The Rupp Arena Task Force Met Today

by @ 12:20 pm. Filed under Blue Blooded Opinions

Planning!! Design!! Finance!! $350,000!! …All these powers combined, they are the Arena, Arts, and Entertainment TASK FORCE!!!

The Arena, Arts, and Entertainment Task Force met today to discuss how far along the team is in the Rupp Arena project. There weren’t a lot of newsworthy notes from the meeting; and no progress other than listening to potential options has really been made. Brent Rice, chairman of the Arena, Arts, and Entertainment Task Force, said a decision has still not been made on whether or not a brand new arena will be built. The task force is looking hard into renovating the current arena and expanding its amenities into the area that is currently the Lexington Convention Center.

Mayor Jim Gray said the pressure is not on to rush the project, but they do have an aggressive schedule. Gray said they are still on the first step of a 10-step project.

The task force has looked into other venues of all shapes and sizes, including Conseco Fieldhouse, Nationwide Arena, Phog Allen Fieldhouse, The Staples Center, The CenturyLink Center in Omaha, and tobacco district in North Carolina.

Designers say all options are on the table for this project to maximize fan experience.

So, basically, we still don’t know anything.

Enjoy your day.

If you build it, they will come.

  2. Big Bad Boogie Daddy Says:

    JUST BUILD IT ALREADY!!!!

  3. stevem Says:

New Arena at a minimum should include:

80,000 tilt back seats with cup-holders
200′ 3D video screen above playing floor
stripper poles in every other aisle
    bourbon dispensers on every aisle
    casino on mezzanine level
chapel with Adolph’s re-interred remains for the faithful
wildcat natural habitat in front lobby
painted ceiling ‘ala Michaelangelo depicting God in his UK jersey trying to dunk one on Bowie

  4. steve Says:

    No leadership, No vision!

Lexington will go the cheap way. There will be no new arena. We will get a half assed renovation that will mainly put $$$$$$$ in the pockets of people on the Task Force, including the Mayor.

The future for Lexington is for it to become and old city that slowly dies away. It lacks leadership though out the community that wants to focus on the future, they prefer to stay in the past.

  5. Iwearbluesunglassesatnight Says:

The only way to get all of this done is to get Cal involved. I believe he is busy right now though…. Anybody seen Cal?

  6. PatPattersonISwalkingthruthatdoor Says:

$350k. Think about that number, fellow Lexington taxpayers.

  7. SexnNursinHomes Says:

6- gaurantee ya they won’t be discussin this new arena at McDonalds or White Castle. I’d love to get in on that “business dinner”. 47 task forcers=$15,000 dinner bill.

  8. ukjonny8 Says:

Just build it already. I’ll still say 28-30,000 seats would get filled for most games and would guarantee NCAA games for the city.

  9. uk3k Says:

why dont we just play everygame on an aircraft carrier like michigan state?

also, has buying madison sqaure garden been discussed?

ESPN has this article posted featuring the opinions of their college b-ball writers on the best venues. Not a whiff of a Rupp Arena reference, and (unfortunately) deservedly so. It’s time to build a house worthy of the best basketball program in the country.

  11. Al's IndiCats Says:

MJ said it best, if they just renovate Rupp it’ll take 2 freakin years before the first game will be played, besides no BLUE hair will make that drive to play in Freedom Hall especially if it were to be a late game. BUT they do have to build it down town somewhere, or downtown Lexington will die a slow and miserible death.

  12. bosshogg24 Says:

$350,000 is a complete waste of money like an Obama spending spree! Forget the renovating and build a new arena. Where do you think the Wildcats are going to play while the building is renovated,at Transy or Dunbar?

  13. lollypop Says:

hers an article that explain a lot of what’s going on.

  14. Bobby G Says:

#6 – the study has been privately funded. $0 taxpayers dollars have been spent. Read the paper every once in a while.

  15. Bobby G Says:

#10 – did you even bother to read the article you linked? All of those guys picked arenas much older and smaller venues with less amenities than Rupp Arena… the words “tradition” and “history” were used by almost everyone. Idiot much?

  16. cheap cigarettes online Says:

I couldn’t agree more with some of your thoughts, I found this to be an awesome writing, thanks a bunch. I added a link to your page on my site: http://www.onlinedutyfreeshop.com/featured.php, Keep up the great writing
