It seems that Bruce Pearl has decided enough is enough in Knoxville. Meaning, of course, that center Brian Williams has endured enough discipline and enough suspension to be fit to play. Pearl reinstated the big man before Saturday’s game against the Devan Downey show, a 76-53 win for the Vols in which Williams dressed but did not play.
Now, someone more cynical than myself might question the timing of the reinstatement, as it comes just days before Tennessee’s toughest stretch of the year with trips to Vanderbilt, who already beat the Vols in Knoxville, and Lexington. They might think that because these two teams feature two of the best big men in the conference, Pearl may not have discipline on his mind at all, instead choosing to focus on the awaiting disasters if his team were to play without its most legit-ish big man. Someone more cynical than myself might think that.
This surely is not the case. He indefinitely suspended Williams and, whether for guns, drugs, or both, an indefinite suspension lasts until your team is definitely looking at two ass beatings in one week. Now that we all know that, we can say without question that everything here is on the up and up and anyone’s initial suspicions of something fishy were clearly misplaced. This is 100% not shady at all, in the least, and has nothing to do with potentially getting smoked in back-to-back games on ESPN or falling out of the race in the SEC East.
Seriously.

Brian Williams is the missing link. puff puff pass.

February 8th, 2010 at 5:06 pm
i wish i could say i was surprised at the timing. but can you blame him?
February 8th, 2010 at 5:06 pm
The vols needed more “weapons”
February 8th, 2010 at 5:06 pm
Tyler Smith is joining the team as a grad assistant. He’ll be doing road security on this road stretch
February 8th, 2010 at 5:07 pm
Great analysis Bomani. Will have to check out your show
February 8th, 2010 at 5:07 pm
With Vandy and UK up next, Williams will be out drinking and smoking tonight with a gun.
February 8th, 2010 at 5:08 pm
Williams will still be Cousins’ bitch. It would probably be less humiliating for him if he just didnt play.
February 8th, 2010 at 5:11 pm
Pearl needs a necklace.
February 8th, 2010 at 5:12 pm
Guys don’t worry about it, Bruce Pearl told me to come out and play just to make you guys look even better when you beat us and so our whiny fans won’t complain as much about losing Tyler Smith. Do you really think I stand a chance against Cousin, Orton, Patterson or even Stevenson. C’mon I’m just going to give you chances to block the ball and turnovers so don’t worry about it.
Sincerely,
Secret Cat Fan (Go Big Blue)
February 8th, 2010 at 5:15 pm
I think Pearl and Pitino have the same “indefinite” time tables. Didn’t Caracter’s suspension end around a time they needed him most?
February 8th, 2010 at 5:15 pm
pearl is such a slimy character. NOTHING he does suprises me, he has been accused of being slimy everywhere.
February 8th, 2010 at 5:18 pm
don’t see Williams slowing Cousins down much - just gives UT 5 more fouls. Don’t think he can even outplay Ogilvy…
February 8th, 2010 at 5:21 pm
An overweight, untalented center who hasn’t played in 6 weeks is not a concern.
February 8th, 2010 at 5:22 pm
This team has two guys who can hurt you, Chism who they need to get in foul trouble and Hopson who is streaky.
February 8th, 2010 at 5:22 pm
I don’t understand how a coach can punish a player in this specific situation. It’s biased. If, let’s say, Jon Hood got caught with all the stuff the UT players did, I’d want someone not related to the UK basketball team, not Coach Cal, to punish Hood. Just like I’d want my jury to be random and unbiased, not the family of the person I murdered. (Not that I’ve murdered anyone…)
February 8th, 2010 at 5:23 pm
Not sure why Pearl thinks the time has now fit the crime. Guess UK and all the bigs are making him shake in his orange boxers. Boogie is bad and I don’t see Williams being anything but a whipping boy like he was for PPat last year.
February 8th, 2010 at 5:24 pm
Have you seen Brian Williams play?
Only thing going on here is a bored blogger looking for something to talk about.
Now I’m bored.
