[Moderated by Matt Jones]

There was an earlier version of this story, which I changed after recognizing that the figure in the video was likely Patterson and not Cousins. Oh well, I have been on the road for a week, and I am getting old.
Today was a travel day for me and when I returned to the Bluegrass state, the world was abuzz. Emails, twitter messages, facebook comments, etc all asking the same question. So what happened with Demarcus Cousins and a South Carolina fan? In case you too missed the excitment of the day, the story boils down to this. A South Carolina student named “Steven” (I love how he refuses to give his last name) told a local South Carolina radio show that Cousins hit him with a “chicken wing” and a “cold cock” after the game last night, as he was storming the court. (You can hear his phone call here. Stephen of course said he did nothing to provoke it, and his story was apparently “verified” by a South Carolina tv reporter, who said he saw the whole thing. The allegations came out today, and the internet was set afire. (a more complete view of the story from the South Carolina side can be read here)
After hearing the story, I started making calls on the UK end and found that no verification could be made. Everyone I spoke with didnt see anything, and Cousins’ placement on the court (far away from the bench and dressing room), made it impossible to tell what happened when the masses swarmed. Then, I was made aware of this ESPN video, which shows the so-called “incident.” Originally I (and others) believed that it was Cousins walking on the top left of the video…but some readers in the comments section suggested (and I think correctly) that it is Patterson. So it might not tell us very much either.
So what are we left with? Well it looks as if we now have a case in which a random South Carolina student and a reporter are making an allegation, with no real proof to back it up. Is it beyond the pale of one’s imagination that Cousins could have hit a guy? I guess not. But in a scene like we had last night, I suspect there is a lot more to the story than originally meets the eye. My guess is that Cousins was approached by a swarm of unruly South Carolina fans, running all around the court and likely occasionally talking trash. In the heat of such a moment, lots of things can happen.
I however dont believe that a “cold cock” took place. Put it this way. If Demarcus Cousins punched you in the face, you would know it. And for some kid to say he got punched and then there to be no proof of that, visual or otherwise, I dont believe it. Could he have pushed him or done something else he shouldnt? Maybe. But “cold cock” a kid and the kid has no harm? Not buying it.
Regardless, the incident is proof that storming the court, while cool to see, is dangerous. That many people running at full steam, interacting with players of the other team is asking for trouble. We might never know what Cousins did or didnt do and even if we find out, we wont know the context (which is crucial). But what we do know is that Kentucky lost, Cousins took it hard and when approached by fans of the other team, something could have happened. Thats why the two lessons I live by, (1) try not to let people’s actions get in your head and (2) dont mess with Demarcus Cousins should be heeded by all parties involved. If they had, this would not be an issue today.

If you look closely you can see a second Boogie on the Grassy Knoll.
January 27th, 2010 at 7:55 pm
The guy is still able to speak and perform most cerebral functions. What other evidence do you need that Boogie didn’t put the smack down on him.
January 27th, 2010 at 7:55 pm
although the video isnt clear, I still applaud how Boogie (seems to) handle it. If I were him (and as big as him) if some b*tch collge tool named Stephen came near me, I would drop him in a heartbeat. Great job by Boogie, and if he did throw a quick elbow (or “cold cock?”) then even better
January 27th, 2010 at 7:56 pm
After this they are going to fine Carlton Fisk for pushing fans as he rounded 3rd in the 75 World Series.
January 27th, 2010 at 7:57 pm
i don’t see it. the film doesn’t show anything of the sort to me.
January 27th, 2010 at 7:59 pm
btw do you see at the end (0:17) some gumby like SC figure try to run towards the UK bench before getting thrown aside by UK assistants
January 27th, 2010 at 8:00 pm
If anybody’s going to “cold cock” someone, it wouldn’t be Boogie, it’d be Greg Oden.
