[Moderated by Matt Jones]

The internet scuttlebutt running wild is that Landon Slone, the sharpshooter from Paintsville, Kentucky, has accepted an offer from UK to be a so-called “preferred walk-on” next year for the Cats. Slone is a scoring machine and had a terrific Senior season, leading his Paintsville team to the state tournament and scoring 35 points in the affair in a great first round win over Jeffersontown. Slone caught the attention of many in the state throughout the season, as his mixture of scoring and passing got him an offer from NAIA power, Georgetown College. I spoke this morning with someone from the sports director of the local Paintsville paper who told me that Slone HAS been offered a walk-on spot, but has not yet accepted. We are continuing to try and confirm this info, but for now that is where it looks as if it stands. Slone is a great mountain player, a good Kentucky kid and exactly what folks like in a walk-on. We will let you know when we hear something definitive.

solid. do all basketball players from paintsville have red hair?
March 31st, 2008 at 11:49 am
1 nYou are such a nerd!
March 31st, 2008 at 11:52 am
2) Good point!
March 31st, 2008 at 11:54 am
1) How old r u?
March 31st, 2008 at 12:01 pm
So here is my question. Say we do get Landon Slone, Adam Delph, Clark Stepp, and Bud Mackey all as walk-ons. How many walk-ons are we allowed? Can we have a 20 person bench or are we going to have to thin the herd?
March 31st, 2008 at 12:01 pm
And the coach has 2 names…Bill Mike Runyon…..How country is that? HAHAHA And I live in Pike Co. and say that!
March 31st, 2008 at 12:05 pm
NAIA Power Campbellsville also offered! Screw Georgetown!
You see, Keith Adkins is from Paintsville and was hoping the best kept secret in the state would come-on down to the Ville….
But the kid is living a dream!
March 31st, 2008 at 12:12 pm
this kid is legit, unless we get Mackey he would be the best walk-on on this team by far. Smart player who can rebound and pass to go along with his great mid range scoring and driving. Very strong, only downside is that he has a release similar to Josh Carrier on his 3 and probably won’t bode well with the new 3 pt line being moved back. Regardless, I hope he comes on board…….not trying to make him sound like an All-American or anything but would be a great walk-on.
March 31st, 2008 at 12:19 pm
I want this kid really bad. Just the type of player that could thrive under Gillispie’s coaching.
March 31st, 2008 at 12:20 pm
He is a tough, hard nose kid with a great shot. I live in
Paintsville and have watched his game progress. He has a
great outside stroke, but can also create on the move, and a good passer
and rebounder. He’s about 6′5″ with athletic bulk. None of these walk on
possibilities are done deals, including Slones, so I wouldn’t be
too worried about making room just yet. He has several scolly offers
on the table, and will likely get more. He would be a good add.
March 31st, 2008 at 12:28 pm
How big is he? It might be above somewhere but I have the reading comprehension skills of a 5 year old.
March 31st, 2008 at 12:29 pm
I’m from pville, and my only hope is that slone turns out to be a better baller than former painstville alum todd tackett… I knw the bar is high, but I have my fingers crossed.
March 31st, 2008 at 12:31 pm
How many rows of chairs does the NCAA allow for a team’s bench?
Surely we’ll have a JV team.
March 31st, 2008 at 12:32 pm
1) A fine quotation is a diamond on the finger of a man of wit, and a pebble in the hand of a fool.
FIRST = Pebble
March 31st, 2008 at 12:36 pm
#12, he is around 6′5″ I believe. I only saw him play once this year (at the All A Classic in Richmond) but I really liked his game. Seemed like a hard-nosed kid.
March 31st, 2008 at 12:36 pm
There is no doubt that we are recruiting for a JV team and some walk ons, my best guess would be that we will fill a JV team with walkons and the best of those performers will be on the bench come game night. This is an ingenious idea, I know that we experimented a couple of years ago with open tryouts but I dont think anything was official. However, a preferred walk-on status may be limited to a few.
March 31st, 2008 at 12:37 pm
#14, I think I did read somewhere that Mike Williams didn’t dress for the NCAA game cause of some number of people on the bench rule.
March 31st, 2008 at 12:40 pm
I hear that Slone and Majok are 2nd cousins…..any truth to that???
Hopefully he can help us recruit!!!!
March 31st, 2008 at 12:46 pm
Cameron Mills 2.0?
March 31st, 2008 at 12:47 pm
Cameron Mills 2.0?
March 31st, 2008 at 12:50 pm
19- I do see the resemblance.
