Tubby Praises Cats and Gillispie

Lost in our earlier story about Daniel Orton was the second part of Jerry Tipton’s interview with his father. Orton’s father said that he had contacted Tubby Smith about Kentucky and that Tubby both praised the University and Billy Gillispie as a coach. Orton’s father spoke about how much that meant to him and how positive it was for Kentucky’s chances.

Regardless of what you think about Tubby Smith as a coach, there is no denying what a great individual Tubby Smith is on and off the court. He represented this University well while he was here and continues to speak well of it after leaving for Minnesota. A lesser person might take a chance to take subtle shots at his former place of employment (Rick Pitino) when given the chance. Tubby has never done that and has always taken the high road, even when he did not have to do so. It says a lot about him and it is great for the University that Tubby continually takes such an approach.

Great coach who just seemed to get burnt out at UK. It can happen.

  2. ukcatfan88 Says:

I’ve always said Tubby was a good man but an average coach. BCG is a good man and a good coach.

  3. BillyClyde4President Says:

Tubby is a good man but just wasn’t the right man for the UK job. I wish him the best at Minn.

I wonder who will be the next big committment Gillispie gets

  7. RememberTheMember Says:

    Hooray for Tubby…

  8. GoCats Says:

Tubby is a great man he was just never able to meet our expectations. We expect to win every game by 30 and be in the Final Four every year. I do not see anything wrong with those expectations.

  9. Tommy Says:

    5) You’ve asked this question a couple of times. I’m pretty sure he played, just wasn’t thrown to.

  10. I Am Not Chris Robbins Says:

Tubster is AWESOME!! i’m glad he’s gone! R.I.P Tubster.
    #7) Hip Hip…HOOORAAAYYY!! lol.
someone feed him a cookie for having “class”…good grief.

  11. JimmyJam Says:

Come on all you danglers, lets hear it, “TUBBY IS SUCH A GOOD PERSON WAHH WAHH WAHHHH” STill, a horrible, lazy coach that has never sent a player he recruited to a final four.

  12. JerryTownBlotter Says:

MEEKSistheMAN I keep voting but I noticed today that the #1 vote totals for coach arent going up. Hoping you are an expert on this poll please advise.

  13. I Am Not Chris Robbins Says:

    8) actually no that’s not true. we just didn’t expect to go backwards with the program is all…it’s that simple. the idea is to get better, not worse. here we go again with the anti vs pro tubby fans..great! seems to only start when we praise how great he is and how much class he has…perfect! this should be an interesting thread.

  14. I Am Not Chris Robbins Says:

    11) exactly, lets throw him a frigg’n cookie here for having “class” and generally being a good person!?!?! really? wow, such “high” expectations from some of us..lol. what did we expect? that his 2nd year as a new coach in a new area where he’s trying to build a positive foundation that he would bad mouth UK to a top recruits father? oh that would have just been ideal for him right? come on..use some frigg’n brains…

  15. GoCats Says:

13)You do not understand my argument at all. There should not be pro-tubby/anti-tubby debates EVER. We are all UK fans and we should support and show respect for every part of our history. Everyone hates Sutton but if it wasn’t for him we would have never had the Unforgettables. You don’t have to like him but every part of UK’s history deserves our respect.

  16. The 5 Star Dribbler Says:

    11) & 14) Let it go…He’s gone..He could’ve bad mouth but, didn’t.

  17. UKNation Says:

Tubby was a great coach just not a great recruiter and didn’t have a very good support staff.
I don’t ever recall him ever getting “out-coached” in any game, maybe didn’t have the man power
    but not out coached.

  18. I Am Not Chris Robbins Says:

    15) Respect is one thing but dealing with the facts and looking at where we were before him and where we ended up with him is a completely different thing. i respect him for coaching at UK yes; of course i do, however i do not respect him for the lackluster attempt he made at keeping us anywhere close to where we were when he first came aboard..at this he failed miserably. denying that is basically saying you didn’t see or feel where we were when he first came on board with, and i repeat, Pitino’s kids who wont the national championship. so no, i’m not missing your point, i’m simply also pointing out a simple fact that also deserves it’s own respect. i guess the question for some people who adore tubby, is what do they respect more? he himself as a nice “respectable” “classy” guy or the fact that we ended up much worse under his leadership and slowly but surely lost respect in the basketball community becoming the blunt of many jokes and being disrespected on ESPN and beaten by teams we previously killed year after year in the SEC……go figure.

