Ok, let’s get this out of the way first. Yes, he’s his son. That Shawn Kemp is his dad. Alright, now that we got that out of the way, we can continue moving down the list…
The good news is that precious list has brought us to Shawn Kemp, Jr., a lanky, athletic 6′9″, 215 pound center from Canton, Ga whose development over the past two years has shot him up toward the top of the 2009 rankings. Kemp, a five-star player, is ranked by Rivals as the 4th best center in the class and as 25th best player overall. Kemp is still regarded as a bit of a project by most recruiting analysts, but he’s been given that “upside” label that makes coaches and fans salivate, partially because he’s said to have the growth potential (?) to be 7′2″. This status as a raw, still undeveloped player has him ranked by Scouts.com as a three-star player and the 21st-best center in the class.
Last year as junior at Cherokee HS, his first full-year, Kemp averaged 12 points and 8 rebounds. Those relatively pedestrian stats, though, are not what have coaches after the young man. He gets up and down the floor with speed and jumps very well, giving him the ability to finish above the rim and block shots. As he continues to develop his fundamental skills (word is that he’s developed a lethal, soft touch on his hook shots), his stock should continue to rise. Kemp has said that he has an offer from UK but, according to Rivals, he’s only been offered by Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Marquette and Ole Miss, although he’s being recruited by a slew of teams. Outside of Kentucky, the most prestigious are Tennessee and Florida and the rest are more of your mid-level programs.

1) and your dead roomates girlfriends credit cards…..
June 12th, 2008 at 4:16 pm
Where’s the gold chain? I figured if anyone would have one on it would be Mr. Kemp’s offspring.
If he comes here, make sure he knows where Rosenberg’s is located.
June 12th, 2008 at 4:17 pm
IS THIS 1 OF 32 OF SHAWN KEMPS CHILDREN?
June 12th, 2008 at 4:27 pm
florida and tennessee and prestigious in the same sentence. drink another one t.j.
June 12th, 2008 at 4:27 pm
Wow guys, this is a potential recruit. He has done nothing to any of you and has very little contact with his father. Not sure why all the spite, but if I were him and read this there is no way I would come here. Putting myself in his shoes if I read something like this at 17 years old I would not want to come there.
UK fans are the best and the worst. 1-6 is a prime example of the latter.
Burn
June 12th, 2008 at 4:29 pm
By the way, if you wouldn’t say $hit in front of him (or his father)-don’t post it. If you would say something like this to a 17 year old you are even more sad than I estimated.
June 12th, 2008 at 4:29 pm
This Shawn Kemp?
http://chillablehours.com/2008/06/10/whos-your-daddy/
At least he gets tons of Father’s Day presents.
June 12th, 2008 at 4:33 pm
well I seen him play, and he is the real deal, can jump out
the gym and has a nice jumper.
June 12th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
I like what I see..he takes it strong to the rack, and has a nice touch on that baby hook..he has the tools, and could really develop into a stud with the right coaching staff.
June 12th, 2008 at 4:39 pm
Who has more kids….Kemp or George Foreman? Seriously.

ESPN reports Speights is staying in the NBA draft.
June 12th, 2008 at 4:42 pm
Don’t worry guys, if we miss out on him, we got like 12 more chances at snagging a Kemp offspring.
June 12th, 2008 at 4:47 pm
speights just isnt ready to go, he should come back for one more year.
But if he can make first round money more power to him.
June 12th, 2008 at 4:51 pm
8. I WOULD ASK HOW MANY BROTHERS AND SISTERS HE HAS
June 12th, 2008 at 4:54 pm
can someone please explain to me what “finishing above the rim” means? I have NEVER understood that. might as well be “gets the benefit of the whistle on dunk attempts”
June 12th, 2008 at 4:57 pm
You all should be ashamed of yourselves for
making snide remarks about a kid.
He cannot help who his dad is.
