**Even as a girl Purdue graduate, I can appreciate this**
Alcohol makes normal people do stupid things. Alcohol makes sports fans do even stupider things. My college roommate likes to tell the story about her very favorite game at Rupp. Beside her sat a man in a ballcap with a stuffed wildcat attached to it, who (obviously inebriated) spent the entire game saying “angry kittie”, his hand making a swiping motion into the air each time. I’ll say it again: booze + passion=someone getting punched, shot, or pregnant. Nowhere is this more apparent than in college basketball arenas across the country.
I’m with Parrish on this one. All these minor incidences during games are about to come to a head ala Ron Artest and there might not be anything that college officials can do to stop it. I’m not on the “society is going to hell” bandwagon and I wasn’t around thirty years ago to see how fans acted then, but it’s not hard to see that things are getting worse. Consider this dangerous recipe:
1. A large collection of young people (men in the majority) who feel very strongly about a particular subject, namely that their team is the best and the other team isn’t.
2. 18 year old men who are frustrated, tired, and prideful. They aren’t being paid millions of dollars to put up with the abuse (unlike Artest by the way) and they have no way to defend themselves without throwing away their futures.
Things are going to boil over at some point. We can all agree that throwing things on the court (see: West Virginia) is over the line. But the provocation that comes with some of the chanting and yelling of fans is just as much of an issue.
Look, me lecturing other people on abusive language at sporting events is like a Gary Busey lecture on not being nuts. And I think chants like “Karen Sypher” and “Walsh is gay” are funny and part of the nature of the game. But let’s not be surprised when someone gets hit for dissing a player’s mamma or girlfriend or hairdo.
Everyone remembers the Steve Kerr incident at Arizona with the PLO chant coming from the ASU fans. Everyone would remember it more if Steve Kerr had, instead of going off for 20 points in the first half of that game, gone into the stands and started a brawl.
But not every player is going to be a Steve Kerr and they shouldn’t have to be. They should be able to have fun and play the game, and yes take a little teasing. The bottom line is that when people make the choice to drink and then talk crap to 200 lb men, at some point things are going to get ugly.
Check this out for some pretty cool (clean) chanting from Utah State.

I’m a 210 lbs man. Can I talk smack?
February 5th, 2010 at 4:02 pm
and no, you freakin’ nerd, you aren’t first.
February 5th, 2010 at 4:06 pm
If I am Steve Kerr I don’t go into the stands either. Someone his size would get a whoopin.
February 5th, 2010 at 4:10 pm
I went into the stands. OINK.
February 5th, 2010 at 4:11 pm
that chant about my Dad is SERIOUSLY MESSED UP.
February 5th, 2010 at 4:17 pm
Being homophobic is funny and part of the nature of the game?
February 5th, 2010 at 4:18 pm
The Utah State chant is pretty sweet
February 5th, 2010 at 4:22 pm
#1 #2 Lol Schizo much?
February 5th, 2010 at 4:25 pm
“I just love that hunk of a man holding up that sign.”
February 5th, 2010 at 4:26 pm
“Is that a Jack-in-the-Box bowl haircut too!”
February 5th, 2010 at 4:27 pm
I have never read something that made me feel so much dumber and its so stupid that this post is just not smart and really its a bad post.
February 5th, 2010 at 4:28 pm
The chick under the sign is hotter. Lol
February 5th, 2010 at 4:30 pm
Yeah let’s instead chant great effort or thank you. Usually like your posts Katie but this one is right out of the Bob Knight playbook.
February 5th, 2010 at 4:34 pm
6—Are you calling me homophobic?
February 5th, 2010 at 4:38 pm
6 - just because walsh is gay doesnt mean im homophobic, queer bait
February 5th, 2010 at 4:40 pm
11) I could say something similar about your comment.
February 5th, 2010 at 4:41 pm
“I love how people bash me. It just enhances the fact that BTI is my idol!”
February 5th, 2010 at 4:41 pm

