I am not one to harp on all that is bad about announcers….make fun of them, yes….but there is no need to get angry about it. Pontificating is what these men and women are paid to do and the fact that many of them are not good at it, does not mean that they are awful human beings. But at times people are so bad that you cant help but get angry….enter Seth Davis. Seth (a former Dukie) has one job and that is it….do the halftime show for college basketball. It isnt rocket science and it isnt that taxing. Work 12 weekends a year, do the games, have a smug look on your face and go home. While no one I know can even FATHOM why Seth has the job, the fact is that he does…..so one would assume he could do it and rest on his undeserved laurels for the rest of the calendar year.
However yesterday Seth proved to us that he cant even handle the minimal task he is given. With only two games on tap at the 1 o clock hour, Seth showed us that he DIDNT EVEN WATCH THOSE GAMES. Speaking at halftime of the UK-Georgia game, you likely heard Seth say that for Kentucky to win, Ramel Bradley was going to have to “step up” in the second half. Of course if Seth had watched the game, he would have known that Ramel was knocked out in the first half, in the locker room attempting to know the calendar and would most certainly not be “stepping up” anything. What did Seth do to come up with this brilliant insight? He most certainly got a stat sheet….saw Ramel hadnt scored….and then gave his moronic opinion….proving the Mark Twain theory that sometimes it is best to keep your mouth shut and let the world think you may have a clue.
Seth Davis you are possibly the luckiest guy in the world to have a television job. He didnt play, he didnt coach and he isnt even entertaining. The least he can do is actually watch the games he is covering. But hey, I am sure he had something better to do….

bravo, matt.
this needs to be plastered EVERYWHERE to embarrass the hell out of a guy that
(1) doesn’t know the **** what he’s talking about
(2) needs to actually do some work every now and then
February 3rd, 2008 at 2:54 pm
I’m cheering for UNC this Wed…sad story.
…Abe Lincoln said that bit about “opening one’s mouth and removing all doubt”…not Sam Clements.
February 3rd, 2008 at 3:20 pm
He probably only got the job because he is from Duke.
February 3rd, 2008 at 3:33 pm
Seth does as good of a job as announcer as Matt Jones does as a wannabe journalist… insight(n.) > incite (v.)
February 3rd, 2008 at 3:39 pm
careful (5), i got reamed last time i tried to help matt gramatically
February 3rd, 2008 at 3:46 pm
5-so why do you come on this site? To teach English?
February 3rd, 2008 at 3:54 pm
The actual quote from Seth Davis was “For Kentucky to win, Ramel Bradley needs to get going”. As stated, he obviously unaware that Smooth had the flu AND had been knocked out of the game.
February 3rd, 2008 at 3:59 pm
No, I come on this site to get current news about UK athletics. I do not want to read about Seth Davis erring on television. Especially from a writer who’s own work is chock-full of errors.
February 3rd, 2008 at 4:04 pm
Why should he work any harder? He’ll have his contract renewed regardless.
February 3rd, 2008 at 4:25 pm
And then you got J. Bilas on record that Kentucky has no shot at the tournament unless they win the SEc tournament. Where did he go to school, …oh thats right.
February 3rd, 2008 at 4:26 pm
9. I bet people try to hide when they see you walking down the hall towards them.
February 3rd, 2008 at 4:28 pm
(11) bilas really got pissed off during that segment, making that weird face and saying ” ‘well, if their early season losses are discounted then our early season wins should be discounted’ ”
he’ll be eating his words. kentucky does not *have* to win it’s tournament. if we go undefeated but then lose in triple OT in the SEC champ, will they keep us out? hell, no
February 3rd, 2008 at 4:30 pm
11 I thought he meant at this very moment. After the next four weeks play out, it hopefully will be an entirely different story. I like Bilas, he’s 90% better than anyone else at being both knowledgeable and limiting his bias. Plus, he didn’t graduate from the “talk louder and pound the desk or point a finger so it seems like I know what I’m talking about” school of broadcasting.
Seth Davis must have incriminating pictures of someone at CBS.