February 8th, 2010 at 5:28 pm
Who cares about Williams. Just another guy for Cousins to spin around and Orton to block. Oh, and Patterson will make him wish he was suspended
February 8th, 2010 at 5:31 pm
OK, This is NOT anything close to a game changing decision. The Vols won’t win with Brian or without Brian. He just gives them an experienced back-up Big Man.
February 8th, 2010 at 5:32 pm
Nothing SUCKS like TENNESSEE Orange!
February 8th, 2010 at 5:37 pm
We simply MUST beat Tennessee this weekend……of all the games that concern me the rest of the year this one is at the top of the list…..If that chest-painting goon comes into our house and manages to slip away with a win I will vomit…..We’ll need a big game out of the entire team…..and if by some chance we catch them on an off day and can pound them by 40, that would be the answer to a mid-season prayer….This is the first of probably three games we’ll play against them between now and March 15…….
February 8th, 2010 at 5:37 pm
How ironic is that? Man that is just too hard to believe, right before the UK game, who in the world would have thought it? Got give it to Pearl great timing the question is why even suspend him in the first place, nothing like playing games.
February 8th, 2010 at 5:40 pm
1. From the very beginning the word was Williams would be gone for 6-8 games.
2. Does it really matter if he gets to sit the bench now?
3. Do you think your coach would have acted differently?
February 8th, 2010 at 5:42 pm
In support of my 3rd point, straight from Cal’s mouth:
“I do not throw kids under the bus at the first sign of trouble. So, well, this kid did that and that kid did this and why do you keep that kid and that kid was this . . . I just ask you, if it was your son and he screwed up, would you want me to throw him out of school? “Well my son wouldn’t do that.” Oh. You got the one with the halo. The rest of us got those others.”
February 8th, 2010 at 5:42 pm
yea matt talked about this last week, a day late, more than a dollar short, u are terrible, as are all the new ppl. bti looks like a god these days, wow, hard to imagine me saying that.
February 8th, 2010 at 5:44 pm
I can totally understand this move. I mean, what better way to punish a player than put him in there guarding Boogie?
February 8th, 2010 at 5:48 pm
What does Williams bring to the table? Fouls? He averages 5 points and 6 rebounds.
February 8th, 2010 at 5:50 pm
2 & 3 = FailNerd
February 8th, 2010 at 5:51 pm
Honestly, Stevie Wonder could have seen this coming.
February 8th, 2010 at 5:51 pm
When I heard about Williams’ re-instatement, one thing popped into my brain…he will be the designated “HENCHMAN” for the Ky game, in oreder to try and get Cousins riled up and thrown out of the game….you watch !!!
February 8th, 2010 at 5:52 pm
And just because Williams doesn’t put up points or anything doesn’t mean he won’t have an effect down low. Pearl is bringing his fat ass in to hack and elbow cousins.
February 8th, 2010 at 5:53 pm
25) to answer point 3 no, but he hasn’t done it yet and he doesn’t wear orange blazers. So we make fun of pearl, as we would expect UT fans to do if the situation was reversed.
February 8th, 2010 at 6:00 pm
33- actually, the answer to 3 would probably be yes. Cal would likely have been much more lenient than Pearl was.
February 8th, 2010 at 6:09 pm
I’m so glad he’s back. Now Pearl can’t make excuses when we kick their a$$ with all their thugs in uniform
February 8th, 2010 at 6:11 pm
doesn’t Brian Williams suck anyway? Who CARES?
February 8th, 2010 at 6:13 pm
PASSS the dotchy on the left hand side…
February 8th, 2010 at 6:43 pm
Payne, I completely agree with you in #25 & 26, but why would you say “Cal would likely have been much more lenient than Pearl was.”? How would you, I, or anyone for that matter, know?
February 8th, 2010 at 8:10 pm
Lets ask Liggins if he’s lenient
February 8th, 2010 at 10:13 pm
Weed, failed armed robbery, malt liquor, and traveling hostesses looking to give hand jobs….it’s a rocky top thing..
February 8th, 2010 at 10:20 pm
Williams won’t play Tuesday, and probably not on Saturday. He didn’t even play Saturday in a blowout. This ‘holier than thou’ wagon you all are on is sad. Williams sat out 8 games, and didn’t practice with the team until Sunday. You think he’s gonna be ready in a week to face 2 top 25 teams???
