The winners of CHOOSE OR LOSE get to have a post on here. This week’s winner Gutter2D has a special interest in today. He attended Bishop Ireton High School, home of Mike Williams, the new UK commitment. He has this to say:
hey fellas Im gutter2d on the football challenge. Anyway I grew up in Alexandria, VA (which is about 2 miles from Washington DC border) and attended Bishop Ireton High School from 1999 to 2003. I’m currently a senior at UK. So I guess Ill use the blog to give you a little insight about Ireton and my take on Mike Williams. Ireton used to be one of the worst basketball teams in the DC region (we were Kentucky football bad and lost all the conference games by 30 to 40 points), but then we hired famous Maryland coach Lefty Driesell’s son Chuck (he used to be an assistant at Maryland and then was Head Coach at some local college) in summer of 2003 and he brought in all these really tall international players from England, Nigeria, and Austrailia and now Ireton is pretty competitive. The problem we still have is that we play in the toughest basketball conference in the Nation (WCAC).
Mike Williams is a much BETTER recruit than Jared Carter. For Carter’s junior year he averaged a pathetic 5 points and 5 rebounds a game in KENTUCKY. The best competition he ever faced was Curtis Pulley a 6′3 center. Whereas Mike Williams plays against major D1 talent in almost every conference game. Major big man 2007 prospects from the WCAC are teammate Shane Walker (4 star Maryland committ), Jamar Samuels (3 star), Jerai Grant (Harvey Grant’s son, 3 star clemson commit), Vlad Moldoveanu (3 star), Zach Crimmins (2 star, 6′11) and Rockwell Moody (3 star, 2006 St. Joeseph signee). And those are just the big man prospects from the conference (more talent than all positions from the state of Kentucky combined). So ya Mike Williams’ junior numbers averages of 12 points, 8 rebounds are very impressive because it was against the best competition in the US. Lastly Mike Williams PRACTICES against 4 star Maryland committ 6′11 Shane Walker who plays PF.
Also he practiced against NBA draft Center prospect 7′1″ Kene Obi from Nigeria all last fall and winter (he attended Ireton for a little while and then had to withdraw cause his birth isnt documented and he’s probably 23…but he continued practicing with the team). I don’t even think you would get that good of a workout at Oak Hill. Anyway its great to see a player from my high school come to UK. If u would’ve told me that an Ireton player would sign with Kentucky in 2006 back when I went there I would have been really shocked. I played football against Sheray Thomas in our senior year of HS, and I watched Keith Bogans and Joe Forte dunk the ball about 5 times each when Dematha put on a circus against Ireton while I was in 8th grade. im out…peace

All I know is that if this guy practiced against Obi Wan Kene Obi, I expect more than just basketball prowess. I want to see him pick up some boxes with his mind, or at least lift Sheray Thomas into the air by pointing at his throat.
“This is not the center you are looking for….”

This post shows that most Internet recruiting fans don’t know a fraction of what’s the truth. Thanks for the info gutter2d. In cases like this it’s just better for us to trust the staff until the kid steps on the floor and we get to watch him firsthand.

Any project is a horrible first pickup….they should be an after thought in late spring

I disagree. Taking a project early won’t affect any other recruits and thus, shouldn’t make much of a difference in your recruiting efforts. It just gives you a bit of comfort having that first player on board. I actually like this pickup somewhat. Now it’s time to go get the big boys..

UK’s first recruit in 1990 was Carlos Toomer.
First in 1991 was Chris Harrison.
1994, Scott Padgett.
1995, Oliver Simmons.

The fan reaction is indicative of a larger movement in UK “fandom”. There seems to be a large number of miserable wretches out there who don’t like much in life. These people have to find the negative in anything and tear it down just so they don’t have to face the reality that the rest of the world isn’t as miserable as they are.
If we got OJ MAYO to commit to UK, the message boards would be equally full of negative press about how he’s overrated and the sky was falling. If our five-man class was Rivals’ 1 through 5, ti would be the same thing. The negativity comes first, and then they adjust the facts to fit their preconceived beliefs. Facts don’t matter to these dregs, only their desire to wallow in the mud of their own suffering.

FWIW, I would agree that Williams is a better major Division I prospect at this point than Jared Carter was at this point in his senior year. Carter at this point in his senior year had exactly zero offers from any school not named Morehead St.

More head … heh heh.

I think you have to hold off criticising this recruit until at least his SR season. Big men ussually come a long way their SR year of HS. Carter did not even start as a JR so to say Williams is better at this point is dead on.

KB is right. There would be those bitching if Mayo committed to UK, along the lines of “this guy has too much baggage”, “he’s not a team player”, “he only cares about getting to the NBA”, “we don’t need guys who’ll only be here for 1 or 2 seasons”, blah, blah, blah.
