The Last Unbeatens

Since it’s repeated hundreds of times throughout the NFL season, I’m sure we’re all aware that the last undefeated NFL team (Miami 1972) gets together and celebrates when the final unbeaten team loses. Though the ‘76 Indiana squad apparently chooses not to toast to others’ misfortunes, I’m guessing Bobby Knight will be a little bit anxious this year until we lose. I’d love to see UK go undefeated this season first because I am a fan and second because I think it would burn Knight to no end (not to mention my obnoxious IU fan co-workers).

Texas’ loss to Kansas State on Tuesday night left the Wildcats as the last remaining undefeated team in the land. Around this time every year, much debate seems to ensue about the value of experiencing losses during the season. All those message board-eers love to point out the character building and fire lighting that a loss can bring. All those years of losing Pong tournaments have made them experts in competition.

Let’s look at the last ten years’ final unbeaten teams and their final results:

2001-2002: Duke (Lost to Florida St. 1/6/2002)- Sweet Sixteen

2002-2003: Duke (Lost to Maryland 1/18/2003)- Sweet Sixteen

2003-2004: St. Joseph (Lost in the 1st round of Atlantic-10 tourney)- Elite Eight

2004-2005: Illinois (Lost to OSU 3/6/2005)- Runner-up

2005-2006: Duke/Florida (Lost on the same night (1/21/2006))- Sweet Sixteen/Champions

2006-2007: Clemson (Lost to Maryland 1/13/2007)- NIT

2007-2008: Memphis (Lost to Tennessee 2/23/2008)- Runner-up

2008-2009: Wake Forest (Lost to Virginia Tech 1/21/2009)- 1st Round of Tourney

2009-2010: Kentucky

National Champions: 1
Runner-ups: 2
Elite Eights: 2
Sweet Sixteens: 3
Tournament: 1
NIT: 1

Since my husband’s dream is not reality and we cannot in fact time travel or exist in alternate realities to test out theories (sorry honey), there’s no way of telling if and when you lose during the regular season makes a difference. Clemson was the last unbeaten in 2007 and entered a landslide that resulted in an NIT bid. Contrast that to 1996 Kentucky squad that lost their first game 2 games in and is still considered one of the greatest of all time.
It’s nice to be the last unbeaten through January, but as all UK fans know, March is when it matters.

I don’t believe we will go undefeated but it sure is nice to be the last team left standing just like we will be in April.
As long as we don’t lose to Florida or UT…or USC…or LSU…or Arkansas or Miss St or Ole Miss…Ok we can’t lose to anybody.

  3. bschoen Says:

St. Joes was the situation that brought about the chatter, and Elite 8 isn’t bad for an A10 team. The only other two to go into february unbeaten ended up in the finals. No bad can come from winning when that is the point of each game.

I think that #1 is nice but what really matters is the last win in March Madness, I think that a loss now makes for a better tournament run.

  5. dElkAntlers Says:

Not sure if IU counts as being un “Beaten”; Knight was DDT’ing and Figure Fouring at practice for sure.

I dont think a loss now would make for a better tournament run. If we were undefeated going into the tournament I think that would provide extra motivation to not lose. So lets just finish the season undefeated!!

  8. Jim Cantore Says:

Yes, but I’ll never forget how we stoned Bobby’s undefeated season in 1975. Watched Mrs. Knight cry in the stands, while his cheerleader girlfriend cried on herself.

I was but a wee weather guy then, doing morning drive time weather for Dick Vitale’s day care academy.

  9. madblue187 Says:

no chance to go undefeated…thats not what matters most…a 6- game win streak in the tourny is what matters…will you people get a grip on reality…Predick…UK finishes season with 2 losses, and lose in the final 4

  10. Mack Dizzle Says:

No way we go undefeated. If we beat Arkansas, we will have a team full of 17 and 18 year olds running around bragging that they are the #1 team in America and that my friends is when you get your ace handed to you!!!! LOL

  19. macon_volfan Says:

very cool that over the last 10 years the Vols have been the team to beat the last unbeaten team twice. Too bad there’s not more to show for it, but in both cases (06&08) the team did okay overall.

@#9 I “predick” that you don’t finish High School.

  26. Mattcat68 Says:

Ok reality check time. It’s good that the Cats are 18-0, they’ve taken care of business and beat teams they should have beaten, but we still don’t know how good this team is or isn’t, for that matter. When you look at the schedule, as it stands today, 1/22/2010, of their 18 wins only 6 (that’s right, 6) of them have come against teams with winning records. The other 12 currently are .500 or below. That’s not to say that UK isn’t a great team, but based on their schedule so far, we simply don’t know how good they actually are. Tennessee, Vandy, Ole Miss and MSU are really all that are left to measure them before the NCAA tourney. Beat those teams and then we can talk greatness, until then, color me somewhat skeptical.