And if I remember correctly Shawn Kemp had a
pretty decent NBA career.
It is dumbasses like you all who will run off a recruit.
I hope your pubic hair becomes infested with the fleas
of 1000 of Lindsay Lohan’s friends.
June 12th, 2008 at 5:01 pm
I agree with 8. I’d stay as far away from UK as possible. Better yet I’d go to UT or UF and and smile at the UK fans on every dunk and block shot…Don’t get me wrong I love UK but some of these negative comments about KIDS are ridiculous and make the lot of us look very..well..backwoods
June 12th, 2008 at 5:05 pm
people are just trying to be funny and they’re not. nothing original has been said.
let wallowing idiots wallow.
June 12th, 2008 at 5:08 pm
Kinda looks like Perry Stevenson plus about 10-15 pounds. Looks good to me
June 12th, 2008 at 5:13 pm
hasn’t officially been offered by UK at this point, but may if other options fall through going into the winter. He’ll probably be a spring signee.
June 12th, 2008 at 5:13 pm
Kemp was phenomenal in high school. His son looks like a solid player.
It is conceivable we could eventually see an entire NBA squad of Kemp’s sons, right? How cool would that be? Or maybe an offshoot of the Harlem Globetrotters made up of Kemps.
June 12th, 2008 at 5:13 pm
Are we also recruiting Shawn Kemp XXXVI?
June 12th, 2008 at 5:18 pm
Its so interesting to me to see all of these kids we’re going after and us not having that many offers left. I know we need to cast a wide net, but isn’t most of the 09 class wrapped up already?
June 12th, 2008 at 5:20 pm
And if he does come to UK, lets hope he only gets to 6′11, I can remember not to long ago that we had 21ft of players that where not worth a crap. So 7 footers haven’t been working lately. I loved Woo, but lets be real.
June 12th, 2008 at 5:21 pm
Wait a second…
Comment #1 was made by a Florida fan (gators4life) who trolls this Kentucky blog. Comment #6 was made by the same guy. He comes here and tries to ruffle feathers and today is just like any other.
The problem I see with the posts is people not paying attention to whos making them. Kentucky fans would love to see a talented kid play basketball at the most history rich program. He will have to be his own man since his dad made some mistakes, but I see him being treated no differently by true Kentucky fans than any other kid. Kentucky fans “actually” care as a whole more about the kids and their futures than any group I’ve seen throughout the years.
SP93.9 are you just blind? Your statement, “UK fans are the best and the worst. 1-6 is a prime example of the latter.” Where in his name “gators4life” do you see Ky fan?
Then #20 ottaLoveThoseCats bandwagons your agenda and even suggests the kid should go to Florida to get those “Backwoods” Kentucky fans back. Again, do you have a pulse? Where in his name “gators4life” do you see Ky fan?
Hopefully the kid is more intelligent and pays better attention to detail than you so that he can make decisions based on something other than impulsive ignorance.
June 12th, 2008 at 5:26 pm
How should Shawn Kemp’s son be a project? Didn’t they play ball in the backyard? Don’t answer that…
June 12th, 2008 at 5:28 pm
I’m not saying he is a bad kid or anything along those lines, but it always grabs my attention when a person wears huge earrings in a sports picture. I know lots of people do it but I still think it looks silly.
June 12th, 2008 at 5:31 pm
Tennessee is NOT A PRESTIGIOUS school. They have NEVER been to a elite 8. Never. I hate it when people say they have tradition there because I completely disagree.
June 12th, 2008 at 5:43 pm
16….what are you talking about? “finishing above the rim well” has nothing to do with whistles or fouls. It mean they get up and cram the ball every time they get a chance…and it goes in..aka finishing.
June 12th, 2008 at 6:16 pm
Tn prestigious? Puh-leez! At least Marquette has a NC, Ga a FF.
