1. In what has been a fairly average year in UK athletics (1st round NCAA loss, football goes 8-5, baseball loses in regionals), we now get to celebrate a national championship. No, not in cheerleading again, but discus thrower (if thats what you call them) Rashaud Scott took home the title in Des Moines Friday. It’s UK’s first national champion in track and field in 12 years and the first to win an outdoor event in UK history.
2. I am man enough to admit when I was wrong, and I was wrong about the Kentucky boys All-Star team this year. I predicted 2 double digit losses. Instead, they split with the Indiana boys, losing by 1 in Indy and winning by 17 (box score included) in Louisville. I think as it turned out, the Kentucky team had less Division 1 talent, but the D-1 talent they did have (Miller, Hopson, Mack) were alot better than the Indiana counterparts. Nonetheless, good to see the Kentucky boys at least competitive in this series. Also, the KY girls crushed the IN girls twice.
3. You may remember the story after the NFL Draft about the Army grad who will be let out of his service so he can play in the NFL, and the uproar it caused. Clearly that was an Army-only rule, because the Navy is not letting a guy out of his commitment after being drafted in the MLB Draft last week. My thought: I’m OK with this, nobody forced this kid to join the Navy in the first place, so the Navy has the right to make him uphold his commitment, especially in a time of war. But, I also support the Army’s stance that having a grad starring or potentially starring in the NFL would be a good PR move. The problem with this new story is the guy has started whining about his career being destroyed and blah blah blah. I once again say: you made the choice to enlist, suck it up. On second thought, not real sure if this guy is super-committed to defending the country, so let him go.
4. Answer this riddle of sorts: Is Tiger Woods vulnerable because he is driving the ball all over the course and is playing on one leg. Or is he unbeatable because he has found a way to get into a playoff despite driving the ball all over the course and playing on one leg. Win or lose today (and loss is a definate possibility), his performance this week has been one of his best. And whatver happened to good ole’ 36-hole playoffs like they did in the 1940’s. Let’s imagine Tiger needing to play 36 on one leg after struggling through 18 for 4 days.
5. Remember Marcus Vick? He’s the guy that learned from his brother not to fight dogs. He also the guy who made good with some UK fans (not me) when he stomped on the knee of UL All-American Elvis Dumervil in the Gator Bowl a couple years back. Yeah, well if that little incident and the fact that he is from the Vick family didn’t clue you in, this guy is an idiot. Probably a bigger dummie than his brother. Turns out little Marcus thought he could get drunk, drive, and then try and flee a bicycle cop. Clearly he was too dumb to realize that bicycle cops can always call the boys in the cars.
6. A list of some unbreakable modern baseball records. Is the 56-game hitting streak still the greatest baseball record? I think you will come to find that with steroids hopefully dying out in baseball, 73 home runs in a season will become more unbreakable. Consider that no one NOT on steroids has come within 13 of that record. Of course, no one has come within 14 of Dimaggio’s record so I might just be making another stupid argument like I tend to do. I just think that someday we will get a guy with blazing speed that can bunt his way on at least once a game and luckily get past 56 games.

Tiger will win today for sure, and Kentucky D-1 prospects are alot better then IU’s they just had a bad game the first time.

GO CATS!!!!!!!!!

1…..iu’s? you must just mean the state of Indiana’s.
I will say that Indiana High School basketball overall is couple levels above KY’s, as far as quality of basketball.

“He also the guy who made good with some UK fans (not me) when he stomped on the knee of UL All-American Elvis Dumervil in the Gator Bowl a couple years back.”
Before I write what I want to say, I’ll say this: I like 99.9% of the content of this site and am UK fan only. I do not like UL athletics. However, a player never “makes good” with me when tries to hurt or humiliate another player. Christian Laettner stomping Aminu Timberlake comes to mind. I’d be pissed if someone praised butt-munch Laettner for what he did.