February 8th, 2010 at 11:44 pm
Also, nice choice of a picture….that’s from Pearl’s first year, and UT won at Rupp.
February 9th, 2010 at 7:53 am
Kentucky just needs to be Kentucky.
February 9th, 2010 at 9:37 am
39- Cal was a coach before he got to UK. Did you know Tyreke Evans was the driver for his cousin in a drive by where he murdered someone? How about a player beating his girlfriend and having to sit out only a game? Or the many other incidents that have gone basically unpunished under Cal? Don’t be stupid.
February 9th, 2010 at 10:13 am
45-”Don’t be stupid.” listen I wasnt attacking you, hell I said I agreed with you for tyhe most part. It was a question and you want to start with the personal insults…Dont be such a PRICK!
February 9th, 2010 at 11:24 am
46- It is stupid though. For the first few years on this site whenever Cal came up it was almost unanimous that everyone thought he was dirty and a sleazy coach. Fast forward to today and all those posts disappear and everyone acts like he poops ice cream. The history of him being more lenient than most is there (and btw I agree with his decisions in most of those cases) but you all act like none of that ever happened and instead want to make fun of a coach who has a record of being harder than most. All of which is stupid. Do you know how many kids Pearl has kicked off the team since he got to Knoxville? Major Wingate, Duke Crews, Ramar Smith, Josh Tabb, and Tyler Smith. And those aren’t scrubs he is getting rid of either.
February 9th, 2010 at 11:51 am
47 Did/do I think Cal is/was shady? Yes, I think almost all coaches are, including Pearl (look up his relationship with the Pump brothers), and I don’t really care. I asked you a simple question, which you answered, but then you want to start the personal attacks. Did I start out calling you names? Furthermore, the entire UK fan base does not represent me or my personal opinions, like the entire UT fan base does not represent you. You are like that pathetic UK fan trolling other fan sites to trying to defend the honor of his favorite team. And don’t give that I’ve been here longer than you and I’m just keeping up with old friends crap either. I’ve been reading your comment for years and never once have I seen you “keeping up with old friends”. Just be honest, your here to fight with people. And if you want to talk about stupidity, losers who troll rival fan sites expecting to find their favorite team covered fairly ARE STUPID.
February 9th, 2010 at 12:01 pm
Where is UT’s # 1 player, Tyler Smith??
I’m just saying. We should also attack all schools who “handle discipline issues” in the same manner: i.e. UF and their Brandon Spikes recant, Oregon with their RB’s suspension, etc. I’m not saying I agree with it but these readers (and the writer) appear just a bit too surprised.
And don’t worry, Cousins will surely elbow him out of the game by the 2nd quarter. Then he will hug Cal and say “I love you Coach”; “Love you too Boogie.”.
Stripped banners in 2013…
February 9th, 2010 at 12:08 pm
Sorry - I only posted b/c my blueblood friend sent this to me.
I think the majority of ncaa schools are fairly crooked and many coaches might be too.
Hopefully Cal does things on the level with UK as I’m a big SEC guy. Just saying that it seems the writer’s trying to stir the pot….which might just be his job/intention. So, job well done. Good luck in March Cats. But I’ll still be pulling for my obnoxious, loveable Pearl!
(Admit it, everyone loves having a guy who helps your team, and everyone else hates. In the SEC, it’s almost tradition.)
February 9th, 2010 at 12:14 pm
50 “Admit it, everyone loves having a guy who helps your team, and everyone else hates. In the SEC, it’s almost tradition.” You are 100% correct, now teach your fellow UT fan(payne this, and maybe he will quit being such a thin-skinned b!tch, always crying about what people here say about the Vols.
February 9th, 2010 at 12:23 pm
I’ll defend all of Vol Nation when you can take off some of the blue blinders, lol. Just wouldn’t be the same… But I agree; you should debate, argue, hoot & holler but there’s no reason for personal attacks.
They do so, though, that “fan” is short for fanatic. Later Cat Nation. And please don’t call anyone “Blue Jesus”, or anything else Jesus for that matter.