January 27th, 2010 at 8:00 pm
6) I believe you are thinking of Chris Chambliss when he hit a homerun for the Yankees in the ALCS to win the game
January 27th, 2010 at 8:02 pm
I think that is Carl but the film quality is so bad that it looks like they have on a sleeve. There is no possible way Boogie could have thrown two punches and even if he did, wouldn’t coaches immediately surround him and get him the hell out of there? Unfortunately I think it is just USC not being satisfied with just winning but they are getting petty and trying to cause some controversy.
January 27th, 2010 at 8:03 pm
Stephen should be arrested for storming the court. He acted “stupidly” (shout out to Barack). Case closed.
January 27th, 2010 at 8:04 pm
There are already some comments on the SC Fined 25K thread. To sum it up. I was at the game and made it a point to watch the team as they left(I was trying to ignore all the screaming cocks). That was Patterson, not Boogie in that clip. The assistant coaches did a great job of evacuating the team. Several fans ran into the assistant and Patterson. I’m 99% sure the assistant had to push fans out of the way to get to the tunnel. Nothing happened, except fans ran into Patterson and he didn’t move, and the assistant had to move fans out of the way to get his player to the tunnel.
January 27th, 2010 at 8:17 pm
i think the “If Demarcus Cousins punched you in the face, you would know it” should be highlighted
January 27th, 2010 at 8:23 pm
I’m 42 and i’ve learned ont thing in life..If a guy is 6′10 and 280lbs you don’t get in his way..
January 27th, 2010 at 8:23 pm
That video is horrible. That “figure” IS Patterson. He was the last one to cross half court heading towards the lockers when he was met by a couple assistant coaches. I was actually watching closely as the students were cutting through between UK bench and press row and it looked to me at the time like some idiot “ran into Patterson” in his childish frenzy and Pat simply was protecting himself by holding his arm out so the kid didnt run into him.
That was my interpreatation before I turned to TV off last night. Cant tell anything from this vid.
January 27th, 2010 at 8:23 pm
It wasn’t Cousins. You can see the guy has a blue arm sleeve arm. Plus, the numbers on the jersey at the beginning look more like 54, 34, or 24, not 15.
January 27th, 2010 at 8:26 pm
11 - what u describe is exactly how i saw it too. i paid attention to the team as they were leaving and Calipari was waving the team to hurry up but Patterson was taking his time so Coach O’ came and hurried him out of there.
January 27th, 2010 at 8:27 pm
14 IS RITE LOOK AT THE SLEEVE ON THAT GUYS LEFT ARM ITS PATTERSON BOGGY DOSENT WEAR ONE.WHAT WILL THE GAME COCKS TRY DO NEXT OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
January 27th, 2010 at 8:27 pm
last time i checked cousins doesn’t wear an arm sleeve
January 27th, 2010 at 8:29 pm
I heard it was Stephen Garcia..he got into another bar fight and was too drunk to tell whether it was Boogie or a football player.
Put it this way, if Boogie did do something, 1.- we would all know about it because 2.- this “Stephen” character wouldn’t live to tell about it.
January 27th, 2010 at 8:29 pm
i think their name just suits them…COCKS. that is all
January 27th, 2010 at 8:29 pm
I was at the game last night. The man in the video is Pat. Cousins was off the court earlier and he got crashed into by a few few fans. It looked like they fell over some chairs and fell into him and he braced himself on them then walked away. No punch, this is nothing.
January 27th, 2010 at 8:30 pm
also this the first post where matt has legimately sounded like a defense lawyer
January 27th, 2010 at 8:31 pm
It is Patterson in the video not Boogie… Look at the arm sleeve on the left arm as he walks away…
January 27th, 2010 at 8:31 pm
you rush the court at your own peril. everyone has a right to protect themself in that situation. i think it’s even in the constitution.
January 27th, 2010 at 8:31 pm
How many technicals can you get in college basketball now? JP prince has 2 and is still playing
January 27th, 2010 at 8:38 pm
At the 0.38 mark, if looks like Stephen goes back and to the left, back and to the left. Cousins is a righty, so you would think Stephen would go back and to the right.
January 27th, 2010 at 8:41 pm
Boogie or PPat is going to be making 8 figures and this moron is getting close enough to him to jeopardize it.
