William Daniels’ Monday News and Views

by @ 12:44 am. Filed under Blue Blooded Opinions

william_daniels.jpg

Its a great day for birthdays today as Rene Descartes, Al Gore and Joseph Hyden all call today their birthday. However I chose instead to go with the great Mr. Feeney of Boy Meets World, William Daniels. Daniels has had a storied acting career that goes back nearly 50 years. He is known by some for his role in St. Elsewhere and various stage plays in the 60s and 70s. However if you speak with anyone of my generation, there are only two roles they could conceivably connect with Daniels….Kit from “Knight Rider” and “Boy Meets World.” As Kitt, Daniels was the ying to David Hassellhoff’s yang and helped many a young child attempt to have their parent’s Dodge speak back to them. Kitt was an icon of the 80s was a bit before my time….for me, “Boy Meets World” is directly in my wheelhouse. I remember Topanga and Ben Savage throughout their middle school and high school days, and followed their careers up through early college. Daniels in his role was the rare teacher who could teach middle school, then high school and then become a college professor….all so he could follow the gang throughout their career. Think Rick Pitino in Antoine Walker’s life and you have Mr. Feeley. But Daniels was a loving teacher and even as Ben Savage got uglier and Topanga got fatter, he never let them down. We salute you William Daniels and know that you will live on forever in the reruns….

To the news….

(1): With recruiting heating up over the next few weeks, most talk continues to center around Kentucky’s chances with Scotty Hopson. In an interview with Jeff Drummond tonight, Scotty confirmed that his final list of schools is Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi State and Cincinnati, a list that seems to have fluctuated over the last few weeks. Everyone I know close to the situation continues to tell me that Tennessee has the lead, Mississippi State has a puncher’s chance and that all parties are simply waiting in order to give UK the opportunity to make a play. The next three or four weeks should be huge in that regard and a Kentucky visit should come very soon. The importance of getting Hopson cannot be overstated. He is the only dominant scorer left in the Freshman class that is considering Kentucky. Getting him is huge…it takes Kentucky from another potential rebuilding year to a contender right away. He is that important.

(2): Ramel Bradley will be playing in the college all star game this week in San Antonio as part of the Final Four festivities. He will play in the event, which is televised on Thursday on ESPN, along with other Seniors such as Tennessee’s Chris Lofton. The last UK player to play in the game was Chuck Hayes, who if you will remember entered the three point contest for reasons I still do not understand. He came in last, but as always, you had to marvel at the guy’s effort. Be sure and check Ramel out on Thursday.

(3): The planned Gridiron Bash for Spring Practice has been cancelled at UK and all other schools around the nation. Deirks Bentley and Wynonna Judd were supposed to play at Commonwealth stadium the night before the Spring Blue-White game, however that event has been scheduled and put off until at least the fall. If one purchased tickets (and you know who you are), you can get a refund. To make up for the loss, Hubby, Woo and Bill Keightley will be hanging out in the parking lot playing “Free and Easy Down the Road I Go” while giving out free cans of Ski all day on that Saturday.

(4): Four #1 seeds make the Final Four, but I have to admit to finding the regionals pretty excruciating this weekend. Only one really good game (West Virginia-Xavier) and the story of Davidson’s run was truly the only thing redeeming about the entire affair. The problem this season was that really the best teams were substantially better than the rest of the teams, thus making parity only among teams ranked 7 and below. We likely however have a Final Four with the best four teams for the first time in many years and the games on Saturday should be wars…..although the non-stop Roy Williams vs Kansas stuff will make me want to throw something at my television.

(5): IU cant find a coach and I love it. I have said it before and I will say it again….for the purposes of HIRING COACHES in college basketball, right now there are only four elite jobs: UNC, UCLA, Kentucky and Kansas. Duke might be depending on what they do after Coach K, but that is it. As Indiana is finding out, if you go outside that group, taking a major coach from another BCS school becomes very tough. Add to that the fact that the IU AD is incompetent, the school is notoriously cheap, they are likely to go on probation and they are forced to wear those pants, and it may not be long before John Brady is introduced as the new guy at IU. Hire Mike Montgomery guys….it is the best you will do.

