[Moderated by Matt Jones]

The law game is striking today, so the Sutton and Harrellson transcripts will be available later. I did however have a quick conversation today with PG prospect Paul McCoy’s coach. The PG from Oregon is coming to town for the Derby Classic and an official visit to Kentucky. According to his coach, the interest between Kentucky and McCoy is “very strong” and he believes that McCoy sports an offer at this point. He said that McCoy is considering Kentucky, Virginia, Washington State and SMU but at this time he believes that “Kentucky is right there at the top.” McCoy’s coach, Tony Broadous, said that the player is like “a bit stronger of a Tony Parker”, able to get to the basket against most defenders. “The thing coaches like best about him is his ability to hit the jumper off the high screen like Parker,” Coach Broadous said. According to Broadous, the Cats’ coaches have spoken to McCoy about coming and playing point and helping at the position next year.
Interesting stuff on McCoy who may have more interest in the Cats (and vice-versa) than we have previously known.

This is an article in today’s Oregonian about McCoy considering the Cats. It sounds like its KY and VA
April 4th, 2008 at 1:28 pm
Thanks for the update Matt, emailed you a couple days ago concerning McCoy.
McCoy sounds pretty solid and we need a PG.
April 4th, 2008 at 1:29 pm
I trust Coach and all, but how many PG’s do we need on this team?

In case someone hasn’t found it yet, the All-star game that Ramel Bradley is playing in is tonight at 6pm EST on CSTV (which I think is now called CBSC).
April 4th, 2008 at 1:40 pm
I don’t know that we have any “True Point Guards” yet #3. Lots of 6′5″ - 6′7″ guards, but we need a speed deamon who run the show. How big is this kid?
April 4th, 2008 at 1:46 pm
McCoy originally committed to go to Pepperdine so he could play with Brad Tinsley. He and Tinsley are buds and want to play together. Now both are looking for new schools. Unfortuntately, I do not see KY on the list of schools recruiting him. Tinsley and McCoy are the best two players in the state of Oregon by far. Last year the state produced Kevin Love and Kyle Singler, both of which had good years as freshman. There is a pretty strong high school basketball program in the state.
April 4th, 2008 at 1:48 pm
Guess I should look before I ask. He is listed on Rivals but as a Football recruit. They list him as being 5′11 175 lbs. Very fast. If his coach is being ligit and forthright about his description of the kid, I have a good feeling about this one. You can’t teach speed and quickness, and I think that has been a shortcoming of ours for a few years at the point.
April 4th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
#6, fair enough, just seems like a scoring SG might be a higher priority. But, there’s a reason they pay BCG the big bucks and not me.

This coaching staff never ceases to amaze me.
You think you’re done, then WHAM!!! you read about the next possible recruit.
Keep on keeping on Warrior and staff!
April 4th, 2008 at 1:55 pm
I am curious #9 on where Miller and Liggins will fit into the system, what their roles will be. Miller, to me looks like a bigger version of Jodie Meeks, with maybe not quite the outside stroke, but a litter better creating off the bounce. I don’t know enough about Liggins to even comment.
April 4th, 2008 at 1:56 pm
thanks #11
April 4th, 2008 at 1:56 pm
#9-shooting guard a high priority?
Liggins, meeks. Miller, jasper, and galloway can all play the 2-3… We do need another”scorer” but who is the true “lead guard” that bcg talks about wanting?
April 4th, 2008 at 2:00 pm
I saw Liggins run the point on offense at the Marshall Co Hoopfest and I was really impressed with his court vision and passing. Thought he handled the ball very well. Of course, this wasn’t the SEC either…
April 4th, 2008 at 2:04 pm
#15, I don’t think any of those guys but Meeks get minutes at the SG position. At least, that’s not they’re natural position. I think Meeks plays 35-40 minutes a game next year at that spot unless we get somebody who can shoot well enough to spell him. PG and even SF is a logjam, though, IMO.
April 4th, 2008 at 2:04 pm
I just looked at his basketball rivals page. According to the schools listed, we should have no trouble getting him if we want him. unless one of the other teams have some sort of inside track. He is listed as a 2 star recruit, not that I put everything into their ratings.
April 4th, 2008 at 2:09 pm
We have a good poing g in Jasper this McCoy looks like a guy that by the end of his soph to his junior year he may be legit.
