As some of you might have heard, an anonymous blogger at LEO wrote something about a story coming out regarding violations committed by John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins. As is the case with absurd rumors that seem to pop up this time of the year (usually regarding recruiting), we generally try to ignore them. This one has taken on a new life though, so Matt wanted me to pass along a few things (doing things like this might be why he thinks he’s my boss).
First of all, he said it is completely and utterly untrue. The allegations have absolutely no validity or even a shred of truth to them. Kentucky fans have nothing to worry about.
Second, he said that he’s spent a good portion of his day calling around to national media writers and not one says they’ve heard any inkling of a possible national story regarding violations. No one he spoke with had heard anything about any allegations or any stories being written.
So, that’s it. Nothing. Absolutely nothing. This, of course, proves the age-old internet proverb to be true. Don’t trust anything written by Bryan the Intern or anyone with an alias. Even if they do write for a supposedly legitimate publication.
And speaking of supposed legitimacy, don’t forget to check out “One Blogging Moment” on CBSSports.com. It’s better than the LEO.

Remember this time last year, UCONN was getting hit with ‘major’ violations regarding paying that one recruit that transferred out, or something to that effect. That never came to anything, and there were major networks reporting on that.
Settle down Big Blue Nation…hard to believe a pro-UL ‘paper’ would start rumors about violations right before commitments were going to start coming in.

What’s to keep Cousins and Wall from suing the hell out of this LEO thing? Matt, can you speak to the possibility of slander or liable in this case? How about a class action suit brought by the BBN for spreading unfounded rumors?

The rumor was started by a UL fan and the national writer is, surprise, supposedly Pat Forde. As the rumor goes, ESPN won’t publish Forde’s allegations so he is shopping a story to the NY Times. Rumor involves a UK booster purchasing a house for Cousins’ mom and Wall allegedly “flashing” cash as of late. Again, this rumor was started by a UL fan who claims to be close to Forde. I doubt there are any legs to this but we all know Forde has been sniffing around the program all year looking for something to bring down Calipari.

Sooooooo, Matt calls around to the national media asking them IF they have hear “this crazy rumor about Wall and Cousins.” BRILLIANT. So, some sports writer in NY, LA, Miami, North Dakota with their thumbs up their asses (and NOTHING to write) get a call - out of the blue - from some blogger in KY (KSR). I just wonder if those sports writers are now smart enough to RUN with the story now. One of two headlines you can expect to see…

39) You underestimate the popularity of KSR. As ridiculous as they claim to be and as asinine as some of the posts are, KSR is more than a legitimate sports blog and has friends/admirers in high places. Matt is not just “some blogger.” He has access to national sports writers. “Some blogger” couldn’t call them up and talk candidly about this subject. If it is a nonstory, no real journalist with an actual reputation is going to run with it. Any d-bag with a blog can make something up and post it. That doesn’t make it truth.

The Leo is no more a legit source than The Onion. The difference is The Onion is amusing. When in search of content, Leo contributors are not above pure fiction. When I worked in the Ville for the now-defunct Louisville Panthers they actually made up a quote from our team president for a story. Never spoke to him or anything. Patrick Forde would like to be the one journalist responsible for the downfall of the UK program. He is the next Karen Sypher…if not already.