Wait till the first student or university gets sued for rushing the court and jeopardizing or hurting a players ability to earn millions of dollars.
January 27th, 2010 at 8:43 pm
Maybe this has been discussed before but during the last few seconds of the game during a stoppage for a foul it seemed to me that the cock’s little mighty mouse PG was gesturing to the crowd to rush the court.
January 27th, 2010 at 8:43 pm
I got cold cocked last night! Thanks Drew!
January 27th, 2010 at 8:44 pm
Hey Matt, I was wondering the last time John, Boogie, Bledsoe lost a game? Also I was wondering their record in the last 100 games they played in, not including AAU ball.
January 27th, 2010 at 8:47 pm
oh crap, the guy everyone (and I at first) is thinking of is in fact patterson, but thats not who we should be looking at. This is the video’s fault because it doesnt include the actual incident up to question. Its in this video towards the TOP RIGHT and happens within the first 8 seconds: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmgjYd1WN94
to be honest, that flat out looks like a punch… this is not good
January 27th, 2010 at 8:48 pm
17) “Boggy”? Really?
Lolz.
January 27th, 2010 at 8:51 pm
What if I revealed to the world that Devan Downey keyed my car after the game? It’s as plausible a story as this so called “incident”.
January 27th, 2010 at 8:52 pm
Matt,
I’ve watched in back 100 times on the DVR. The relevant “video” is right before this clip. Look at the guy in the upper right hand corner, near the beginning, in the UK blue dress shirt. He was with Cousins, a little behind Cousins. As Cousins is walking off, and “escorted” by UK personnel, a wave of USC fans are coming at him and falling to the ground in front of him/UK’s bench. It looks like Cousins might have stumbled, or leaned down to help someone, but he bends/falls down at one point and UK people push him forward toward tunnel. It looks like Cousins had UK “escorts” surrounding him. Patterson, for WHATEVER reason, walked toward the completely opposite corner of the court when the craziness started — and then had to come back through it. Antigua does go get Patterson to escort him off, and that’s what this video shows.
BOTTOM LINE: If anyone got winged, clocked, cocked or punched by Boogie, there would be physical evidence.
January 27th, 2010 at 8:53 pm
Ogilvy’s hair is ridiculous ! Blonde highlights?
January 27th, 2010 at 8:54 pm
Patterson in the video not Boogie.
January 27th, 2010 at 8:54 pm
If you are being attacked you while you are trying to escape you can defend yourself. It’s the law.
January 27th, 2010 at 8:55 pm
It was clearly Ronnie from the Jersey Shore. It was “one hit kid” and definitely “self defense bro.”
January 27th, 2010 at 8:56 pm
Watch 32 video…something did happen, thats for sure.
January 27th, 2010 at 8:59 pm
1). one of prince’s T’s was for hanging on the rim. an “indirect” tech so it doesn’t count as personal. 2). looks like we REALLY need to be ready for vandy.
January 27th, 2010 at 8:59 pm
The Gamecocks are idiots, Boogie doesnt wear a sleeve.
January 27th, 2010 at 9:01 pm
42 - watch post #32 video, 5 second mark.
January 27th, 2010 at 9:01 pm
I’ll wax any fan that runs onto the court. I’m not screwing around.
January 27th, 2010 at 9:01 pm
rushing the court is a NCAA offense and isnt allowed, IF this did happen… he brought it upon himself
January 27th, 2010 at 9:02 pm
I love how he says this happened yet the fans weren’t even supposed to be on the floor in the first place? There’s that USC education paying off.
January 27th, 2010 at 9:05 pm
Somebitchs just skated with the win of their life times. They need to let sleeping dogs,or should I say Cats lie. Wait till they come to Rupp. They’ll get something to cry about.
January 27th, 2010 at 9:06 pm
If this did happen, I am disappointed that someone didn’t do that to Downey as he drove to the basket, threw up an off balance bank shot, and flopped like he got fouled. If the refs were going to call that “touch” stuff, then we have to start fouling guys like Magloire used to. I bet Downey might think twice about coming in there at the end of the game if he knew he was going to catch a 6′ 11″ 280lb arm and elbow across his head. We need to quit swiping and start being aggressive if we are going to be called for a foul anyway.
