Can you feel it? Today marks the beginning of a month long holiday for the state of Kentucky, the start of the UK post season. Okay, maybe the Cats don’t play today, but the SEC tournament begins, and the excitement around the state is electric. The last time the Cats won the tournament was over Florida in 2004, and the last time Kentucky has been this good going into the post season was during the 90’s (save for arguably 2003.) So go ahead and take Friday off, your boss will understand. They will be watching the Cats too. Breath deep friends, March is here.
A few quick notes:
-While the SEC tournament’s may not mean much to Calipari, historically this one is kind of important. According to Wikipedia, the is the 51st SEC tournament, and a chance for Kentucky to win it’s 26th Tourney title. Yes, that’s right all you math majors out there, Kentucky currently owns 25 titles and the rest of the SEC combined? 25 titles. (If you include the title Georgia Tech still owns.) So while Cal is right, the more important tournament is still getting set, but it would be nice to have more titles than the rest of the SEC, don’t you think?
-And as I am typing this, Championship week is under way. I just witnessed a kid drop 34 in a half to come back to win, and we just saw Louisville choke up a another half time lead to come away with a loss. Gotta love college basketball.
-As far as post season awards go, it looks more and more likely that Evan Turner will win Player of the Year. Even if Dick Vitale disagrees. But as Chris Johns pointed out in the post below me, maybe that’s for the best. What it comes down to is this, save for Kansas, Kentucky and Syracuse, if you put John Wall on any other team in the nation he is Player of the Year. But because Kentucky has enough players around him, he doesn’t have to put up the numbers that Evan Turner does every game (no discredit to Turner, he’s a phenomenal player.) But in the end, I think we would all take a better team than a National Player of the Year.
-In news unrelated to this years tournaments, former UK players Thad Jaracz and Bob Tallent are joining with some of the former Texas Western players to throw their support behind the lawsuit between former NCAA athletes and the NCAA. The lawsuit, in my understanding, is to prevent the NCAA from making untold amounts of money from replaying highlights of former players. Sure, as athletes they cannot be paid, but does that mean the NCAA owns every image of them even after they graduate? That’s what the lawsuit is trying to settle. Best case scenario? We never have to see the Laettner shot again.
-Finally, the blog will be running a little differently over the next couple days. In the mornings you will still have your normal posts, and post game you will still get your wrap ups. But throughout the day we will be running a live journal. Similar to the old school SEC tourneys, and the way we ran things at the Hoops for Haiti telethon, there will be one post that is updated multiple times per hour. Throughout the day almost everyone will be stopping in with their thoughts and the news from around the Kentucky Sports world, it should be a lot of fun. At the least, it will let us keep track of Drew’s progress at the bars in Nashville. Keep KSR up, and keep it refreshing.
Have a Merry March everyone. Go Cats.

10, 14 and 16–Thank you for easing my mind. I have not been able to get on nearly as much as I am accustomed to and thought my computer had a virus or was about crash. I have tried a few different browsers and it happens regardless.
Thank goodness it is a site issue because I don’t have the extra cash to replace this circa 1999 HP for the newest Mac.

17 you do realize you can spend like 300-400 dollars to get your local computer nerd to build you a really nice computer right?

It is no guarantee, but having multiple lottery level draft picks is usually a pre-requisite for tourney success. UK has not had this type of talent since the 90s. Interestingly, I’d say IU ‘87 (last champ with no first round draft picks) and UK ‘98 (three first-rounders, but no lottery picks) are the least talented teams to pull it off - which makes one appreciate 1998 that much more, IMO.

anyone know what channel the sec tourney is gonna be shown on dishtv?
March 11th, 2010 at 7:02 am
1-2 - Considering there are zero reports of this on any news outlet local or national, I am doubting this landmine story.

Did any of those former players pay back their free tuition, books room and board or any money they made from basketball/jobs obtained from their education? Seems like the trade off is: NCAA and school get up to 4 years of basketball and residual images, player gets a chance at professional basketball and a free education to be used any way they see fit.

