[Moderated by Matt Jones, Drew Franklin and Tyler Thompson]
It’s not often that earning a commitment from the #2 player in the country – and snatching him out from under Rick Pitino’s nose – won’t kick off your News and Views post, but this happens to be one of those instances. Just after noon on Friday, Kentucky junior Patrick Patterson will take the stage one last time in Lexington to address the media and presumably announce his intentions to enter the NBA Draft, ending one of the most storied and beloved careers in Wildcat history. Since giving his commitment to the Wildcats after famously comparing and contrasting the various schools on his list, Patterson came to Kentucky as a McDonald’s All-American whose game was as much of a need of anyone in modern history and, ironically, left as more of a luxury than we ever expected.
Make no mistake about it. Patrick Patterson’s Wildcat career was outstanding, averaging 16.1 points and 8.2 rebounds per game in three seasons in Lexington. But, in a program that has seen plenty of great players come and go, Patrick Patterson joined an elite club of legends at a school that doesn’t just give that title away and, incredibly, did it during one of the roughest patches in program history. Kentucky fans were going to root for Patrick Patterson no matter what. But, through toughness and undeniable class, he made us all love him and he found himself with a special place in the hearts of all Wildcat fans.
Despite growing up only an two hours from Lexington, Patrick wasn’t necessarily a “local kid”, but he treated the program with the respect and the reverence that everyone of us who grew up with a hoop and a Big Blue Dream prays that Wildcat players will. When his freshman season ended early due to an ankle injury and he faced the media while fighting back tears, we felt the pain like it was our own. When he chose to come back for a chance at the NCAA Tournament despite a difficult sophomore season and with a coaching change and a number of big-name players coming in, we proudly admired his heart like he was our son. And it wasn’t out of coincidence. Patrick Patterson made us all feel like he was one of us – passionate, determined and damn proud to call himself a Kentucky Wildcat.
So, when he sits down one final time today, likely sitting between his two proud parents, and addresses his Big Blue Family, soak it all in. When he tells you how much he loves UK and Lexington, know that he means it. Patrick Patterson’s career at UK wasn’t about points or rebounds. It wasn’t about adding range to his jump shot or even bridging the gaps between three coaches. It was about the pride he took in restoring the prestige and class to UK’s program and playing every play like he was a 10-year old in his driveway wearing a faded Jamal Masburn jersey (and giving Fake Gimel’s wife a ride home). With John Calipari in town, there will be plenty of talented big men that will fill the spot Patterson filled in the lineup. However, it’s tough to imagine anyone truly filling the sizable shoes #54 is leaving behind.
So, with Patterson’s departure in mind, I went to the KSR archives to see what I could find and, not surprisingly, if you search “Patrick Patterson”, you receive 1,087 posts. Patrick has sort of been a big deal around here. My original intentions were to go through all 76 pages of posts and find the best, but I thought that might beat you down a bit. So, instead, let’s take a trip down memory lane to the early days of KSR and the saga that was “Patterson and Lucas”. Sidenote: Props to “Tom Gray” for being the first person to ask if there was any news on Patterson and Lucas. Enjoy.

What a great Cat.
April 23rd, 2010 at 12:54 am
Read this article Goodman wrote back when Patterson committed
http://community.foxsports.com/goodmanonfox/blog/2007/05/16/Patterson_News_Conference_Laughable
“Remember, this is Patrick Patterson. He’s a solid piece of Kentucky’s rebuilding process. He’ll be fortunate to ever step foot on an NBA court.”
Whoops
April 23rd, 2010 at 12:56 am
Seriously, is their any news on Lucas?
April 23rd, 2010 at 12:56 am
Great post! I remember the exact moment at work when I learned PPatt committed to the Cats. I wish him the best in his future and whether he goes or stays, he lead by example and IS truly “one of a kind.” Thanks, Black Kool-Aid!!!
April 23rd, 2010 at 12:56 am
We will miss you Pat. You will be forever adored by UK fans for the rest of eternity. GOD BLESS and good luck in the NBA
April 23rd, 2010 at 12:57 am
As the old ancient wise song once said:
“He’s rocking the house, he’s rocking the rim, he’s blocking the shots, he’s making the shots!