January 27th, 2010 at 9:06 pm
The video in 32 does look like somethin happened, but you cant tell what, it looks as much like a punch as it does if some fan was runnin onto the court and fell into him, he kind of jolts back suddenly
January 27th, 2010 at 9:07 pm
Yeah I agree, 32’s video does show something happening there in the corner, don’t watch Patterson, watch the tunnel where the UK players are filing out.
January 27th, 2010 at 9:09 pm
The more I watch it, the more it looks like he throws an elbow.
January 27th, 2010 at 9:11 pm
that could be nick calathes for all we can tell. what crappy “proof”
January 27th, 2010 at 9:14 pm
If you go to the zoo and feed the animals, you shouldn’t cry like a little bitch when you get bit. With that said, Boogie did nothing wrong.
January 27th, 2010 at 9:15 pm
ahh, after looking at 32’s video, i see what everyone is saying
January 27th, 2010 at 9:20 pm
Simply a boogie noogie. Get over it cock.
January 27th, 2010 at 9:26 pm
If he did nothing wrong then why were the Cocks fined $25,000?
January 27th, 2010 at 9:28 pm
I hope little Stevie gets some tickets for the game at Rupp. I would like to make sure he understands the difference between incidental contact, and a punch. He’s probably a little sissy queer who only weighs 110 pounds and wears low cut “girl jeans”.
January 27th, 2010 at 9:36 pm
I feel bad for UK, but 0bama jinxed the Wildcats when he called them last night and told them not to get “cocky”. He did for the Wildcats what he is doing for the economy.
January 27th, 2010 at 9:36 pm
57. like obama?
http://www.usmagazine.com/files/obama-bike-b.jpg
hopefully a political fight will divert the attention from cousin’s and what he did/didn’t do
January 27th, 2010 at 9:38 pm
Fans storm those courts at their own peril. Its amazing nobody has been seriously hurt by a court storming yet, but will eventually happen. If little “bitch” fans storm the court and mob the other teams players they are asking for some type of Love Tap anyway.
January 27th, 2010 at 9:42 pm
Someone stormed the Rolling Stones stage back in 1981 and Keef slammed his guitar into his head. 60) nailed it, you run out on a court, you do so at your own risk.
January 27th, 2010 at 9:47 pm
Maynard from Tool choked a fan that got on stage on time….go to the 20 second mark.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7O-Nd0tZg8
January 27th, 2010 at 9:48 pm
I don’t see the punch at 32. I see Cousins jolt and kind of stumble and lean down, but I don’t see him throw a punch out. What am I missing?
January 27th, 2010 at 9:49 pm
Good catch 32, and yes something made cousins abruptly change positions but unless you’re jack bauer and CTU to enhance the video and frame by frame it, let it go cocks. You won, enjoy, we’ll see you in march. No we won’t because we’ll be a one seed and you’ll be in the NIT if you’re lucky
January 27th, 2010 at 9:50 pm
What I’m seeing in the higher quality ESPN video is someone appears to fall down right at Cousins’ feet, causing him to nearly tumble over them. What looks like an elbow could be him flailing his arms while trying to keep his balance and not come crashing down on the kid. If he’d thrown a punch or elbow, with that many students and coaches around, don’t you think a melee would’ve ensued???
My opinion? With that many students scrambling to get on the court, one or two got tripped up and fell down right at Boogie’s feet, nothing more. Either way, unless someone comes up with a HIGH QUALITY video of him actually throwing a punch or elbow, nothing happened and it’s a non-story.
January 27th, 2010 at 9:54 pm
looks like they fell/stumbled into him
January 27th, 2010 at 9:55 pm
Man that was the fastest two punches ever. Boogie needs to be in cage fighting with that hand speed. This South Carolina guy is full of it.
January 27th, 2010 at 9:55 pm
Looks like a push if anything…can’t really tell though…I’m thinking if he punches someone it’s all over ESPN this morning.
