    NOOOOOOOOO

  2. wldctky Says:

    W

  3. wldctky Says:

Why would he even offer a major project so early? That’s the kind of player you offer late in the spring when you already have a solid or a great class signed.

  4. Tom Gray Says:

    1 down, 4 or 5 to go.

  5. KB Says:

Well, with Woo being a senior and Carter supposedly “a different player” ready to play a lot more, I see the logic in bringing in a physical backup center, and we can even afford a bit of a project at that spot because Morris is still a 4/5 combo in reality (IF he comes back, of course).

Almost all the other bigs I’ve read about in relation to the Cats have been forwards, so this shouldn’t really impact any of our other recruiting (other than one less scholarship).

  6. Pasimp44 Says:

I think this kid is going to be much better than people think. He is not as much of a project as Shagari or Woo and has legit interest from a bunch of High Major schools, including UCONN. He has a huge frame and is already filled out. I saw him on his visit and was really blown away by how enormous he was. He will be a factor in a year or two.

  7. TubbyCAT Says:

This kid was being recruited by some big-time programs and not all good college players have to have or will have 4 or 5 stars next to their name. This kid will help the program and he is from all accounts a very good student and a respectable young man. Those are some of the qualities that Tubby is looking for in his recruits and those are good ones to ahve along w/his major upside.

  8. skentucky Says:

Tubby Strikes Again! The huge guys are way to slow for the college game. If I am Jai and
Patterson do I want a 5 man who cannot get down the floor. I dont think so.

Give me athletes Tubby, not projects.

  9. Tom Gray Says:

Williams averaged 12 points and 8 boards as a junior.

Reminds me of Nazr Mohammed, who was TERRIBLE as HS junior here in Chicago.

Better as a senior but still only second team All-State.

Played JV as UK frosh, then part-time starter as soph.

Made 1st team All-SEC as a junior under Tubby.

  10. Relevance Says:

And those who make our fanbase look bad strike again.

Why would it matter when he’s offered? We have a boatload of a rides to give, and his signing shouldn’t affect anyone else’s recruitment. If we want him, there’s no reason not to offer him now.

Saying something as general as “the huge guys are way too slow for the college game” is just ignorant.

  11. Wes Says:

I actually agree with Tom Gray in the fact that he reminds me of NAZR. Matt - our 7 feet freak show is secure for a little longer atleast (Do you think he can be the new Woo?)!

Seriously fellas, the kid has good hands and can be molded into a solid contributor if he is given the opportunity to develop. Is he a true freshamn show stopper…not at all, however, he can be a solid contributor in practice to help the big guys gear up for games, not to mention he is a solid student and he has a British accent. I mean who doesn’t want a 7 footer who says limey.

  12. T. Walters Says:

Again, as I said weeks ago, the comparisons with Mohammed aren’t warranted. The mere fact that he’s the
story most cite when trying to support Mike Williams’ potential is proof enough of how far he has to go.
Nazr was at UK nearly a decade ago, so the conversion from tall fat kid to legitimate player isn’t
common. Factor in that the kid is from England, where basketball is as prevalent as dental hygiene, and
you’ve got quite the hole from which Williams must dig himself out.

  13. mwildcat Says:

    YEAH OKAY AND YOUR POINT!!!
WE DON’T CARE IF HE IS FROM ICELAND, IF WE GOT HIM, WE GOT HIM, WHAT
WE DO ABOUT IT NOW, NOTHING!! I FOR ONE BELIEVE IN THREE YEARS
HE WILL BE A THREAT, SKILLS YOU CAN TEACH GREAT HAND’S YOU CAN’T,
I REMEMBER MARQUIS ESTILL’S HANDS, HE COULD CATCH OR TAKE A PASS RIGHT
INTO HIS HANDS AND SCORE, OR THROW AN OUTLET PASS LIKE NOONE I
HAVE SEEN IN RECENT YEARS, SO JUST MAYBE , JUST MAYBE HE WILL BECOME WHAT SHAGARI
    COULD NEVER DO, DOMINATE!!

  14. Anonymous Says:

    caps lock is your friend…

  15. SmokeyPearl Says:

I feel TONS better since Nazr turned out to be as good as he did.
    That means Williams will too!