Tennessean has a good story about Coach Cal and the “1-and-done” kids. Refers to the SEC tournament as “UK & The Eleven Dwarves.”
http://www.tennessean.com/article/20100311/COLUMNIST0201/3110362
Kentucky’s John Calipari excels at one-year wonders
Kentucky is a prohibitive favorite to run the table as the SEC Tournament promises to be UK and the Eleven Dwarfs.
Two of Coach John Calipari’s players — point guard John Wall and center DeMarcus Cousins — are projected NBA lottery picks. This is their first and last college season.
Junior Patrick Patterson, who is on schedule to graduate in May, is also considered a first-rounder, and some mock drafts have freshman Eric Bledsoe being picked if he comes out.
And even if he has only the two freshmen drafted, Calipari will remain the king of one-and-dones in college basketball.
Is it worth it to make your living with temps?
Syracuse Coach Jim Boeheim thought so when he signed Carmelo Anthony, knowing Anthony would be gone after one year. Anthony led the Orange to a national championship.
Most SEC coaches say they would take a high-profile player for one season, knowing the right player can take a team a long way at tournament time.
They know they probably won’t hit the lottery to the degree Kentucky did, but they would take a John Wall for a year.
“Absolutely,” South Carolina Coach Darrin Horn said. “The key has to be, are they guys that can come in and do what Kentucky’s guys have done? Are they going to show up and produce and be the kind of guys that help your program even though it might be only one year?”
Tennessee’s Bruce Pearl could find himself in that position if highly recruited Josh Selby comes to Tennessee. It’s a long shot, but the Vols are said to be back in the hunt along with Kansas and, yes, Kentucky.
Asked whether he would take a player who stays barely long enough to open his Christmas presents, Pearl glowed.
“Absolutely. We would love to be in a position to be able to have guys come and play for you, do great and then leave your university, even though it’s after a year,” he said. “I think that Ohio State would look back at the time that Greg Oden and Michael Conley were there and say they made a pretty good run at the Final Four.”
There are some pitfalls if you take multiple one-and-done recruits.
It will be interesting to see if the Academic Progress Rate affects Kentucky if Wall, Cousins and Bledsoe leave early and not be academically eligible.
It could lead to a loss of scholarships. Tennessee lost one last year, Ohio State two. It can have an impact, but coaches in the SEC seem willing to take the risk.
LSU’s Trent Johnson is one of those, but perhaps for a different reason.
“We do take one if he is good enough,” Johnson said, “because my wife likes to shop a lot.”
Johnson followed that statement up with a dose of reality.
“I want the best player possible to help us win games. Make no mistake about it, it’s about winning games,” he said. “Those guys that are one and done usually help you win a lot of games.”

Excerpt on land mine incident from clarionledger.com:
Well, the good news is I called UM basketball sports information director Joey Jones and he gave me a little longer version of what happened. Apparently, the route the team had taken to get to Bridgestone Arena went right next to some explosives that had been set up to demolish a building, but nobody had warned them (Kentucky took the same route).
Once the teams arrived at the arena, someone alerted the bus drivers that they should probably take another route when leaving Bridgestone Arena, so the UM players and coaches had to wait a little while as everyone figured out another way out of there.
Source
So basically, it sounds like a bit of an overzealous Tweet gone wild. There were explosives involved, but the danger was minimal and there is absolutely nothing for fans to worry about as they head to Bridgestone Arena today.

40 I miss the IU fans. At least you could get a semi-intelligent load of BS from them.
March 11th, 2010 at 9:54 am
Yeah, behind Bridgestone Arena, they’re demolishing a ton of old buildings and clearing the land to start construction of the new convention center. I could see where they’d let the team buses back in what is otherwise restricted without thinking about the EXPLOSIVES they keep back there. Metro Nashville Gov’t for you.
