Late Friday Night Notes

You want a reason to hate Rider? How about that picture above, which apparently contains the Rider Intramural Soccer Championship team. I look at those guys and assume I would hate them. With that, I can get up some severe dislike for Rider later today. Some late night notes:

— Very little happened today, which is rather odd considering that two games are coming today (the only day all year when basketball and football play on the same day). The talk for the last 24 hours has been concerning the danger of this Rider team. They are in the underrated MAAC conference and of course famously beat Mississippi State by a ton on the road. But then again, they also lost on Thursday night to Virginia by a smooth 33 points, and will have the added baggage of the travel schedule and the 36 hour turnaround. Sometimes when everyone thinks a game could be a shocker, it ensures that it wont. I have that feeling about this one and think the Cats should be fine in the end.

— Today Calipari addressed the game on Thursday and stated the obvious, that the three point defense must get better. He was most frustrated by what I too became worked up about during the game, mainly that the Cats should have let Sam Houston drive to the basket, as the team had no chance of finishing inside. It was a classic case of a team not playing smart and that lack of basketball intelligence was the theme of Calipari’s remarks today. The same thing is probably true about Rider so we shall see if they learned a lesson.

— UK officially announced that Randall Cobb is a gametime decision in Athens on Saturday night. To me that means Cobb plays, but he may not be able to go the full game. The Cats have basically decided they will live or die with Morgan Newton, which will hopefully give the young man confidence. But the reality is that to win, Cobb must play and play well. So cross your fingers when you go to sleep tonight.

— I watched UNC and the Wear brothers play tonight for the first time. They will be REALLY annoying.

— White Chocolate is still in the NBA…did you know that?

— The line for the Rider game is the Cats giving 20. Sounds about right.

— With UNC’s loss tonight, the Cats stand up three on the Heels in the race to 2000 wins. If the Cats were to go undefeated, they could reach the mark against Long Beach State just before Christmas, as they now have 1991 wins. UK also has some game advantages over the next week, as they still have 3 more games than UNC. If they take care of business, UK should hit 2000 first.

— Two trivia points….first Boogie’s 18 rebounds against Sam Houston is the second most ever by a UK Freshman in a game, behind Chris Mills, who had 20 in one game. In addition, his 27 points was the third most ever by a UK freshman, behind Jamal Mashburn (who had 31 versus Georgia) and Rick Robey (who had 28 versus Vanderbilt). Boogie making history!

Ok here is our schedule for a busy day:

Look, this Boogie nickname has got to go. Big Cuz is a lot better name, and a natural basketball name. Boogie is too close to Booger.

6, if they hit 13+ threes i will be really disappointed. even if we win. well, lemme put it this way…i think the goal should be to hold them well under their season average.

  11. Bluegrassed Says:

    1) If Cousins can play like he did against SHS all year, then I’ll be happy to catch the Boogie fever.

Also - UNC loses! Always an event worth celebrating!

Was listening to Miami OH vs LaTech on the radio. LaTech was up 12 in the second half and Winborn or whatever his name was had 2 freakin points (and on a goaltend at that). Somethings gotta give. UK by 40 over Rider. Book it, Boogie!

  26. TayPrinceJr. Says:

I’m not going to lie, I just read Drew Frankiln’s facebook status, and I wish I could be him for a day tomorrow. Live blogging, press conferences, and podcasting, sounds good to me.

  27. GoCats2 Says:

I don’t understand why you hate these guys Jones. Give them a bad haircut and a press pass and any one of them could be you.

  28. Blasphemy Says:

GoCats2 - Don’t be so mean! If the soccer team knew you compared them to Matt, they would be outraged at such and insult. Just pure evil I tell ya!
