Today, John Calipari is making the rounds in Bristol at the ESPN headquarters, and is kicking off the “carwash” with an appearance on “Mike and Mike.” Cal co-hosted an hour of the show, and used the opportunity to reveal tweaks #2 and #3.
Cal said tweak #2 was getting Julius Randle to do less offensively, which he did by showing him tapes of Zach Randolph and telling him to only score off passes from Andrew.
“We gotta narrow what you’re doing. Less is more, less is more. Let’s look at the tape of Zach Randolph, 6’9″, 6’11” wingspan, exactly like you and a lefty. We went through it, ‘tell me what you’re seeing.’ ‘He gets to his left hand.’ Yeah, because he doesn’t mess with the ball,” Cal said. “Julius, that’s you, but if you mess with the ball, they’re going to jump on that left hand and you’ve gotta go right. And then I said, ‘the only time I want you to score is off a pass from Andrew. You’re not gonna be out here trying to create all sorts of craziness because it’s creating turnovers for you and our team. Well, he ended up going double-double, double-double through the NCAA Tournament, and he passed more, which again led James and Aaron to open up their games.”
Tweak #3? Changing the offense against the zone before the Louisville game. “Here’s our offense versus zone, it is gonna be simpler, this is all we’re doing. Again, all I was trying to do is take the weight off their shoulders, make the game simpler, and make it so that ‘you just made the game easier for me, Coach, thank you.'”
