[Moderated by Matt Jones]

Well those fine folks at ESPN are at it again, this time doing an Outside the Lines Show on Sunday about the UK transfers that occurred after the switch from Gillispie to Calipari. From the ESPN press release:
Some players tell Outside the Lines Calipari told them that they were unlikely to get much playing time in his system if they stayed. Several players said the dramatic roster turnover at Kentucky is an example of how coaches have little loyalty to returning student-athletes, especially when a new coach is hired. Kentucky officials say Calipari just wanted players who fit his style of play.
Then there are quotes from specific players.
Matt “The Beast” Pilgrim:
“It hurt because I abided by the rules. I did everything I was supposed to. … Kept up a good GPA, went to class every day, didn’t fail any tests. … I feel like just for following my part of the contract, they should follow theirs.”
Kevin Galloway:
“I thought I was going to finish my career there, graduate from UK.”
It has been known for some time around the Kentucky parts that this was coming. Sunday will be the day that it will air. And one wonders why the UK-ESPN relationship soured. This is only the latest reason.

Surprised this isn’t being shown right before the Louisville game on Saturday…
December 30th, 2009 at 1:56 pm
Just another way that ESPN is scared that UK is back and thier love child Duke is slipping away!!!
December 30th, 2009 at 1:57 pm
This will only be a fair criticism if ESPN interviews and discusses the transfers that have taken place at other schools.
December 30th, 2009 at 1:57 pm
What happens when a beast cries?
December 30th, 2009 at 1:59 pm
I hope they were able to catch up with Konner Tucker, although I suppose he didn’t actually transfer from UK.
So I guess the list will be Beast Pilgrim, Kevin Galloway, AJ Stewart, and Donald Williams.
December 30th, 2009 at 1:59 pm
I wonder if Pilgrim thinks it still hurts now that he’s gettin PT. He is a UK west anyway. Galloway…ummm, sorry bout that, we’ll send you a Final Four Tshirt.
December 30th, 2009 at 2:00 pm
ESPN has gone overboard in trying to pick up on anything controversial to feed the haters. I simply do not like the way they seem to protect the other top programs in the nation (UNC, PUKE, KS). Also, their analysts (crazy knight and sissie james) seem to want to BE the news as opposed to reporting it.
December 30th, 2009 at 2:02 pm
Who is this Pilgrim and Galloway guys.:)
December 30th, 2009 at 2:02 pm
So is a new coach that comes into a school with a full roster supposed to not recruit? Usually the reason the new coach is there is because the current players weren’t performing. ESPNs reporting is now as crooked as the stare from Stuart Scott.
December 30th, 2009 at 2:02 pm
Pil was a mess though. I used to see him out late at night during the week and he was always wasted. KG needs to be somewhere good to support his child.
December 30th, 2009 at 2:02 pm
If this makes Mark Scherbenske tweet more, then I’m all for it.
December 30th, 2009 at 2:03 pm
Aren’t scholarships renewed yearly? If so, Pilgrim should note that fact and grant that UK fulfilled its contractual obligation.
As for ESPN, if they really wanted to play the part of a muckraker and hold up all of the evils of elite college athletics and professional sports under a microscope in the hopes of ending al of those ills, they’d quickly have nothing to report on other than, maybe, women’s lacrosse. How would their smarmy sportscasters look making lame jokes about those clips 24 hours a day on ESPN’s thirty channels?

December 30th, 2009 at 2:04 pm
So is this the mythical national story?
December 30th, 2009 at 2:04 pm
Calipari was brought to UK to return us to the top, not his fault Billy G had 4-5 players
that belonged in the NAIA ….. I see not 1 thing wrong with his “lineup makeover”
December 30th, 2009 at 2:04 pm
Espn is always out to get UK. What people need to realize is that Cal was honest with the players and is helping them get playing time and have a start somewhere else. It’s not Cals fault that Billy G filled the team with crap.
December 30th, 2009 at 2:05 pm
Talk about kicking the ish out of a dead horse
December 30th, 2009 at 2:05 pm
A few things:
A. I assume this story will entirely disregard the fact that telling a “returning” player up front that he would be better off in another system and allowing him to seek playing time elsewhere is INFINITELY more fair than keeping the same “returning” player around without allowing him to play because he can’t get it done in the new coach’s system.
