Jay Bilas likes North Carolina

by @ 3:00 pm. Filed under Blue Blooded Opinions

Jay Bilas is arguably the best analyst in college basketball, but, even the best can be wrong at times.  In this weekend’s edition of “Bilas Breakdown,” Jay previews tomorrow’s matchup between the Cats and the Tar Heels.  He breaks down every aspect of the game, from the X-factor in Demarcus Cousins to key matchups and strategic points.  Sir Bilas gives Kentucky the backcourt advantage, but says UNC’s Deon Thompson and Ed Davis are the difference-makers in the frontcourt.  In the end, Jay picks North Carolina to win the game.

Jay, I’m trying as hard as I can to like you, but you’re making it so hard.  I feel like I’m putting all of the effort into this relationship.  You’re a Dukie, and I’m doing my best to overlook that, and then you go and pull something like this.  I just don’t know how much longer I can hang on.

Tomorrow, you’ll see.  Tomorrow, the Cats win.

“UNC is the equivalent of a European adult in a BMW on the Autobahn. Kentucky is the equivalent of a 16-year-old American kid in a Ferrari on the interstate. UK has the horsepower, but North Carolina has the horsepower and the experience to harness it.”

Whew. Really dove into that metaphor without an exit strategy, didn’t ya’ Jay? Or should I say DROVE into that metaphor.

  2. Laker Cat 18 Says:

We outmatch UNC at every position outside of probably the 3 spot. The Heels are good, but the Cats are better talent-wise. If UNC wins, experience is to blame. Don’t count out P-Pat Bilas, he’s no rookie. We hate Duke by the way.

  3. Sir Charles Barkley Says:

    Jay’s opinion is turrible.

  4. FiftyFourPoints Says:

I’m hearing rumors that Rupp Security has been notified that Lebron will be at the game
    tomorrow…

  5. bigbluedude Says:

jay has to pacify the UNC crowd somehow, because he will pick the dukies to beat them

  6. Marcus38 Says:

Boyle County won in double OT!

  7. Drew Franklin Says:

    4.) Don’t tease

  8. fearnloathing20 Says:

If he wants to pick UNC thats fine but saying the big men are the difference is just plain incorrect. Freakin’ Dukies

  9. FiftyFourPoints Says:

The Cavs dont have a game tomorrow night

  10. sethicus59 Says:

england vs USA world cup opener. f*ck yeah.

  11. KYStout Says:

Jay’s analysis is superb, but his conclusion is wanting.

  12. sethicus59 Says:

9…..dont even imply that sort of thing

  13. pizzinmeoff Says:

Bilas has to go with the ACC or the ratman will scold him.

  14. liveactionjames Says:

everybody knows those espn analyst are all about the acc…most of them will hate on or just ignore UK whenever possible. if its not duke or unc they usually dont get to excited…

  15. blueman80 Says:

Bilas forgets one thing…some of our big men like ppat, harrelson can shoot the three if warranted so I think we are pretty much even…

  16. IcemanG2 Says:

Deon Thompson will win the battle with Cousins, in my opinion. He has the experience, and he has a great jumper from the baseline that he’s been using all season long. Cousins will have one of, if not the toughest matchup he’ll face all year tomorrow in Deon Thompson. I’d trust Patterson more, but Thompson’s too long, such that he could shoot over Patrick every time. Cousins better (a) move his feet on defense, (b) not fall for the pump-fake to get airborn, and (c) have his head on straight. Win this matchup and UK wins the game, IMO.

  17. catfaninchattanooga Says:

There is a chartered flight scheduled for tonight from Cleveland to Lexington. http://www.flighttracker.com/clev2354lex9900 That would be crazy if Lebron showed up.

  18. Mojo Wilkins Says:

He has a point about experience levels, but not about the frontcourt.

  19. MIDDAY Says:

Thompson will be on Pat. Zeller on Cuz.

  20. Laker Cat 18 Says:

    16. I somewhat agree. I don’t think Cousin’s biggest opponent is going to be Thompson. I think it’ll be himself. Your letter “C” determines the outcome of the game. If he makes a mistake, he can’t slow down. He has to step it up. I don’t think we’ve seen the best Demarcus Cousins yet. His ‘A’ game is better than he’s shown.

  21. SagaciousMind Says:

I would think Cousins vs Davis, Patterson vs Thompson will be the match up. Patterson is a lot stronger than what he was last year and they are about the same height. Not to mention Pat will pull him out to the 3pt line where Davis will be one on one with Cousins. So when Wall goes to drive and Davis comes to help, Thompson isnt inside to cover Cousins and there we have a easy dunk. Pat can shoot the 3 so they have to guard him out there no matter what. If our big guys can bang inside and get some boards, UK can win this game. The D is goin to have to be there, turnovers in check and they HAVE to hit their free throws.

  22. true blue heel Says:

I did not realize some Kentucky fans were this delusional. PAtterson/Cousins is not in the same league as Davis/Thompson. And if Patterson wants to step out and shoot the 3 by all means do so. If he beats us out there let him.