March 31st, 2008 at 12:54 pm
My buddy is a high school coach. I’ve only heard good things about Slone on here but this is the only place I’ve heard about him. My friend said that Holmes shut him down. I realize a guy is going to get shut down now and then and that Holmes had one hell of a team. How good is this guy though? Was he only dominating small schools or can he compete against tough competition too?
March 31st, 2008 at 12:59 pm
Off the subject here… could anyone tell me what channel the Reds game is on Direct TV?? Thanks
March 31st, 2008 at 1:12 pm
he looks like a home grown version of Porter. any one know his height?
March 31st, 2008 at 1:16 pm
His height is mentioned above as 6′5″
I’m not saying I don’t want a homegrown sharp shooter. Love those types. I’m just looking for some unbiased input on the guy. I’m sure that BCG would not have invited him to join this future National Championship team if he didn’t believe in him….
March 31st, 2008 at 1:36 pm
I have never heard the term “preferred” walk-on. Is that an actual University term? Does it mean he gets a scholarship if one is available?
March 31st, 2008 at 1:50 pm
Man that is beautiful #15. Now if I only knew what the hell it meant.
Listen, the kid has potiental to be an “Effective” player. He is tough, smart, makes good decisions on the floor, and has a nose for the ball. He is not a superstar talent, but he is the kind of player that has a great chance of “overachieving”. He is Clydes type. He has skills, but he is tough, hardnosed, and smart. I hope it happens.
March 31st, 2008 at 1:50 pm
From my understanding, a perferred walk-on doesn’t have to try out (automatically on the team) and they get a scholarship if one is available (aka the Flurry this year).
March 31st, 2008 at 1:53 pm
Currys game has so many holes in it, his should have been called a “Perforated” walk on.
March 31st, 2008 at 1:53 pm
#24 it is 638 in Cincy but it may be some other 600 channel in your area. It is on Foxsports.
March 31st, 2008 at 2:01 pm
Are we just going to play 3 guard, P-Steve and P-Pat next year? Will Big Black Member ever get any playing time? Does Jared Carter have the knees of a 60 year old offensive lineman? Why has Perry Stevenson only gained 20 pounds in two years? I know that BCG was Co-Coach of the Year, but, did he earn the three-ring circus introduction that he got at Big Blue Madness? These are the questions we should be asking. Also, if news of a Walk on is all thats going on, could Tomlin report it, because then it’s unimportance would be set off by it’s hilarity. That is all.
March 31st, 2008 at 2:05 pm
Thanks #31!
March 31st, 2008 at 2:08 pm
With BCG, no one outside the very tight inner circle has any idea who is after until it happens, that is his proven style. As for Purry, you can’t grow hair on a pencil. Look at Tayshaun Prince, he is as skinny today as he was when he showed up as a Freshman at Rupp. And last but not least, I appreciate and love you hear any Balling News on here, especially regarding future potiental players. Walk on or not.
March 31st, 2008 at 2:10 pm
#32 If news about a possible walk-on is not what you want to hear then maybe you are on the wrong site. I find this much more interesting than the condition of Carter’s knees or why Stevenson is only gaining 20 pounds in two years.
Do you prefer to have threads about Wrestlemania?? This type of stuff is exactly why I come on this site and this is about as exciting as recruiting info is going to be for a couple weeks until the spring signing day gets closer.
March 31st, 2008 at 2:13 pm
When has internet scuttlebutt ever been wrong?
March 31st, 2008 at 2:15 pm
i think the term prefered walk on also means they get academic assitance from the school
March 31st, 2008 at 2:17 pm
“I know that BCG was Co-Coach of the Year, but, did he earn the three-ring circus introduction that he got at Big Blue Madness?”
Why would you even ask a question like this after one year as the head basketball coach–that is a question I want to know. And we wonder why people scrutinize UK and its fanbase, unbelievable!! I wish Woo would take your money, and your computer while he is at it.
March 31st, 2008 at 2:24 pm
Dude, the point I was making is that Big Blue Madness is bigger and blue’r and madnesser every year, its kind of ridiculous. Also, I guarantee that Perry Stevensons weight will have a much larger impact on the success of our season next year and the year after than whatever walk on we get. I hope we get an exception to the rule, ala Ravi Moss, but the guy is probably another Dusty Mills, just taller and ginger’er.
March 31st, 2008 at 2:28 pm
But I doubt Dusty Mills averaged 24.8 points a game as a senior… Also, Landon Slone is 6′3, not 6′5. I rechecked my numbers….
March 31st, 2008 at 2:31 pm
this KID is a PUNK … I would not allow him to set fot on campus. If you were not at the sweet 16
16 this year the review the holmes games tapes. He has a serious problem with certain people..