B. As for Pilgrim’s comment that “(UK) should follow their (part of the contract)”……I imagine he didn’t pay for books or tuition while he sat out (scholarships are renewable annually)…..and the NCAA let him play right away when he left…….sounds like a wash to me.
C. As a loyal KSR reader, I call for an ESPN Hate Day similar to the ones done in the past for Tennessee and Florida. Make it before the next Gameday at Rupp. Should get the crowd worked into a frenzy like the ESPN crew has never seen before.
December 30th, 2009 at 2:05 pm
The Leach situation has further proved espn has no journalistic integrity, with deadspin, tmz, and cbssports now doing a better job of covering off court stuff, espn just keeps grasping at straws of sensat
December 30th, 2009 at 2:06 pm
Uh…I don’t see how this is a big deal. You guys are blowing this way out of proportion. You have to remember that although scholarships are only year to year guarantees, like NFL contracts, most people don’t let it go as if they were firing them. I understand he did it for their sake and was being fair to them, but it’s still not the best move on his part.
Either way, let anyone talk and let them publish stories. Outside the Lines has always done stories, and usually the reports are fair. At least give it time to be published before compeletely writing them off as UK-haters.
BTW, to everyone, Kentucky being good is AMAZING for ESPN. No team has a better following and with the recent SEC contract, they need a powerhouse and everyone knows Florida & UT don’t produce as much publicity as the C-A-T-S, CATS! CATS! CATS!
December 30th, 2009 at 2:06 pm
ESPN is starting to get on my last nerve
December 30th, 2009 at 2:08 pm
But I love Sportscenter!

December 30th, 2009 at 2:09 pm
Guess they will save the outside the line for revoking scholarship offers to euton, vilarino, tucker, and 3 other guys who’s names ive since forgotten for later in the season!
December 30th, 2009 at 2:10 pm
Anyone thats not die hard UK fans like us hate UK being 14-0 and #3 in the nation. They want to
see us struggle like last year, they are Jealous of Calipari and the whole BBN. Its great to be
a UK fan baby …..
December 30th, 2009 at 2:10 pm
21) I still don’t think ESPN has realized that your last sentence is correct.
December 30th, 2009 at 2:11 pm
I really don’t care. Calipari didn’t recruit these guys. He can do whatever he needs to do to get his program to where he wants it. He had to make room for players that he wanted to bring in to play in his system and that’s what he did. Was he supposed to just not try and get great players just because there were already players with scholarships that would never even play? Scholarships are binding for one year anyways, and have to be renewed each year. Calipari did what he had to do to get UK rolling again, not his faulyt there were player here that didn’t fit his vision for his team.
He was honest with returning non-seniors…what’s wrong with that???? Is it wrong that these players are in situations now where they are actually playing instead of riding the bench at UK?? It’s ridiculous for this to even be brought up, and ESPN and whoever decided to make it a story and let people be babies about the situation can suck it.
December 30th, 2009 at 2:11 pm
Look how tiny (relatively) PPat’s arms are in that photo. What a difference the summer made!
December 30th, 2009 at 2:11 pm
**yawn**
ESPN did their whining about this months ago. Poor babies. Crying again.
December 30th, 2009 at 2:12 pm
Espn has become “The National Enguirer” of sports. Im suprised they haven’t linked us to Paris or Linsdey…..
December 30th, 2009 at 2:13 pm
Pilgrim is a beast.
December 30th, 2009 at 2:14 pm
And who watches Outside The Lines anyways????? lol
December 30th, 2009 at 2:14 pm
ESPN doesn’t hate Kentucky specifically. They do, however, love ratings.
The best way for them to get viewers is to help fuel passion,
and the best way for them to fuel passion is to cast heroes and villans.
To all Kentucky fans the Wildcats are the heroes, and ESPN knows UK fans will continue to support Big Blue.
By casting the cats as villans, ESPN is trying to spark the interest of the non-Big Blue Nation.
With so many of our games being on their networks, UK is going to be the biggest moneymaker in collge basketball for ESPN this Winter.