I am just looking forward to the excuses that you guys will come up with by mid-afternoon Saturday. I hope the game is not close. If it is within 10 point you guys will blame it on the referees

  23. GhostofEddieSutton Says:

First of all, Jay needs to go ahead and shave those few strands of hair on the top of his head! He is one ugly MoFo! How can anyone of you praise Bilas for his analysis of any basketball game? He is always going to stick with the ACC and no Duke Analyst would ever pick Kentucky over any school. How can you possibly say Jay Bilas is arguably the greatest analyst?? You must not know the game as well as I do……….and you probably get all your information from reading stat scores and a newspaper.

  24. GhostofEddieSutton Says:

    BTW True Blue Heel………blo me!

  25. BigBlueFan Says:

I feel we are pretty even, but I’m afraid our youth will hurt us in this game.

  26. cats1068 Says:

Thompson and Davis are good but to say Patterson and Cousins aren’t in the same league is delusional also, true blue heel. You are drinking the pale blue kool aid. These teams seem to be evenly matched. So it always comes down to players making plays. One thing Bilas didn’t mention that this is UNC’s first real road game on their opponent’s court. So you never know what’s going to happen until they play the game. Patterson/Cousins not in the same league as Thompson/Davis makes me shake my head and laugh real hard.

  27. ukbill Says:

23 - Bilas (and I hate to admit it since he’s a duck) calls it straight up, always has. He is the BEST analyst of the bunch at ESPN b/c he is fair an dequitable in his analyses. It’ll be close and depend on turnovers, rebounding, and foul trouble…just like many other well matched games.

If you wanted to complain about Digger never picking UK, fine, he never does unless he’s somehow trying to jinx us (reference 1998 NCAAs).

24 - if you don’t like the game, don’t play. You know there are UK fans on the NC blogs talking/typing smack, it just is part of it, no worries.

everyone buy some livestock - goats, chickens, lions/tigers/bears…

    GO CATS!

  28. BigBlueFan Says:

On the other hand, Wall is absolutely amazing and will turn it to overdrive for this game.

  29. logan.miller Says:

    22. Got 7?

  30. blueman80 Says:

true blue heel we can also say ur point guard is not in the same league as ours…wall is faster and quicker and your telling me ppat and cousins can’t hang with davis and thompson..pat is a vet and cousins is a beast…child please…go back to your UNC message board and post ur bs over there

  31. GhostofEddieSutton Says:

27 - Thanks for the reference for Digger. I do remember and don’t ever feel any love from Doug Gottlieb, Jay Bilas, Jay Williams, Duke Vitale I mean Dick………….any of the NC/Duke lovers. Reason I do not respect Bilas’ opionion. He’s biased……

I’m a true Wildcat and absolutely can’t stand anyone from UNC or Duke. Sorry but it’s the truth! I bleed blue and believe in “Blue Jesus” Go CATS!!!

  32. SagaciousMind Says:

true blue heel, im pretty sure patterson was ranked higher than thompson and cousins was ranked higher than davis coming outta high school. patterson is pre season all american…is thompson? dont think so. sounds like to me u are just scared that our front court is just as good and our backcourt has john wall.

  33. SagaciousMind Says:

and yes i kno they were outta different classes, but still…i believe ur the delusional one

  34. bige Says:

Bilas forgets that PPat will be the best big man on the floor. He probably outplayed Hansborough that last two years.

  35. true blue heel Says:

COusins will be in foul trouble in the first 8 minutes and Thompson will wear out Patterson. JOhn Wall will have 21 points and no other help. 83-69 UNC over Kentucky

The ones that keep saying Patterson and Cousins are as good as Thompson and Davis happen to be UK fans. Analysts like Bilas and others don’t seem to agree. Now who should one believe. I will go with the analyst since they actually know what they are talking about. So all of you keep telling yourselves that your frontcourt is as good as Carolina. The only way it will happen is if Davis, Thompson and Zeller don’t get off the bus for the game.

And just another point your blogger says to bring up the fact that the 96 UK team is the best college team of all time. They are not even the best college team in the last 15 years. Sorry to burst your bubble. And Sanata Claus isn’t real either. I know more bad news.

  36. KYStout Says:

    35. The ‘96 Kentucky team would beat any Carolina team ever assembled. Deal with it.

  37. Indycatfan Says:

35 just go behind the barn with your sister….again, and talk your shit to the goat you had the night before

  38. true blue heel Says:

They couldn’t even beat last years team. They especially couldn’t beat the 2005 team. Deal with that!!!

    29. Got 1?? Basketball probations that is. Will be 2 in about 5 years once Calipari is done

  39. The_Source Says:

Davis and Thompson are ok, but I havent seen anyone like the UK front court guarding them. They are long and have been more athletic then their competition so far this wont be the case with UK. Zeller is a joke he looks lost on the court.

  40. Stickman Says:

So since you’ve received a smackdown here just like UNC will tomorrow, you resort to predicting our future probations?