He’s perfect! He’s perfect! HE’S PERFECT PATTERSON!”
I couldn’t have put it better.
I will really miss Ppatt. My favorite player hands down!
April 23rd, 2010 at 12:57 am
I love the amount of spam on all those old links.
April 23rd, 2010 at 1:02 am
54 should be retired already!!!
April 23rd, 2010 at 1:08 am
I don’t think there was a recruiting race that was more covered or talked about.
April 23rd, 2010 at 1:08 am
Favorite player of all time. He truly is a great person.
April 23rd, 2010 at 1:09 am
Patterson will always be loved in Lexington. Unless, of course, he one day becomes head coach at UofL.
April 23rd, 2010 at 1:09 am
Patterson, you are the MAN!!!
April 23rd, 2010 at 1:09 am
I just want to say that I also remember where I was. I had a friend text me since this was before the smart phone era.
April 23rd, 2010 at 1:12 am
Patrick is the greatest.
April 23rd, 2010 at 1:13 am
Patterson is just a great person.
April 23rd, 2010 at 1:20 am
Chandler Parsons with STERLING credentials??
April 23rd, 2010 at 1:24 am
SAVEUK is a fraud…..he steals info on here and post on his website as if he has the info and never gives props to KSR or Matt Jones
April 23rd, 2010 at 1:28 am
i enjoyed reading those old posts but especially the comments lol we treated bcg like he was god then, and i saw numerous times where people thought aj stewart was going to be the next big think at uk! haha how things have changed in 3 years but thanks patterson for saving us because without you, there is no calipari, john wall, or demarcus cousins here at uk. you were a great role model on and off the court and i have no doubt a nba team will be getting a steal by drafting you with your potential! hopefully they see how far you have come in just 3 years, and 2 of them being with a crazy coach! good luck!
April 23rd, 2010 at 1:31 am
We will miss you Patrick. It’s hard for me to imagine someone else in a #54 UK jersey now. I am sure Coach K will even shed a tear for you today. Oh wait … never mind … he tried that once already.
April 23rd, 2010 at 1:31 am
24, lol, SaveUK takes NO information from here
April 23rd, 2010 at 1:34 am
man, I’m gonna miss that guy
April 23rd, 2010 at 1:37 am
I can’t believe I’m saying this, but THANK YOU Coach Gillispie! THANK YOU for making Patterson a Wildcat! He’s a class act that always represented the State and University with pride and sportsmanship! Patterson will go down as a WILDCAT LEGEND!!!
April 23rd, 2010 at 1:39 am
I don’t know where SaveUK gets his info. But my info is solid. The UK staff believes 100% that Jones will commit to UK. They really wanted him to do it today(Friday) but because Terrence Ross has not made his decision yet the press conference was set for the 30th. The staff is also now unsure on where Leslie sits with them. They really tried to get both Jones and Leslie and felt confident they could land them both. However, Leslie wants to go to a place where he will start from day one and play 30+ minutes. It all depends on if Leslie thinks splitting time at UK will be more beneficial to him than starting and playing most of the minutes at NC State.
April 23rd, 2010 at 1:41 am
Patrick Patterson’s tears cure cancer. Too bad, Patterson never cries.
April 23rd, 2010 at 1:43 am
Why didn’t you link this entry?
“Many of those of us who spend time following UK basketball recruiting saw some good news in the story that Patrick Patterson, a 6′6″ forward from Hunington, West Virginia is visiting campus this weekend. For me, the news is not necessarily great because of Patterson as a player (which I am still skeptical about), but because it showcases a desire by the Kentucky staff to become more proactive in the recruiting process”

As somebody born in the late 80′s, who grew up on kentucky basketball during its power years of the 90′s….I can still say with complete honesty that ppat was my favorite kentucky player ive seen during my lifetime. No disrespect intended to my other favorites; mashburn, delk, anderson, padgett, turner, prince, bogans, crawford, etc, etc, etc, Patterson stands head and shoulders above them. His combination of skill, class, humility, and love for the team was unsurpassed. I’m not a huge NBA fan, but whatever team gets ppat will instantly become my favorite. I wish him the best of luck in his future.
