2018 5-star forward EJ Montgomery schedules unofficial visit to Kentucky

According to 247 Sports’ Evan Daniels,  five-star recruit E.J. Montgomery has scheduled an unofficial visit to Kentucky for February 24th.

Montgomery is considered the No. 12 player in the class of 2018, and the second-best remaining uncommitted recruit.

The 6-foot-10 power forward out of Marietta, Georgia also has visits scheduled to North Carolina on Monday, and then Duke on Wednesday.

Montgomery has trimmed his final list to UK, UNC, Duke, South Carolina, Wake Forest, Vanderbilt, Georgetown, USC, Georgia, Clemson and UCLA, but most feel his recruitment will come down to the blue blood programs.

Duke has gotten the most buzz since he decommitted from Auburn, with the draw of joining the nation’s No. 1 recruiting class and earning immediate playing time in the frontcourt being major factors.

That being said, John Calipari and Kenny Payne visited Montgomery last week, and Payne visited the talented forward the week before, swinging some of that momentum back Kentucky’s direction.

With the Kentucky coaching staff getting Montgomery on campus, all bets are off.

Bring him on home, Cal.

Same here my man wish people would quit being negative

Not all UK fans are negative. But the negative UK fans are the ones who just love to post on the internet.

Immediate playing time at Duke? Why would he not get that at UK? If he’s watching our games this year, I don’t think he’s worrying about losing PT to any of our frontcourt players that return next year.

Or maybe he seeing the lack of development in these players, individually and team based. Maybe he wants a title chance, cause already can tell next season is a bust for UK as well. I could tell this year was in early Nov., said so and got bashed, and can see nothing to tell me next years team has a title chance. Oh well can look forward to 2019-2020. I guess the Gold Standard, the “we are college basketball” talk is gone. We are no different than EKU right now, same chance at a title this year and next, but we do have June.

Best guess, in the final analysis, this is another Duke-UK recruiting contest. Duke bigs returning next year will be Antonio Vrankovic, Javin DeLaurier, Marques Bolden, Justin Robinson, and Jack White. Duke already has a commitment from Zion Williamson.

Best guess, Kentucky bigs returning next year will be Sasha Killeya-Jones, Wenyen Gabriel, Jarred Vanderbilt, PJ Washington, probably Nick Richards, and possibly Tai Wynyard. There are no bigs in UK’s current recruiting class. Vanderbilt and Washington are not strictly baseline players.

If early playing time is a pivotal issue for Montgomery, he should be able to get some of that in either program. But it sure looks like there would be more playing opportunities available for Montgomery at UK. Zion Williamson and RJ Barrett will get pampered at Duke. But at UK, Montgomery could split the 4 position with Gabriel and also see a little additional time as a 5. Kenny Payne is the best at developing a young big. To me, the fit looks better at UK. If Montgomery is smart, he could be a Wildcat.

I think he’d do better here, but to say Payne is the best at developing young bigs right after listing our bigs who will return and not claim all the playing time…bit problematic.

    2. binarysolo

Hmm you think Tai will be welcomed back to the team?

    3. dismore

Gabriel and Vanderbilt are gone. And based on Richards play he will start at UK.

Who cares if he comes here it’s the same thing every year! Sign a lottery pick get eliminated in the tourney. Sign 3 lottery picks get eliminated in the tourney. Sign 3 lottery picks get eliminated in the tourney. It’s like deja vu

When was our last natl title b4 Cal came? What about FF? So I think I’d be happy w 4 FFs and 1 title in 10 yrs and stfu. I promise all these UK fans that are bitching, just wait til Cal leaves and then you’ll be the same 1s griping wishing we had him back. It’s gonna be a rude awakening for some of you all when it happens.

    2. callitlikeiseeit

With the best players every year, until this year, more titles should be one. I know the best team does not always win the title but when you have the best all the time more than 1 is expected. Geno wins it almost every year with the best talent, why can’t Cal more than once. The 38-0 year should have proven to all he can’t coach but we would rather blame refs, is what fans here do. No game should have been close enough for a ref to affect, if you remember we were lucky to get to the F4, Notre Dame nearly knocked us off.

I’m tired of these 1 and done’s. These kids come here for 6 months just to go to the league. They don’t care about us fans, the university or the tradition that we have here at BBN. These kids aren’t even here long enough to know their way around campus. I love Kentucky basketball but the one and done is no longer working!

    1. callitlikeiseeit

disagree that they all don’t care about BBN or UK. Some prolly don’t but alot of the past guys have shown great love to UK and BBN after leaving. Several come back for events and other things.

Ilovekaturday how about Cousins,Player of the year Anthony Davis,Noel,Randle,Karl Anthony Towns,Lyles, and Bam did I miss anybody

  9. Kat4Life

I’ve learned not to get too wound up about any high school player…….Nick Richards was the #1 C last year, and while a good prospect isn’t changing the world. Same with a lot of guys, Hami for instance. He was supposed to be something truly special (he isn’t) Truth is, you don’t know what you have until you actually have it. Proof’s in the playin’ in our world…..as Cal has said, I can’t hide you….you either play or show the world you can’t. The lights are pretty bright at Kentucky.

  10. ilovekaturday

As the one and done ever worked I mean honestly we had wall Bledsoe cousins and couldn’t even make the final four………with out the best player to go through kentucky in many moons Anthony Davis the turd birds beat is in 2012 with the FBI agents on their bench

  11. zielritter

Good player, but I’m finding it hard to get excited about these dime a dozen athletic but non super star top 25 kids. Hope he has an x-factor like SGA that surprises us, but without an AD/JW/JR/JM/etc phenom and/or Darius Miller type upperclassman we’re going to see sub-optimal results like this more frequently.

  12. BigBlueOnYou

Would be a huge get if cal can somehow get him, dude seems like a player.

  13. ilovekaturday

I would just love to see a nice skilled maybe less athletic player. That is gonna develop over 4 years and bring some leadership.
