Bryan the Intern’s Picks to Click

by @ 10:00 am. Filed under Blue Blooded Opinions

This is a driver.  Would someone please tell Greg Norman if he took this club out of his hand, he would have won a damn major yesterday.  Look, I like Greg Norman, and he has a hell of a lot talent.  But he really sucks at the mind aspect of it.

If you are interested in advertising with KSR, please email me at bryan.hash@wku.edu.

Interesting fact of the day: Tennessee returns 3 WR’s who caught more than 55 balls last season.  No other SEC team returns more than one, and 8 SEC teams return nobody who caught more than 55 passes last year.

Spent yesterday watching a relative at a Little League tournament.  WOW, they (meaning parents) are taking that stuff a little toooo serious.  I am not joking, I sat through an HOUR AND A HALF protest in the game before the one I was watching.  And this was for the 9-10 year olds.  I am not a father, but parents seem to forget that the point of this WHOLE thing is so kids can play and have a good time.  And they more forget they ARE NOT part of the game.

1. Good article by John Clay about the new and improved Billy Gillispie

3. Trevard Lindley getting some national attention

4. Another great story about the big heart of Coach Gillispie

5. Wonderful story on Outside the Lines about children participating in MMA (trust me, WATCH THE STORY, and prepare to be stunned at the idiocy of parents)

6. 50 greatest putback dunks in basketball history

7. White guy tries dunking, hillarity ensues

8. Funny newscast about President Bush’s presidency

9. Michelle Wie sucks and I love it (and if I hear one more guy call her “hot” I will punch them and then take a driver to their knees)

Dude, she’s hot. Seriously, when she’s 20, look out.

  2. doylerules27 Says:

    Dude, she is smokin’ hot.

  3. d1ja Says:

as for #7, the next video “Kid Smashes Head On Rim” is even funnier. i like the way he starts the recording “this is going to be amazing !”

  4. wildcatmatt Says:

The only thing better is if it was Michelle Wie trying to do that dunk, and then busting her ass. Agreed, she is nothing more than a WAYYY overhyped prodigy that made nothing of it. No work ethic = not getting paid.

  5. wildcatmatt Says:

Not getting paid for winning a golf tournament rather, her endorsements still pay her until her contrcts run out and they realize she will never be any good.

  6. 69Z Says:

Your knowledge of golf could fill a thimble. Did you ever think hitting the driver is what put him in the lead after 3 days and that he didn’t have confidence in playing it any other way? Please enlighten us oh swami. Not only could Norman beat you at golf one handed but he could do it with his left hand while back handing you with his right. Show some respect for your betters.

  7. Bryan the Intern Says:

    6) Norman’s hands are too busy giving his ex-wife 100 million

  10. Bryan the Intern Says:

    6) Golf is all about adjustments, and I didnt think Norman did a good job of adjusting, he may have hit the driver well for 3 rounds, he hit it terrible yesterday and it put him in terriblt spot after terrible spot, what really got me was he saw harrington hitting fairways and giving himself birdie chances and never thought that might be the way to play, you have to adjust to the conditions and I dont think Norman did that at all

  11. _Blackhawk_ Says:

The kids doing MMA is crazy to me….I have been a fan since the first UFC and have followed it closely. As much as I love the sport I wouldn’t want my boys fighting like that at 7 years old.

I have looked into them taking Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu here in town but that has no striking involved.

Just don’t think that is safe fro the kids that young. Heck the pros of the sport are all the time breaking a bone or tearing a muscle or having to have some type of surgery and those are the ones that know what they are doing.

Just an all around bad idea….sad thing is kids over seas have been doing this long before MMA was introduced here in the US.

  12. drmarc Says:

    69Z I think #10 says it all.

  13. wildcatmatt Says:

    10) Agreed. After losing 2 strokes and being tied with Paddy after 7 holes, you hit the 3-5 wood until you get comfortable off the tee. Then, if you lose a couple more strokes after the next 7 holes, pull out the driver and try to catch him. If you don’t lose anymore, you keep hitting the fairway woods. 6) Just because I occasionally run in a 40 foot putt don’t mean I try to run them everytime. Adjusting your game according to your position is key to winning a tournament, especially one this difficult. IF you have a 6 stroke lead, you don’t shoot for pins on the final 4 holes….unless your Tiger.

