The Picks to Click is back after a much needed day off and some pretty interesting/funny news around the sports world:
My picks for the upcoming baseball season:
NL East: New York Mets
NL Central: Chicago Cubs (Reds finish 2nd)
NL West: Arizona Diamondbacks
Wildcard: Philadelphia Phillies (San Diego is gonna be real good also)
AL East: Boston Red Sox
AL Central: Detroit Tigers
AL West: Anaheim Angels
AL Wildcard: New York Yankees (watch out for Seattle)
I feel a little bit like Kige Ramsey making these picks because besides the AL West and NL West, the rest of these picks seem pretty obvious. And remember “the best way to cure acne is the rub a wet washcloth across your face.”
1. A name that has popped up recently on the recruiting landscape is Ater Majok. I am pretty sure this video hasn’t been posted on KSR, but if it has I apologize. Here are some highlights of Majok, dunking on a bunch of really small people in what appears to be some run down gym in Austrailia. Just my personal opinion, and this is only after watching a couple highlights, but Majok looks like a bit of a project.
2. Kentucky baseball has dropped back to Earth a little bit, losing 2 of 3 to 7th ranked South Carolina over the weeked. The Cats are now 5-4 in the SEC, losing 4 out of their last 7 games overall. Nonetheless, the Cats still lead the SEC in nearly every offensive category and in ERA. Intersting note: The Cats are actually tied for last in the SEC right now, but their 5-4 conference record would be good enough to LEAD the Western Division.
3. If you are not a fan of Stephen Curry then you just don’t like good basketball, as Curry probably had his worst game of the tournament in a 2-point loss to Kansas yesterday, and still scored 25 points. Curry was named Most Outstanding Player of the Midwest regional, only the 9th time is history that honor has been given to a player of a losing team. And even whats even better, Curry is coming back for at least one more season with Davidson.
4. One of the quirky things about sports that I can not stand is when players make a free throw and then basically force their teammates to slap hands before shooting the next foul shot. It drives me nuts!!! You hit a freakin free throw!!! Nobody is guarding you!!! An 85-year old woman can hit free throws if she practiced as much as an NBA player. Anyway, clearly the Milwaukee Bucks decided Andrew Bogut was not that impressive with his free throws, and hillarity insued.
5. So many sexy women lists have appeared on the Clicks that I feel the need to hit the other side of the issue. A webiste called The Pheonix has put out a list of the 100 unsexiest men on the planet. Several sports stars included on the list: Tom Brady, Tony Kornheiser, Larry Bird, Eli Manning, Isiah Thomas, and coming in at #1 Roger Clemens.
6. Congrats to all you Washington Nationals fans today, as you can actually say with a straight face “If the season ended now, we would be in the playoffs” or “We have the best record in the majors”. I will give them some credit, they did know how to bring some drama to the opening game in the U.S.
7. I will pay any KSR reader 10 dollars if you can do this. I will give you one hour to try. Amazing!!

Good Stuff!