January 27th, 2010 at 9:56 pm
Someone whacked Patterson with a jacket, that is plain to see. (0:15) USC fans are very nasty and in your face. They deserve it!
In #32 video I see Cousins getting tripped by a fan rushing the court.
UCONN fans will always think twice before tangling with UK fans, after what happened in MSG.
USC are little sissies for even bringing this up.
January 27th, 2010 at 10:00 pm
That’s definitely Patterson you can see the right arm sleeve.
January 27th, 2010 at 10:03 pm
not to argue with fellow uk fans, but i honestly can’t see how your saying he tripped over someone. im all for defending Boogie, but seriously, try not to be bias. Maybe it was just a shove, but he clearly does not trip- it is all an upper body motion and he clearly thrusts an arm/fist towards some tool student who probably said a wise ass b*tch comment to Boogie.
January 27th, 2010 at 10:05 pm
oh and im not picking on Boogie. I would have done the same thing in that situation. Im all for storming the court, but you should be NOWHERE NEAR the opposing teams bench. anyone who runs towards the opposing players deserves to get their teeth knocked out
January 27th, 2010 at 10:25 pm
26. Best comment on this page. We all take this too seriously.
January 27th, 2010 at 10:26 pm
#71…
Good Lord man….I’ve watched this 50 times. I have no idea what you are saying/seeing. LMAO at the phoney outrage. Really don’t think you are a CatFan.
January 27th, 2010 at 10:31 pm
Who are those two guys in the picture at Wildcat Lodge?
January 27th, 2010 at 10:36 pm
75. It looks like Cousins has Stephen in somewhat of a headlock. You’re right how did Stephen get to Coal lodge?
January 27th, 2010 at 10:39 pm
Thanks for the link #32. Plainly, you can see something happen in the top right corner, but it is hard to tell what happened. It looks like he threw a punch, but he could have been trying to keep his balance.
January 27th, 2010 at 10:43 pm
#76,
If you look closely at the bushes to the left of the sign, the second Cousins that #1 mentioned is waiting to jump out and punch him while Boogie holds him down.
January 27th, 2010 at 10:45 pm
#71 - “Clearly” - are you serious? The only thing clear from this video is that the fans stormed the court.
January 27th, 2010 at 10:55 pm
I feel like I am watching the infamous “Patterson film” of bigfoot lore. Funny that the person in the film is named Patterson. How bout that?
January 27th, 2010 at 10:59 pm
Cousins definitely throws a killer combo… This “he tripped and fell” or “he is getting his balance because he stumbled” talk is garbage. I am huge UK fan, but I am not going to let being a fan skew what is clear as day in that video. Just saying…
January 27th, 2010 at 11:02 pm
They should feel like punks for bringing this up. If a UK fan got punched I don’t think there would be a lot of folks in Lex. crying about it.
January 27th, 2010 at 11:03 pm
81. Clear as day? Nothing is clear on that video.
January 27th, 2010 at 11:07 pm
83. Check the video from #32.. 5-6 seconds in. Top right corner. One-two combo.
January 27th, 2010 at 11:11 pm
Now I see it. Looks like a UK player is leaving the court as fans are jumping onto the court. Can’t be sure but maybe they make contact with one another. I’m 90% sure about this from the video. I’m still missing the clear attack by Cousins.
January 27th, 2010 at 11:14 pm
@ #32
“If he did nothing wrong then why were the Cocks fined $25,000?”
Huh? They were fined because they stormed the court.
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=4863093
January 27th, 2010 at 11:18 pm
bullsh**!!!boggie eats souls…if he hit someone they’d probably just explode
January 27th, 2010 at 11:19 pm
I got suckerpunched by Demarcus Cousins and all I got was this lousy t-shirt.
January 27th, 2010 at 11:19 pm
And yes, that is Patterson.
January 27th, 2010 at 11:27 pm
I could watch this 100 times and wouldn’t see what you all are talking about.