  14. wildcatmatt Says:

PS. The ONLY reason this is not considered a CHOKE, is because he is 53 years old. I am a Norman fan, but he shot a 77 in the final round, on the best scoring day of the week.

  15. slappy Says:

Kids in MMA is absolutely retarded. We live in a country where parents are so sensitive about their kids’ feelings that they put them in sports leagues where they don’t keep score or give trophies because they don’t want the kids to deal with losing, but we’ll drop them in a cage and let them bludgeon other kids? I can’t figure out whether it’s hilarious or sad.

  16. ukcatsfan2 Says:

Michelle Wie IS hot and I think she needs a hug!

Hit me in the knees and I’ll sue your ass!

  17. arterah1 Says:

Courtney Lee #18 on the Top 50 Putbacks! Nice.

  18. Phili5 Says:

I’m firmly in the, “Michelle Wie is hot!” camp.
If you cant see that, then there is something wrong with you.
I’m open for debate when it comes to Candace Parker.

  19. I'm Just Sayin Says:

Word now trickling out that Brad Reese is a no go. Can’t get him qualified.

  20. bluemeaway Says:

I remember Espn the magazine had Michelle Wie as a part of thier Next issue when she was 12 or 13. In the little piece they wrote they said she would give Tiger a run for his money. I guess shes hot if all you have is the girls at your high school to compare her to.

  21. CatsFan4Life Says:

“She was like a little kid after you tell them there’s no Santa Claus,” Witters said. WHAT?????

  22. smiddy911 Says:

    wow…really sloowwww today.

  23. TimPRP Says:

#11 and #15- You guys ok with young kids playing football?

  24. 69Z Says:

Golf is about playing to your strengths. Norman only hit a couple of fairways Saturday but still had one of the better scores of the day because he drove it long enough that he could play out of the rough with shorter clubs into the greens. That strategy is what he wanted to follow on Sunday but he drove it into the longer stuff a couple of times and it backfired on him. There were only a couple of instances where it was obvious to me he had the wrong club off the tee. I think it was #7 and another time on the back. But just because I think he would have been better of playing something other than driver off the tee doesn’t mean he was wrong. He thought it was worth the risk and if he had executed it correctly it probably would have been. That’s just the way Norman has always played and he wasn’t going to change yesterday after having so musch sucess the 1st 3 days.

  25. _Blackhawk_ Says:

#23 you aren’t seriously going to compare football to MMA are you?

That isn’t even an apples to oranges comparison…more like apples to cheesburgers

  26. Bryan the Intern Says:

    23) you need to watch the piece, the focus of it is the fact that these kids are being taught poor technique or no technique, they are taught in ways to hurt the other children, and these things are poorly officiated by adults, to use your football comparison, it would be like a coach teaching his players how to chop block illegaly and grab facemasks, if these kids were being taught properly it would be better, its more of an adult problem than a kid problem

  27. TimPRP Says:

    #25-Explain please?

  28. TimPRP Says:

BTI I was responding to the 2 posts about how terrible it is to teach kids MMA, not teach kids improper ways to teach kids mma.

  29. slappy Says:

Football??? You’re comparing football to MMA? I could write a 50-page thesis on why that’s ridiculous, but I won’t. I’ll just say- Nowhere in football is the point to get your opponent to “submit” or to slam your opponent on their head. Do whatever you want when you’re an adult, but keep your kids out of the cage. Preposterous.

  30. _Blackhawk_ Says:

Explain the similarites and I will dispell them for ya….BTI is correct.

Heck in peewee football kids that are 6 and 7 (even the good ones) don’t always do what they are taught correctly. So even if they are getting proper instruction chances are more likey that they will do something wrong. Then you combine that with the fact that some of these events are not officated well….just not good at that young of an age.

Kids at that young of an age will struggle even when taught proper technique. Certainly I don’t have a problem with parents allowing their kids to be involved with the sport when they get older but at 6,7 and 8…maybe they should start with BJJ…they are going to need that more than striking in most fights anyway. Then when they get to be teens get them into striking or Mauy Thai when they seem to have control of themselves phyiscally and mentally.

