New Name on the UK Radar — Tyrone Nash

by @ 10:11 pm. Filed under Blue Blooded Opinions

It is time to get to know the newest important name on the UK radar screenTyrone Nash, the latest power forward that Kentucky has its eyes on. He is visiting TOMORROW and has been offered a scholarship. He is a kid from Long Island who was beginning to attract attention from Big East schools, but most wanted him to prep for a year so that they could see more. But it looks like with the power forward situation at UK next year, UK needs to see no more. We will try to learn more about the kid, but start watching….he may be the newest Cat. Here is some info:

He was named Long Island Player of the Year last season

A questionnaire with Nash on a New York Hoops Website

Here is a blog posting about the kid on a Marquette board from a few months ago. The text of the post is below:

Tyrone Nash is a kid who was considering prep schools and mid-majors before the season started. As his senior season moved along, interest in Nash picked up - - he’s now being recruited more heavily by Marquette, Providence, Notre Dame, Georgetown and St. John’s according to Scout.com and NYHoops.com. He apparently is still considering the prep school route as well.

The 6′7″, 205 pound Nash is an honors student out on Long Island at Lawrence Woodmere Academy. As a junior, he led his team to the NY State Federation Semifinal game, averaging 12 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and four blocks. Nash missed his sophomore season with a knee injury.

Nash had a terrific senior season. He was selected as the 2005-2006 Long Island POY by Long Island Basketball which says, “Unless you’ve seen him play, its hard to believe all the things the 6′8 Nash can do. He dominates in the low post. He knocks down jump shots with ease, and he brings the ball down court against the press.”

NYHoops.com also named Nash as their Long Island POY, noting that he “was the most consistent threat on Long Island all season long. Nash led the Woodmere Tigers to a final record of 23-4 and a berth in the class “A” federation state championship game. Despite an 81-75 loss to Peekskill, Nash was still strong in defeat, scoring 16 points, grabbing 10 rebounds, and blocking 5 shots.”

In this recap of LWA’s loss in the Federation Title game, this report from the local Peekskill paper called Nash “the best player on the court”.

Nash was recently named to regional roster for the upcoming the Jordan Classic All-Star Game, which will be played April 22 at Madison Square Garden.

Here is a quick profile of Nash from New NYHoops, which rates Nash as the 15th best senior in the NYC area this year. Here’s a recap of one of Nash’s strong performances from earlier this season, which includes a shot of him in action on the court.

Update*** I need to learn that the race goes to the swift in this business. Two days ago I heard from a UK source that a new power forward was on the horizon for potential recruitment and then this information was confirmed the same day by the best UK “insider” on message boards (hello Carolina Wildcats). I was going to drop the name tonight and it looks like Dave Telep at Kentucky Sports Report beat me to it so I want to make sure he gets the credit. Shows just how good Telep is. ****

I think this was kind of a desperate move after Dan Werner ditched UK for the Florida Gaytors

  2. mrhotdice Says:

UK’s needs are more for a player like Rich than Werner. Rich can rebound.

  3. jester4cats Says:

well youre kind of an idiot.

  4. Tom Gray Says:

No doubt CW is the best.

  5. Aaron Says:

Hope we get this kid sounds like we could use him this year.

  6. Patrick Parker Says:

I hope we get this kid as well. I say if he works hard, theres no telling how he might turn out.

  7. Tom Gray Says:

And HE’S A LEFTY like Erik Daniels.

    Perry Stevenson also lefthanded BTW.

  8. Tom Gray Says:

Starter at Jordan Classic http://www.nike.com/jumpman23/classic/06boxscore/06RegionalGame.pdf in NYC this spring.

  9. T. Walters Says:

So when is Tom Gray going to post is stats through his Junior Pro days? I really would like to know his assist-to-turnover
ratio back when he was nine before I pass any judgement.

  10. Tom Gray Says:

Matt posted those in his original story.

  11. Tom Gray Says:

His last name is Nash, not Rich FYI.

Perry Stevenson is NOT left handed.

  12. Tom Gray Says:

Correct, Perry Stevenson is a righty.

  13. kc Says:

A last resort pickup but i think if he does come he is more ready to play now than
    Perry Stevenson

  14. jeffukmd Says:

on all these message boards…..we need to stay positive on this kid and show him that he is wanted and needed. We aren’t going after him just to have another player on the team….we are going after him b/c we can use him. Stay positive…..and go get him.

  15. Tom Gray Says:

Neither of those were posted by me. The Perry Stevenson I saw at Roundball Classic here was LH.

  16. Ron Morgan Says:

Are we considered a (or the) leader for him? Sounds like he has a ton of potential. RM

  17. Tom Gray Says:

Nash is likely to commit. If you watched the roundball classic and thought that Perry Stevenson was left handed then I don’t know what to tell you. I guess you were watching the wrong player. Check out his video. He is right handed.

  18. Matt Jones Says:

I hear that a commitment is possible this week.

  19. Tom Gray Says:

I might be confused - were there 2 Stevensons in the Roundball game. The one I saw was tall and skinny.

  20. T. Walters Says:

What’s his blood type, Tom? You should know the difference at some level. Find some random stats from his t-ball career or
something. Don’t let us down! Post something we can all ignore!

  21. Wayne Says:

heard from a Lexington buddy via landline that we got a commitment from this kid. Any truth

  22. T. Walters Says:

One thing I just realized about this particular posting that I missed the first time. Marquette has a board? Marquette? Who
runs that? Amal McCaskill? Jim McIlvaine?

  23. Matt Jones Says:

Have not heard officially yet but I think we will have one before the end of the week.

    Nice McCaskill reference.

  24. Scooby Says:

Tom Gray clearly needs a life.

  25. Cracked Sidewalks Says:

hey now TWalters……of course Marquette has a board (and a blog!). Once in a while, folks reminisce about the NCAA tourney games agianst UK
    in 2003 and 1994. ;-)

Good luck next season - you guys have quite a program.

  26. michelle wee Says:

    Wow!!!
    Cracked Sidewalk-
    You folks actually have”one” moment
in which to reminisce?—Must be nice to
be able to reflect on a single time?? (no Pressure)

  27. T. Walters Says:

Yes, Scooby, he does. And, a move out of his Mom’s basement would also be useful.

  28. Tom Gray Says:

My Mother died in January 2004. I live with my wife in the Chicago area. FUAH.

  30. Rugby Fan Steve Says:

Rugby players spend a lot of time physical training Compared to other form of sports.I have read the
Rugby laws mentioned on this site. It’s a gripping sport which targets the grip strength and the active mindedness of a player. American football and rugby league are also primarily collision sports, but their tackles tend to terminate much more quickly. For professional rugby, players are often chosen on the basis of their size and apparent strength and they develop the skill and power over the passage of time. In modern rugby considerable attention is given to fitness and aerobic conditioning as well as basic weight training.
