An Expert’s Take on UK Recruiting

by @ 2:03 pm. Filed under Blue Blooded Opinions

I am not a recruiting expert, and frankly I dont care that much until they put on the UK jersey.  But, I was lucky enough to have a college roommate who is a recruiting expert, and that is Scout.com’s Evan Daniels.  I had a conversation with Evan today about some of UK’s Class of 2008 targets.  Keep in mind, Evan only covers high school players, so NO JUCO players (besides Appleton) are included.

Tyrone Appleton

Evan’s Take: “Been told he is very quick and talented.  Just got an offer from Kansas.  The type of kid that Billy Gillispie is looking for, from a point guard standpoint.”

Interested Schools: Kansas, Kentucky, Iowa St., Texas

Wesley Witherspoon 6′7” 185 lbs. (Berkmar HS, Georgia)

Evan’s Take: “Real long, versatile, wing foward, one of the best wings left, ton of upside and really athletic, sometimes struggles to find ways to score, ability to run the floor and handle the ball is really impressive for a guy his size.”

Interested Schools: Kentucky, Memphis, Texas, Virginia, Colorado, LSU, Kansas St., George Washington, Illinois, Clemson

UK’s chances: ” No clue at this point, really hasn’t shown his hand, will probably take his time and will probably make his decision on signing day.”

Maurice Sutton 6′10” 180 lbs. (Largo HS, Maryland)

Evan’s Take: “Only seen him once, but he is probably not a legit target.  Only minor interest right now.  Played in Lexington and UK didn’t show much interest then.”

Schools of Interest: Marquette, Clemson, Miami(FL), Kentucky

Shelvin Mack 6′2” 185 lbs. (Bryan Station HS, Lexington)

Evan’s Take: “Has committed to Butler, Shelvin’s coach has told other people that UK has turned up the heat some.  Strong, knows how to score, held his own against Darius Miller, attacks the basket well, not a great shooter.

Now, there are other guys, such as Steve Goins out of Chicago that UK has just begun recruiting.  But, because of this, most recuritng experts like Evan have not seen these guys play yet.  Hopefully, I can update this when I hear more.

Not UK related, but nice story on espn.com on WKU’s Courtney Lee. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/columns/story?columnist=oneil_dana&id=32 12517

In regards to football recruiting. Who else is cracking up about the Bonshire/McCadoo flop…

  4. al Says:

Isn’t Tyrone Appleton a JUCO player?

  5. Bryan the Intern Says:

yes, that is true, but Evan had happened to see him, so I thought I would add him

  6. AlphaSig332 Says:

Yeah, actually contradicts what the Intern stated in his opening.

  7. AlphaSig332 Says:

Ah, okay. I was confused too.

  8. al Says:

    Ah, gotcha. :)

  9. ukcatfan88 Says:

Appleton looks like Smoov with braids. Got the same eyes.

  10. Bryan the Intern Says:

it wouldnt be a post from me if it didnt have one GLARING mistake in it

  11. GoCats Says:

im here for you intern, im the only one that read the (besides Appleton) in your opening paragragh. These guys are tough on you and you take it like an intern. meaning you whine, cry, argue, and get defensive. just kidding

  12. Stmitch Says:

i would like to see us get Mack from Bryan Station. I think he would be a VERY good 4 year player for us. He may not be a “great” shooter. But, he is certaintly a very very good shooter…

  13. TBoogie Says:

#12) I agree. He’s better than Ravi, and he turned out great for us.

  14. al Says:

#11 It wasn’t there to begin with. But enough hating on the interns. I do that enough here at work. ;)

  15. ZW Says:

Is UK turning up the heat on Mack because they are worried about Appleton going to KU?

  16. YodaCAT Says:

Anyone want to see blatent recruiting violations by MSU and UT? Look at Hopson’s myspace page
and you’ll see what I mean. I just cant understand while UK gets warned about these things, but
no other schools do. If I knew how to contact the NCAA, I would.

  17. djcats4ever Says:

i have seen mack play 3 times and he would definitely be a asset to Billy G and the Cats. He would a great 4 year hard nosed guard who can score and be physical also. go and get him, now.

  18. MonstaMash93 Says:

Hey Intern, how about the forward who plays with Liggins in Nevada? Heard we may be interested in him.