  31. TimPRP Says:

MMA is alot safer than football. Most of the time a laceration is the most serious injury you get in MMA. There are football players that can no longer walk. due to playing football. Not counting all the blows a football player takes over the yrs. It’s actually not even close.

  32. _Blackhawk_ Says:

A laceration is the most serious huh? Well I am not sure about you but I certainly don’t want my 6year old having to come home with any of these types of injuries….This is the result of UFC 86 when Rampage and Forrest went at it. Every fighter was put on a minumim susupension due to injury….some weren’t even know the nite of…by the way 10 of the 18 fighters that night were put on the list…and try to remember that we are talking aobut kids taht are 6,7, and 8. over 50% of those participating were suspended for one reason or another…I am pretty sure that is a much higher percetnage than football players in typical games…and too since MMA is only 15 years old or so we don’t yet know the full effects on some fo the high profile guys yet in terms of long term effects.

Quinton Jackson - suspended until Jan. 2 due to possible left knee, tibia, fibia and thumb injuries (can be cleared early by orthopedic doctor); minimum suspension until Aug. 5 with no contact until July 27 for precautionary reasons
Forrest Griffin - suspended until Sept. 4 due to right-upper-eyelid laceration (can be cleared early by doctor)
Chris Lytle - suspended until Sept. 4 due to laceration near right eye (can be cleared early by doctor)
Josh Koscheck - suspended until Aug. 5 with no contact July 27 for precautionary reasons
Marcus Aurelio - suspended until Jan. 2 due to possible left-thumb ligament injury (can be cleared early by orthopedic doctor); minimum suspension until Aug. 5 with no contact until July 27 for precautionary reasons
Justin McCully - suspended until Jan. 2 due to possible left-shoulder injury (can be cleared early by doctor)
Cole Miller - suspended until Sept. 4 due to facial lacerations (can be cleared early by doctor)
Jorge Gurgel - suspended until Jan. 2 due to right tibia, fibia and elbow injuries (can be cleared early by orthopedic doctor)
Dennis Siver - suspended until Aug. 20 with no contact until Aug. 5 for precautionary reasons
Justin Buchholz - suspended until Sept. 4 due to scalp laceration (can be cleared early by doctor)

  33. Hendrix Says:

You sound like Paul Azinger, only he did it like 50 times over the telecast and both of you are wrong. I am in complete agreement with whoever it was that said he had done it for three days and he that is what he felt comfortable with. If Azinger hadn’t kept saying that stuff people might have noticed the 3-4 putts that got halfway down the hole before popping out. Norman crashed yesterday in dramatic fashion but it was simply overshadowed by Padraig’s strong finish down the last stretch and Azinger talking out of his ass about Norman hitting driver too much. The only one who made any sense out of those three jokers was Tom Watson who noted that Norman was hanging back which made sense after Norman said his legs were tired. The guy is 53 years old, doesn’t play golf regularly, and I bet he really doesn’t even care that much. If you think that hitting 3-wood or a hybrid or even a 3-iron would have made any difference, you clearly weren’t watching the same golf I was because it wouldn’t have mattered anyways. He hit bad shots to the green and wouldn’t have kept any of those clubs straighter off the tee the way he was swinging. The only thing that could have saved Norman was an over-par round from Padraig and some help from the golf gods on those three or four putts and we wouldn’t even be discussing it. Trust me, I was pulling for the Shark and I honestly thought that the game that he has done so much for was finally going to pay him back but I guess it is a cruel game after all. Azinger is an idiot when it comes to commentating and I have never been so upset with ABC. And I thought the likes of Johnny Miller and Ken Venturi were bad. Thanks for position good articles by other people though. Very helpful for me in getting the news I want to read.

  34. WildBlue Says:

These parents are genius’; yeah, I’d say these are the same parents that after their 6yo comes home from school after whipping a kid they’ll tell him ‘way to stand up for yourself, they deserved it’. Please, they are not mentally nor physcially ready for that type of sport. Can’t wait to see the first headline in the news for a adolescent whipping the sh*t out of their parents’; if it will make me evil to say ‘they deserved it’ then so be it.