Stories like these will help the ratings for thier broadcasts…as long as we keep accepting the money from the
SEC television deal we can continue to expect lots of coverage (both positive and negative)
December 30th, 2009 at 2:16 pm
This isn’t little league at the YMCA. We want the best and that’s why Calipari was hired as our Coach. Gillespie gave scholarships to B level players that Pitino and Calipari would never have offered to. I would think as a Div-I athlete you would know this. You kidding me Matt Pilgrim?
December 30th, 2009 at 2:17 pm
I said that……34
December 30th, 2009 at 2:17 pm
Okay, I’ll try to put it this way, “screw” ESPN
December 30th, 2009 at 2:18 pm
Judging from the results so far this season, this report seems irrelevant. The timing is mighty interesting, however. I smell a pat, er, rat at porcini’s.
December 30th, 2009 at 2:19 pm
I’m assuming that they will also interview all the players that transferred out of Indiana when Tom Crean was hired (I’m being sarcastic).
December 30th, 2009 at 2:19 pm
They are reaching for stories.
How come no one was in Alabama interviewing Saban on how he signs players to schollys over what he needs in order to move kids along that will not play?
As powerful as the Blue Nation is on the net etc, I am surprised that we have not conducted an all out war with them with verbal and written correspondence. We need to bombard their Exec’s by the tens of thousands with emails, letters etc to inundate them with our angst over their lobsided bias.
December 30th, 2009 at 2:20 pm
anyone have a link to the Wall interview last night when Cousins was picking on him???
December 30th, 2009 at 2:21 pm
Seriously at this point who cares. Ever writer in the country has done extensive research trying to implicate Calipari to something illegal. Guess what pat forde, dana oneil, tipton, etc. It aint happening! The guy gets players, get over it. World Wide Wes has been investigated for 10 years by journalists and the NCAA and nothing has been found.
Cal had two final fours vacated. Could it happen at UK? Sure. But no more likely to happen than at UNC, UCLA, DUKE, KANSAS. Less we forget, corey maggette, DUhons mom’s job, ROY getting kansas slap on wrist. The only way to insure a final four doesn’t get vacated is to win the tourney. Remember Kansas won 08 final four with ineligle player (Darrell Arthur had his grades changed by diploma mill h.s so he could get eligible). NCAA will sweep under rug rather than vacate a championship!
December 30th, 2009 at 2:24 pm
Sure those players got a raw deal but if scholarships are renewed on a yearly basis then I agree that UK honored their part of the deal while they were here.
December 30th, 2009 at 2:26 pm
Matt Jones, post the Wall interview again ……
December 30th, 2009 at 2:27 pm
Is fat boy Forde behind this? How much you wanna bet that big nose
f**ker makes an appearance on that show.
December 30th, 2009 at 2:27 pm
As far as I know they left on their own free will. The only thing that will bother me is that most people don’t know how college basketball works and bad mouth us. But what the hay, can’t be more than there already is.
December 30th, 2009 at 2:29 pm
It seems to me that this is a legitimate issue, not just an attack. I suppose we as fans can be be defensive or accept that college basketball can be pretty heartless toward the kids who are playing. It’s not like anything that ESPN is doing is going to realistically hurt UK’s chances for success.
December 30th, 2009 at 2:29 pm
So Matt, Is this the negative story you have been talking about that will come out about UK?
December 30th, 2009 at 2:30 pm
Life is a bitch. Calipari was hired to return this program to the top. Honestly, I would not trade one scholarship for the current state of our program. It is not like their NBA careers were jeopardized.
December 30th, 2009 at 2:31 pm
Wow. As if we needed to be whipped into more of a lather by Saturday. Game on!
December 30th, 2009 at 2:31 pm
31) you say that on every single post, time to move on.
December 30th, 2009 at 2:32 pm
I say on gameday when they come to rupp nobody shows up!!!!!!!!!!!
December 30th, 2009 at 2:32 pm
Somebody call the waaaambulance
December 30th, 2009 at 2:32 pm
This doesn’t surpise me. OTL is running a show next month regarding Cal leaving the seat up.
December 30th, 2009 at 2:34 pm
On a good note, the home court officiating these last two or three games has been some of the better officiating I’ve seen in Rupp in years.
December 30th, 2009 at 2:35 pm
I like it when UK is hated. It means we finally matter again. The only reason people stopped hating UK was because we sucked. It feels good to be hated again.