April 23rd, 2010 at 1:49 am
Thank you PP. I have so much to say. But thank you for believing in our program when nobody else did. Thank you for being the guy you are. And thanks to your mom and dad who clearly love you and the university as much as any parents have. You’ll never be forgotten.
April 23rd, 2010 at 1:53 am
Congrats on a great career PPat! You were a savior when you arrived.
On a side note, Terrence Jones will make the call tonight! Mark it down people.
April 23rd, 2010 at 1:59 am
Congrats Patrick! At least you waited until you had your education before you shut that door completely! I wish you the best in your career!
April 23rd, 2010 at 2:00 am
He truly was. I’m really going to miss him.
April 23rd, 2010 at 2:10 am
yeah, 37. looks like Matt missed the boat on that one.
April 23rd, 2010 at 2:13 am
a lot of those old posts remind me of what terrible recruiters Tubby and his at UK staff were.
April 23rd, 2010 at 2:26 am
WHAS-11 just aired an interview with Teague’s high school coach and he said that Teague is already having second thoughts about choosing UK and will take some time to reconsider. Unbelievable! The damn press conference was this morning for Christ sake!!
April 23rd, 2010 at 2:27 am
#38 Jay….I agree with you completely. I just hope he reads this and sees how much he has meant to the fans here.
April 23rd, 2010 at 2:39 am
Any News & Views?
April 23rd, 2010 at 2:43 am
45…..deal with it…..he chose Kentucky,,,not loserville…
April 23rd, 2010 at 2:43 am
I don’t know what the requirements are to have your jersey in the rafters of Rupp (time-wise), however I feel that these requirements not be applicable to P-squared and his #54 should be erected at the first game of next year and that during each announcement of our starting line-up there is a moment taken when the lights dim and a single spotlight shine upon his jersey. Patrick has been a testament to himself, his family, UK, and basically all that is good in the nature of a human. There is no player, NBA or college, that I respect more than him. Truly a big bright blue star!!!
April 23rd, 2010 at 2:54 am
Now that Pat has put his time in can someone please get him a decent UK hat???
April 23rd, 2010 at 2:54 am
I remember growing up and playing ball in the driveway and acting like I was Kenny Walker or Winston Bennett. If Pat was around back then it would have been him!! Thanks for the memories Pat you are truly one of the immortals!!!
April 23rd, 2010 at 2:55 am
45) Really! Are you really trying this now. Funny how an interview with his coach aired so late and no one else knows about it. Come on man, just deal with it. He is a cat
April 23rd, 2010 at 2:56 am
Pitino should have landed a commitment from Teague. It must be the foul play of the Iceman. I’m telling you I’ve been chasing this Iceman for years and everytime I get close, I hit another dead end. There is no other explanation for what happened today with Teague. It has to be that damn Iceman!! I’m telling you it must be the Iceman damn it!!!
April 23rd, 2010 at 2:57 am
Which way is Lucas leaning? Him, Pat, and Legion could really do work this year.
April 23rd, 2010 at 2:57 am
53) Call Eddie Murphy. He will have your back on that!!
April 23rd, 2010 at 3:00 am
Going to miss you Pat Pat.

You’ll always be a a great Wildcat.

April 23rd, 2010 at 3:12 am
How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll pop?
April 23rd, 2010 at 3:16 am
61 – don’t be an a$$
April 23rd, 2010 at 3:20 am
I remeber watching the presser while at work and I yelled out(while wearing my headphones) and everyone turned around and looked at me like I was crazy. You could say he re-started the madness.
April 23rd, 2010 at 3:23 am
#62
” It takes 69 ”
Giggity giggity goo!
April 23rd, 2010 at 3:26 am
I remember PPat’s annoucnement like it was yesterday. I was living in Brooklyn, NY at the time while studying for the NY & NJ bar exams. That afternoon I was sitting in a Starbucks coffee shop in Manhattan near the Empire State building and was using a wireless network to surf the internet. When I read the headline that PPat had chosen Kentucky i was overjoyed. I vividly remember how happy I was then and how it fooled me into thinking things would get better under Gillispie.
