No its not his birthday. But since 32 NFL teams showed no respect to our man Andre Woodson today, we will. The fall down the draft board by Woodson is one of the most amazing things I have seen in sports recently. Here was a guy that after the LSU game was spoken of as the favorite for the Heisman and a potential Top 5 pick. And then, after the season, thanks to a bad performance in the Senior Bowl, he drops down to the 6th Round where he was picked by the Giants. Picked before him included such players as Erik Ainge, two quarterbacks from San Diego and Colt “Freakin” Brennan. It is totally and completely baffling on every level. This had to be a very tough day for Andre, but here is hoping that he uses this for the better and makes something positive happen from the process. I hate that he was picked by the Giants, as he now likely will send our man Jared Lorenzen packing, especially due to the signing of David Carr. We will have to see how all this plays out, but I am confident of one thing…..people will be sorry they forgot about Dre’….
Three other Cats got drafted today, matching the highest UK total since 1989. They were:
Jacob Tamme: Went in the Fourth Round to the Indianapolis Colts, where he will immediately fit in the Dallas Clark role with the offense. Manning loves his tight ends and Tamme projects to have a bright future on the turf up there catching passes. The Colts also picked a TE in the 6th round, so Tamme might have to expect some competition. But still, a great situation for the kid from Boyle County.
Keenan Burton: Went with the very next pick to the St Louis Rams. The history of great receivers with the Rams is well known, but this isnt the “Greatest Show on Turf” any more. They still throw the ball a decent amount, but they have some room for a receiver to come and make a splash. They took another receiver in the 2nd Round, so it was obviously a need and Burton can find his place on the roster.
Stevie Johnson: The text messages flew between my friends as “Stevie Got LOOOOSE” to Buffalo in the 7th Round. The Bills seem to go through WRs like candy up there and I am not sure if they have had a guy who I remember being great since Andre Reed. Stevie will be on the border of making the team, but as we all know, when Stevie gets loose, anything can happen.
Late word tonight is that Eric Scott signed a free agent deal with the Titans and Wesley Woodyard may have signed with the Broncos (although that is not official). Either way, Woodson disappointment aside, a great day for the UK football program in the draft.
A few more notes of the basketball recruiting variety…..
Ater Majok: Jerry Tipton has a story today that Majok could make a decision any day between UCONN, Baylor and UK. The theme of the story is that Ater loves UCONN, but that may just be because it was the last school that he saw. Thabeet’s return would seem to limit immediate playing time for the big man, but as always, I wonder how much that really fits in with a kid’s call any way. Some folks I talk to are quietly confident about this pick….I still think UCONN is the likely choice, but we shall see.
Nicola Kecman: Reports came that he committed to Ohio State this weekend. In Tipton’s article, he quotes the coach as saying a decision has not yet been made and that Kecman is visiting Ole Miss Coach Andy Kennedy on Monday. So dont count out Serbia just yet.
Roderick Flemings: Committed this weekend to Hawaii. Lots of debate online about whether he was offered or not and whether he picked UH over UK or not. Ultimately this question is meaningless. Flemings is a great player. He has work to do to get qualified….when Kentucky was in this week, I was told there was a greater than 50 percent chance he would get qualified, but it was still close. Gillispie visited him on Wednesday, but Flemings committed on Friday. As to whether he had an offer….no one knows for sure. Kids sometimes claim offers when they dont have them….coaches sometime claim to have not given offers when a school spurns them. And the only folks confident as to whether an offer exists or not often seem to be fans. Two stories show how hard understanding “offers” can be. When Kris Humphries picked Minnesota over Duke, Coach K (who back then never gave an “offer” unless he was sure of an acceptance) claimed no offer was made…fooling no one. And then of course Adam Williams had an “offer” from Tubby that he accepted, that may have not ever been an offer to begin with. You just never know. In the end though, Flemings wont be a Cat and that is all we will remember.
Josh Harrellson: Visited St Louis this week and down to the Billikens and Kentucky. I am told a decision is likely by Tuesday and by the weekend at the latest. Its hometown school versus the big program in Kentucky. And dont forget that Majerus can sell Harrellson on the similar players he has sent to the NBA (Van Horn, Mottola, Doleac), so this may be closer than we wish. I am high on this kid though….the Cats could use him a great deal.
Paul McCoy: Another kid I am very high on. Down to Kentucky and Virginia. Some say that McCoy doesnt have an offer. His coach told me last week that he did, but again who knows? I like McCoy a lot and think the Cats could really use him next year.
Bobby Maze: We will have more on this guy next week. May visit UK very soon….one to watch for.
So it is a big week on the recruiting front. Two or three big Cat targets will make their call in the next couple of days…..Hang on tight….