If the recruits keep rolling, we will have an INSANELY deep bench.
Deep benches also protect you from 1 and done players.
April 4th, 2008 at 2:12 pm
Here is a great link about UK recruiting from Scout. I have Harrellson, Flemings, and McCoy on my personal wishlist.

April 4th, 2008 at 2:21 pm
#19 I love Jasper too. But truth is, our point guards got punked by Marq’s guards going to the lane. He has advantages with his length, but he is not quick or fast.
April 4th, 2008 at 2:22 pm
when is the last day of the spring sighning period for LOI ??
April 4th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
while were talkin about recruits…has anybody checked out kc ross-millers stats on maxpreps.com? Holy freakin cow, there was one game where he went for 40pts, 14rbs, 11ast, and 5 steals in a loosing effort!

April 4th, 2008 at 2:32 pm
#25 exactly. he is apparently all they have and yet mobody was able to stop him all year. but then again somebody has got to be catching all those passes and putting the ball in the goal for him to be getting all those assists. and look at his assist/turnover ratio. 389 assist/31 turnovers. now im no math major but isnt that a 12.5/1 ratio!
April 4th, 2008 at 2:48 pm
Sutton and McCoy IMHO seem to be the guys taking the places of the Napolean Dynomite aka Coury, and Stewart, and, insert name here.
Whats really exciting is that players like Sloan will be taking spots formerly held players like Krebs, or Scherbanzke.
if your going to be wearing the UK uni, better be good enough to take the floor. and i think thats what BCG is compiling. Looking forward to it.
April 4th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
#17- Sure I’d love to have a pure shooter to come in and play the 2. But in our system the 2 and 3 are pretty much interchangable. On the defensive end we have even more guys who can guard the 2 or 3. Ramon Harris proved to be our best perimeter defender this year.
PG-Jasper, Liggins
SG-Meeks, Liggins, MIller, Galloway
SF-Harris, Jasper, Liggins, Miller, Galloway
The bottom line is that we can justify signing either a PG or a SG. It appears that BCG wants big athletic SG’s as opposed to offensive threats at SG.
April 4th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
Throw Porter in there at the 2 as well.
April 4th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
thanks GoCats
April 4th, 2008 at 2:57 pm
#21 - remember Jasper was still battling through serious knee surgery, and perhaps was a bit slower than he could be because of it… however I like the idea of having a super-quick PG to run the show, with Meeks our main outside scoring threat, and ALL our other wings able to handle, pass, defend and finish around the basket
April 4th, 2008 at 2:58 pm
and McCoy apparently has a knack for scoring and a decent jump-shot to boot, so I would prefer that over another wing player in the 6-4 to 6-6 range at this point
April 4th, 2008 at 3:03 pm
you guys are talking about a slasher. We seriously have a good pg in Jasper, ESPECIALLY if he keeps using his new found 3 point shot. and if he is 100% from his knee. Meeks is the slasher, all we really need is depth in a few places. (liggins, miller, sloan, galloway,)
April 4th, 2008 at 3:15 pm
It’s not a given that Meeks will even be ready. The UK med staff has fiddle-farted around for 5 months. Fix the kid!
April 4th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
#35-Foolish post. You don’t want to perform an invasive surgery unless you have to. And doing the sports hernia surgery would be VERY invasive and riskky. It’s a realtively new surgery and you want to make sure you get the right guy to do it, and that you do the surgery the right way.
Do some research before you make a stupid post.
April 4th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
Anybody who thinks jasper can play point does not watch or know UK basketball. he cannot handle the ball against pressure, he cannot defend quickness, he cannot create his own shot and he cannot make free throws.
What he can do is defend a #3 man and defensive rebound. he can pass the ball well in the set offense. he is a 2/3 man at best. We need a quick point guard or completely switch from a man team to a 2-3 zone team like Pitino & Matta have done. No way Liggins, Galloway & jasper can contain the quickness in College basketball. The game is about drive and dish.
April 4th, 2008 at 3:24 pm
Has Matt addressed the CBCG to OSU talk? PTI and Fineman on WashPost today. Please make it stop…
April 4th, 2008 at 3:25 pm
I’ll say this much, both Harrelson & McCoy sound like good names for Kentucky Players.