I know it’s a change in subject, but why does jeff van gundy hate rondo?
June 16th, 2008 at 10:22 am
How bout some Dale Jr. love on here?
You gotta love him taking a huge risk on fuel, odds stacked against him (that caution with 3 to go, almost did him in) and breaking the losing streak on Father’s Day.
You can’t write it any better!
Jr. Nation Baby!
June 16th, 2008 at 10:25 am
He’s not being “let out of his service so he can play in the NFL.” Instead, that is his service.
June 16th, 2008 at 10:31 am
7) splitting hairs there, i dont think playing in the nfl is a “service”
June 16th, 2008 at 10:34 am
Tiger is a baby! It was not until the last day, when he was leading, and then all the sudden we stop hearing his moaning and complaining. If he is going to play on a hurt leg, then he needs to play rather than moan and groan the whole time.
June 16th, 2008 at 10:36 am
Gilchrist to USF… or is this old news?
June 16th, 2008 at 10:49 am
9) I agree 100%; I listened to music while I was watching the final round yesterday b/c I could not take the commentators anymore. Tiger had his knee SCOPED two months ago, it is not like he had metal rods inserted into his knee or tore ligaments. And I am surprised that no one noticed how the pain only showed up when he hit a shot he was not happy with; but then he would jump around and fall to his knees when he missed a putt. I know he is the greatest golfer of all-time, but I hate his smarmy attitude and the way the commentators kiss his a** constantly–you would thing the guy split the atom. I hate Tiger, and I hope ol’ Rocco puts it on him today.
June 16th, 2008 at 10:49 am
Rich Jerk– You must have missed Saturday’s round. He limped around the last half of the round and did not have the lead until the final hole. He had to hit a long eagle putt to take the lead and EARNED it. Sounds like the whining is coming from you.
June 16th, 2008 at 11:02 am
7 thats total BS that the NFL is his service. He took an oath just like everyone else in the military. He went to school for free, got a place to live and was given food all for free, its not like the hid the fact that he was going to have to serve in the army as an officer, he knew that up front. I mean come on, think about every single person who is serving over seas, anyone who gets there leg blown off, don’t you think that they might think, “this is going to hurt my career”. But are they being let out of the military just for that, no. I joined the navy, I hated just about every second of it, but I did it because I love this country and I said that I would and a I stood next to my word. And I know for a fact that the football guys at westpoint are given a much easier time than any of the other normal students. I have a friend who went there from Trinty. If the army wants a great PR story they should look for guys like pat tilman who was willing to defend and give his life for the country, not worry about his career, or maybe all the men and women who actually put there lives on the line, that might be a good PR story over this guy!
June 16th, 2008 at 11:06 am
And yes I know that westpoint has a policy that allows it, but I still think its a joke!
June 16th, 2008 at 11:23 am
12 - my point exactly. He limped and moaned all day on Saturday and Friday for that matter, but here comes Sunday, the day when you would think his knee would hurt the worst and I saw little to no limping (except on a bad shot).
June 16th, 2008 at 11:26 am
I forgot though….Tiger is better than the game and the tour should pay him to play, so we should all sit back, stroke his ego and give ever excuse in the book why he blew a 2 stroke lead, the final day of the US Open to a 45 year old man. But I forgot “HE EARNED” it. But I guess Mediate did not EARN IT?
June 16th, 2008 at 11:28 am
Tiger hater alert!! Tiger hater alert!!
June 16th, 2008 at 11:32 am
Dumb ass must run in the Vick family…..
I don’t think we know what type of procedure Tiger had done. Yes, he had a scope, but was it just to “clean stuff up”, or to actually repair the meniscus. If it was to just clean out some junk, then, yes, he’s being overly dramatic. Guys in the NFL have this procedure performed on a Monday and return to the field the following Sunday. If he had cartilage repair, which, the non-weight bearing time frame would indicated, then it’s a whole different story.
June 16th, 2008 at 11:32 am
17 - actual I enjoy Tiger and think he is great for the game and is an unbelievable golfer (and probably the best I will ever see). My comments are towards the remarks made by the commentators, BTI and other spectators, who thought his knee is such a big issue. And Tiger is making it more of an issue than it needs to be.
June 16th, 2008 at 11:35 am
Puh-leeeesssee—-This is his first tourney out after the procedure. I played at a “high” level before having to give up the game. I moved to AZ to play and work on my game. I have Crohn’s Disease and was forced to have a section of my colon taken out. I was down for 5 months and once I returned, became very frustrated that my body was not able to do things that I once was able to do. Take that to the highest level, under the most pressure and there is going to be some frustration when things don’t go like you expect. Also, Torrey Pines (which I have played a few times) is not an easy course to walk. It is up and down hills with elevated tees. It will take a toll on the healthiest of legs. The first time I played it, I fell apart the last 5 holes from fatigue.
As for Rocco, he is definitely in my top 5 players. What is not to like about the guy. I was pulling for him yesterday but I am not going to bash Tigger for struggling through the situation. Tigger, complains on any shot he hits wrong because he expects “more” out of himself. It is only natural that he would be seemingly more upset when things are not “just right” and on the biggest stage.
June 16th, 2008 at 11:35 am
19 Okay Dr. Jerk, I’m glad you’re up to date on the status of Tiger’s knee. He admitted to taking pain killers after the round but of course you know they had no effect since you stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night.
I for one am very glad that I chose to like Tiger early in his career, because it has given me 10 years of being very happy on Sunday afternoons when he collects his trophies.
June 16th, 2008 at 11:40 am
19) he had to put extreme pressure on his knee 72+ times a round not long after knee surgery, so yeah i give tiger the benefit of the doubt that his knee really hurts, he almost crumpled over on one tee box because of the pain, and if a shooting pain came through your knee while swinging a golf club i’m sure you would hit it poorly too, so maybe thats why the two things happen together
June 16th, 2008 at 11:45 am
One last thing here, Jerky Boy–Tiger made no excuses on Saturday. If you listened to his interview, he said he was definitely in pain but as it related to his play he offered up something to the effect of this: “It hurt but the pain was after the contact had been made and had no effect during the swing. The ball was long gone before it hit me.”
I am done with you.
Hater in the house!!!!
June 16th, 2008 at 11:48 am
If his knee is hurting so bad, then why come back? Pain killers??? You got to be kidding me. A lot of my golfing buddies (and myself included) take pain killers after every round of golf too (hip, back, wrist, elbow pain).
June 16th, 2008 at 11:48 am
err, can anyone explain the offer for a lil bro ringtone on the right side of the page, featuring pictures of brohm and t-won’t?