April 28th, 2008 at 12:12 am
nevermind, i just looked him up. looks like a pure point guard, no shot though, atleast a 3 point shot. maybe another rondo, i’ll take that anyday.

I enjoy the recruiting trail as much as any of you but this crap gets so old. It’s hard to watch kids pick small schools over UK but my theory is, if they don’t want to be here then so be it. BCG still has a good group of players for 2008-2009 even if we get nobody else this year!!!! I think D-Jas and Mike Williams are gone so with that being taken into consideration, here is what we have for a possible starting 5 WITHOUT Jasper:
PG: Kevin Galloway
SG: Jodie Meeks
SF: Darius Miller
PF: Perry Stevenson
C: Patrick Patterson
This starting 5 blows our most recent starting 5 away considering the fact that all 5 starters can score on command!!!!!! Our reserves would be:
G: DeAndre Liggins, Mike Porter
F: Ramon Harris, AJ Stewart, Mark Coury
C: Jared Carter
With this being said, I think we could use a couple extra bigger guys and there are still TONS of these guys flying under the radar in JUCO land. UK won’t compete for a Final Four in 08-09 but look out in 2009-2010!!!
April 28th, 2008 at 12:25 am
I forgot to name:
G/F: Landon Slone
April 28th, 2008 at 12:34 am
“Manning loves his tight ends.”
I’d heard rumors about him and Kenny Chesney.
April 28th, 2008 at 12:39 am
I too would like to know more about Maze. If anybody has a link I would greatly appreciate it. I am getting worried about these kids that dont want to come to UK. I hope there is not some unknown reason behind it. I could just be a worry wort or just panicing and I hope that is all that it is. I love my cats and hope we can start to get things turned around next season, but with Jasper leaving and kids not commiting I am getting scared. GO CATS and go gettem BCG.
April 28th, 2008 at 1:29 am
Love the Dr. Dre/Eminem reference.
April 28th, 2008 at 1:57 am
WTF
April 28th, 2008 at 2:01 am
Okay, let’s try this again. Maze visited St. Johns this weekend. He had originaly committed to OK and then transferred out to a Comm. College. He then committed earlier this year to a Maryland and the two have come to a mutual agreement to go their seperate ways. The speculation is that it is due to credits/classes and that he needs two more classes to qualify. Has anyone heard this song and dance before????? I will try to get a “link” in a few since I know how a few of you are out there.
April 28th, 2008 at 2:04 am
Sorry boys and girls, it will not allow me to attach it. You can go to Zagsblog or better yet, google Aaron’s UK Basketball Blog for details.
Peace
April 28th, 2008 at 4:29 am
hate to say this, but it would almost be better for andre to just get cut by the giants, leave lornezen there as he will never be a legitimate NFL starter and hope Andre catches on with a better suited team, if they dump J-Lo and keep Andre, then we probably dont here from either of them for the next 2 or 3 years
April 28th, 2008 at 7:29 am
Here is a really good article on Woodson….enjoy.

Isn’t it strange that the first positive feel good story that Tipton writes in months is about Hopson going to Tennessee?

17, I want to know why I feel so dirty after reading that title. I feel like I need to go wash off.
April 28th, 2008 at 7:45 am
#18 seriously weird title. Should Tipton be writing for Playboy’s sports section?