  19. funkadelic Says:

I believe Pitino said UK would be “set back 10 years” after Tubby left. I enjoyed 1998.

  20. I Am Not Chris Robbins Says:

    16) use common sense…no he wouldn’t have badmouthed. if he did it would have been a stupid mistake…he knew that. again, i never mention tubster until someone talks about how great he was and how classy he was…so yes, let him go and forget about him….but if you bring him up and make him out to be some classy guy and praise him; expect the other half as well my friend.

  21. Lee20ky Says:

Any know what happened to D.J. Stafford? I know he didn’t qualify last season and was curious where he ended up and if he will try to enroll for 09. Scout says he’s at Harmony Prep.

    GO CATS!!!

  22. I Am Not Chris Robbins Says:

    19) i’m glad you said that because he was correct. after his players left, we went backwards and lost tons of respect and yes i agree with him on that. if not 10 years very very close…i’d say 7 for certain.

  23. GoCats Says:

#18 You are arguing with yourself apparently. I respect Tubby as a coach and a person. No I was not happy with how the last 9 seasons ended but if they don’t end in a National Championship then I am not happy. Rupp’s last 14 years did not have a National Championship and only one Final Four. Do you have problems with him? Did Rupp get lazy and stop recruiting after 1958?

  24. The 5 Star Dribbler Says:

You will praise thee Tubster and like it.

  25. SagaciousMind Says:

I think Pitino meant to say UK was set back 10 years after he left. UK is on the right track again thanks to Gillispie. It’s not that Tubby was a bad coach, he just didn’t have that recruiting desire. But I am glad he doesn’t bad mouth UK, seems like he is helping out if you ask me.

  26. JimmyJam Says:

    25) Pitino was absolutly correct. It did send us back 10 years, back on our way to greatness where we was when Tubby took over

  27. I Am Not Chris Robbins Says:

    23) no, not arguing with myself. it’s not about winning a national championship every year…no way..not even about winning one every 7 or 8 years…it’s about keeping things on a continual positive movement. he didn’t do that. i wasn’t alive when Adolph Rupp coached so i have no clue about how the game was back then…recruiting and the game itself i do believe changed VERY much since Rupp’s time my man.

  28. GoCats Says:

Just so you know I am not arguing with you. I completely agree that Tubby needed to go, we needed to revive the program because the excitement and energy was gone. It is definitely back with Gillispie and it feels great. However, I have ZERO interest in bashing any part of the history of this great program. I love every part of it. Unless of course you mention Coury starting every game last year then I start to feel queasy.

  29. AZ Blue Says:

Tubby’s last two years were bad but the first 8 were very good - we were favored in most of the games we played. I think we had 3 #1 seeds and a bunch of #2s/#3s. I think the last two were bad because he had very poor asst. coaches helping him with the recruiting. Of course, he is the one that hired them.

Pitino’s comment about UK falling back 10 years was if UK fired Tubby. I still think BCG needs one more year to build a team… but UK needs to start winning big from 2009-10 onwards otherwise we be in for another coaching change. I think BCG will pull it off.

  30. The 5 Star Dribbler Says:

    27) It’s all David Hobb’s fault.

  31. The 5 Star Dribbler Says:

    28) Will Flurry be remembered as the “Forgetable”?

  32. I Am Not Chris Robbins Says:

    29) first 8 were very good? : ) i guess yea it must have been the last 2 that sent us back 10 years : ) hehe…whatev…agree to disagree as Ron Burgandy says.
i feel bad for Flurry. wonder wtf he will do now honestly? play for Duke maybe?

  33. ukcatfan88 Says:

    My head hurts now.

  34. flipisatrip Says:

    i love the tubster.

    what a badass pic

  35. wick Says:

    32. You’re an embarassment.

  36. KYERIC Says:

Tubby + Electric Slide = Awesomeness.