  19. GoCats Says:

#18 Liggins teammate is 2009 class, these guys are ‘08 recruits

  20. Pokey Chapman Says:

This guy seems to know hat hes talking about. I heard the same thing on Witherspoon this week. He honestly doesn’t know what he wants to do and will likely not make a decision until he has to.

  21. MonstaMash93 Says:

    Thanks

  22. MuhlenberCountyCAT Says:

My hope is that we can get Appleton and Witherspoon. If we can’t get either one then I want that kid from out west, I think his name is Jeff Taylor and Shelvin Mack. I wouldn’t mind we got Witherspoon and Shelvin Mack. I just want at least two of these four guys. Yes, Liggins’ teammate is in the ‘09 class, but IMO he is definitely a must get in that class. Clarence Trent can flat play. It would be nice to get Keith Gallon and Jon Wall as well.

    Hey Bryan,
When is SIGNING BAY? All this recruiting guess work is driving me nuts.

  23. MuhlenberCountyCAT Says:

Oh and yeah I also want Jon Hood for the 09 class.

  24. deWildcats Says:

I read some of these comments “I want this” “I want that” … all I picture is some little kid writing a letter to Santa

  25. deWildcats Says:

OMG - I think Kige is Santa

  26. drizzlemizzle Says:

    #16, stalker much…

and i didnt see anything on his page that was newsworthy

  27. MuhlenberCountyCAT Says:

I was reading comments posted by Scotty Hopson freinds on his myspace (I know it’s lame but). One of Scotty’s freinds wrote him and said, “BG works his players hard. He just thinks your lazy. U need to talk to him.” I thought that was kind of wild.

  28. MuhlenberCountyCAT Says:

deWildcat, Maybe you just aren’t on some peoples level as a fanatic. Also, who the hell cares what you think. I guess your too cool for stuff like that, huh. Maybe your to cool for this site as well, so maybe you should go elsewhere.

  29. krebscalledmeagirl Says:

Doubt that constitutes as an NCAA violation. People not involved with athletics at a university have the freedom to say whatever they want. After watching that top video on his page, amde me realize he is a stud. I dont think his attitude is right, but I think hes worth the while.

  30. MuhlenberCountyCAT Says:

#29 How can you read what I wrote in my #27 and come to the conclusion that I was saying it should be some kind of a NCAA violation. I just thought it was cool to see what some of his freinds were saying about BCG. I have always thought that BCG’s toughness on his players would hamper his recruitment of a player with a bad attitude. You have to want to play for a tough coach because you have to want to push yourself to get better. I think Hopson already thinks he is great. When he gets to the next level he will see how wrong he is.

  31. krebscalledmeagirl Says:

    30- I was referring to #16.

  32. krebscalledmeagirl Says:

and I def. agree with you

    I’m “pimping” my site again…lol

  35. MuhlenberCountyCAT Says:

WOW, Mark Turgeon really has a lack of talent at Texas A&M.LOL. I really don’t see how wins a single ballgame. He must be a great coach.

  36. CATZ1AGIN Says:

glad to hear someone talking about Mack. He would be great like someone said for four years. they need to lock him in.

  37. GoCats Says:

If the story is Hopson doesnt work hard on defense, I will trade two players(not mentioning names) that do not know where the basket is but play defense, for a great scorer who may need work on defense.

  38. alleyoopscoop Says:

Just passing along some info, if anyone is interested. Jody Demling said this about Witherspoon:

Scoop - Does UK have a realistic shot at signing 08′ wing, Wesley Witherspoon?

Demling - The last I heard from Witherspoon it was Memphis, Texas and Virginia recruiting him the hardest and he has visited LSU. He still lists Kentucky, but I’m not sure after the King of the Bluegrass if there’s been a lot of contact from the UK end.

  39. ale8one Says:

Mark My WORDS: Shelvin Mack will blow up like Chris Lofton at the next level.

  42. MuhlenberCountyCAT Says:

Looks like we’re not going to get Witherspoon.

  43. MuhlenberCountyCAT Says:

What about Deandre Liggins, Darius Miller, Tyrone Appleton, and Shelvin Mack, and Possibly Jeff Taylor.