December 30th, 2009 at 2:35 pm
not worth discussing
nobody will remember after it’s done
who’s bobby knight?
December 30th, 2009 at 2:39 pm
42 all seniors were offered to stay weren’t they? He chose to leave rather than sit on the bench for his senior year being the fourth pg
December 30th, 2009 at 2:40 pm
Jealousy is a mother f#$#%R!
December 30th, 2009 at 2:42 pm
SportsCenter is the only thing worth watching on ESPN and it sucks too.
December 30th, 2009 at 2:42 pm
Galloway wouldn’t get any playing time on this team. I’m guessing he could have stayed if he wanted to, there was an extra scholarship when Meeks stayed in the draft. So unless Calipari forced him to transfer I would say it was his decision.
Ultimately it’s better to be up front with these kids about their playing time. Because having disgruntled players sitting on the bench will hurt the team in the long run.
I’m not sure what ESPN’s angle will be, negative obviously. But what about Kansas who booted two players off the team to make room for recruits, without the excuse of a coaching change.
December 30th, 2009 at 2:42 pm
Anybody heard anything on Micah’s knee?
Eff espn.
December 30th, 2009 at 2:42 pm
The results speak for themselves.
December 30th, 2009 at 2:44 pm
Its not Cal’s fault the drunk bastard before him recruited a bunch of scrubs from the YMCA.
December 30th, 2009 at 2:46 pm
Who wouldnt take Wall and Cousins over Galloway and Pilgrim???????????
December 30th, 2009 at 2:46 pm
40 and 44 - Iterview is on John Clay’s blog: http://johnclay.bloginky.com/2009/12/29/video-john-wall-talks-about-lo uisville-or-tries-to/
December 30th, 2009 at 2:54 pm
It just dawned on me - didn’t Pilgrim transfer in from Hanover? I wonder if Hanover thinks he fulfilled his part of the “contract”. Hello, Mr. Kettle, meet Mr. Pot….
And thats Interview in post 65, not Iterview….
December 30th, 2009 at 2:54 pm
From everything I know about this situation, Calipari sat the players down and told them the truth: that they would get no playing time on his team and, if that bothered them, to look elsewhere with UK’s full blessing and support. If ESPN can come up with more, I would like to hear it, but I doubt they can.
December 30th, 2009 at 2:57 pm
This happens all the time, even in programs with longstanding coaches. E.g., a few years ago Wake Forest brought in one of the top recruiting classes (Aminu, Walker, and Woods). Prior to their arrival on campus a number of players transferred. I asked one player that I knew what was going on. His response? “Coach met with everyone and told us where we stand.” The players who left realized that they were not going to see much PT with the new recruits.
December 30th, 2009 at 2:57 pm
…and, shockingly, the ESPN official preview says the former players “were encouraged to leave” and were told by Calipari “they were unlikely to get much playing time.” OH NOES!
December 30th, 2009 at 2:57 pm
This is a load of crap. Deep fried jealousy filled crap. Pat Forde will show up on the thing,
I guarantee it. Barnhart has already unloaded on them once. He needs to do it again. Is UK
seriously going to allow ESPN/Knight/Forde or anyone involved with this load of crap to set foot
in Rupp during a UK game? We should tell them to cover the game from the parking lot.
December 30th, 2009 at 2:58 pm
Just my opinion..but, I think ESPN knows exactly they are doing..they are positioning/branding UK as the new bad boys of college athletics..the new “U” if you will. By stirring up controversy, they get the best of all worlds by giving the hoards of haters a reason to tune in and and the even better by-product is that the majority of BBN will b**ch, moan, and complain to the tune of myriad hits on their web sites. ESPN has no interest in making UK look good..get used to it..it comes with the territory..
December 30th, 2009 at 2:59 pm
I bet Jai Lucas would have stayed…………….
December 30th, 2009 at 2:59 pm
“six of Gillispie’s players say they were encouraged to leave”
No way, some of them had to have been Tubby players.
December 30th, 2009 at 3:05 pm
I have vented, and am already over this. Thank you, KSR. BTW, your comments outnumber HL’s 73-7. You play Kentucky to their Hartford.