Everybody else who constantly dogs this guys out can suck it. Fact is he was a great coach at UK and decided to leave. End of story. The great thing is he still is a great coach and continues to help UK out. It is just another testament to his character that he continues to do things for our school in spite of the douchebag stat boys that constantly complain “no FF”. Give it a rest.

    Boogie-woogie-woogie!

  37. Forrest4Three Says:

What was he going to say?

He knew it was going to be published in the LHL.

Screw Tubby… Screw his “character” and class
He makes me sick. If he was so classy he could give back some money to UK that he swindled.

  38. ILovetheCats Says:

I was sad to see the Tubbster go. I know we needed a change, but he is such a good guy. I miss seeing those mean eyes on the court. The best of luck to him in Minnesota.

  39. Hink Says:

That’s bad that some of you who post on here has more love for Ricky P, who disrespect UK anytime he gets a chance.
The same coach that went to are biggest rivial to coach.
Yet anytime Tubby dose anything some fans takes shots at him.
    Give the guy a break.
    uofl SUCKS!
Thank You Coach Smith for the years you given us.

  40. Roofus Howls Says:

It’s amazing that Tubby says good things about the fans, but some fans can’t say good things about Tubby.

    # 37 - do you really think he should pay money back? For winning 20 + games and 1 game in the NCAA tourney? For recruiting Jodie Meeks (assuming you’re referencing the last 2 years of his watch)?

I understand being disappointed. I understand thinking a change was in order. I understand thinking he was overpaid. I can’t understand any logical argument that would say he should have to pay money back when his standard of “poverty” is clearly higher than the level of posterity for 95% of the programs in the country.

I’m all for BCG. I agree that it was time for OTS to leave. It would have been easy for him to have said - “You know, the fans and I had our ups and downs, but they’re really passionate and they support the players.” But he didn’t even say that. He was positive. Good grief, if Tubby walked on water some would talk about how he couldn’t swim.

  41. Bristow Says:

People who talk hatefully about Tubby suck.

  42. I Am Not Chris Robbins Says:

    35) you sir are the embarrassment if you are another tubby lover.
you tubby lovers are unbelievable. i’ll say this though, you stick together that’s for sure. delusional as you are you do stick together; i’ll give you that for certain..meanwhile the rest of us will remember the way it was and what it really was.

  43. WVwildcat3354 Says:

    This is from ESPN:

No. 2 Center Daniel Orton favors Kentucky
Larry Orton, the father of ESPNU 100 center Daniel Orton, told the Lexington Herald-Journal his son currently favors the Kentucky Wildcats among his college choices.

“I would kind of say that,” the elder Orton said.

Larry Orton said the main reason Daniel likes UK is simply “basketball”.

Orton will visit the Lexington campus Oct. 9-11 for its Big Blue Madness celebration. He is also consideing Oklahoma State, Ohio State, Kansas and Oklahoma.

  45. BravoBigBlue Says:

#39 - Hink - Is that you from the radio? Otis, my man!

  46. UKisKing8 Says:

Those who have something negative to say about Tubby simply reveals who they are…

the rest of us know who Tubby is, and we thank him for his time here.

  47. sortleader2 Says:

    17. summed it up best. Best of luck to you Tubby, so long as it’s not against the Cats! Stay classy 4.

  48. Forrest4Three Says:

Matt Jones luvs him some Tubby. ha

  49. Hink Says:

    #45
    The one, the only.
    Often imitated, never duplicated

    uofl SUCKS!

  50. Roofus Howls Says:

Get my head out of the clouds? Whatever. I’m simply being pragmatic. Your anger over second round exits and poor recruiting has you “demanding” someone to set a precedent that would be disastrous for society and business in general.

I know a woman who was fired from her job. I guess she should have to pay back some money from her salary.

I guess Joe Torre should pay the Yankees a lot of money back for not winning a World Series the past how ever many years.

I typed each of the following: I understand being disappointed. I understand thinking a change was in order. I understand thinking he was overpaid.

I just don’t think anyone can expect someone to pay back salary that was owed them.