Ric Flair is done and I am sad. He had a great final match and I for one will miss him. Below is a classic interview to remember him by. More throughout the day, including some news on UK preferred walk-ons….

    Or second, for that matter.

Personally, the “First since Wooden” crap comparisons with Howland are going to drive me batty.

    Jordan Crawford to UK.

#4 Why not!!!! Bring on the IU guys! We’ll take any Gordon too, if he would like to stay in college. haha

i always have to buy as much as I can when I get my girlfriend’s grandma from carbondale, illinois

  10. Magloire the Professor Says:

Chuck Hayes entered the dunk contest, not the 3-point shootout. still not really his element, but he gave it a go.

never was a high-flyer, the Chuck Truck. how many of the guys who beat him in that contest are making Gs in The League, however?

  11. bcgobsession Says:

Ski shoutout? Matt, you must have it baaad for a central KY girl! I love Ski– I have to order it online & have it shipped to Texas. It mixes really well with a nice Bombay Saphire Gin. You could really impress her by serenading her with the KY Headhunters’ song “Doomas Walker” (?) “Slawburger, fries and a bottle of Ski– bring it on down for my baby & me”….. Seriously, don’t do that :)

  12. bcgobsession Says:

GoCats2010) Every now & then you can get SKI! at the little gas station across from Wallyworld on Nich Road (I believe it was a white building & there’s a fast food fried chicken restaurant across the side street (Popeyes maybe?). They don’t always have it, but I used to find it there on occasion; but don’t ask the clerks, they’ll have no idea what you’re talking about.

  13. HillbillySlim Says:

I hope we get Hopson and Majok. If we do then UK could possibly compete for a national title in o0!!!!!

  14. HillbillySlim Says:

    I meant 09.

  15. Splat Jones Says:

Here’s a classic Matt Jones prediction for you…

    2nd to last paragraph:

“Next year’s team will be an improvement from last year’s and the 08 team will be one of the nation’s best. And ultimately the reason why will be Tubby Smith.”

    From June 12 2006 - http://blog.kentuckysportsradio.com/?p=636

Granted this prediction came before Randolph Morris left for the NBA (March 23, 2007) but then… who thought Morris would stay 4 years?

Let’s look at what we did know at that time…

It came after Rajon Rondo had declared that he would hire an agent and leave for the NBA (April 4, 2006). It came after Shagari Alleyne was granted a release from UK (June 7, 2006).

It also came after news that Damian James had narrowed his list to 3 schools: Texas, Texas A&M, & Arizona (May 7, 2006).

It also came after Tyler Smith had committed to Iowa (April 27, 2006).

It also came way before the commitment of Patrick Patterson (May 15, 2007).

Matt… you want to plead your case? On these 2 points specifically:

    1. “…the 08 team will be one of the nation’s best”
    2. “…ultimately the reason why will be Tubby Smith”

WOW! That’s a pretty deep hole. Everybody else gets called out when they make incredibly rediculous statements (espeically ones that open up value of analysis such as this one), seems only fair.

  16. AlohaStateWildcat Says:

Gotta love the NCAA. What better way to get us hyped for football than to cancel all these great concerts and other festivities?

Are you Ski afficianados sure they still make it, and aren’t just selling what’s left from some trucks they found abandoned after the snow storm of ‘94?

William Daniels didn’t seem to age from ‘67 through the mid-90s, but then Cory and the gang seemed to finally have aged him a lot. But then again isn’t he like 80? Just think, he was old enough to play Dustin Hoffman’s father in the Graduate. He’s awesome, even though I had hardly heard of Boy Meets World until I met my wife, you young whippersnappers.

Please for the love of all that is just, UCLA must be stopped. Can’t the national guard be called in or something?I can’t stand to see Kevin Love and his moving picks and hacking ways any more. I want a Memphis-Kansas final, but at least if it is UNC-UCLA Tyler will educate Love on what talent inside is really about. I am no friend of UNC, but please… anybody but the Bruins.

