Want further proof that the IU job is no longer relevant? CBS Sports reports that Tony Bennett spoke with the IU folks and doesnt want it. Indiana now must continue their search and move away from the guy that was clearly their first choice. IU is Alabama football….whether their fans want to accept it or not.

Mike Montgomery anyone?
March 30th, 2008 at 9:09 pm
Looks like it.
March 30th, 2008 at 9:11 pm
its so crazy how programs make a few wrong choices and suddenly are not relevant any more
March 30th, 2008 at 9:15 pm
Let’s look at this objectively, though:
He’s made enough money to set his family up for a generation or two, probably. The man’s going to be 82 in the summer and has already had an illustrious recording career. Why the hell does IU want to lure him into basketball now and how arrogant are they to think they can or should, especially at his age?

They went out of their way to get rid of Knight. Instead of just telling him that they were tired of being embarrassed by him, they made up some dumbass zero policy that they knew he couldn’t abide by. He was dead coach walking. Aside from a final four with Knights players, Mike Davis was a flop. Then this terrible mess they made with Sampson. I would say they made their own bed.
March 30th, 2008 at 9:40 pm
I don’t think we got the first guy we went after either. Not to say the Billy we did get isn’t the better Billy.
March 30th, 2008 at 9:42 pm
Ok, I grant the old gray mare ain’t what she used to be, but if IU is Alabama football, Washington State is Washington State football. Occasionally a Drew Bledsoe plays there, but even then no one cares. I think he would have been wise to just take the IU job.
March 30th, 2008 at 9:42 pm
Time to bring in an Indiana “Mr. Basketball,” Steve Alford. He did okay at Iowa and did nicely at New Mexico in his first year. He has no recruiting marks against him and is a beloved Hoosier.
March 30th, 2008 at 9:53 pm
Some speculation that Bennett might want the LSU job as his wife comes from Red Stick/Baton Rouge. He ruled out the Cal job as he said he wouldn’t go elsewhere in his conference. I like that policy - I wouldn’t want to coach two or three times a year against a former school I had loyalty to.
March 30th, 2008 at 10:08 pm
David Hobbs is open for the IU job.
March 30th, 2008 at 10:23 pm
You’re going to look pretty stupid for putting down Alabama football in a couple years.
March 30th, 2008 at 10:33 pm
With the money they had to throw at Saban (Michigan got Rich Rod for far less than I think even ‘Bama offered him) to get him to sell out the Dolphins what will justify “success’? I think he’s recruiting well enough that he’ll be able to squeeze out one Conference title in the next 4-5 years but being a consistent dominate force in the SEC? I don’t think so and then the fan hammer comes down. Saban’s hyperinflated salary combined with the rabidity of the ‘Bama fanbase is bad news for Saban.
And when it gets bad in ‘Bama it gets real bad. Those people are insane.

what a game b/t Braves and Nats
March 30th, 2008 at 10:48 pm
Same could be said about UK. If I’m not mistaken they have been to a Final Four since we have. Careful throwing stones there we aren’t out of our glass house just yet.
March 30th, 2008 at 10:50 pm
#15 - game sucked!
#8 - I kinda agree. I think IU is still relevant. We didn’t get our #1 (and possibly #2), but we’re all glad with who we got. I’m sure the same will go for IU. Everyone wants Alford, but I can’t imagine he would be the best IU could get.
March 30th, 2008 at 10:51 pm
#16, I don’t think we’re as relevant as we were a few years back. However I also believe we’re making great strides to get back there. We’ve been bashing Duke the past week or so on here, however they’ve done more than us over the last 10 years.
March 30th, 2008 at 11:18 pm
Matt, you’re exactly right. IU fans and the such should be shocked that Tony Bennett turned this job down…..Washington State basketball has NEVER been relevant up until the past two years (most of the players he used to build the program are leaving, so it’s not like he has a huge reason to stay). And maybe UK basketball didn’t get their first choice, but the Billy D was coming off 2 national championships and had the NBA in his sights. (Does everyone forget his soiree with the Orlando Magic???). Mr. Barnhardt gets Billy G to sign a “contract” in about 4 hours time, IU can’t even get the head coach of Washington State (WASHINGTON STATE!?!?!) to sit down for an interview!
Alabama Football is probably an unfair comparison, Saban will get those guys going. I perhaps liken a comparison to Notre Dame Football?
This is great news for the Cats though….makes it more likely that one of our SEC East bretheren (Pearl, Stallings) takes the job.

16 I’m a braves fan but that was a good ending to the first game in their new stadium.

Me too 20 I still wish they wouldve won
March 31st, 2008 at 12:00 am
Bring Bobby Knight back. I am at an age where I can’t remember what I did last week, but I can remember in detail the game that Knight slapped the neck of Joe B. Hall. A riot almost erupted. Heck, I say that IU insist in the contract that Knight throw a couple chairs. That’ll get the Hoosiers back in contention.
March 31st, 2008 at 12:02 am
a possible reason could be the impending investigation and probation. nobody wants to coach during probation era when you cant get a recruit to commit and likely will get fired in 2-4 years. that would just bring his stock down. maybe he has an eye on the possible arizona opening.
what do u guys think?
March 31st, 2008 at 12:04 am
i wish they got him. it takes certain kids to play his boring defensive style. not the kids we like to see running and gunning in blue and white.
March 31st, 2008 at 12:07 am
I bet Jordan Crawford transfers to UK. Any takers?
March 31st, 2008 at 12:14 am
#23 What Arizona opening? Neither Paterno nor Lute are going to voluntarily retire!
March 31st, 2008 at 12:19 am
It disturbs me to see comments like this about IU. Of the schools out there the ones that resemble UK the most in many aspects are IU and KU. Both UK and those two schools have relatively limited recruiting when it comes to in-state possibilities. Each of the three also has rabid fans that will follow their team anywhere and are not particularly “fair weather” fans. I hate to see IU taking such a hit, even if they are a rival.

#23 nepalibabu - That’s better analysis than Matt gave.
Not that Georgia is even worth discussing as a basketball tradition, however George Felton took over than probation depleated program and look how he was almost shown the door. At Georgia! Felton is the best they will get in a long time and he’s doing things the right way yet if he hadn’t won the SEC tourny he would have seen pink. What a shame.
These schools do this to themselves. I have little sympathy for Indiana. Their stock lowered when they cut ties with the General.
March 31st, 2008 at 12:33 am
I remember when the Kentucky/Indiana game was THE game of the season.
March 31st, 2008 at 12:38 am
27) I can’t believe you think IU has limited recruiting in state! They have just let a lot of guys get away. They have brought in a few too though. Think about the names: Dominic James, Eric Gordon, Mike Conley Jr., Sean May, Zach Randolph, Greg Oden, Luke Zeller, Tyler Zeller, Angel Garcia, Scott Martin, Jeff Teague, ETwaun Moore, JuJuan Johnson, Robbie Hummel, Luke Harangody, Josh McRoberts, Armon Basset….That’s a pretty good list of names for the last six years and there were several four stars I didn’t mention.
March 31st, 2008 at 12:46 am
Wow, I hate Digger Phelps and his friggin’ hi-liter ties.
March 31st, 2008 at 2:45 am
27 I go to Wake Forest and I love it when Teague gets mentioned with great recruits because he wasn’t even mentioned on any awards list besides the ACC Freshman team. From January 29th until the end of the season he scored 19 a game. He’s going to be making headlines next year, I guarantee.