April 23rd, 2010 at 4:01 am
Any News & Views tonight? When is the Jai Lucas presser?
April 23rd, 2010 at 4:40 am
#68, My sources say you are just making that up.
April 23rd, 2010 at 4:46 am
thanks for picking UK PP. I know your first two years sucked..but hopefully u enjoyed the last year. Billy Gillispie was an idiot and I’m glad he was gone for your last year. Good luck in the NBA and I hope you make big CASH!
April 23rd, 2010 at 5:16 am
excellent, excellent, excellent – both article and man who represented kentucky in a manner that made us all proud to hail from the bluegrass state.
April 23rd, 2010 at 6:12 am
61 – I see you changed your name after your Teague prediction didn’t work out so well. Way to be a man!
April 23rd, 2010 at 6:16 am
45. Did you WHAS’follow-up segment on Pitino? He’s going to the Globetrotters and taking Siva with him.
April 23rd, 2010 at 6:17 am
Let’s try again.
45. Did you watch WHAS’follow-up segment on Pitino? He’s going to the Globetrotters and taking Siva with him.
April 23rd, 2010 at 7:02 am
One More Yaer!!!!!!!
April 23rd, 2010 at 7:11 am
Ppat, you will always be loved and have a very special place among the Big Blue Nation! We wish you all the best and have thoroughly enjoyed your time as a Wildcat. God bless and good luck in all that you do (and come back to Lexington as often as you can!).
April 23rd, 2010 at 7:36 am
Love ya Pat. Gonna enjoy watchin you in the NBA.
April 23rd, 2010 at 7:53 am
We should honor him by retiring his jersey in the first game of the season next year. He stuck with us through some horrible years and the program owes him more than any player in modern history. He (and his family) has always been the epitome of class and I hope his playing days last for a very long time in the league. Goodbye PPat – You will always be a CAT to BBN. Thanks for the memories and keeping us from a losing season for 2 years (despite all of Billy G’s efforts).
April 23rd, 2010 at 7:54 am
Four things I learned in the KSR archives this morning:
1. Marc Maggard used to write on this site
2. He called Olek Czyz “a beast”.
3. He said Mike Williams was skilled offensively and would contribute immediately.
4. He said Michael Sanchez would be a better player than Patrick Patterson in the long run.
April 23rd, 2010 at 7:57 am
Patterson will always be remembered as the…??…???…guyyyy whoooo was a good post player for a season and a half, and was turned into a lottery pick by the next coach? He didnt have an impact in bringing big time players in, that was Cal. I love PPat but I think his biggest accomplishment at UK is graduating in three years, that he should be commended for. The only thing he did on the court was keep UK’s head just barely afloat until the reinforcments came. Good player no doubt, but I think his time here was overblown because of how bad the team was. He’s a hard worker and I think that is his greatest asset.
April 23rd, 2010 at 7:58 am
I want to thank you Pat for bringing us back at our lowest time and believing in us when nobody else did. You are legend and will always be one of my favorite Wildcats. Good luck in the NBA.
April 23rd, 2010 at 8:01 am
Class!
April 23rd, 2010 at 8:03 am
Thanks for hanging with UK for three years, Pat Patterson. I hope that the future brings you nothing but happiness. You will always be remembered as one of the best UK Wildcats.
April 23rd, 2010 at 8:03 am
Thanks Pat
April 23rd, 2010 at 8:07 am
The absolute heart and soul of the program over the last three years and definitely a Wildcat legend. PURE CLASS!!
Thanks for everything PPat!!
April 23rd, 2010 at 8:09 am
Patterson is already legendary. Thanks Patrick!
It took me awhile to remember what my screen name was before Matt banned me for the first time! Ah, the memories!
April 23rd, 2010 at 8:10 am
Thanks Patterson family for making these last few yrs so memorable!
April 23rd, 2010 at 8:11 am
70- Was Patrick hired as the coach last year or something?? Because I thought Cal brought us back? Maybe I’ve been asleep the last year or so.
