Cal talks with Dan Patrick

by @ 1:45 pm. Filed under Blue Blooded Opinions

ESPN Patrick

Some people around here like to talk about the truly turrribe Tony Kornheiser as if he’s God’s gift to radio.  Everyone knows that it’s really Dan Patrick (or “Dan Pugh”, as Steve Beisner calls him).  Today, the greatest sports broadcaster in the history of the planet invited the greatest basketball coach in the history on the planet on the air to discuss the team that is the greatest in the history of the planet not as good as we think (according to Cal).  Coach stuck to his rehearsed schtick somewhat, but an actual interview broke out for a good portion of the segment.  They talk UNC, developing Patrick Patterson into an NBA player, what it’s been like at UK and the reality of looking for John Wall’s replacement.  Check it out.

If you don’t have a lot of time or if you secretly hate Cal, here’s the summary

If you love good radio, Coach and America, hear it for yourself here

I’m concerned with Coach Cal’s attitude that he wants to change the fan’s state of mind. I think Cal is misunderstanding this fan base. I think the fan base has been very understanding this year and since he doesn’t listen to the fans or read what they write, he is missing this side of us. If he went 4 - 4, we wouldn’t be happy, but we would understand since this is a very young team.

  11. Flop Says:

You know… The sandbagging is getting a bit old.

I understand what he’s trying to do, but it’s crossed into the condescending realm at this point.

  16. blueman80 Says:

when Cal says “we are not that good” i think he is trying to use it as a motivational tool he used when he was in memphis.. and so far it hasn’t backfired yet…in order to be good I think we have to close out games better against the Uconns and UNC’s esp on road games

  17. BigBlueFan Says:

16, I agree with you and I agree with Cal. We are not that good right now. We are a very young team and I think the fan base understands that, Cal doesn’t understand that the fans understand that. That’s my problem with what he is saying.

  18. dchagy Says:

    #11–Extremely good point!

  19. blueman80 Says:

17- agree with you as well…cousins esp has to improve from a mental standpoint…if we are going against teams that have dynamic big men

  20. SUPREMECATS Says:

11, 18—we’re not that good. he’s not sandbagging. we have a lot of talent but our execution is mediocre at best (when talking about putting a full 40 minutes together) and we’re way too dependent on one player. just like the score in the UNC game wasn’t indicative of how close the game was, our 8-0 record isn’t indicative of how good we are. we have loads to talent and have gotten by on that, but when it comes to execution, we have TONS of room for improvement and we also need to figure out a way to play without the deer in the headlights look when wall goes out. just sayin.

  21. cobrecat Says:

“he wants to change the fan’s state of mind”, I would like to think that he does not mean anything bad, I would rather think that is just the Yankee coming out of him every once in awhile.

  22. BigBlueFan Says:

21 I’m trying to think the same way. :-)

  23. dchagy Says:

#20–(In only speaking for myself), I think you misunderstand. I KNOW UK has a lot of room for a lot of improvement. What I don’t need is a person–in this case the head coach–condescending to me because “I don’t get it.” The fact is this: UK is 8-0; not 4-4. And I’ve grown a little tired (for lack of a better word) at hearing Cal do his “the sky is falling” story. He makes the point to everyone that when the team came out of a timeout, three guys were asking “what play are we running.” Well, gosh, golly, gee-whiz, maybe Cal–as the coach–out to knock some heads together so they won’t HAVE to ask such a dumb question. I know they’re young and they’ve got a ways to go before they can be considered Final Four material, but I am smart enough to figure that out on my own. And certainly no disrespect to the Coach.

  24. syrin23 Says:

To say I hate dan Patrick would be the greatest under statement of my life. Pompous douche bag, and that’s an insult to douche bags.

  25. Tavin_Dillard Says:

Here we go!!!! The fanbase has finally started to find something to bitch about!!!! It only took zero losses!!!! Great job guys and girls!!!! I knew you would do it!!!

  26. BigBlueFan Says:

25 You would have said that no matter what, you were just waiting for the “right” moment. We aren’t “bitching”. We are voicing our concerns.

  27. BigBlueFan Says:

25 Actually the fans are talking about the coach bitching when it is zero losses. Please get a clue.

  28. Tavin_Dillard Says:

Oh trust me. I have a clue. Is Coach Cal misunderstanding the fan base or do you feel he’s misunderstanding you?? Because I think there’s a difference. You may be an educated, rational fan but that does not mean you are a true representation of our “fanbase”. At least not the fanbase the rest of nation assumes we have. Or at least not the fanbase represented by those people that get interviewed on the nightly news.

When Patrick Patterson first committed to UK there was a man with a subpar amount of teeth interviewed by a local television station in Louisville. He was asked how this should impact the Kentucky team for the upcoming season. His response? “At least a Final Four.” He thought one top ten recruit should mean a team that barely made the NCAAs the year before with a brand new coach would move to a Final Four contender or should be considered a disappointment. And from my 26 years on this Earth, that is the representation our fanbase seems to get in the media.

So while you may find it unnecessary or insulting, please realize who Cal is reaching out to with these comments. He knows the irrational linger out there and he knows they tend to make it in front of cameras and they tend to give us true diehards a bad name. But, in my opinion, he’s saying these things with the understanding the portion of the fanbase who always stay rationale will continue to do so. If you start complaining about his hardcore hedging, are you any better than the lofty goal toothless??

  29. BigBlueFan Says:

I’m not quick to judge people by the number of teeth that they have in their head (George Washington only had one when he was president). I’m basing my opinion on what I read on this blog and other places. I don’t see the irrational fans that the media and Coach is referring to. I know they are out there. Now do I believe this team could make the Final Four? Hell yes. But they have a lot of growing up to do and need more experience. Also, Cal refers to fans telling him who to play. I’ve never read anything like this except for Brooks and Joker’s boneheaded calls. I can’t imagine Calipari playing anyone except the ones he is playing. I’ve seen anyone demand that Liggins SHOULD be playing, most people just want to know why he is not. Which is a valid question.