  17. Behind Enemy Lines Says:

I’m pretty sure on Landon Slone as a Walk-on

  18. goukcatsgo Says:

Jones is at it again. Hayes was in the slam dunk competition, not the three point contest… DURRRR

    http://www.streetballin.net/clips/2005collegedunkcomp.html

  19. CAnTuckeeBoi Says:

18.) Point already made you are about 8 posts late. ‘Preciate ya
15.) Go home with your shenanigans you are probably the only person on here who would search back 2 years to find an argument. I made you feel stupid about the pg argument and now you feel like you have to redeem yourself with this crap. Please spare us all……

  20. jcb973 Says:

while we’re calling out errors…. John Brady was named the new coach at Arkansas State three weeks ago.
It was between him and Nolan Richardson….Not sure which one is worse.

  21. Mr Schwump Says:

It’s puzzling why some have Tn in the lead for SH.

  22. bcgobsession Says:

I greatly respect Hansbrough’s effort and basketball game and the
team around him is very unselfish as well. UCLA on the other hand
just makes me ill. They may be good, but they didn’t get to the FF
on their own– the refs may as well have suited up in those 60s
yellow and blue hues. The lesser of these 2 evils would be the
tarheels in that competition, otherwise call me a Jayhawk or a
tiger (for the next week ONLY)!

  23. bcgobsession Says:

Its actually more puzzling why Hopson would consider rocky top…

    :)

  24. TrueBlueBeliever Says:

The TV station in Hopkinsville had a special on yesterday about UHA and their season. Hopson and Edmonson were the guests. The host asked Ty Edmonson, just an honest opinion about which school he thought Scotty should attend, not UK but UT. I do think it was only because it’s the only school that Ty is on the same recruiting board as Scotty. But I thought it was interesting to hear him say that and see Scotty smile. I hope it’s not an indication of things to come.

  25. Matt Jones Says:

The Brady comment was a joke folks….

  26. Wolvezzz Says:

    15. Think about it for a second, Add Randolph Morris back then add Patterson & Lucas and it would have been a great team with a title chance.

  27. Matt Jones Says:

A healthy Meeks and Jasper, Randolph Morris, Bradley and Crawford…along with Patterson and Lucas and yes, I think they could have made a run this year.

But making that comment two years ago about a title run in two years is no different than the many (an dI am oneby the way) who believe we may be able to make a title run two years from now….you are trying to project something very difficult, far into the future.

  28. GoCats Says:

I feel old now that Matt Jones says that Knight Rider was before his time. I believe I grew up at a perfect time because when I was 10-12, I had Dukes of Hazzard, Knight Rider, The A-Team, The Incredible Hulk, Riptide, etc…. For a 10 year old boy it does not get any better than those shows!
I believe we can survive not getting Hopson if we can get Roderick Flemings. He seems like a similar style of player(I am sure not as good) but one story I saw says he likes playing defense which should put him the good graces of Coach Gillispie.

  29. GoCats Says:

    Matt,
I wouldn’t stress too much about it. I am a fan of Splat Jones but if he is looking up threads from 2 years ago he has some serious issues.

  30. achtermann_03 Says:

UCLA will not win the tourney they are not that good… and will lose.. but i hope we get Hopson and Majok… that would be great.,

  31. CAnTuckeeBoi Says:

I would love to get Hopson, but if he does go to UT I would love to see Miller work him twice a year.

  32. JKW1974 Says:

    Matt,

I agree Scotty is a great player, but getting him or not getting him will not be the thing that makes the difference next year. I think it is the getting of a signigicant post player to help Patterson out next year. If Western Illinois releases our prime prospect, we will be good to go. BTW, I hear they will do that….

  33. Mongolian STOMPER Says:

    WWWHHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  34. CAnTuckeeBoi Says:

Little known fact but Ric Flair was actually the biggest fan of former kentucky star Lukacz Orbzut …. it just came natural for him.