Nowadays everybody wanna talk like they got somethin to say
but nothin comes out when they move their lips;

And mother******* act like they forgot about Dre

We’re still feeling the aftershocks of the Tubby Smith Era. This sucks. I’m so sick of getting recruiting classes like this. Chasing after scrubs and getting turned down by decent players.
April 28th, 2008 at 8:08 am
21) thats right, its all tubby’s fault, please explain, you know what, on second thought dont, because i think everyone is sick of hearing that excuse, no one is at fault, NOBODY!!!!, is it beyond belief kids might want to go to other schools than UK, is it sooooo crazy?, if this season taught us anything its coach gillispie can coach whoever he’s got, with all the injuries and a somewhat less talented team than the past its AMAZING this team made the tournament, and if you expect him to stockpile 5-star kids, I don’t think its gonna happen, he didn’t do it at Texas A&M
April 28th, 2008 at 8:08 am
Woodson was the 11th QB taken in the draft. Just freakin’ mind boggling. He’s the 5th QB on the Giants depth chart behind Manning, J-Lo, Carr and Wright. Could be tough to make the team. Wish he’d never played that Senior Bowl.
April 28th, 2008 at 8:11 am
21) and 22) I hate to admit it but I honestly believe the biggest problem these recruits have with UK are the fans and our extreme expectations. I do not want to change anything except trying to stay positive but we should get the kind of kids that want to play under that kind of scrutiny and high expectations(ie. Patterson)
April 28th, 2008 at 8:24 am
bigshaun shows his ignorance w/ every post…
April 28th, 2008 at 8:26 am
BTI is it okay for writers of blogs to engage in nerd fights????
April 28th, 2008 at 8:27 am
Bryan ignore him that all he ever want to do, bash Tubby & our players. He is no fan, just must be a UL or TN fan trying to make us look bad.
April 28th, 2008 at 8:31 am
26) i am not real sure what you are getting at, but there should be no nerd fights on this site by anybody
April 28th, 2008 at 8:31 am
Galloway, Meeks, Harris, Patterson, Stevenson. Im sure Miller is good but Billy G likes Razors D and I think he will be even better this year with more offense. I hope Harrelson comes, if he doesnt start then he adds depth. I really believe Carter will be a contributor next season. He should be far away from the injuries, and get to go at it from the boot camp. Im assuming Jasper is gone, wish he wasnt, but it sounds like it. Liggins, Miller, Porter, provide depth. I really hope the Cats can get Majok. With Thabeet,Adrian, and Robinson returning to their frontcourt I think its UK, or Baylor.
April 28th, 2008 at 8:58 am
#29 You’re comment about Carter is just hysterical lol. Ya, now that he’s injury free he might be able to join the towel boy team and go scrub the slick spots off the floor.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:00 am
#22 Ya, Billy G. was on the verge of stock piling 5 star kids at A&M. He had Deandre Jordan, but then Billy G. left for KY.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:01 am
Clandestine, go to MINNESOTA you Tubby freak! lol
April 28th, 2008 at 9:02 am
I wrote off Cousins loss to UAB because Davis had been on him longer. If we lose Harrelson to Majaris then I got to believe our name just doesn’t have the recruiting pull we think it does.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:09 am
31) one 5-star kid is not stock piling, but tell me if you agree with this, I dont think he is the type of coach who takes the highest rated kids, he takes kids who fit his system, liggins is a highly rated kid but he also fits the system well, and frankly most 5-star kids DONT fit his system of hard-nosed defense and patience on offense, I just hope UK fans dont freak when his classes are not in the Top 10 every year, guys like Pearl and Pitino have systems built for super-athletic, offensive-minded players (i.e. 5 stars)
April 28th, 2008 at 9:10 am
I am not placing blame on Tubby, but here is a theory:
Next year’s senior class is pretty much nonexistent. Its like we just a took year off recruiting after having the #1 class the year before.
We need some experienced players on the squad, so that is why BCG is chasing all these juco guys from obscure places out west.
They come in as a junior, play 2 years and then make room for other guys.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:15 am
I hate to agree with 33 on that but I am starting to feel the same way. I love my cats no matter who is on the floor next season, but I wish something would happen in our favor to make me feel better about our chance to go deep in the turny. Sorry for putting my feelings in there I know I might get a hard time for that. GO CATS
April 28th, 2008 at 9:42 am
35.) Not raining on your parade but we only had one recruit the next year, and we “wasted” it on a 4 star kid from Kentucky. If you remember correctly our former coach got a ton of heat for not taking a top instate recruit the year before. I think Carter was a good pick up at the time considering the circumstances our coach was facing…
April 28th, 2008 at 9:43 am