April 23rd, 2010 at 8:14 am
Patrick Patterson = all you could want in a player … go forth and prosper young man, unless of course you want to stay and have a golden idol sculpted in your honor (i kid i kid)
April 23rd, 2010 at 8:14 am
Patrick will be legendary in terms of face of the team, on and off the court. Lets not be mistaken here, as painful as it is to say, his contributions on the court are about middle of the road interms of Kentucky history.
April 23rd, 2010 at 8:14 am
thanks pat. you’re the best! have fun in the nba and spend your money wisely. oh, and now it’s time to go help cal get jones, ross, and leslie… oh and wroten and miller. thanks again pat.
April 23rd, 2010 at 8:17 am
#79 “middle of the road.” WOW. hope you don’t get pimp-smacked too hard by us fans for that one, bro.
April 23rd, 2010 at 8:21 am
Man, just like it was yesterday.
April 23rd, 2010 at 8:24 am
If our beloved Patrick Patterson leaves us tommorrow, we all wish hiom the best in life and in the NBA. He’s the greatest player you could ask for. I think we need to retire his jersey after all he has done for the program if he leaves today. God bless you Pat-pat.
April 23rd, 2010 at 8:28 am
I’m just gonna keep responding to other posts by their number even though there will be deletions which render MY posts completely impotent. (That’s what she said!)
But I will NOT use another commenter’s name! It just makes too much damn sense and we can’t have that on the internets!
April 23rd, 2010 at 8:28 am
When you look in the dictionary and see the word, Class Act, you will see a picture of Patric Patterson along with his parents. Thank you Patrick for everything that you have done for this program. You have been one of the favorites of the program of all time and that’s not an easy accomplishment for the Big Blue Nation. Good Luch in your new endeavor and hopefully, we will see you back in Lexington soon….
April 23rd, 2010 at 8:35 am
Thanks Pat! You are one of the nicest, classiest kids to ever wear the blue and white. I can’t think of once incident in 3 years that you didn’t handle with class. Your parents did an outstanding job raising you and we are forever indebted to you and them. Whatever team drafts you is getting and outstanding young man and a damn fine player. I will always be a fan of yours. Good luck and Go Big Blue!
April 23rd, 2010 at 8:36 am
#84/’Clueless’ – tell your mom i appreciate the bj in the bathroom at jock’s last night. gotta be in the top 100 of all my received bj’s…
April 23rd, 2010 at 8:38 am
Thanks Patrick for all your hard work on and off the court! Through the good times and the bad, you were always a pleasure to watch play the game. A consummate teammate, who made those around you better, you will always be one of our favorites!
April 23rd, 2010 at 8:42 am
Patterson ranks among the greatest to ever wear the uniform. That is more than enough and a job well done. Go get your money, PPat!
April 23rd, 2010 at 8:43 am
If PPat were to come back, I would make love to him!!
April 23rd, 2010 at 8:44 am
Hey Clueless, don’t be a dick.
Would we rather have:
1) Pat come back and us miss out on Jones (maybe Ross) and Leslie?
2) Pat go and us land Jones (maybe Ross) and Leslie?
April 23rd, 2010 at 8:45 am
This press conf. started my love affair with KSR(no homo)
April 23rd, 2010 at 8:46 am
PPat is the type of player we need every year. I wish wwe could get one more season with him. He deserves a title…
April 23rd, 2010 at 8:49 am
So is it for sure that he is leaving? Or just the probable assumption.
April 23rd, 2010 at 8:51 am

April 23rd, 2010 at 8:56 am
Patrick’s arrival sort of reminds me of the Jamaal Mashburn story. A man amongst boys arrives on campus and leaves the program in much better shape than when he departs.
Thanks PP!
The only thing you could do better is to get up to that mic today and announce you are staying one more year! You are one class act, young man! You will succeed in life.
April 23rd, 2010 at 8:58 am
Thanks Patrick. You are a gifted athlete with a humble disposition. Rare talents and even rarer attitude. You are a credit to the organization.