June 12th, 2008 at 6:33 pm
Hey hey don’t go knocking on TN, they are very prestigious, they have won tons of titles, have the most winning coach ever and happen to be one of two schools in the country that the womens basketball tickest cost more than the mens. So yea I’d call them prestigious, in womens basketball. I bet thats what they meant, I mean who else could they be talking about? lol See we cleared all that mess up didn’t we.
June 12th, 2008 at 8:35 pm
(30) so he doesn’t miss dunks? wow. impressive.
June 12th, 2008 at 8:57 pm
hey 26. please quote were the florida fan down downgraded Kemp. I cant seem to find his negative point of view. I mean I see it from others just not him. Please help I’m in dire need. As far as bandwagons go well that gives me a much needed chuckle. And yes if I were a potential recruit and read some of these comments I’d walk away and hopefully scoff at the fans when I got my chance.
June 12th, 2008 at 9:19 pm
by the way the Florida fan was the 9th and 14th to post and yet again i ask you where is his negativity. Oh and I was poster 18 not 20 from where I’m setting. And you want to talk about “impulsive ignorance” when you have trouble reading numbers. But I’m sure you will prove me wrong
June 12th, 2008 at 10:27 pm
Everybody. This is a blog. If some poster wants to make a joke about a potential recruit then so be it. This is a free country right. This blog is definitely free. Anybody can say anything they like. If you don’t like what someone says state you opinion and go on.
BTW, IMO if Kemp really is on here reading everyones comment and uses these comments to base his college decision, then I hope he goes somewhere else. GEEZ that would be the most pathetic thing I would hope to never witness or hear about in the media. Players come to UK because they want to play at the highest level and have the most abundant resources provided to them. They don’t come to UK because we have cool blogs that praise them. GIVE ME A BREAK.
Also do you think if Florida had a blod then Gaytors4life would be here. Trust me he wouldn’t. If they did have a blog I am sure Gator fans would be saying the same things.
June 12th, 2008 at 10:33 pm
#24 Casting such a wide net like we are is going to do several different things for our program.
One- We will have tons of connections with tons of kids. Like Orton, hey they recruited my brother.
TWO- Kids are going to have to commit early or they won’t have a spot. Like Possibly Kemp. If Watford or Wall and Orton commit he is out of the picture. SORRY!!!
THREE- It gets our name out among the kids. Fresh in their minds
Four- It also sends the message that if you can play we will find you. SO HOLD TIGHT>
June 12th, 2008 at 10:34 pm
Five- We will have consistent recruiting classes year in and year out. Not one good one in ‘04 and then nothing in ‘05. It will be every year.
June 12th, 2008 at 10:51 pm
One things for sure. Shawn Kemp JR. is going to be a stud somewhere. If we do have some scholarhsips open up I would love to have him on our team. The future is just so bright right now. We are in on all the top talents and we getting the talents like Pilgrim that needed a new home. Somewhere their talents can shine and giving them a place to call home. I can’t wait for the season to start. Even if we aren’t spectacular this year we know it is coming in the recent future. The reason some people were probably so hard on Tubby is because we saw nothing to get excited for in the future. Now we have something to be excited for again. It is going to be a great time to be a wildcat fan. I think next year we will sneak up on some people.
June 12th, 2008 at 11:13 pm
36 - 39) If you’re like me I can’t wait to see what the future holds. You’re right it is only a blog. But with so much negative press we as Kentucky fans are getting lately you never know when a negative comment is being read and digested by a young kid. I agree it would be silly to base your pick, as a prospect, on what a blogger is saying. But with what the press is saying of the fan base and the pressure they say we put on coaches and players might, and I do say might, play a factor in their decision. HELL YEAH CELTICS WITHIN 2!! with 11:38 remaining..oops
June 13th, 2008 at 8:40 am
I was gonna say, “Aren’t there like 8 Shawn Kemp Jr.s,” but it looks like that one has been sufficiently covered here.
June 13th, 2008 at 9:38 am
39.. Did you say “the recent future”?
