Now I have been known to engage in hyperbole in my day. I once called Chevy Chase “a talk show host that will define a generation”, Laser discs “a technology that will never be matched” and Rick Pitino “a moral role model for an entire generation’s youth.” But sometimes quotes even make me back up and say “hey we all need some perspective.” Take this one from John Calipari in his new blog on Coachcal.com (which has some GREAT stuff about his trip to Haiti yesterday):
“For me – and I know they’re may people mad when I say it – but because this is a player’s program, this may be the biggest day in the history of Kentucky basketball,”
Now dont get me wrong, I think this is a great day. In fact, as it pertains to UK players reaching the NBA, this is clearly the greatest day of NBA Draftdom ever. But lets face it, UK basketball has had some pretty amazing moments. For most UK fans, its about the name on the front of the jersey and not the one on the back, so the seven national championships, infinite number of SEC titles and general butt kickings given to Louisville/Tennessee/Indiana/UNC, etc, are probably more memorable. But I do love Calipari’s excitement and bond with his players. As my man Bomani has so often said, “All of these coaches rub me the wrong way…but I will always like Calipari the best because he does right by the kids. That is what matters.” Bomani is exactly right. There is no coach who takes care of his kids and THEIR (as opposed to his) interests more. That will, and should, be celebrated tonight…for the first of many Drafts to come.

It will be nice when Stephenson or Harris get a job and Calipari tweets, “The college education diploma at its best, congrats Razor!”

Like the man said I’m more concerned at the name on the front of the jersy as to the back, and I’m in NOWAY a fan of the pro game since Byrd, Magic, and Jordon, but I’ll have to say this I’m really excited to see where “OUR KIDS” go tonight. Maybe that’ll do it!………GO CATS!!!!!!!!!

he gets it (has that ever been said?) while he does put his players first, he also knows that potential recruits see him doing that. same way with any business…you treat your employees right, other people wanna work for you.

I hope Matt was using hyperbole when he made comments about Calipari in Memphis prior to the National Championship in 2008….

This IS the biggest day in Cal’s Kentucky Basketball history – a history of about 14 months. For many of us, it’s just another great day to be a UK fan.
Keep plugging Cal. Keep plugging.