You read between the LINES…
March 31st, 2008 at 2:33 pm
No, ol’ Dusty averaged 2 points a game as a senior, but he’s a spark plug. No really, he is the size of a spark plug.
March 31st, 2008 at 2:37 pm
41, are you saying Landon Slone is a racist? Because the last thing we need at UK is a racist, ginger, walk on. Team Turmoil 2.1 here we come.
March 31st, 2008 at 2:42 pm
I’ve stood next to the guy and I’m 6′3″. He is a legit 6′3″ if not 6′4″.
March 31st, 2008 at 2:48 pm
are you a legit 6′3?
March 31st, 2008 at 3:02 pm
#41 I know you surely can’t type or spell, so I’m skeptical if you know anything about reading, especially in between lines… get a life, and stop bad mouthing recruits
March 31st, 2008 at 3:09 pm
#41, it sounds like you are the one that has problems with certain people. Just because Holmes kept him contained, maybe they were the better team (since they won that game), maybe there is no one else on Paintsville that could step it up that night so Holmes focused on this kid, maybe he just had a bad game. I think before you sterotype someone you need to look at the entire season and how they played against all competition…
March 31st, 2008 at 3:19 pm
So, sloan doesn’t care for sparkling wiggles? That’s disappointing.
March 31st, 2008 at 3:27 pm
Darrin Horn is the new head basketball coach at South Carolina.
http://johnclay.typepad.com/sidelines/2008/03/update-horn-to.html
March 31st, 2008 at 3:47 pm
so are all the sec coaches going to start in Kentucky? gottfried, pelphry, horn, etc
March 31st, 2008 at 3:50 pm
50-Don’t forget that Billy D. had a stint under Pitino as well
March 31st, 2008 at 3:50 pm
says something about kentucky basketball in general
March 31st, 2008 at 3:51 pm
Replace Paintsville with Kentucky across that jersey, and the black unis would look SWEET!
March 31st, 2008 at 3:52 pm
That’s good news for Horn though, I wish him luck. Way to cash in on this years tourney success.
March 31st, 2008 at 3:54 pm
53-maybe except for that V-neck. Might as well add a collar.
March 31st, 2008 at 3:58 pm
Before everyone gets worked up about whether this kid is actually any good, I think we should remember he is a walk on. He probably will never see the floor. That being said, he is a 6′5” kid who can shoot. That is incredible for a walk on. He is probably better than the majority of players who were receiving scholarships the last several years.
March 31st, 2008 at 3:59 pm
Dennis felton also came from WKU, Rick Stansbury was born in Ky. Watch Travis Ford end up at LSU
March 31st, 2008 at 4:03 pm
As an afterthought the number of coaches this state puts out there in one form or another really shows our love of basketball here in the bluegrass. i would love to see a list of coaches that have come through.
March 31st, 2008 at 4:11 pm
AND GEORGE MOLTON WILL BE COACHING AT VANDERBILT IN 2 YEARS. I ALWAYS KNEW HE WOULD END UP IN NASHVILLE
March 31st, 2008 at 4:15 pm
I’ve always like the black uni thing, for just a game or two a year maybe. Luoisville and Indiana maybe? Or Tennessee…Screw Pearl and his orange jacket…We’vw got black unis!
March 31st, 2008 at 4:19 pm
We can always use a good shooter with descent height. As long as he can play a little D, and can find a way to get his shot off at that level of play, which is very hard.
March 31st, 2008 at 4:21 pm
60- black unis are sofa king wee todd it.
March 31st, 2008 at 4:22 pm
Do they wear shoes in Paintsville?
March 31st, 2008 at 4:22 pm
why do ppl like to call out posters who post 1st, yet, they refuse to call out people that can’t spell decent? (#61) I just don’t get it, although i may be too young (24)?
March 31st, 2008 at 4:22 pm
The big problem with the black uniforms is that Dook has been rocking those for years….. I don’t want it to look like we are following their lead….
March 31st, 2008 at 4:23 pm
…and 60 wants black unis? You call outers, where you at?
March 31st, 2008 at 4:24 pm
there is no black in UK’s colors. Our only option out of the ordinary blue and white is grey. If we ever get black uni’s, we might as well become UL fans.
March 31st, 2008 at 4:25 pm
60 Where did you get the black uni’s info from …. just asking I havent seen anything about this
March 31st, 2008 at 4:31 pm
68.. I don’t think there’s any info in 60’s post, just an opinion.
March 31st, 2008 at 4:39 pm
#64 FlipISatrip-I would like to apologize to you personally for the mispelling of the word “decent”. Did not mean to hurt your feelings bro. It was a type-o, I did not run my spellcheck (Dam# it I should have known better), and I just was not aware that this was an official document.
