Dre’ Goes….Finally

by @ 4:45 pm. Filed under Blue Blooded Opinions

In what had to be a very difficult day for a great young man, Andre Woodson was picked by the Giants in the 6th Round today. It is a tough spot for our man, with Eli as the firm starter, David Carr signed as a backup and J-Load a coach’s favorite on the roster. It is hard to forsee this turning out well for one of our former Kentucky quarterbacks and I must admit to being disappointed to seeing him head to the Giants. But he was picked and he certainly has a great deal of motivation going forward.

You cant tell me that Andre deserved to go in the 6th round….but life is all about how you respond to adversity….being benched for Curtis Pulley may have been bad but watching Colt Brennan, Erik Ainge and two guys from San Diego schools go before you may be worse. Heres hoping today turns into the beginning of something great for Andre.

That’s great news for him being with Lorenzen to show himthe ropes of NFL life.

  2. pulley1fan Says:

i dont think they go with Four QB so i think one of the KY boys are out i dont know i would love to see New York trade in to Tennessee lol

  3. ConcreteCat Says:

Who is this freakin Josh Johnson? He would have done well in Tampa!

  4. ConcreteCat Says:

Dre would have done well in Tampa!

  5. Steve Perry Says:

David Carr is the odd man out. This will be a good spot for Woodson. Biggest market in the NFL, chance to study behind the SuperBowl MVP. Clearly he wasn’t ready to start but could solidify the backup job to Eli with Lorenzen as the third string, which he was during the playoffs. Go G-MEN and Go CATS!!!

  6. Woo Says "I Take Yo Money!" Says:

Andre Woodson is going to be a successful qb in the NFL, if you want to see how a weird delivery affects your game in the NFL look at Phillip Rivers. NFL players aren’t robot prototypes, thats why Steve Smith of the Panthers is one of the best wide recievers in the game and he’s only 5’9, look as Wes Welker. I’m never watching the freaking NFL draft again. What is so important about the damn senior bowl anyway? It’s one freaking game, how does that erase a whole college career? So you can’t learn a new offensive scheme in a week, that makes you a bad qb? Ridiculous.

  7. bluegoose Says:

I hope he gets traded…I would hate to see Dre’ or the Man Mountain cut….

  8. perrystevensonsappetite Says:

I have a hard time seeing him breaking camp with the Giants. Eli is the starter and I don’t see Tom Coughlin taking a risk on a young guy unless he just blows Carr and Lorenzen out of the water. Even if he does stick with them, sitting a year in NYC doesn’t have the same benefit it did for Carson Palmer or Jamarcus Russell as there is no way Andre is the Giants’ long term QB. Really tough day for a great former Cat.

  9. dudewheresmygillispie Says:

THe risk/reward was too compelling at 198. If they can fix his mechanics he is worth a first round draft pick in a trade. This way he can come in without any expectations and have some time to develop. David Carr is done. JLo has had two years and doesn’t seem much better. Neither player presents any value beyond being a clipboard holder. However Dre could give them plenty of future value. No one else in the draft at that point had as much value. I am very disappointed for him but it never ceases to amaze me how the draft analysts miss on players every year.

  10. BravoBigBlue Says:

There were several teams that needed to add a QB to their roster. The NY Giants are not one of them. I don’t think he’ll make the roster. Hopefully, something will open up on another team.

  11. RetireChucks44 Says:

Love the comment from Giants GM Jerry Reese:

Q: Why did Woodson last this long?

A: Why did Tom Brady? It is different things for different quarterbacks. You never know. This is the draft and things happen in the draft. A lot of guys get overlooked. How many guys were free agents who were really good players. Why did they get passed over so many times?

  12. macon_volfan Says:

come on Matt, you really think Woodson is better than Ainge? Stick to hoops my friend.

  13. sf10275 Says:

Even if he doesn’t make the cut in NY, he has another chance to show what he can do and maybe impress someone else. He’s got his foot in the door.

  14. commonwealthambassador Says:

#12….wow. Nearly all I can say. wow.

  15. armstrong Says:

I guess beating the national champs and leading a struggling team to back to back
bowl wins setting records along the way in the toughest college football conference
in america isn’t enough to impress scouts. andre is gonna be good. he is also now playing
behind one of the most overated quarterbacks in NFL history. thats right im talkin about
    eli. he sucks

  16. ukcatfan88 Says:

12–Physically, yes. Mentally, a toss-up. But seeing as I hate UT, I have to give Dre the edge. UT has not had a good QB since Manning. The rest of the team carries the weight. Without some lapses these past two years, we had UT beat twice. Makes me sick we didn’t, but if we win those two games, then I say Dre is way better than Ainge. Unfortunately, I think Dre and Ainge will both be career backups.