Do us a favor, true blue hole, list all of Calipari’s violations. Not the schools he coached at, but the violations HE was found guilty of.

Then go look at your total wins vs. our total wins.

Then go look at your number of NCAA champ. banners vs. ours.

Then go look at how many players your school has put into the NBA vs. how many we have.

Then go look at how many times you all have been in back to back championship games vs. how many times we have.

    Do I need to continue?

  41. Indycatfan Says:

I predict that Patrick, Walls, and Big Cuz will be the next Governor, Lt. Governor, and the secretary of state of North Carolina, because after tomorrow they’ll own the state.. UK 86 unc 74….Dodson will have a breakout game

  42. true blue heel Says:

    SMACKdown?? From who?? UK fans

    1. Umass violations occurred on Calipari’s watch
    2. Memphis violations happened on Calipari’s watch

HE was just smart and slick enough to leave before he got busted. He will do the same thing to UK basketball in about 5 years. He has a track record as predictable as T.O.

1988-1984 in wins. We have gained 35 in the last 4 years. We will be 3 closer after tomorrow. We will be ahead by years end. Just a matter of time

7-5. None in the last 11 years. That is the amount of time since it has been that UK basketball has been relevant

Want to talk NBA. Who has the most players in the NBA hall of fame?? Carolina with 4. Jordan will make 5

Current college players on NBA rosters–Carolina 13 Ketucky–9

So do a little research before you come on here spewing garbage. But by all means continue

and 37. I am really not into what you folks in Kentucky do on a Friday night. NOt how we do things in NC.

  43. chris21j Says:

True blue, it must really burn that we have the second best player to ever come out of North Carolina !

  44. StitchJonesSays Says:

True Blue Heel is a wanna be. Tar heels are lame.

  45. blueman80 Says:

true blue turd heel is mad because Wall chose to come to ky instead of turdville…its ok..dude…in time you will get over it…

  46. true blue heel Says:

43-Let’s see. Michael Jordan, James Worthy, and Danny Manning all came out of NC. So Wall doesn’t even make the top three players to come out of NC so far. But keep trying.

45–Do a little research. Roy stopped pursuing Wall midway through the recruiting process. Maybe it was academic and eligibility questions. Maybe it was the breaking and entering charge. Maybe it was because he was suspended the first 2 games and had to pay $800 back for unofficial visits. Maybe it was because he was going to be 1 and done. Could be all the above. I mean Carolina’s not the ones that have sold their souls to a coach who will have you on probation within 5-7 years.

  47. Stickman Says:

42-I asked you to list the violations Calipari has been found guilty of. Like I expected, you were unable to do so.
And continuing your pattern, you started predicting the future when you couldn’t back up your claims with fact.
Your NBA talk was a nice try, but I asked who had sent more players to the NBA, not who is in the hall of fame. By the way Jordan is already in the hall of fame, has been since September. And his acceptance speech sounds like something you would have written. Try to keep up with your own alumni.
Last time I checked, 1988 wins was more than 1984, and 7 national championships was more than 5. That’s not mentioning the NIT titles we won before there was an NCAA championship tourney.

The beatdown continues. You’re a glutton for punishment.

  48. true blue heel Says:

47–You are truly delusional if you don’t see a pattern with Calipari. But when you are desperate for a return to glory you must be willing to sell your soul. I am not the one that has to live with that worry about my program. I pointed out some other NBA facts that your blogger fails to mention and you cannot deal with that.

Check out who has more NCAA tournament wins than any other school. Just another tidbit I bet your blogger did not want to bring up either.

BUt keep living in the past with those chamionships from the 40’s and 50’s. Bob Ryan was right. UK basketball is just like Notre Dame football. Irrelevant in this decade. I know that has got to suck for you

BUt I will be back at around 3:00pm to hear what excuses all you Wildcat fans are going to come up with after your beatdown.

  49. The_Source Says:

Roy left KU with NCAA sanctions and eliminated scholly’s, so using tar hole logic that means UNC will be left the same way right?

  50. true blue heel Says:

By the way. I don’t want to leave without giving you credit for being up on Carolina in another category.

    2-0

That would be NCAA probations. THe good old point shaving scandal from teh 50’s and the $1000 fed ex debacle. Great to be a UK fan

  51. Indycatfan Says:

48 I lived in NC for four years, now with that being said the only decent City I could even remotely stay in was Charlotte, folks are nice, big town amenities, with small town flavors. The rest of the state sucks like a brand new Hoover. You have to have a local cell phone carrier because the towers are so far and few, and no service for the biggest part of the state, unless you have some contract for BILL’S cell service.
Somewhere I read you said the fine folks in Kentucky have no teeth? From where I lived in NC I had to drive 40 miles to the closest Dentist. And when I first asked where the Dentist office was,the two folks I stopped on the street told me that they didn’t know “Dennis had an office”….It’s going to be a great game for the Cats your back court will be schooled today….CATS 84 Tarheels 78