What’s the low down on Majok? He’s not another Alleyne is he?
March 31st, 2008 at 10:05 am
I bet Bogut couldn’t make free throws with Ramel Bradley standing next to him. He would be too scared!
March 31st, 2008 at 10:08 am
2) I want to reiterate that I just made my opinion of Majok after watching that video, so dont take too much stock in me calling him a project
March 31st, 2008 at 10:09 am
I can’t see the video. Does it look like Neon Boudreau from Algiers Louisiana?
March 31st, 2008 at 10:11 am
I just wanted to add something about your hilarious analogy of the South bracket that you havent mentioned yet… “SOUTH: The most wide open of all the regions and the best one for a sleeper team to make a run” HAHA Out of all the Regions the SOUTH is the only one without One single upset…. just wanted to throw that out there. haha
March 31st, 2008 at 10:11 am
5) thats funny, yeah it kinda does, hope bliiy g doesnt have to do the things Nick Nolte did to get him though
March 31st, 2008 at 10:12 am
5) Honey you are getting a lot of overtime these days!
March 31st, 2008 at 10:13 am
I hope he is another Alleyne, IMHO Shagari would have been a very good low post presence, probably a 10 10 and 5 guy, not to mention the shots that he wold have altered. If this guy comes in as good as Shagari left as, I think we will have gotten a steal. That would take a lot of defensive pressure off of Patterson, and if we had foul trouble down low, stevenson/majok, or patterson/majok would be 2 great defensive players to have
March 31st, 2008 at 10:17 am
#8 zero overtime, sorry I did not tell you I went to dayshift.
March 31st, 2008 at 10:23 am
LOL! Poor guy
March 31st, 2008 at 10:23 am
What’s even worse is when they slap hands when the guy MISSES his free throw! Hope we can get Harrelson or this Majok
as we really need some size inside to let Patrick do his thing. GO CATS!
March 31st, 2008 at 10:32 am
10) I need your job or your boss.
March 31st, 2008 at 10:33 am
“I hope he is another Alleyne.”
You may have just won the yearly award for dumbest comment ever. Congrats.
March 31st, 2008 at 10:49 am
HAHAH THANKS!!! Just saying that Alleyne had a lot of potential and would have really helped us out if he had stayed. He did a lot of small things that were overlooked, block shots, alter shots, hit freethrows. He was not a great player, but if you look at my comment a little closer I said if he comes in as good as Alleyne was when he left I think we will have gotten a steal. I don’t think thats a dumb statement. Alleyne was 7′3 with an 8 ft wingspan, those guys dont come a dime a dozen, and to be honest he was fairly good for his size, and if I do remember he did a pretty good job shutting that guy up top down come tourney time.
March 31st, 2008 at 11:04 am
We dont need another bench rotter!
March 31st, 2008 at 11:18 am
I dont care what team you are …. there is a rule that you can only start 5 players, that means atleast 8 schollies are on the bench like it or not!!!! Some people on here kill me. Just cuz a guy doesn’t avg. 35 10 and 10 doesnt mean he is not a good player, and frankly there are no big men left in this class that will come in better than stevenson. I was simply saying that getting a player like Shagari would not be as bad a people think, b/c he did a lot of really good things…
March 31st, 2008 at 11:38 am
First of all, this guy is a completely different player than Shagari. How many times did anyone see Shagari do half the things this guy does in the video? Granted, he will not alter shots like Shagari, but he does have good length, would defend the perimeter much better than Shagari, appears to have a decent floor game (granted, I have never seen him play versus defense), and has decent work ethic. Shagari did one thing well, block shots. This guy seems to only be lacking in strength. I would not mind if he showed up on campus.
March 31st, 2008 at 11:40 am
Shagari would be in my top 10 of worst players to ever wear KY blue. Dude, he transferred to Manhattan and never even played. I could give you a laundry list of reasons he didn’t deserve to be here, but I’ll let this article do it for me:
Pick a reason why Shagari Alleyne, Kentucky’s 7’3” senior to-be, didn’t enjoy schoolwork. Maybe the small desks were uncomfortable, or the stares of classmates were distracting. Maybe he had nothing to wear. Or perhaps his alarm clock is broken.
Whatever the excuse is, it has proved to be his last. In late May, WLEX, a Lexington TV station, reported that Alleyne was ruled academically ineligible, and his status for next season was still up in the air. The news came on the heels of a season in which Alleyne was suspended at least twice for academic violations.
Then, the UK athletic department reported on June 7 that Shagari has been granted a release by Coach Tubby Smith, and will transfer, although his destination is still unknown. The question here for UK fans may be just this – who cares?
Alleyne is a player who has simply wasted an opportunity he probably should have never had in the first place. After three unimpressive years, he boasts career averages of 2 points and 1.3 rebounds per game. On a team desperate for rebounding last year, the tallest man in the conference played more than 10 minutes in a game only three times, and registered 13 DNPs. Think they’re clearing out a space for him in the UK Basketball Hall of Fame?
This is a guy who not only showed little remorse for his mistakes, but also that he can’t learn from them. He was suspended at least seven times in his UK career for academics. The UK media guides even listed a different major for him all three years he played.
He accomplished virtually nothing on the court to help the team, short of the occasional blocked shot or awkward dunk. He proved to be a sideshow for the UK fans, which cheered his entrance into the game as they would cheer a small child who makes a free throw in the halftime contest – more of a novelty than a player.
On top of that, he never seemed to be aware of his shortcomings. Clearly delusional about his own capabilities, he continued to talk about “leading my team to the Final Four”, and “being an impact player”, down to the end.
As far as his transfer, Shagari should have simply waved a white flag to announce his decision. He clearly couldn’t cut at UK, on or off the court, and simply took the easy way out. Tubby spoke about “cleaning house” after last season, and this seems like a good step for both parties. Shagari, despite his enormous size is not a Division I player. He would be better suited at a small D-II school, where his height could adequately cover for his lacking skills and mobility.
Meanwhile, UK is better served to forget Shagari ever donned a uniform in Lexington. He was said to be a project player when he arrived, and now he’s leaving as a project player, having never shown any sign of development. Given a golden opportunity to learn under one of the game’s greatest coaches, and play for a prestigious university, Shagari threw it away, and now is having to leave with his tail tucked beneath his legs. Here’s hoping he can find a good situation, or maybe even take some time off, just to get everything together.
And maybe get that alarm clock fixed.