  17. Japrick Says:

this years draft was a joke anyway. who takes an offensive lineman with the first overall pick? and then pays him 10+ million a year. ridiculous.

  18. chuckmashburn Says:

16- Tee Martin won a title. I wish Woodson would have went to the Vikings, Rams, Chiefs, 49ers, Skins, but the Giants. Man I hope he ends up elsewhwere soon. I feel like he will be a success.

  19. Japrick Says:

I would like to hear what Rich Brooks has to say about this draft. The SEC record holder for most TD’s in a season and national record holder for most pass attempts without an interception is no better than a 6th round selection. A first team all-SEC linebacker who lead the league in tackles his senior year doesn’t get drafted at all. They said Woodson made bad decisions(40 TD’s, 11 INT’s) Woodyard’s tackling technique needs work(led the SEC in tackles) Johnson doesn’t have sure hands(caught winning TD against both Louisville and LSU). I think the name across the chest scared them off. Just another way for them to disrespect Kentucky football.

  20. Ken T. Ucky Says:

I don’t think Woodson’s future is with New York, but hopefully he can develop what he needs to there. In 2 or 3 seasons I think we’ll see him playing somewhere.

  21. dudewheresmygillispie Says:

The draft is about measurables. #19 I totally agree with you. I saw them run footage of Booty kissing his booty during the whole segment. Jaws said he loved the way JDB always found the WR in single coverage. That would be the wide open WR in the middle of the field b/c he was throwing to the best WR talent in the nation. All I saw was small handed weak armed QB throwing balloon balls to wide open WR. If Woodson would have been doing it he would have been likened to Danny Wuerffel. Then I heard another tv analyst talk about another QB and the way he lead the WR into open space and how that was anticipation. But when Mel Kiper talked about Woodson he was quick to point out how Woodson had a number of very talented players around him making good catches and masking his bad throws. I love Burton but I watched him drop multiple 20+ yard passes that were perfectly thrown to him. The jury was in on Woodson before the draft. Woodson should travel to San Fran and kick Mike Martz in the balls. It is a damn shame what Martz did to him at the senior bowl.

  22. dudewheresmygillispie Says:

    From NYC News site.

*Andre’ Woodson, QB, 6-4, 227, taken in the sixth round, the 198th overall pick.

Tall, strong-armed quarterback who played in 44 games with 38 starts for the Wildcats. Started every game in which he played in his final three seasons. Completed 791 of 1,278 passes (62 percent) for 9,360 yards, 79 touchdowns and 25 interceptions. He is second in school history in pass attempts, yards, offensive plays (1,510) and total yards (8,870) to current Giant Jared Lorenzen. In 2007, Woodson was a second-team All-SEC selection and was the team MVP for the second year in a row. He set school and conference records with 40 touchdown passes while completing 327 of 518 throws. Woodson was a star at North Hardin High School in Radcliffe, Ky.

“This was just too good a pick for us to pass up,” Coughlin said. “This is a guy that was rated highly on our board. We found ourselves in a position where we felt like he was a guy we wanted to bring in as a young quarterback who could work in our system and be a guy who we could develop as we went forward.”

“For years we have talked about bringing in a young quarterback and developing him in our system,” Reese said. “Let him grow up here. This guy has got a strong skill set. We like a lot of things about him. He is very productive playing for Kentucky. He has a lot of production over his years there as a quarterback. He has the arm to make all of the throws. He is a pretty good athlete for that position. So there are a lot of positive things about him down there in the draft room. We are going to bring him along and see if he can challenge for some of our backup quarterback spots.”

The Giants currently have five quarterbacks: Eli Manning, plus backups Anthony Wright, David Carr, Lorenzen and Woodson.

“I doubt that we bring five quarterbacks to training camp,” Reese said, “so the competition will start quickly.”

  24. BIGBLUEDAVE Says:

I love Woodson in college, at UK. I am a die hard UK “All Sports” Fan.
But, he is not going to do anything at the next level, in my opinion. I am not at all surprised that he slipped to where he did. He is just one of those guys that I think was an OUTstanding college player, but will not translate to the NFL.
I would love nothing more, than to be wrong.
But, if I was an NFL team, I wouldn’t have drafted him at all. I love Dre’ and I love UK, but I think Dre’ at UK, is all he’s gonna do as a QB…..unfortunately.

  25. BIGBLUEDAVE Says:

The fact that Wesley Woodyard didn’t go, is ridiculous! Someone is going to get a STEAL with a free agent signing!