December 30th, 2009 at 3:05 pm
Galloway barely saw the floor on last year’s NIT team, so what are the odds that he would see any minutes this year? Slim and none. ESPN ought to be ashamed of themselves for going after these guys to go on camera and drudge this crap up again. Let those guys move on with their lives at their new school’s where they are actually going to get a chance to play. The UK hate is getting so thick you can almost cut it with a knife. I love it.
December 30th, 2009 at 3:06 pm
HATE IT FOR THE KIDS, BUT AT LEAST THEY WERE GIVEN THE OPTION TO SIT AND WATCH OR GO PLAY AT ANOTHER SCHOOL
December 30th, 2009 at 3:10 pm
I used to drink the Beast in college. It gave me a bad case of slider-idus.
December 30th, 2009 at 3:11 pm
66. I think it was Hampton and I totally agree. I don’t understand what Pilgrim has to bicker about. Really? He didn’t have to sit out another year and he gets to play (which he wouldn’t have here). What does Pilgrim have to complain about other than not being on a great team?
December 30th, 2009 at 3:12 pm
Did you know that Porter was recruited by USC ; )? I hope they talk to Pete Carol about it during the show.
December 30th, 2009 at 3:13 pm
Blessed be the ESPN HATE DAY. Blessed be Bobby Knight treated to his own type of behavior when he comes to Rupp for Game Day. Perhaps there is a spare dark electrical room he can use for an office.
December 30th, 2009 at 3:17 pm
I’m sure they’ll have Pat Forde on their to get his 2cents on the story…geez enough of this garbage already…why don’t they do an outside the lines story and how great our fans are and how they travel so well and take over cities during tournaments..that would be a better story.
December 30th, 2009 at 3:23 pm
78 - Thanks, you are right - Hampton. Guess I should not give up my day job for blogging just yet…
December 30th, 2009 at 3:24 pm
Big fan of the ESPN hate day. Bring back Larry Conley.
December 30th, 2009 at 3:26 pm
It is all about ratings. Take it for what it is. Look how many of us are going to watch now.
December 30th, 2009 at 3:28 pm
maybe somebody will throw a chair at knight
December 30th, 2009 at 3:29 pm
If it wasn’t for UK, nobody would watch ESPN…
December 30th, 2009 at 3:31 pm
ESPN Hate Day needs to be accompanied by a TAWWTTW featuring Bobby Knight, Dukie Vitale, Forde and Gay Mariotti.
December 30th, 2009 at 3:33 pm
I love this team’s success this year, but I can certainly understand how some of the guys let go had hurt feelings about it. Who wouldn’t want to be part of this team?
December 30th, 2009 at 3:34 pm
I like how athletic scholarships are supposed to be different from academic or any other ones, If you dont make the grades, you lose your scholly, if you can make the team, well, guess what…..no scholly
December 30th, 2009 at 3:37 pm
The story itself doesn’t bother me. It’s not even a big deal really. It’s the fact they feel the need to continually try to shed us in a negative light. You never see them do a negative story on Duke, UNC, or KU…NEVER EVER!! That’s what freaking pisses me off. If your going to do this crap…at least be un-biased about it. It’s really getting ridiculous.
December 30th, 2009 at 3:38 pm
Tennessee had about 11 football players leave the program following the Lane Kiffin hire.
Funny that doesn’t get talked about, but UK gets picked on, again.
December 30th, 2009 at 3:39 pm
I miss Jefferson Pilot
December 30th, 2009 at 3:53 pm
#90) I’m with you there. And count me in for ESPN Hate Day. I hope the fans in Lex give them hell on Gameday.
I, too, miss JP Sports.
December 30th, 2009 at 4:00 pm
46- It’s only a legitimate issue inasmuch as it’s something prevalent amongst multiple colleges, if that’s the approach taken and multiple programs and coaches and sports are looked at, ESPN might make a good program. If the report is specifically on Kentucky it’s a pointless issue because Calipari isn’t going to follow BCG at UK again, so it’s a history lesson whose only purpose could be to make Cal/UK look bad.
Maybe ESPN had to go down the crapper because so many of the 30 at 30’s were so good and this is Karma due to the fact that the people at ESPN are not good people.