January 27th, 2010 at 11:28 pm
90. check the video from #32
January 28th, 2010 at 12:32 am
ive watched 32’s video and i still dont see $hit…wtf are you all talking about?
January 28th, 2010 at 2:58 am
You’re seeing what you want to see if you claim to clearly see punches thrown.
January 28th, 2010 at 7:19 am
That is not Boogie. Replay the end of the game, the last one of the court is Patterson, Antiqua is the one that walks out and gets him. In the video that is Pat.
January 28th, 2010 at 7:25 am
In the video by #32 that does look like Cuz, but to his defense they were storming the court and running into the players that is the kids fault, I would throw a punch to. All in all, if the players read the comments, we love you all, dont let the ignorance of a bunch of fans make you not appreciate what BBN is all about.
January 28th, 2010 at 8:53 am
The player in the video is Patterson. Notice the sleeve on his arm, Cousins doesn’t wear a sleeve. Now, there is no way Patterson throws any punch of any sort. If anything, protect himself by pushing someone away if they come after him.
January 28th, 2010 at 9:45 am
i think there is a miscommunication here. in the video posted by 32 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmgjYd1WN94), instead of paying attention to the center, which is clearly patterson, look in the top right corner about 2 centimeters from the top and 1 centimeter from the right at the 6 sec mark.
i tend to agree with 71 and 81, it does look like he’s thrusting rather than falling. and there actually is a second “thrust” right before they cut to dykes and co and before he leaves the screen. we have to be realistic about this and telling it like it is doesnt make you a bad fan. at the 5 sec mark you can see him stumble and then the thrust at 6 sec. its really hard to mistake that for a stumble or him helping someone up. this could be a huge deal and for those that say its nothing then maybe you never heard of lagarrette blount? granted this isnt definitive video proof, but if it comes out he really did hit someone post game, does no one see the repercussion?
January 28th, 2010 at 9:46 am
I don’t know what kind of equipment 32 has to enhance his video, but I can’t tell crap about what happened . I guees some people see what they want to.
January 28th, 2010 at 10:00 am
He should have hit more of them. Nastiest students in the SEC. Check the what the football team says about them. They are crude, nasty, vile and in your face. I’m not sure how they kiss their mothers with those mouths. Even the adults taunt you in the stands. There is no wonder this is such a shithole state outside of Charleston.
January 28th, 2010 at 10:03 am
The only thing I saw after the game while the “cocks” were storming the floor was a dumb ass “cock” fall down and about got trampled. If some idiot “cock” came running up to me pushing me out of the way I would have shoved him away too!!! GO CATS!!!!! Time to stop all the bullshit and move on!!! GO CATS!!!!!!
January 28th, 2010 at 11:21 am
17. Maybe they will try to lose to UK, can’t seem to do it though
January 28th, 2010 at 11:35 am
Cousins should have went in the stands and punched that prick behind the announcer.
January 28th, 2010 at 2:00 pm
I was at the game last night. The USC fans were the most rude and crude SOB’s i have ever experienced and i have traveled to most of the SEC venues.I realize it was a BIG win for them but please act like you have WON before. Close call on my control, five years ago I WOULD HAVE PROBABLY GONE TO JAIL!!!!
January 28th, 2010 at 2:43 pm
It has been pretty well established that it is Patterson in the video…not Cousins…so why is it still on this site with the Cousins descriptor. It perpetuates the false idea that there is video evidence that Cousins punched someone.
January 28th, 2010 at 3:57 pm
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmgjYd1WN94
at the 5 sec. mark in the top right corner you can see the team walking off the court, and it looks like Cousins is jumping out of the way. almost as if someone fell down in front of him.
January 28th, 2010 at 4:23 pm
its not cousins in the video he doesnt wear a sleeve and the player has a sleeve probably patterson. he just wanted to let some one know he was at the game
January 28th, 2010 at 4:46 pm
I posted what happened in comment 21. let it go
January 28th, 2010 at 5:14 pm
96. i guesss some people refuse to see what they don’t want to.
and seriously, stop commenting that it is Pat in the first video, we have already made that clear. the video with cousins is posted in #32