Go Cats,
April 4th, 2008 at 3:27 pm
#7 beat me to the point… Jasper was slow befoe the knee. he can handle the rock, but not full time. That’s why Bradley never came out. The more I read about this kid, the better he sounds… sign him up we can use all the help we can get.
April 4th, 2008 at 3:49 pm
Folks I have said all along that Gillispie WON’T TAKE the OSU job. Here’s what has me up at night: Gillispie taking the KANSAS job once SELF takes OSU. The only basketball tradition that can historically rival ours. There’s some smoke.
April 4th, 2008 at 4:02 pm
41) Do you think KU can historically rival us? I grew up in Kansas and I would argue not. I’m not “worried” about Coach G. leaving, but if he does, I’d be shocked. Make my heart stop shocked.
Self going to OSU would really, really surprise me. It’s not like Roy moving to UNC, which was a lateral move (if not a step up). The Heels were somewhat “down” when Doherty was fired, but they had much more talent than the current Cowboys team does.
April 4th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
Sorry, I forgot to say that the only edge the Jayhawks MIGHT have over UK is less scrutiny. Marginally less.
April 4th, 2008 at 4:07 pm
43) I think Marginally is an understatement.
April 4th, 2008 at 4:09 pm
41. It would be a lateral move at best… but on the other hand they’re in better shape right now. Main thing is, I love BCG, but he’s not gonna make or break Kentucky basketball. It was on top long before him, and it’ll be on top long after him.
April 4th, 2008 at 4:17 pm
The turn of this thread seems a bit odd to me….McCoy has potential but it’ll be awhile.
April 4th, 2008 at 4:21 pm
36, sorry Doc I didn’t realize we had such a genius on here. Now, push away from your computer and go fix the kid….jerk.
April 4th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
Our tradition is from Rupp, Rupp is from KU. Our tradition, arguably, can be attributed to KU. I am the biggest UK fan ever, but due to his ties and KU tradition, I could see it.
Self to OSU would be a HUGE get for them, but considering the pay, his reputation in Kansas as a choke artist, his alma mater, and more importantly, the likely fallout from his likely loss to UNC and Roy Williams, AKA, public enemy #1 in Lawrence, Self would be on the first flight to Stillwater.
April 4th, 2008 at 4:25 pm
#42- good points though, I’m not saying I’m right. Just the fact that a guy named Naismith is from there, and the aforementioned points makes KU a juggernaut like UK. We did make them change their name by the way (I mean, is it REALLY Kansas University?).
April 4th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
McCoy is know as a “prolific” scorer, and a 3 sport star. He runs track and plays football, maybe even all-state in football multiple years? People we need athletes, that is what McCoy is.
I don’t see miller at the SG.
April 4th, 2008 at 4:30 pm
IMHO we don’t need another freakin’ guard. Galloway, Jasper, Liggins can all play point, plus we got Meeks, Slone, Porter, Harris. We have a PG coming in 2009 in Villarino, and KC in 2010. We need some big guys and perhaps a scorer at the SG spot, since we only have one who is all banged up. And where are the scholarhsips going to come from? I think we only have 1 scholly left for 2008, and 1 for 2009 only if Carter’s doesn’t count.
April 4th, 2008 at 4:34 pm
Kansas is one the most historic basketball programs ever. Look at some of the names associated with the Kansas program.
James Naismith - Inventor of the game of basketball
Phog Allen - Coached 1952 national championship team
Adolph Rupp - Played under Allen at KU from 1919-1923/Third in mens all time victories
Dean Smith - Played under Allen at KU in early 50’s/Second in mens all time victories
Larry Brown - Played for Dean Smith/Coached KU’s 1988 national championship team/ Only coach to win NCAA & NBA titles
Roy Williams - Played for Dean Smith/Had an 80% winning percentage in 15 years as head coach of Kansas.
Without Kansas, the two “most historic” programs would be nothing. Kentucky is still number one in my book, but no bad mouthing Kansas.
April 4th, 2008 at 4:34 pm
Harellson and McCoy would be huge pickups at this late stage.
These two seem like impact players.
April 4th, 2008 at 4:36 pm
49) Well, by your Rupp-KU logic, then KU is responsible for UNC’s tradition because Dean Smith went there. I would say that the traditions at all three (KU from Allen, UNC from Smith and UK from Rupp) are manifestations of the men themselves, not where they came from. (Pointless trivia–Naismith is the only coach in KU history with a losing career record.)
