is to just be blinded by your bias.

Are there better Xs & Os coaches out there? Sure. Are they better coaches overall? Not a chance. Is Cal a “bad” Xs & Os coach? Hell no.

I’ll remind you all that BCG was supposed to be some great Xs & Os guy.

    8. Jordan

      Voice of reason:
Is 3 MAA’s too much? That 2011 squad had Knight, Lamb and TJones. I believe they went to the Final 4. But since you only said 1 or 2 I guess I mentioned too many players, so that does mean Cal can’t coach

  16. Ed

What do all great coaches get measured on? Winning!!!! Not X’s and O’s, and even the biggest Cal haters in the world cant deny him his ability to win basketball games. Saying Cal cant coach is the equivalent of saying “you don’t have to be a great X’s and O’s guy to win in college basketball” if you step back and think about it. The bottom line is, great X’s and O’s coach or not, Cal is the man, and he wins. Win and nothing else matters in my book. This is the only tidbit these trolls can hate on Cal for. Cal said it in the Bahamas “Don’t let outsider criticism influence us this year.” Its already started. In one ear out the other, BBN.

  17. Matthew Barry

Just ask Pitino if Cal can “do X’s and O’s.” If I recall, Pitino looked like he didn’t even know they were part of the alphabet, nor did his players, when Willie switched out to guard the perimeter in the tourney this past spring. I smile and laugh every time I think about it. Fran has always been just another radio host who loves the sound of his own voice, and nothing more since he is hardly knowledgable about anything. He said something that wasn’t just opinion, but utterly foolish, and to hear him backtrack sounds like a politician caught in a spin cycle. He has no credibility. One thing you ALWAYS hear about Cal from recruits is that he is honest, (Yes, I know he says crazy things sometimes) because he tells it like it is and makes no promises. Funny how the most dishonest people have issues with him, huh?

  18. mike in NY

I think ole Mike is fun, but I am a little bias. I much rather spend my time banging on that bum Rex Ryan

  19. KC Cat

Ask Mike how Cal got UMass to the Final Four with all that loaded “talent”.

    1. Ryan Lemond

      I think you mean UMa$$

    2. Ballsack

No one had loaded teams during those years. Also, he bought hookers for Camby.

    3. Larry

What about the 92 team Ballsack?

    4. Clint Hurtt

You mean like I bought hookers for Teddy?

    5. WellObviously

Just bc no one supposedly had loaded talent those days doesn’t take away from the fact that Cal did exactly what the haters say he can’t….took an okay, not great, team to the FF.

    6. shaved sack

You mean like Pitino didn’t have that kind of loaded talent in ’96? Duke. UNLV.

  20. Bledsoe's Biceps

No balls move by Francesca to make the statement after Cal had left. But I do have to agree that being deficient in X’s & O’s does not mean you are a bad coach. There is more to the job than X’s & O’s. Cal excels at most of the other aspects, but frankly, I agree he is not one of the best at X’s & O’s. But it’s not the way he approaches the game, especially on offense. He relies on superior talent and the dribble drive, rather than traditional set plays.

  21. theWilkman

What about Adolph Rupp? I’m way too young to have seen it in person, but I’ve read that he pretty much just sat their during the games and let his assistants make the calls. His job was to prepare them for the game and let the players decide their own fate. Seemed to work out well for him, I’d say. Mike probably thinks he isn’t a good “X’s and O’s coach” though.

    1. Nerd

The real question is why did Rupp pull his pants up so high?

  22. Bow to the Brow

I will say there is no reason the 2012 title team should have been life and death with uofl in the final 4. We had way more talent than them.

    1. Reality

UK beat Louisville by 8 after taking their foot off the gas in the last 2 minutes. It was a 15 point game before that, not exactly life and death. The Cats came out and wrecked the Dirty Birds in the second half.

    2. Nope

The final 4 game with uofl was tied up with 4 minutes to go in the game.

    3. cracka

an 8 point win is not life and death. KY only made 2 pointers that game, and the only reason Louisville was in the game was bc of their offensive rebounding. Rivalry games are typically close games in basketball no matter who is on the court.

    4. cracka

      * Two 3-pointers, not 2 pointers

  23. bmt22033

Who is Mike Francesa and why should I care what he has to say?

  24. Coach Barnes

Francesca is senile. He’s got John from Kentucky mixed up with me, Rick from Texas. Has anyone accomplished less with more talent than I have? It’s time I got recognized for it!

  25. shields eyes

Dang…he had Cal on the phone and he dropped him. Didn’t even say “Appreciate the call” like Matt.

