Yesterday was the beginning of the preseason session for the basketball program that goes by the name of “Boot Camp.” All programs have preseason conditioning, and Kentucky’s past coaches have attempted to get their teams into running shape prior to the season. However with Gillispie, the preseason conditioning has taken on a completely different tone, symbolized by its “Boot Camp” name. But what exactly is Boot Camp, and how does it work? While there has been no official release as to what goes on, I spoke last year with Razor Ramon Palin for a preseason interview for a magazine, and he described a day of Boot Camp thusly:
6 AM — First set of running and sprinting drills
8 AM — Prep and Class
11 AM — Long jog
12 PM — Lunch
1 PM — Class
3 PM — Weight training
4:30 PM — Sprints and other running drills
6 PM — Dinner
7 PM — Tutoring, etc
Now of course this is just one example, but that is a full day…..certainly more than Mosley has ever gotten accomplished in one afternoon. It makes me tired just thinking about it.

13. There are 4 hours per day designated to running and conditioning. Do you realize how many sprints you could run in 4 hours? Guarantee you would be brought to your knees if you went through it.

If you don’t want to be called crazy, don’t say crazy things.

If we see a another rash of “stress fractures” I may picket BCG’s practices…and PLEASE no more full out practices the day of a game…. just sayin…

17. For God sakes I’m so tired of hearing that. Pitino’s UK teams practiced very hard on gameday, nobody seemed to care then. We’ve got doctors and trainers saying the workouts are fine, yet Tipton and some fans think otherwise.

Lets move this discussion back to that other thread that turned into a turd-flinging contest, and leave this one for a discussion of the boot camp.
Ramon Harris is going to be good this year. If he improves his shot, I would say he is NBA material.
September 30th, 2008 at 4:35 pm
wow, thats a pretty bold statement, what did he average last year like, 3.5 points a game?
September 30th, 2008 at 4:39 pm
7–”Did you order the code red?!”

I had a coach in college that liked to turn the heat in the gym as high as he could get. Make everybody wear full sweat gear and set up puke buckets along the sidelines. We ran till everybody on the team puked. And most of the time it was after lunch. I believe Bear Bryant was his favorite coach. I still have nightmares.
September 30th, 2008 at 5:09 pm
28 — WOW. I like your optimism, but WOW. He needs a lot more improvement than on just his shot.
September 30th, 2008 at 5:46 pm
Pilgrim is NBA material. Anyone who doesn’t think so, JUST WAIT ! lol
September 30th, 2008 at 5:56 pm
That’s some schedule……it’s hard enough for me to work out 2hrs 3 times a week. I’d be ripped if I had that routine.

Boot camp in the military is possibly the hardest thing any young recruits have ever experienced, other than combat. I just know this from my sons who were in the military.
That picture is probably depicting a member of the unit that thought he could not make it and the fellow guys were pushing him to get up and continue. That is the team spirit in the military.
Billy G’s boot camp is in no way comparable to the real thing even though it may be tougher than other college coaches pre-season conditioning and practice.
I am sure that other members here that went through boot camp in the Marines, etc could tell you folks all about it.

The purpose of “Boot Camp” is to unite the players early on by giving them an adverse situation they all must face together. They will develop a common ground…..everyone will dread and complain about how hard it is and rightfully so. In the end, our guys will come to realize they must lift one another up in order to get through. Thus, becoming a close knit group. Ultimately, it develops player confidence and FREAK LIKE conditioning going into the season.

#36 That is right on. I read something last season when Joe C and Ramel were sitting outside of Joe Craft and Joe was not sure he wanted to go back to practice…but Ramel (our always optimistic Wildcat and never afraid of any obstacle) told Joe C that he must if he wanted to be a Wildcat.
That first season for them with a new Coach who demanded the best from every player was hard at the beginning of the season, I suppose they had never been pushed before.
If not for Coach G I honestly don’t think Joe would have made it to the NBA. Ramel is another story…he will be successful somewhere. I love both guys. They gave their hearts and souls to the team last season.