My deepest apologies to you Sir,
P.S. You may want to check your punctuation. Usually sentences begin with a capital letter, and sentences ending with a question mark (? incase your wondering), usually ask a question.
March 31st, 2008 at 4:49 pm

69.) Is number 1 your little brother or something?
March 31st, 2008 at 4:51 pm
71-LOL That is rediculous huh? I do apologize to every other poster on the site.
March 31st, 2008 at 4:52 pm
72…. Heaven forbid someone try and help you out.
March 31st, 2008 at 4:57 pm

According to this site, Paintsville’s Landon Slone has decided to walk on at UK. Jodie Demling recently discussed this possibility.

March 31st, 2008 at 5:35 pm
75) thats funny.
BLUE & WHITE thats it. no black, or grey, or any other BS. BLUE & WHITE for the last 100+ years
and BLUE & WHITE FOR THE NEXT!!!
March 31st, 2008 at 5:35 pm
Landon is a great ballplayer and I’m glad Gillispie recognizes our mountain talent. Another name to watch out for is Tate Cox who will be a Junior. He’s a GREAT PG/SG and probably won’t have to walk on anywhere but let’s hope Gillispie finds Cox as well. I know one thing for sure, if Tubby was still here, Landon wouldn’t get this chance.
March 31st, 2008 at 5:37 pm
82- the only team with blue as a dominant color that wears black jerseys.
Black jerseys are gayer than a Paul Lynde/Charles Nelson Riley/Richard Simmons threesome.
March 31st, 2008 at 5:40 pm
MM reports he just got off the phone with Landon and For anyone who wants a “Ky Boy” on the team who knows what it means:

March 31st, 2008 at 5:43 pm
he’s coming to UK baby!
March 31st, 2008 at 5:44 pm
Ok, why read what marc writes about the kid when you can listen to it from Sloan’s mouth:
http://cdn2.libsyn.com/deener/slone.mp3
This is a GREAT interview.
March 31st, 2008 at 5:53 pm
any videos on this dude?
March 31st, 2008 at 5:57 pm
The is a great interview from a KY kid that has dreamed about playing
for the CATS. Landon is tough and I believe that he will be more than
just a walk-on when all is said and done.
March 31st, 2008 at 6:24 pm
Holmes didn’t really shut him down as much as Landon began deferring to Shane Grim, who had a big advantage on his man. Also Arrez Henderson is a tough matchup for a guy like Landon. At 5′10, stocky, and super athletic, Arrez could harrass him on the handle all day. The racist comment? I saw that game. I have no clue what you are talking about. He was shaking hands with everyone after the game and I didn’t hear him say anything.
March 31st, 2008 at 6:33 pm
70, actually that would be proper punctuation.
72, no but i have been here a long time and 1st is a fun tradition. I can’t fathom why ppl think it is so lame.
78, lol
Florida has started rocking black uniforms as well, but that list should be sufficient. (Duke, loserville, UF)
March 31st, 2008 at 6:45 pm
I wish we could just talk about Kentucky instead of people being babies about spelling or puctuation. I cant spell worth a shit so get over it. GO CATS
April 1st, 2008 at 12:12 am
Hey “Woo Says I take Yo MOney,”
I hope we can get a post from you tommorrow titled “Perry Stevenson is as thin as I am Retarded.” Come on man this is the kind of news that I as a UK fan love to hear. This kid has dreamed about playing ball at UK all his life. That to me is the best news I could ever hear as a fan and exactly my dream as well. This kid is going to be living any true blue fans dream.
I hope that Midnight Madness continues to get crazier every year. It is how Uk fans show their support for the team in the year to come.
I think you need to quit asking so many questions and trust our coach. He needs a few years but he will have us back on top. So in closing SHUT UP.
April 1st, 2008 at 12:46 am
Gillispie wants him. That should be reason enough to welcome him in, let alone he’s a damn Kentucky gymrat.
Welcome aboard Landon. Take a couple of steps back on your 3 from now on, we’re gonna need it to go in from there now. I bet this kid is happy as hell!
Go Big Blue!
April 2nd, 2008 at 4:52 pm
For the exception of TT, seems that all of the P-Ville boys have worked out well at UK. So for the doubters I would say that you dont have enough info. As far as Holmes shutting him down, did you see what they held every team they played to. This kid will end up no different than the past P-Ville boys like: Mayes, Couch, Pelphrey, all solid contributors on and off the floor/field.
April 2nd, 2008 at 5:01 pm
burkdd12, step out from behind the screan punk. You want to talk punk, we can arrange a little metting. You are not a UK fan anyway, just a little hatter.