  26. UKALLDay

Alright I’m ready to get killed for this and I love coach Cal, he is the perfect coach for UK. But Francesa is right. I mean Cal has ALWAYS had a loaded team EVEN at Umass with Camby and those guys. His team now is not even fair, their so loaded. He is going to get the best players. See Cal’s coaching philosophy is this and always has been. My guys are better than your guys. Were not going to trick you or scheme you. Man to Man I have a better team. I speak for a lot of people when I say this but Cal had us scratching our heads multiple times last year over the course of the 11 loss season. He is not on the same level SCHEME wise as a Tony Bennett (Virginia) or Coach Izzo. I’m just saying but I love Cal and his All-Star teams especially now at UK.

    1. theWilkman

Unless you and “a lot of people” have more basketball expertise than guys like Jay Bilas, Seth Greenburg, Dick Vitale, etc., your opinion of Cal’s coaching abilities means nothing.

    2. donny

Umass team was loaded? Name another great player on that team? That team didn’t have NBA players. Lou Roe played on Umass a year prior to the Camby final four team and he was a second round pick that was shortly out of the league.

    3. UKALLDay

College basketball was different back then, this was before 1 and done talents took the world by storm remember this is 1996 here, who won it that year? Kentucky …. How many NBA stars did that team have? Not many…. A.Walker then everyone else had a cup of coffee in the league and they were gone! UK certainly didn’t have a Camby on their team. With that being said, Edgar Padilla and Carmelo Traviaso were DYNAMITE players, ask Coach Cal! He told the Harrison’s boys that they reminded him of them when he recruited them out of high school. See you are talking to a college ball guy. I WATCHED THE GAMES and Umass had better player than most teams in 1996.

  27. Inbred and proud

We are gunna go without a loss this yeara. I can’t not wait! Where the 35-0 shirts peeple?! Champs baby!

    1. MethHeadCardTard

kinda like Louisville football went undefeated last year, huh? I guess those shirts are in Africa along w the Teddy wins the Heisman shirts. And the Teddy is the first round draft pick shirts.

  28. JustBringIt

Francesa cites Rick Majerus as a good X’s and O’s coach.

Rick Majerus has been dead for 2 years.

That tells you all you need to know about his expertise of college basketball.

    1. Hold Up

In fairness, he called him “The Late Rick Majerus”

  29. shorty blue

Wichita St., UofL , Michigan, and Wisconsin just called to say they think Calipari is actually pretty good X’s & O’s coach

  30. Did he just say that?

So did anyone else notice fransesca just said that cal ” Puts his BOUGHT guys out there and makes them play hard and that’s what he does”???

  31. Nathan

Really dude?….Yeah, inbred and proud Louisville fan!!

  32. Alex C

I love how he tells him to come on the show seconds before disconnecting his call.

    1. Hold Up

Uh no… Cal was on the show. Cal left the show. Mike said stuff. Cal called back in.

  33. bigbluekats

This guy is a jok ! What doeshe think Coach is doing! You can’t win by just putting talented guys on the floor! This guy is a moron!!!

  34. Mark Mallison

Although I agree that X’s and O’s are only part of coaching, I still disagree with Cal not being a great X/O guy. He may not be a CLASSIC X and O guy, but that is because Cal is a Masterfull Innovative Coach in all aspects of coaching. He is open minded and thinks and brainstorms about everything in life. He is always looking better ways, to adapt plays , to an;d for players and his teams. This makes him ELITE in my opinion. Maybe he i:s not known for one particular X and O Art , because he tweaks everything to make better and is given little credit. One reason :Bob Knight in my opinion, doesn’t care for call is because Cal watched and studied his Motion offense and tweaked it! Keep pushing Cal to WHOOP all in 2014/15. Its about time for #9!

  35. Humper

Frances is not a sports announcer, not a blogger, not an educated sportscaster, he’s just another JERRY SPRINGER. The Jerry Springer of basketball. Cause a big stir, create riff, say something stupid and do an idiotic thing , all to get attention and ratings. What a douche!

  36. UKBlue1!

Calipari is one of the top 5 coaches in basketball. He has proven this by being able to adjust to his teams. No team at UK has been exactly the same as the team the year before. Josh Harrelson and DeAndre Liggins are both good examples of him being able to get the most from a player. I remember him coaching at UMass. He beat the 1996 team in regular season and came very close to beating it again in the tournament. Pitino is 1-6 vs Cal while he has been at UK. NCAA tournament record at UK 18-3. Three Final fours and one NCAA title. For all of those that say it’s the recruiting…..it is one of the most important parts of being a college coach.

  37. gordonm

    Francesa talks around the subject.