  35. mattcat68 Says:

#23) When a kid gets picked up and slammed on their head, I’d much rather they be wearing a helmet and pads than wearing no protection at all. I think it’s absurd to compare the two sports.

  36. slappy Says:

31- You can get injured playing any sport… My sister tore her ACL twice playing volleyball. Volleyball. And she wasn’t some goofball who sucked- she was all-conference at a high-level D1 school. So severe injuries can and will happen in any sport. The difference is, when an injury in football occurs, almost 100% of the time it’s an accident that occurred while playing the game whose object is to move the ball down the field and score, where in MMA, injuring your opponent is the entire object of the game. There’s nothing else to it. The *intent* of the games couldn’t be more different, and there’s no reason kids should be involved in it at such a young age. It’s 2008, not 2008 BC.

Anyway, I think time will ultimately prove you wrong- MMA hasn’t been around long enough for you to claim that it’s “safer” than football. Wait until some of these fighters are 50 years old and see how they’re doing then.

Besides safety though, at its most basic level, football at the young kids’ level teaches great life lessons about things such as teamwork and how to work with others. What the heck is a kid learning by beating the crap out of another kid or having the crap beat out of him? Like I said before, if they’re old enough to make their own decisions and this is what they want to do, then fine. But there’s absolutely no reason parents should be getting their 6,7,8-year old kids involved in this. Kids get into enough fights on their own without promoting it.

Click #1 Funny how Clay comes around a year late, we knew this stuff long ago. Thank God he may be letting TLT go.

Click #8 The Funny part is the only justification for Obama’s existance is making fun of Bush. Libs are so dumb, first show me a perfect president and second make any logical arguement for Obama, you can’t either one! Yet you still want to play make believe; those are the scary times in which we live.

  38. Philthy Phil Says:

I’d like to advertise but i don’t have any money. That’s why i look at your free site.

  39. 69Z Says:

Hank Haney, Tiger’s coach, came out today and said he couldn’t believe Azinger was questioning Norman going with the driver. Haney stated that is what got Norman to the lead and it would have been a mistake to change. Hmmm. Sound familiar.

  40. MuhlenberCountyCAT Says:

    BTI,

All you did was listen to Paul Azinger and Tom Watson after the round and copied them word for word. You probably didn’t even watch the telecast. You spend all night watching Golf Central and Live from the Open to come up with your thought on WHY Norman lost. Please quit trying to talk golf and stick to proclaiming that soccer sucks.

  41. TimPRP Says:

The suspensions are typical with any fight sport. They are precautions and are done for safety. Like I said there are far more serious injuries that occur playing football than MMA. No one has ever been paralysed or seriously hurt while participating in MMA. It’s easy to sit on the outside and talk about how dangerous MMA is when you turn on the TV and see blood, why dont you do a little research before you pass judgement. By the way, I think 6 and 7 is early to have kids compete (w/striking). I don’t think it’s ever too early to teach them martial arts.

  42. _Blackhawk_ Says:

#41 I love how you tell me to do a little research before I pass judgment…..Seeing as how you don’t even know me.

Like I said before I have been following the sport since the beginning…I guess you have no knowledge of Sam Vasquez, Douglas Dedge huh?

How about you do me a favor and know what you’re talking about before you make such unfounded statements of injuries when MMA has had deaths…as recent as 2007…in sanctioned and supervised events.

Tim Sylia who got beat in just 36 seconds over the weekend once destroyed a dude named Tra Telligman who laid in the ring for over 10 minutes motionless and had to be carried off on a strecher and hasn’t fought since.

Not to mention Matt Serra who lost the belt a few months ago to GSP he has a deformity in his right bicep due to an injury that he suffered while fighting in the ring….not to mention a herniated disc that he received while teaching students.

Yeah just a few scratches that is all you see in MMA…a little cut here or there.

Big difference in going out and trying to get a ball across a white line where accidents occur vs. trying to knock your opponent out or make him quit, while kicking, punching, kneeing and throwing elbows.

6 and 7? Is that the age that where they should start out competing and doing this type of stuff? I don’t think so.