I don’t get this post. Yes alcohol makes people do dumb stuff and it’s equally happening in football crowds, etc. WVU are morons, but ‘the crowd’ isn’t changing bc all of a sudden people drink.
February 5th, 2010 at 4:45 pm
Another typical overreaction in the media over one person’s stupidity. I mean college basketball is no where near as bad as
NFL football and college football when it comes to drunken idiots (fans).
February 5th, 2010 at 4:48 pm
Honest to God, if Steve Kerr had gone up into the stands and killed a couple of kids with his bare hands, it would have been justified.
February 5th, 2010 at 4:49 pm
I saw a West Virginia fan get real drunk and punch a baby in the face during a game last year.
February 5th, 2010 at 4:51 pm
11. WHAT?
February 5th, 2010 at 4:51 pm
Props to the Utah State fans….that’s a job well done.
February 5th, 2010 at 4:52 pm
I started the Karen Sypher chant and it was epic.
February 5th, 2010 at 4:53 pm
ghorn19 - you are okay with Steve Kerr killing kids? Man, that’s deep.
February 5th, 2010 at 4:56 pm
whats the solution kate? prohibition? you must have been struggling to find a topic for today.
February 5th, 2010 at 4:58 pm
stupider is not a word.
February 5th, 2010 at 5:00 pm
Your with Parrish??? You think Boogie is going to break a student’s jaw? Parrish is way off base with his characterizations of DeMarcus Cousins, just look at the hate he unleashed at #15 on this website alone.
February 5th, 2010 at 5:03 pm
Once again Chris Collinsworth has made my day.
February 5th, 2010 at 5:09 pm
i snuck through admissions
February 5th, 2010 at 5:10 pm
i agree with ghorn19, the plo chant would have hurt me emotionally bad and my ass would go up in that crowd and straight murda fools
February 5th, 2010 at 5:16 pm
#29 “characterizations of DeMarcus Cousins”
I think I remember MM and the tbk bunch saying Cousins was a ” Punk ” and would do nothing but destroy the team.
And now we see Cousins holding babies and being a great teamate …
So I don’t believe anything anymore lol

Who in the hell are you people that will judge someone that tries to entertain you for free!Is this not the best U.K. blog for info? Has any writer claim to be perfect? At least give them the respect that they deserve for having the courage to put it out there for all to see. I know I did not puntuate, damn commas. Kudos to the Crew!
February 5th, 2010 at 5:23 pm
#11 - don’t throw stones
February 5th, 2010 at 5:23 pm
#32 Same, but I would torch them for 50 then wait until the horn. THEN run into the student section and brawl! That way people are running and creating traffic for the security…. Ya know, so I have more time to get s*** rite…
February 5th, 2010 at 5:27 pm
#26, Dude, college kids…..you know, 19 year olds dumb enough to chant “PLO” at another kid whose father was killed by them.
You know, the kind of thing NOBODY would ever say to his face.
Yes. I’m okay with him knocking some faces in in that case.
February 5th, 2010 at 5:29 pm
#34 I’ve been spouting off stuff like that for about 5 years now Lol
It’s only gotten worse.
February 5th, 2010 at 5:41 pm
Any thirteen year old knows its not nice to yell at people.
February 5th, 2010 at 5:42 pm
Any thirteen year old knows its not nice to drink and yell at the same time.
February 5th, 2010 at 5:43 pm
Any thirteen year old knows its not nice to drink jesus juice and yell at the same time.
February 5th, 2010 at 5:49 pm
I could choke those #*@&ing Utah State kids for chanting anything other than “thank you” and “great effort”.
February 5th, 2010 at 5:52 pm
11.) So, is the post what caused you to spew that comment out of your fingers and type nonsense? If anything, we are all dumber having read your comment.
February 5th, 2010 at 5:53 pm
34- So you go to a free The Who concert, you get there early, hoping for a good opening set, and it’s Ashley Simpson… do you complain?
February 5th, 2010 at 8:09 pm
44-I agree. Kind of like when you take the hot chick home form the club and give her a cup check and realize (s)he’s up for the challenge. I guess they would have us not complain in that situation as well.
February 5th, 2010 at 9:00 pm
9 think about it…you can’t be that stupid. It’s not humanly possible.