#9 well that is not the only thing this site is about…and if you havent realized that, then you havent been here long
February 3rd, 2008 at 5:16 pm
14. You would think he would give himself some room but noooooo. He couldn’t have been more clear, the SEC is down and there is NO WAY they earn their way in with their regular season. Hubert Davis disagreed mentioning how successful the SEC has been in the tournament in the past and he said SEC gets 5 teams not 4 and Kentucky can earn that 5th spot. Jay got real pissy about it.
February 3rd, 2008 at 7:26 pm
Agree with the analysis of Davis… appreciate you blogging it, matt… Thought I was the only one screaming at my TV whenever he comes on… must disagree with some of the comments though… Bilas is the only reporter on ESPN that knows how to tie up his Nike’s. 11 and 13 I saw Bilas say that and I share your sentiment… but I think (I hope) he is making that observation based on the fact that this is the SEC and (lets be honest) if we dont win the SEC, we can only lose 2-3 more games for the rest of the season (a feat even in a SEC down-year is a task… even at full strength)… Keep in mind we still have games against TENN, UF, ARK… I don’t agree with Bilas, but its not an unfair/crazy-Davis-like observation.

AWESOME!!! I’m soooo glad you picked up on this. I called my buddy and told him this exact thing. Seriously, what did Seth have going on? HOW IN THE WORLD DO YOU NOT EVEN WATCH THE GAME YOU’RE COVERING?
February 3rd, 2008 at 11:01 pm
if you look at the halftime thread of yesterday’s game, this is the exact same point i made…i consider this intellectual plagiarism, but i will forgive in the spirit of seth davis douche-ness…
February 3rd, 2008 at 11:37 pm
Im glad I wasn’t the only one who noticed this douche bag say that at halftime
February 4th, 2008 at 1:27 am
Okay. I don’t know if you anyone here listens to the radio broadcast but Matt has said before that the only person who ever stiffed him on coming on the show was Seth Davis. Seth is obviously a huge d-bag but I think this post is somewhat about pride and less about correcting a poor journalist.

To: #9 cc: et al. Unless you are a friend of Matt’s and goading him, I think he’s pretty entertaining, in fact. I felt like you were being hyper-citical,which could be justified by the Matt’s viscious post on Seth Davis — who is one of those people to whom you could, after wiping yourself after #2, take that lead index finger, the one doing all of the stroking — not wash your hands, walk right out of the stall and paint him a mustache. I mean, seriously, he’a as bad as they come. Someone should alert his agent, because this is so on-point that maybe someone will take notice and he’ll get the old shepard’s cane off the stage, suffering mild neck injuries in the fall off the camera.
In UK News, I am concerned about Joe Crawford’s foot/heel, Meek’s strange and awful leg ailments, and then, lest we forget, Ramel Bradley’s skull.
I know we need to get this done one game at a time, but i am ready for lexington to be a cinderalla for the first time ever!
I got two tickets in Baton Rouge at Pete Maravich on February 16th! If you catch the game, I’ll be half-court with an amazing and beautiful woman, also in ble, among a sea purple and gold, mids row H–be wearing blue and a white wig and Wildcat Beads, next to a beautiful woman that roots all marquette, but supports UK. GO CATS

Seth Davis is deplorable.
I know Wikipedia can be a lousy resource, but if you dial ol’ Seth up, it appears his resume is somewhat lacking prior to getting to SI.
Let’s see, graduated from Duke in ’92 with a major in Political Science, and suddenly in ’95 becomes a writer for SI.
Oh wait, I missed something …he was a “Towel Boy” (my mind is racing) for the Duke Basketball team. He looks and acts like he would make a good “Towel Boy”. In fact that extracurricular activity (as many extracurricular activities do) prepared him best to negotiate his way up the journalistic ladder, because he sure didn’t do it with talent.
He’s got to know someone.
Finally, #9, how much you paying for your membership to this blog? I don’t like certain elements of this blog, especially the liberally slanted political stuff. I wish Matt wasn’t an attorney that has the potential to spend his (other) career suing people for a living (just what we need, another blood sucking attorney). But I’m willing to bet he’ll be a capable and good blood sucker. (Believe it or not, that was a complement).
I belong to other pay UK sites. This is where I go first
