[Moderated by Matt Jones, Drew Franklin and Tyler Thompson]

I just talked to Matt, who confirmed through a source that Twany Beckham is joining UK as a walk-on this week , though the role could eventually earn him a scholarship down the road. He will be eligible to play next December. Beckham is a former Ballard High School star and averaged 2.9 points per game for Mississippi State this year as a sophomore before deciding to transfer. He sat out all of last season after surgery on both hips.
Twany had this to say to Evan Daniels this morning: “I’m a Wildcat. This is the happiest day of my life.”

January 18th, 2011 at 9:46 am
He will have 1.5 years to play at UK,Jonah.

Go Cats!
January 18th, 2011 at 9:47 am
1) according to this, he’ll have 2.5 years
January 18th, 2011 at 9:48 am
1) ooops, I meant 1.5
January 18th, 2011 at 9:48 am
Did he take his redshirt year at Miss St? If not, why would he not have the second half of his soph season plus two more after he sits one (2.5 years to play)?
January 18th, 2011 at 9:49 am
I’m coming after your minutes, Jon Hood.
January 18th, 2011 at 9:50 am
Did you see me in “Witchboard”? I was HOT.
January 18th, 2011 at 9:52 am

January 18th, 2011 at 9:53 am
Welcome home Twany!
January 18th, 2011 at 9:54 am
6) yeah you’re right …. next year he’ll be able to finish his sophmore season after Christmas
January 18th, 2011 at 9:57 am
why does he have to sit until december? why can’t he start the beginning of next season
January 18th, 2011 at 9:57 am
I see that he redshirted for his hip surgeries. He will have 1.5 years, but may be able to petition for a sixth year, depending on what happens.
January 18th, 2011 at 9:58 am
11 – actually, he will finish his junior year, unless he can get his medical redshirt year back.
January 18th, 2011 at 9:59 am
12 – he has to sit a full year, December to December. He played the first part of this season for the Dogs.
January 18th, 2011 at 10:01 am

January 18th, 2011 at 10:15 am
welcome to bbn! hope your ready to win and hang banner # 8 or 9! also interested in what # he will wear and when can he start practicing?
January 18th, 2011 at 10:22 am
The NCAA will deny his 6th year of eligibility in 3 years, that’s how long it will take them…
January 18th, 2011 at 10:22 am
Hopefully this guy can contribute. I would LOVE to have an Anthony Epps type coming in off the bench for some stability.
January 18th, 2011 at 10:28 am
I though Cal didn’t like WOs? What were his HS stats?
January 18th, 2011 at 10:29 am
#20, they will only reject it if he isn’t in graduate school at the time.
January 18th, 2011 at 10:38 am
Welcome back to the Bluegrass Twany.
January 18th, 2011 at 10:43 am
Did I miss something about this guy? Does he have talent, or is he just a practice body?
January 18th, 2011 at 10:44 am
22. 16.6 ppg, 8.1 rpg, 4.3 apg, 2.6 spg for the State Runner-Up. (I think those were pre state tournament stats).
January 18th, 2011 at 10:45 am
#21 – I’m sure you meant no disrespect, but Epps never came off the bench for long. As a freshman, he was victory cigar, but after that, he always ended up running the show. As much as Pitino wanted fancy new recruit Wayne Turner to be the guy, Epps kept Turner coming off the bench until Epps left b/c all Epps ever did was win, lead, win and win some more. He lead UK in assists for 3 of his 4 seasons, scored only when necessary by hitting open threes and making 80+% of his FTs, and started on 1 NC and 1 runner-up team. Sorry for the “rant.” I was a huge Epps fan – I think he is among the most underrated UK players evah.

Beckham put up good numbers in high school. He was the star on Ballard’s state runner-up team his senior season. I don’t remember his exact stats but I think it was something in the neighborhood of 16 ppg, 8rpg, 6 apg. After his sophomore season he was in contact with schools like UK, UL, IU, and Illinois but some scouts felt his game didn’t continue to develop enough (especially his outside game). He was originally going to go to IUPUI, but elected to go to prep school instead where he developed more of an outside game. At Mississippi state the things holding him back were playing behind upperclassmen and injuries. I think this is a great get for Calipari as he will provide a solid backup point guard next year with SEC experience (not sure how much that counts for these days), but he also may compete for a starting job his senior year with Knight, Teague, Lamb, Miller, and Liggins all likely gone.
January 18th, 2011 at 10:47 am
At one time you lost a year if you transfered inside your own conference. Not sure if that’s still out there or not.
In fact, I’m not sure ANY NCAA RULE is actually in writing anywhere or if they just make them up as they go!
January 18th, 2011 at 10:49 am
Can he practice NOW?
January 18th, 2011 at 10:53 am
I’m with 25 – Maybe I’m missing something too. He had good numbers in high school, but it sounds like the scouts were right about his game not developing. I understand he’s been hampered by injuries and playing behind others, but it seems like the same thing would happen at UK so why do we want a guy who averages 2.9 points per game?
January 18th, 2011 at 10:53 am
I was looking at his stats for this year. Not bad, he started a lot of games for MSU and rebounded the ball pretty well, also a nice assist-turnover ratio. Can really come in next year and provide depth for our PG spot. Still want Lacey, But welcome to BBN Twany
January 18th, 2011 at 10:56 am
can’t see him getting much pt, playing behind jarrod polson

Is his dad named Twan? So they called him Twany?
January 18th, 2011 at 2:27 pm
It is my understanding he left Mississippi State because a JC transfer took his playing minutes.
January 18th, 2011 at 2:48 pm
Hey 34 I’m still laughing. Polson must know someone really up the chart at Kentucky.
January 18th, 2011 at 2:49 pm
MSS coach has a hard time keeping guards from transferring. Remember Ben Hansbrough?
January 18th, 2011 at 4:34 pm
if he can’t play for msu what makes you think he can play for UK- waste of time, imo
January 18th, 2011 at 5:50 pm
Tall guard, the type Cal likes. I figure since Cal (and not many here) has coached more than a few college games, he may see something in this kid. Tawny WANTS to be a Cat, nice to pick up a player who wants to wear “The Jersey”. Best of luck to you Tawny.
January 18th, 2011 at 6:58 pm
What he really said was “I’m out of Mississippi. This is the happiest day of my life!”