Phillies over Tigers!
March 31st, 2008 at 11:57 am
2 points and 1.3 rebounds per game! That is hilarious. Definitely a 10/10/5 guy if I have ever seen one. Great article.
March 31st, 2008 at 12:00 pm
Bat Boys want to have fun too!
Bogut adlibbing the high fives is pretty damn funny, too!
March 31st, 2008 at 12:19 pm
19.) NICE ARTICLE….GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT. He transferred and sat out his senior year then entered the draft of 2007 that is why he didnt play for Manhattan. He didn’t get drafted but he got picked up by the sixers, and later waived, and now he plays ball in Europe. I would say the guy was pretty decent with those accolades. I am not claiming he was a superstar, just that I would not mind having him back.
P.S. dont give me the seven footer speech b/c there are plenty of 7 footers who are not good enough to go to the NBA or Europe….(WOO!)
March 31st, 2008 at 12:53 pm
When did Matt Jones play for the Bucks????
March 31st, 2008 at 12:57 pm
Alleyne was lazy. He had loads of potential but never realized it. You can’t instill a desire or work ethic into someone. The fire has to be there to begin with.
The history of Kentucky basketball is littered with players like that.
March 31st, 2008 at 1:18 pm
a) I remember a video of Miyako Williams that made him look impressive, so Mayok doesnt impress me yet!
b) I agree about the free throw situation! Never understood why everyone does that!
c) That bowling trick is unbelievable!
Well done Intern
March 31st, 2008 at 1:40 pm
Williams can play. Gillispie chooses not to play him for whatever the reason. The only time he got real playing time this season he got 19 minutes and pulled down 5 boards scored 4 points only 3 touches.
After that we never saw him again.
March 31st, 2008 at 1:40 pm
Those aren’t my facts, they belong to the guy who wrote the article, whom I cited at the end. Are you seriously defending that Shag was anything but horrible? He was an absolute joke, so much so that he merited an article written about him that only highlights all of his obvious downfalls. You are losing this arguement.
March 31st, 2008 at 1:47 pm
Don’t be ripping on my Nationals! I was at the game last night and it was a helluva great time. Well, it was a
helluva great time until I decided to pull a lower level, 90 year old Rupp Areana fan and leave in the 8th inning to beat
Metro traffic (the first time I’ve EVER left a sporting event early). So I didn’t even get to see the Zimmerman
shot to center field. Guess that’s what I get for leaving early.
Even if you don’t like the Nats the new ball park is really something to see. It’s absolutely awesome.
March 31st, 2008 at 1:57 pm
#27, you must be talking about a different Williams. Thw Williams I saw play was totally lost on offense and especially on defense….
#23, you can’t be comparing Woo and Alleyne. Woo actually played, had way more talent and could run up and down the floor at lease twice before Alleyne could make it back down to the defensive end….
March 31st, 2008 at 2:04 pm
When did you see him do that? He played in 5 games all year. None of them but 2-3 minutes in the closing seconds after the Central Arkansas game. He played well in the Central Arkansas game and didn’t play again.
March 31st, 2008 at 2:10 pm
Where is woo at??? Oh yeah I think he plays for quadruple a kentucky professional basketball team. I will agree to disagree but in my opinion Shagari Alleyne would have been a great asset last year, and I stick by my first statement in that would not mind having someone like him come off the bench for pat and perry next year. I would much rather have Hopson and Harrelson, but I would be fine with a defensive presence.
March 31st, 2008 at 2:19 pm
oh yeah 30.) Shagari Alleyne had almost 20 more blocks his sophomore season than orbzut did his entire career, he was also 60% from the field 70% from the line and had more points his sophomore year than orbzut had in any of his 4 seasons. Please stay out of this ‘preciate ya
March 31st, 2008 at 2:39 pm
Alleyne was absolutely terrible!!! Whoever defends him is stupid, it’s not like he finished his college career as a wildcat so there is no reason to defend him. Probably THE worst player to ever play for Kentucky that wasn’t a walk-on. This guy Majok actually looks like he has skill. He can dribble, dunk(and not just by putting his arms up over his head), and has a good mid-range shot. The video says NBA prospect for a reason. Shagari had the worst hands I have ever seen and had the basketball IQ of a 3rd grader. Majok has played all over the world and has experience because of that. He would have to adjust to the pace of the American style of basketball but I could see him being an impact player right away, whether it’s in the games or in practice. He would start over stevenson probably. I hope that if we get him, he doesn’t have any of the qualities of Alleyne. What a stupid statement. I am better than Shagari was when he ended his career!!!
March 31st, 2008 at 2:50 pm
hahaha I agree to disagree with all