December 30th, 2009 at 4:06 pm
How about Pilgrim showing up for workouts when Cal came to town. Maybe he should give you a quote about that. If you don’t bother showing up, Cal has no room for you. This came straight from the staff.
December 30th, 2009 at 4:13 pm
I say its time for the fans to put up some signs on gameday for ESPN specifically…telling espn to get the fock outta Ky’s business!! First Jemille hill, bob knight, now this? really this Uk bashing is absurd…apparently ESPN really has nothing worthwhile to discuss cept bash UK
December 30th, 2009 at 4:16 pm
I hope the report mentions that the team Cal was left with had two players to build around: Patterson and Miller; the rest were reserves at best, non-UK caliber at worst. There was a LOT of house cleaning to do. I remember the Cal quote when he came into practice and saw the cluster of walk-ons: “It looked like a football practice, and it was ridiculous.”
I expect the typical OTL report on the evils of the college system. Sigh.
December 30th, 2009 at 4:19 pm
Frankly, Matthew… I don’t give a damn.
People want Kentucky to be the villain, so ESPN is giving them a villain.
Those too stupid to notice how they’re being manipulated deserve what they get.
December 30th, 2009 at 4:43 pm
I don’t understand why ESPN doesn’t have Bob unibrow Knight on right now discussing his take on Tech Football scandal. Hell, the damn coach probably got some of torture tactics from the old a$$hole anyway. Of course, there is nothing wrong with that, it’s just good old fashioned hard nose college athletics. Ain’t that right ESPN? What a bunch of A$$holes. Furk em all.
December 30th, 2009 at 4:47 pm
I am sick of ESPN trying to hate on the Cats. These players were NEVER going to get a whiff of any time on this year’s team. Hell, the guys he kept are struggling to fit in. Gimme a break…
December 30th, 2009 at 4:49 pm
If we stopped caring, they’d stop reporting on it.
I would like to see a slick response from our school, though, that belittles the effort by ESPN to promote negative stories. Ideally the university would do so without belittling any of the players involved. Cal tends to make some nice backhand comments, so maybe we’ll get one out of him when it airs.
Also, odds they actually interview Cal specifically about the story and the allegations people made vs just using an old clip as they like? I bet they also find someone ESPN purports to be spotless (like Boeheim or Coach K or Roy) to comment upon how they never ask athletes to leave and believe coaches should honor schollies (even though there isn’t a coach in the country who hasn’t or wouldn’t imply a player should leave if a better recruit comes along. Hell, all the elite teams lose a guy or two every year or so when he realizes he’s not welcome.
December 30th, 2009 at 4:55 pm
89–great point on athletic scholarships vs. academic scholarships
December 30th, 2009 at 5:01 pm
I’d love to see nothing but anti-espn signs at gameday. Lots of signs stating the superiority of other sporting news outlets, insulting the journalism and integrity of certain writers/broadcasters, etc. The first gameday where espn has to just pixelate the entire crowd!
December 30th, 2009 at 6:06 pm
*yawn*
Who gives a flip about this? I know I sure don’t.
December 30th, 2009 at 8:44 pm
It pisses me off too, but I love it! If they hate us again it just means Kentucky is back at the top! Ot better yet on top! Which is where we should be! Everybody can talk about UCLA and there 10 titles all they want to! They done it in 11 years! As far as Duke and tradition, what tradition?! They’ve didn’t win there first title til ‘91! Kentucky is the only team to have done what they’ve done with longevity! They did it over 100 year period! Nobody else can say that!!!! And nobody ever will!
December 30th, 2009 at 10:54 pm
#66 stole my thunder. Pilgrim is a hypocrite. He TRANSFERRED from Hampton U. He certainly didn’t honor his contract. Pilgrim got a chance to play at a big-time program and lifted his middle finger at Hampton.
December 31st, 2009 at 1:45 am
Don’t expect any love from ESPN if you’re a Kentucky basketball fan. There are a few members of its print staff I suspect aren’t Calipari’s biggest fans. This Outside the Lines sounds like a classic non-story.
Players always leave when new coaches arrive. It comes with the territory. Give Calipari credit for offering UK’s seniors all a chance to hang around if they wanted. Except darn, we really miss Michael Porter at the point. Wish he would have stayed around.