April 23rd, 2010 at 9:01 am
92. Me too. Started following the site about 2 months before this. With the Jai/Pat circus. Pat is great, and so is this site. Thanks, and I wish the best success for both.
April 23rd, 2010 at 9:05 am
So I was doing a quick check of rivals ‘top 150′ list (nice to see #1 and #2 with Kentucky next to them). I did not see our favorite Twitter user, Tony Wroten listed. Does anyone know why? I thought I’d heard he was one of the top pg’s in the 2011 class.
April 23rd, 2010 at 9:13 am
RETIRE #54!!! PPat is all you want in a role model for young people on and off the court. You can’t ask for a better guy to represent the program.
April 23rd, 2010 at 9:13 am
4 Reasons Pat should come back.
1. Education – He has a chance to do something rare. That is go into the NBA with a Masters Degree. To steal a quote from Knight, his mind will last him a lot longer than his legs.
2. Legend – He already ranks up there with one of the greatest and most beloved Cats of all time. Coming back would IMO instantly move him into all time most beloved wildcat status. The man who put his school before money twice. That enough to do it.
3. The Record – Patrick needs 575 points to become the all time scoring leader for Kentucky. If he scored his average from his past two years he would break the record. This again would make him the greatest and most beloved Cat of all time.
4. A Championship – Why not try? It’s something he could never have a chance at again if he goes pro.
I know players often cite the potential for injury as a factor for not coming back. But the Pattersons are intelligent people. I’m quite sure they already have or would know to get an insurance policy on Patrick. College players who are guaranteed 1st round picks do it all the time. And plus, when was the last time you ever heard of a career ending injury to a college player that prevented them from going to the NBA?
April 23rd, 2010 at 9:16 am
102 – scout has Wroten at #6
April 23rd, 2010 at 9:23 am
102- YOu didn’t see him because you didn’t look at #9
April 23rd, 2010 at 9:23 am
What in the world is Beisner talking about with this tweet?
“Kentucky is on their third coach since my last dentist visit. This could get very ugly this morning.”

@107-Maggie, I’m thinking Beisner is nervous about his dentist appt. Perhaps it’s been since the Tubby Era. Hopefully

114-Thanks! I had a major panic attack-I get it now. Pronouns should not be tossed around lightly in coaching context.

Hey Matt why don’t you dig back through those archives to Cal’s last year at Memphis when you repeatedly based him and his underhanded tactics and wondered how Memphis could stand to have such a scum bag representing the university.
April 23rd, 2010 at 9:55 am
Matt, you do a really good job at KSR. I began looking at KSR when John Wall arrived because I am from Raleigh NC too. You are very informative with the players, recruits, and coaches. Because of KSR, as well as Cal. and John, well, even Patterson, I have grown to really like UK. Cal. was the best thing to happen to UK. Now, i find myself reading KSR daily, and I will continue to follow UK for a long time. I am interested to see how John Wall is going to impact the NBA. I think since Cal. has some really good outside shooters next year, along with Enes, never heard of Enes until I read KSR, UK should win it all next year.
Thanks for keeping the fans in America and the world informed about UK.

Here is a vid of adonis thomas, #2 ranked forward behind gillie according to some. Kentucky recently offered him. Imagine him on the wing with gil.

I was at a hostel in Edinburgh, Scotland. I looked through a glass window to see my friend violently hang up the phone and run through the front doors. He was out of breath and a little crazy-eyed. I said, “What?”
“We got Patrick Patterson!” He said. We both grabbed each other by the shoulders and proceeded to literally jump up and down in the middle of the lobby, yelling nonsense the entire time. We scared the crap out of the woman behind the counter. My explanation to her went as follows.
“Sorry. It’s just, well, we’re from Kentucky, and the University there has a very popular basketball team that we are obsessed with, and they just signed one of the best players in the country to play for them. It might be like if your favorite soccer team signed a great player.” I looked at her hopefully.
“So,” she said, “It would be like if Henrik Larsson came back to play for Celtic?”
“Yes,” I said. “Exactly. Imagine how you would have reacted if you were halfway across the globe when you got that news.” Her eyes just went all dreamy and we moved on.
Sports are awesome.