March 31st, 2008 at 4:07 pm
I can not believe you actually think Shagari would have been an asset. What in his 3 years would lead you to believe he would have vastly improved his game? And for the guy defending Williams, please direct me to this video that was so impressive. We were clearly deficient in the post, but he still received 0 playing time. Is it because BCG didn’t like him? No, it is because he is slow, unathletic and not very skilled. We should all be grateful if he decides to take his services elsewhere. He was only honorable mention in his high school conference! His only other scholorship offers were from Jacksonville and American! What was Tubby thinking!!!!!!!

This blog has gone to hell Jones. For those of us who were here since Day 1 supporting this site it’s an embarrassment and utter disappointment to see it filled with idiots. It may not matter to you but you’ve lost this long time reader and contributer.

38.) See ya later. If you cant handle some constructive arguments then its not for you. Evidently my opinion does not count, and it sucks to have 7′3 in the middle with an 8 foot wingspan who shoots 70% from the line 60% from the field, and blocks 48 shots in 9 minutes per game. You guys are focusing on the wrong points here. I AM NOT CLAIMING SHAGARI WAS A SUPERSTAR, JUST THAT I THINK HE COULD HAVE HELPED US OUT AS A SENIOR AND THAT I WOULD NOT MIND IF AJOK CAME IN AT THE SAME LEVEL AS SHAGARI LEFT AT….. THATS MY OPINION AND I RESPECT YOURS SO PLEASE RESPECT MINE

He hardily got any playing time at Kentucky and sat out for Manhattan. I don’t what he is doing now since he didn’t get drafted last year…maybe living an ordinary life. Damn, does he even drive?
August 11th, 2008 at 10:54 pm
Last season Kenny George (7,7″ 360 lbs) seemed to have dominated the college scene. He has 8,5″ wingspan and not surprising can dunk LITERALLY
August 11th, 2008 at 10:56 pm
…without jumping off the floor. He was leading the nation in shot blocking and was actually pretty effective on offense too (although he scored most of his points from dunk lol). He’ s only 21 and seems to be all-around player than Alleyne right now so maybe he might get drafted by some team in the NBA.
