In voting tighter than Tim Tebow’s chastity belt, Coach Calipari was named the 2009 Kentucky Sportsman of the Year by the Kentucky sports media. 54 media members from the four regions of the state (Lexington, Louisville, Western and Eastern) voted on the award, given previously to such heroes of sport as Cawood Ledford, Jamal Mashburn and Stefan LeFors.
Coach Cal edged out Lady Card and WNBA No. 1 overall pick Angel McCoughtry, who led Louisville to the honor of being the last team UConn destroyed last season, by a vote count of 362 to 323. Cal had 14 first place votes, 6 more than Rachel Alexandra who, now that I think about it, isn’t a sportsman at all. Coach also beat out Rich Brooks, Jodie Meeks and John Wall among others to claim the Commonwealth’s highest award. In the process, Kenny Perry failed in his attempt to repeat last year’s victory and become the award’s only three-time winner, denying him what would have certainly been the greatest honor of his illustrious career.
Considering the voting was finished and tallied before the guy raised a million dollars in an afternoon, did the John Wall dance and appeared on a KSR podcast, I’d think it’s safe to say Coach is a sure thing for 2010. Just a guess.

The Best BlueUKCats (1/18/2010 at 4:06 PM) Report Violation How you are ignoring UK’s weak schedule amazes me. There is no chance a #1 seed Kentucky goes to St. Louis over a #1 seed KU team. Kentucky has risked less than any other top ten team on the court - being undefeated with that schedule is not some great feat.
Joe Lunardi (3:33 PM)
Kentucky has played seven games away from home, more than any of the current No. 1 seeds. I’m just not buying this argument. Don’t blame UK because KU couldn’t beat a team with six scholarship players (and very nearly lost to one with NO scholarship players). Is Kansas better in March? Probably. Have they done more than Kentucky to date? Absolutely not.

Kansas barely even beat Cornell! Obviously you Kansas fans envy us or you wouldnt be following our news. Get over it! You freaks will never be ELITE!

Kansas played a depleted SEC team and got their butts kicked. The jerkhawks are an afterthought now. UK is back on top and the Kansas wannabes should stick to fighting with the KU football players and getting DUIs- things those morons are good at. UK easily gets the one seed over the KU criminals. KU has not played anyone and has still lost.

I found the comment posted on ESPN. Joe Lunardi must of had a live chat today. KU fans are ripping UK for their week strength of schedule.

Let the jerkhawks talk. You have to bring it on the court. Patterson and Cousins will run circles around that neanderthal Aldrich.

It’s great for Cal and all, but really Tyson Gay should have won the award. Cal has done great things so far but he hasn’t even won a National Championship. Tyson is the second fastest human on the planet, EVER! I believe he did hold the record at one point. If he could get healthy he might have a chance at being the fastest (it may be a long chance, but one still). I don’t think at this point we can say Cal is the second-greatest-anything yet. I am not even a big running fan, or track and field fan, or sprinting fan, or what ever a person who likes people that run fast are called. I just know history when I see it. Tyson is almost the Tiger woods of his sport, without all of the sex and car crashing, obviously. He is the fastest man from the United States EVER! He should have won. /rant

Not only is coach cal a tremendous recruiter and coach, but he is a wonderful person, and the perfect ambassador for our state. He works tirelessly to improve our basketball team and the community, in the state and the world. I would like to personally thank john calipari for representing our team, our fans, and our state with class and grace. We love you coach, and look forward to many great years on and off the court.