  16. SugaShane Says:

He’s nothing like Shag, Woo, or Nazr because he already has skills. The kid understands his role
already and that’s to stand around the basket for rebounds and putbacks. It was a smart move to
let our other targets know now that they won’t play center like they would at other schools. He
may not even cost us a scholarship because he’s intelligent, works hard, and wants to learn
unlike some of our former players. I’m just as frustrated with the effort from coaches and
players last year and recruiting, but at some point you have to get behind your team.

  17. David Shuman Says:

Based on Jerry Tipton’s article, the kid is bright and a class act – a student athlete that we can be proud is wearing Kentucky Blue.

  18. T. Walters Says:

He’s British!! They always seem like they’re bright and classy. I’m not saying he’s not either of those
things, but I think that those people who are hyped up about this kid need to slow down a little and
realize that he’s a seven-foot project with bad knees. He hasn’t been playing the game all that long
and when he has played, the competition isn’t as solid as kid face over here.

Maybe he’ll work out, maybe he’ll be yet another worthless seven-footer on the roster. But just because
he signed with us doesn’t mean his jersey will be hanging in Rupp one day.

  19. Somervillain Says:

    He plays over here.

  20. Tom Gray Says:

He’s played in VA for 3 years now. 2004-05-06 seasons.

  21. Tom Gray Says:

#15 Tubby made Nazr into an NBA prospect in 1998. (He wasn’t in 1997)

Look for him to do the same with Williams in a few years.

  22. Tom Gray Says:

#12 you have no clue what Nazr Mohammed was like as a HS junior in 1994. I do - I live here.

Mike Williams is MORE ADVANCED than Nazr going into his senior year of HS.

  23. Somervillain Says:

    How about this:
This is a kid who knows what he wants. He has been presented with an opportunity and he is taking it, while others are milling it over, and quite possibly going to regret taking their time when their offers are taking by someone else.
This is a kid who has supposedly had some knee trouble, which might be due to the enormous amount of weight he put on his young and growing joints. So he lost alot of that weight. Good for him. This is a kid who is still learning basketball, because he didn’t grow up in a place where there is a hoop in every driveway. But as he grew, he saw an opportunity and so picked up the game. Again, wise decision. All of these things are in his favor. Is he GOING TO BE a good enough talent to help our Cats win a National Championship? Who knows. But he certainly has made some great decisions to give himself the chance to do something special.
Plus, even with all the more heralded forwards attending BBM, we do need size and we do need a center.
    Cheers, Mike. Welcome to Kentucky.

  24. KB Says:

Maybe he can spend some time here in Eastern Ky. We’ll having him sounding like a British hillbilly! “We’ll bloody well win the game, y’all.”

  25. barry Says:

If he works out great if he doesn’t so what. The kid is good enough to be recruited by others and he is tall and strong. Welcome aboard. It shouldn’t have anything to do with any other potential recruit as they are all forwards or guards. Hey Mike, if you’re out there, don’t let a couple of negative nuts discourage you. good luck.

  26. T. Walters Says:

If Tom Gray is so familiar with Nazr’s ability as a junior - which I am sure he is considering the
nearly freakish notes he keeps on young boys - because Nazr was from the Chicago area, then how does
he know that Williams is MORE ADVANCED than Mohammed, considering Williams lives in VA?

  27. Tom Gray Says:

#26 because I know how BAD Nazr was as a HS junior. Even YOU were a better basketball player then.

  28. T. Walters Says:

Again, Tom Gray, you’re wrong. I was a horrid basketball player, but I can remember thinking, even then,
that one day, there will be interactive blogs on the internet, and I will have the distinct misfortune to
suffer through some Trekkie loser’s repeated regurgitations of the UK media guide.

You’re point, assuming you have one, is that nearly a decade ago, Tubby made a good player out of a
project, so he SURELY will do the same now. A turnaround the likes of which we haven’t seen at UK in
years is what you’re predicting. Somehow, Rain Man, you’ve managed to become more pathetic than even I
    thought you were.

  29. Truth Patrol Says:

Tom Gray is full of it.

Nazr only spent ONE year under Tubby.

You can credit Rick Pitino for getting Nazr into shape and making him into an NBA talent.

  30. Truth Patrol Says:

Tubby had about as much to do with Nazr exploding into an NBA player as he did his first team winning the national championship.