  38. Jim 1

Some UK fan are calling Cal a quality coach. No, Cal’s a great coach and all anyone has to do is look at his record over the years. Cal’s record speaks for itself and guys like Francesa has other motives when they won’t address their opinions to Cal face to face.

Saban has been called by some the greatest of the great. But Saban sits in heart of the hot bed of college football at Alabama. He rules the recruiting of the deep south and the Bears’ offspring in Alabama flock to him. Cal has always had to recruit outside of his home state and that alone makes his record even more remarkable. Fans should understand there is a vast difference in recruiting between the two sports.

Both Saban and Cal are at the top of their professions and it would be a fools guess to try and pick the greatest in any sport. I’m glad we have Cal.

    1. Dennis

Lol. Saban goes all over the country, too. Alabama isn’t the greatest state for football recruiting. He has to go into Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Tennessee and Texas. Cal isn’t a better coach than Saban, bud. Sorry.

    2. Hank

On what planet are Cal’s accomplishments more remarkable than Saban’s? Not a one. Even the people at KSR have said Saban is the best coach in all of college sports, including Matt Jones.

  39. Chris

Who is Mike Fresca? Never even heard of the guy

  40. Kenny

Football recruiting is a lot more competitive than basketball recruiting

    1. Kenny

Sorry, should have gone in response to #38

  41. ThatCrackerBZ

if it were as simple as recruiting top talent, last year’s team would’ve went undefeated. Coaching is why we were in the championship game.

And what happened to Coach K, who had a pretty darn good recruiting class last year + returning talent?

What about UNC? Kansas (who some argued had the better recruiting class last year)?

Pitino has two titles. One with the most talented team in history (96 cats) and the 2013 Cardinals which boasted a minimum of 3 McdAA’s and Gorgui Dieng, not to mention Harrell coming off the bench.

    So, who can’t coach?

    1. MOST TALENTED?

The 96′ cats weren’t THAT talented, Antoine Walker was the only one to have a REAL NBA career. A. Delk, W.MCarty, Ron Mercer and a bunch of others I can’t remember ALL FLAMED OUT EARLY.

    2. Scott88

Delk did last for 10 years in the Association. Not an All-Star but a respectable career.

  42. Brian

The most telling thing about Francesa is that he hung up on Cal. Apparently he’s only a great radio host when no one disagrees with him. Make him face his own bullsh*t and he bails. that’s basically what he did, he ran away from the fight. Coward

  43. frank alex sabados

    what a coward Mike is

  44. Uncle Rico

Can’t believe that piece of sh!t cut Cal off. He knew he was out of his league and took the easy way out. I’d take Cal over any coach is basketball pro or college. UK will have more championships than UCLA before Cal retires and that you can take to the bank. We have the BEST coach period Francesa or whatever your name is. In CAL we trust. Go CATS

    1. The hagster

      OH really??????????

  45. frank alex sabados

Mike when the caller gets the better of you in an argument you chicken ass weasel you hang up on the caller real immature how old are you over 55 or 60 you are pathetic Mike, Pathetic , you act like child that had his toy take away from grow up wimp

  46. The hagster

Mike told the truth and cal got his feeling hurt. LOL

  47. jw

I don’t why Cal gave Francesca any attention. Let people say what they want and use it for motivation.

  48. jw

    know^

  49. Dutch

Mike is a real jack-off! I do not think he would know his ass from a hole in the ground! How many games has this ass hole won in his lifetime?

  50. Unbelievable

Mike Francesa can go suck one! He’s too idiotic to be heard by the public, and classless to boot!

  51. Mike Gillespie

Folks are losing their heads in far-off lands for less than this! Perhaps Franscesca will find himself beneath the OTHER endzone in Giants Stadium….

  52. Blueworld_3.0

I don’t know who Mike Francesa is and I frankly don’t care. After Cal called in the dude got very defensive and started talking in circles to cover his a$$. Cal was literally laughing at him and the guy drops him like the northeastern elitist prick he appears to be.
I gotta agree with another poster, Jay Bilas…who freakin played the game under Coach K would seem to be a far better judge than some no-name, east coast, radio talk show host.

  53. Mikey H

MF is a no nothing douche bag.

  54. snawdog

    Lost ball respect for Francesca..Douche

  55. snawdog

Prolly the best recruiter/coach in the last decade…and Mike wants to show his low BB IQ…

  56. MikeFromLex

look @ KSR’s facebook my friend did a good jon on Cal ” The magician ” and he’s a uc fan

  57. Denny

    What’s Fran’s record?

  58. UConndoit

All that I know is that UConn( Calhoun and Ollie) have owned Calipari since he was at UMAss. No ifs, ands, or buts about it!!1 U C O N N UConn UConn UConn