Average year in UK athletics? Baseball and basketball, well, yeah, but 8-5 for the football team is pretty damn good. Or do we not remember 1984-2005?
June 16th, 2008 at 12:45 pm
20. You are exactly right. Whether his injury is really that severe or not doesn’t negate the fact that he has to walk 18 holes everyday, and everytime he takes a swing at the ball he is putting major pressure on that knee. You can see in his play that the injury is bothering him, if he was 100% there’s no way Mediate would’ve even made it to the playoff.
June 16th, 2008 at 12:55 pm
24.) I am having a hard time figuring out your argument, but whatever it is, its not a good one.
Either
A.) Tiger is hurt and playing through pain, and still in a playoff to win the U.S. Open. or
B.) He is not hurt playing like crap and still in a playoff to win the U.S. Open.
Either way he is the best golfer in the world, and probably the only athlete in any sport that can hold the “best in sport” title that can not be disputed.
June 16th, 2008 at 1:03 pm
The most “unbreakable” baseball record is Ripken’s Iron Man record. There is nobody in ANY sport that has currently played in more than 100-200 consecutive games.
BTW, Tiger is the best golfer to ever play the sport. To argue otherwise would be an exercise in futility.

#13…I commend you for honoring your military commitment. Did you come out a better person, more mature for your service? My son along with 4 of his buddies, signed up early as juniors in high school…this was before the first war in the Persian Gulf. He left Ky for his training in San Diego a month before he turned 18. He was so homesick and when he got back from training wanted me to get him out of his commitment and I refused. He did not especially like me for a while after that, but he will tell anyone today that his time in the Navy made him a better person and he matured beyond his years.
I don’t agree with athletes serving at any military academy being exempted from their commitments so they can go to the pros.
I dislike our war situation as much as anyone in this country, and the depleted situation our military is in at the present time, I honestly believe we need the draft once again as we had with the Vietnam War.
June 16th, 2008 at 1:46 pm
#13, thanks for serving our country in that fashion. I know that not all military service is done in combat zones, however, I don’t think that fact lessens the importance of those roles. Why should it in this situation?
June 16th, 2008 at 1:49 pm
Wasn’t Pete Rose’s 44-game hitting streak within 14 of Dimaggio’s record? (56-44=12)
June 16th, 2008 at 1:57 pm
Where does it say that i have to like Tiger just because he is the best player in golf? He is an ahole and i can’t stand him; that is my opinion, & if you don’t share it then that is your opinion. And regarding Intern’s comment #22, i think about 20-25 of those strokes a day were putts, which put no pressure on his knee whatsoever. You all can drink the Tiger kool aid if you want, but i would rather drink a big glass of Jim Jones’ flavor aid than root for Tiger.
June 16th, 2008 at 3:06 pm
36.) Its actually Tiger Gatoraide, and I believe you dear sir should get off your HATER-aide.
June 16th, 2008 at 4:07 pm
37) i wouldn’t patronize anything he pushes on the consumer first of all, & second it was just an expression for people like you who like him b/c everyone else does. I already said i hate him & i will continue to root against him until he retires, so piss off.
June 16th, 2008 at 4:14 pm
wow…the US Open has gone to sudden death after another 18 holes…great golf!
June 16th, 2008 at 4:17 pm
I commend both of these players…so exciting!
June 16th, 2008 at 4:38 pm
31 - got your point….you like Tiger!
Nice win by Tiger. I was glad Mediate was in it, and even took it to sudden death….he brings out the best in people and golf. All and all, awesome US Open!