I think Self gets a bit of a free pass for getting to the Final Four, though I know plenty of KU fans that will freak out if they lose to UNC. That game could be a barn burner.
To your last, and far more important, point:
It’s the University of Kansas, but I always tell people that they go by KU because someone was UK first!
April 4th, 2008 at 4:45 pm
To take it a (unprecedented) step further #54, my logic, which I stand by, would submit that KU is responsible (or at least due a mention) for ALL traditions due to Naismith. KU can absolutely take some credit for the founder of the game establishing himself there. I know that if he chose UK, I certainly would add that to our resume. But by your logic, would UK then have a tradition if it was a manifestation of Adolph Rupp, therefore he himself having said tradition?
April 4th, 2008 at 5:00 pm
55) Well, looks like we’re having a battle any philosophy class would be proud of! I would submit to you that, yes, it is possible that UK would not have it’s tradition without Rupp. In my opinion, the rise of Kentucky was a result of his interpersonal skills as a leader and friend. I think few could argue that his ability to gain others’ trust and motivate them was the bedrock of his success, as it would be for pretty much anyone that came from poverty to fame.
My point is that, with Rupp or Smith or Wooden or whoever, given a similar situation (access to talent, facilities, fan support) could have elevated the University of Timbuktu. They were all driven men that understood how to reach people.
My brain hurts.
April 4th, 2008 at 5:25 pm
51) we need a guard a lot worse than you think my friend. Look at all the teams in the final four, what is the constant? Why couldn’t standford make it to the final four?
Slone, Porter, Harris — none can handle the ball under pressure.
We need another guard in the worst way, im not sure how this season doesn’t show that?
I guess being deep is something fans will have to get use too?
April 4th, 2008 at 5:25 pm
Point forward and a true point are 2 different things. You have to have a true point.
April 4th, 2008 at 5:34 pm
McCoy is exactly what UK needs, a point that can score and create. His scoring could help replace what they lose in Bradley. We have seen what G can do with gaurds so if he likes this kid then i do to.
April 4th, 2008 at 5:37 pm
I wouldnt put Wooden with Smith and Rupp. Smith and Rupp have never had a team with a professional payroll like Wooden, and that is what made him. He was decent before his players were paid and decent after, he won all his titles while they were being paid.
April 4th, 2008 at 5:37 pm
Anyone have any video links of this kid playing I have seen one like 17 sec clip of him driving on someone but thats it.
April 4th, 2008 at 6:15 pm
I heard Scott Padgett say on the radio this wek, that he thought that Self going to OSU was a sure thing…surely BCG wont leave us for Kansas or any other school after what i have seen this week..
April 4th, 2008 at 7:14 pm
#61 - He should have been called for an offensive foul on that play. He clearly hooked the defender.
April 4th, 2008 at 7:25 pm
#47- you’re the one throwing stones at our team md’s… Read about the issue and you’ll figure out it isn’t as simple as you stated… Like I said… Get a clue before you post
April 4th, 2008 at 8:15 pm
Many people are getting stressed over where our points are going to come from next year but I can see patterson and meeks averageing around 20ppg and with this incredibly deep bench we have we will be fine offensively. McCoy would be a great pickup along with harrelson. These two new walk ons are sharpshooters and I think will log some serious minutes and spread out the floor. We are going to be a great team next year. These 5 star recruits are nice but I trust what BCG sees in these lower ranked players and he will turn them into great players much as he has done all his coaching career.
April 4th, 2008 at 8:23 pm
Gillispie wont be going anywhere he loves kentucky way too much. If you watched Bill Keightly’s ceremony yesterday Gillispie did not sound like someone who wanted to run out of here. Gillispie has found his perfect fit he is as obsessed with basketball as us fans are which is somthing far diffrent that what we had with Tubby. He had a recruiting class of Jared Carter and adam williams thats a joke i could beat them.
April 4th, 2008 at 8:44 pm
McCoy may well end up at UK. He sounds like a combo guard, and look at what BCG did with Bradley, a combo guard; he actually was a rather good point guard.
He could give UK some offensive punch, and fit in really well within the BCG system!
April 4th, 2008 at 8:48 pm
65 you cannot count on freshman walkons to give you any points, come on now. This is the SEC, not the MAC.