  35. bcgobsession Says:

No doubt that Scotty could make the difference in next season’s outcome, but I’m sure there are others that can be impact makers, as well. Just maybe not to the extent that Hopson would be. But, he won’t make or break us.

  36. ppatsweedman Says:

Im trying to stir this Jordan Crawford hype, but not getting any bites. If the Ellis and Basset transfering rumors are true I think he will surely leave. You would think Joe would be strongly encouraging him to play for BCG after they developed such a close relationship. But who knows?

  37. rbdono2 Says:

Matt, you may also remember Chuck in the slam dunk contest where he didn’t even slam one home. Every big guy can hit the occasional three ball, but you know if you can dunk the ball or not.

  38. CAnTuckeeBoi Says:

    36.) Not gonna happen

  39. Splat Jones Says:

    # 19 CAnTuckeeBoi - LOL… you quit the PG discussion when you didn’t respond with your analysis of what the perfect point guard numbers per game would be. You couldn’t do it as you were out of your league in the discussion. I gave information, you gave an opinion. Whenever you want to revisit it, you bring your numbers.

#27 Matt Jones - it would be fair to say “with a healthy Meeks and Jasper, Randolph Morris, Bradley and Crawford” in your argument, but at that time Patterson and Lucas weren’t in the equation. Also looking at that group now compared to UNC, Memphis, NC, Kansas, Louisville I think it’s clearly not the powerhouse that we all assumed it would be. Of those 5, Morris and Crawford had the most NBA potential coming in (and I’m talking complete games). But they both fumbled those opportunities through their development to not even be considered for the first round of the draft.

In all due respect, “…ultimately the reason why will be Tubby Smith”

Meeks and Jasper have a chance, but we hadn’t seen them play when you made this prediction. It’s only what we have seen out of these 4 star recruits since they came to UK that gives one the ability to predict they have special attributes.

Also, Bradley and Crawford were sophmores at the point you made this predicition and had not turned the corner. Neither were consistent enough to be projected as the nations best at that point and if anything one should have quetioned if they would even pan out as originally hoped when recruited.

Hell, what Morris had shown us at that point was that he wasn’t willing to give it his all and only had the NBA on his mind.

Regardless, any predicition made if it’s 2 days ago or 2 years ago should be taken to account if it’s made by someone who wants others to respect their opinion. Unless that is… your one of those guys.

Please, don’t consider this a reason to stop making predictions on your blog, they are fun to see and equally good to look at after the fact. But, who makes projections thinking no one will remember them?

  40. CAnTuckeeBoi Says:

No I responded and you quit so I’ll give you your second chance. Pick one who would you rather have??

A.FT 3P% REB Asst TO PPG Stl.

    B.FT 3p% REB Asst T.O PPG STL.

  42. Splat Jones Says:

#40 & #41 CAnTuckeeBoi - Here we go again with changing the subject to a trivial pursuit question.

I listed the per game stats that I would realistically prefer from my point guard.
    You didn’t.

That hasn’t changed. Until it does, you are making a choice to quit the discussion.

  43. CAnTuckeeBoi Says:

More important thing now man ….. Mr. Wildcat has passed ….. I call a truce and agree to disagree

  44. blue35 Says:

Scotty Hopson is not a good fit for UK. He is lazy and will end up IF he signs with UK transferring like Legion did. Seen him play alot and he has a bad attitude and will fit in great with the Vols. IMO

  45. FearofaBluePlanet Says:

with a healthy Meeks and Jasper, Randolph Morris, Bradley and Crawford

We probably need Rondo as well and equal development from PS.

    Rondo
    Crawford
    Meeks
    Patterson
    Morris

    with
    Bradley
    Jasper
    Stevenson
    Harris
off the bench would give us a chance as long as no one else had guys stay that went pro.

Keep in mind this is realisicly the type of talent it takes to win a championship and we still might not be odds on favorites. That’s how far off we are.