June 16th, 2008 at 5:35 pm
41…his comments after his win said why he would not quit even though it was obvious he was hurting the last few days. He said for the fans there, but I have to think he kept pushing for his Dad who he lost a few years ago. He was his greatest mentor in the the game of golf. It was Father’s Day weekend. Anyway a great finish to a US OPEN!
June 16th, 2008 at 5:37 pm
And he will be taking a long rest after this win.
June 16th, 2008 at 6:01 pm
Before I go on a tirade about why the Army did nothing wrong, I will admit that I am a 1st Lieutenant in the Army and am on an educational delay to be in law school. Currently, I don’t have to do anything (which is less than what that West Point grad has to do) but after I pass the bar, I still owe the Army at least four years.
First of all neither the Army Lieutenant nor the Navy Ensign enlisted, they are commissioned officers. Second the MLB draft and the NHL draft are much different than the NFL or NBA. Unlike top draft picks in the NBA and NFL, all of whom are expected to make immediate impacts, top MLB draftees are nearly always assigned to the minor leagues for several years to hone their skills. Additionally, the vast majority of players selected will never play in a single MLB game, including many first-rounders. As an example, 29 of 52 first-round draft picks in the 1997 draft eventually made a big-league appearance. Only five of the 30 players selected in the 6th round of the 1997 draft ever did so. This Navy pitcher was selected in the 13th! He will probably never see the MLB and if he does, it won’t be for several years. While the Army Lieutenant was drafted in the 7th round, he has a much better shot at playing and even if he doesn’t he still is serving. Albeit in a different capacity.
Either way, both of these guys will end up fulfilling their commitments in one way or another and I believe it is completely justifiable to allow the NFL soldier more leeway than the MLB one.
June 16th, 2008 at 9:07 pm
Tiger Woods is absolutely amazing. He can beat you with Raw Talent and blow you away. Or he can outlast you and beat you on the last hole with a putt time after time. He can beat you anyway he wants to. If these guys can’t beat him with a bum knee they are finished when he becomes healthy again. I love what he is doing right now. He has made golf the game to play for young kids. He has also boosted the amount of money all the guys on tour are able to make. If you don’t love Tiger I feel sorry for you because you are going to have to watch him succeed in majors many more times. The most unbelievable things about him is his consistency. Even win he loses he’s in contention to win.
Bryan,
Tiger did not hit the ball everywhere off the tee. In the final round he hit 9/14 fairways and he hit 55.7 percent of the fairways for the tournament. As far as he hits it(2nd in driving distance) thats pretty good. The faster a players club head speed the harder it is to hit the ball straight consistently. If the club is one degree open or closed at 125 mph the ball is going to go further off line that if the club head is one to two degrees open at 100 mph.
June 16th, 2008 at 10:26 pm
44) In the same regard though.. Mike Piazza was like a 56th round choice or something. Point is.. baseball draft is a crap shoot… it seems that just as many kids drafted in the 50th round make it as those drafted in the 3rd round.
Also about the baseball streaks article… you cannot enter a 6,000 - 0 game and get a save. It has to be a 3 run or less lead… OR a 4 run lead with a runner on, 5 run lead with 2 runners on.. etc.
June 16th, 2008 at 10:31 pm
Wait actually… without looking up the rule… I think its 3 run lead OR 4 run lead with one runner on… I think I was wrong about the 5 run lead with two on.