April 4th, 2008 at 9:28 pm
68 - I agree, these in state walk-ons are surely very nice players and will help the team tremendously… in practice. But as freshmen they will rarely get a sniff of the court. Essentially, here is our team next year - Patterson, Stevenson, Harris, Jasper, Galloway, Meeks, Miller, Liggins, Porter… that’s a pretty solid (if thin up front) 9 guys. Would be nice to add McCoy and Harrelson or Sutton to that. How do any of the walk-ons crack the lineup? Also, although I think Sutton may have more long-term potential than Harrelson, I think Harrelson is what the team needs more now, someone who can contribute right away, be a scoring threat on the post, and add balance the schollys out a bit by class.

UK in 1st in poll for best college program-go vote!
April 4th, 2008 at 10:11 pm
First of all guys if Self takes the OK. ST. job there is no way Gillispie goes to Kansas. GET REAL!!!
Two Jasper was a pg but is not anymore. Galloway is supposed to be point guard and I heard on Jody Demlings radio show that he was the best point guard at one of the major summer camps his senior year of high school.
Third this MCCoy kid would be a great get because he would play point in a speedy sort of manner that a 6′7″ point guard can’t do. Harrelson will be a CAT no doubts about it.
Fourth We need a solid point guard. We have plenty of guys that can play the 2/3 position if needed but we don’t have any really good true point guards so this McCoy kid could be key.
April 4th, 2008 at 10:32 pm
68 I know they arent going to drop 20 on anybody, but they arent bad players. Good shooters fit in on any team. They will help us out next year. They are fans of Kentucky so you know they will play with heart.
April 4th, 2008 at 10:47 pm
70 Great link, i went back and voted 5 times.
April 4th, 2008 at 10:48 pm
Speaking of point guards…
I know this is probably way out of left field, but -
What is the deal with Tyreke Evans? Was he ever recruited by UK? Does he dislike UK or just never had any interest? What is it that he doesn’t like about UK or BCG doesn’t like about him? I am sure it is way too late, but he is undecided. Whoever gets him will get a dynamic, well rounded player. I hope it’s not the Cards.
April 4th, 2008 at 10:49 pm
Thanks, GoCats. I plan to vote early and often.
April 4th, 2008 at 10:51 pm
i didnt know you could vote more than once, thanks!
April 4th, 2008 at 11:04 pm
76) Are you a parapalegic? Serious question.
April 4th, 2008 at 11:05 pm
double-double for azubuike 15-10, he’s been starting a few games lately, i hope he makes the playoffs.
April 4th, 2008 at 11:11 pm
Honey get off the computer and come up to bed. I have Matts poster up for you, Please!
April 4th, 2008 at 11:12 pm
Can’t go wrong with a good, fast guard, but one who is smart first. Fast can equal careless.
April 4th, 2008 at 11:16 pm
IMO Harrelson and Flemings are the best possible bet. Forget projects like Sutton.
April 4th, 2008 at 11:19 pm
I still love to watch Kalenna play. I’ll always wonder what might have been if he had stayed four years. More Kalenna would equilibrate to less Bobby Perry and Sheray Thomas and no recruitment of Rekalin Sims. It would have completely changed the last four years.
April 4th, 2008 at 11:19 pm
#81 those are the 2 we need, McCoy would be a bonus.
April 4th, 2008 at 11:21 pm
Thats funny #68 and very true. Everyone is worried about points besides Patterson and meeks. No one seems to mention Miller. You can say he needs to develop his outside shot to be more effective or some shit like that, but the truth is he will score at least 10 a game. P Stevenson will put up 8-10 and we will still have a whole cast of others taking turns putting up good #s as well. GO CATS
April 4th, 2008 at 11:23 pm
hey GoCats (70),
I think your link helped. We gained a % point on UCLA
April 4th, 2008 at 11:24 pm

6′ and smaller gaurds that can handle the ball are a dime a dozen. not a big concern for us right now.
April 5th, 2008 at 12:45 pm
i just voted again, UK is starting to pull away, we will take a win in any form!!!!
April 5th, 2008 at 2:48 pm
what ever happend to the boy from new mexico jeff taylor… i heard he was averageing 31 and 16 idc where you play those are bad ass numbers we could use next yr