^^^^ side not if Carter chooses UNC over us and did well, then OTS would have been sent packing long ago.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:43 am
^^^side note
April 28th, 2008 at 9:56 am
#34 I clearly said on the “Verge”, which doesn’t mean he already was stock piling. Well now that that’s out of the way, Billy G. has done stated that he wants the tallest, most talented, fastest kids he can get. He clearly wants these 5 star elite recruits because he offers them scholarships and they want nothing to do with us. He better hope he’s mixing a few of the higher caliber recruits in with the hard nosed types or he won’t last here. I do agree with you on the fact that most 5 star kids don’t fit his system of hard nosed defense. I don’t like the patient offense, I’m hoping he only did that because he had to.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:57 am
We need to face it in case many of us have forgotten there is parity in college basketball. If it were not for the national media loving NC, UCLA & Duke so much they would be having the same troubles we are. Of course I have to add, our fanbase has not helped us, as they were critical if not downright hateful from the start 11 years ago. Furthermore instead of being supportive when troubles arose, negativity run amok. So it is our own fault the media has dropped us.
But to echo some others on here, id rather have players here that want to be here first and foremost. Heart has just about as much to do with winning as does talent “Unforgettable”. So lets support the team unconditionally and eventually we will be back.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:57 am
#34 – I think (and hope) that you are wrong. When BG came to UK he said he would “swing for the fences” in terms of recruiting. I think he has every intention of stock piling 5 stars. He couldn’t do it at T A&M but he’s going to try at UK. Look at his recruits that he brought in as an assistant at Illinois. Look at the last few final fours and you will see stockpiles of 5 stars (UNC, KU, UCLA, Memphis, etc.). BG is smart enough to know what is going to take to go all the way and a bunch of Ramone Harris’ (good D and patient on offense) is not going to cut it.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:59 am
Wow, Goodman says Liggins is a top 20 impact freshman, and compares him to Ronnie Brewer. Dont know how he is like Brewer, but sounds good. I knew Liggins would be good, but if Goodman is givin UK props, then he must be real good.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:01 am
42- I see what your sayin, but you do need Harris type players. Jackson for KU is a guy like that. He improved every year and passed up some of the folks he sat behind before.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:03 am
#41 – The media doesn’t play the games the players do. I am so sick of the “parity” excuse. I would argue that there is less parity than ever. All of the #1 seeds went to the F4 this year for the 1st time. UNC KU UCLA have been perennial top seeds since the 90′s when we used to be one. Can you explain exactly how the media has helped these other teams avoid mediocrity?
April 28th, 2008 at 10:05 am
Because they are the team that stay in the spotlight, thus they are the first choices of talented players.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:06 am
Its generally about what team can get them into the NBA.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:58 am
#42 He could do it at A&M. The last year he was there was when they really became a big time contender. He would’ve been realing it 5 star players if he had stayed there.
April 28th, 2008 at 11:46 am
Tamme is a smart but doesn’t he know all guys like tight ends.
April 28th, 2008 at 12:27 pm
#35, O.K. I’ll tell you, you are wrong(you asked for it) Billy G. does not recruit toward a system. I have heard him say countless times that he gets the fastest, biggest, best shooting, best defending, and so on kids he can get. He does recruit kids that are tough minded, meaning that they will play hard nose ball on both ends of the court. That coach at Minn. on the other hand, recruits toward a system. Not saying good or bad on Clydes part, just saying.
April 28th, 2008 at 12:49 pm
#7 I have a feeling Ramon Harris will keep his starting role. Darius Miller will start when he is a (so.)
April 28th, 2008 at 12:55 pm
51.) So you think Ramon Harris will start as a Junior and not as a Senior??
April 28th, 2008 at 12:56 pm
I am all about BCG turning this thing around, but why is it that so many of the kids we are/were looking at this year are a few fries short of a happy meal. I dont understand why we would want someone here who struggles to spell their name, after all those are the kids that will likely tear a program down (failing out, leaving early, bad influence on others). I hope this does not become a common theme, I pride myself in being a fan of a quality program, I do not know how Cinci and FSU fans sleep at night….
April 28th, 2008 at 5:59 pm
certainly did not imply that, you do not know what position miller will get moved to in 09-10. ramon will start the rest of his career cause he works his a$$ off, but miller
(i believe) can put up big numbers on the college level.
