Chuck Hayes weighs in on the NBA vs. NFL debate

by @ 5:00 pm. Filed under Blue Blooded Opinions

Long before fans clamored for Michael Porter to switch from the basketball court to the football field (did you know USC wanted him over Reggie Bush?), I told everyone on campus that Rich Brooks would be insane to not get Chuck Hayes to come play tight end in the pre-basketball months. My theory was sound. Hayes, a first-team all state footballer in California with offers from schools like Notre Dame would transition seamlessly to the SEC with his size and athleticism and would give the Cats a big, productive target over the middle. Basically, Chuck was going to be Jacob Tamme before Jacob Tamme was. Not surprisingly, my theory wasn’t so sound - or, at least Chuck doesn’t think so.  Here’s what he told NBA.com’s Sekou Smith:

“I hated going across the middle. I made my slant route look like a post route. And by the time my senior year rolled around I had more top notch colleges looking at me for basketball than I did for football. I made my decision right there.”

What Hayes didn’t account for, though, is that he’s Chuck Hayes. I still say he has a couple 1,000 yard seasons in him.

Yes, he was very good at catching the ball. He must have gotten his own rebound at least 1,000 times when he was at UK.

  2. ukwildcatwildfan Says:

    1) Wow, way to support one of the most committed, sincere players UK has had in recent years. Real classy.

  3. KSR Spy Says:

He was one of the most committed, sincere players UK has had period. It doesn’t change the fact that he missed a lot of shots and got his own rebound a lot of times. Doesn’t change the fact he is a great guy.

  4. GoCats2 Says:

1)yeah that is crap. He is exactly the type of player we should all dream of having. No offense to current players but I will take a 4 year player that works his butt off for the team over a one and done any day.
    Don’t mess with Chuck!

  5. UK-Believe Says:

can someone tell me what channel the Georgia game is on tomorrow?

  6. P.PattersonISwalkingthruthatdoor Says:

Patterson is a more athletic and better-shooting Chuck Hayes. And that is in NO way a slight towards Chuck.

  7. KSR Spy Says:

4)That isn’t crap he did get a lot of his own rebounds, haha. I am not insulting the man I am just stating a fact. No wonder KSR writers get so much crap. You people read way too much into things.

Typical Post: “Kentucky will be great this year…they may lose a game or two, but they will continue to grow”

Typical Fan Response: “OMFG UR AN IDIOT!! MATT JONES HASN’T FIRED YOU YET!?! OMFG!! KENTUCKY DOESN’T SUCK WE HAVE REALLY GOOD TALENT!! YOU DON’T EVEN KNOW WHAT THE FRICK YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT!! GO BACK TO THE LOSERVILLE BOARDS!!”

And we wonder why people think UK fans are idiots.

the name Chuck Hayes might as well be Chuck Norris. I bet Chuck Hayes could gargle Peanut Butter too

  10. the pen is mightier Says:

There has never been a sadder moment watching uk for me than watching chuck walk off the floor after that michigan st game. I love the guy.

That said, the rebound of the own shot doesn’t seem like an insult to me. Smart players understand rebounding angles, especially when shooting. Simple as that.

Also chuck hayes can kill two stones with one bird.

  11. UK_IceWaterSmooth Says:

Yeah. Why not pad the rebound stat sheet while padding the
    points too

By the way does anyone know what Erik Daniels is up to these days. I saw where he was playing for the Erie Bayhawks in the NBDL last year and doing pretty well but I can’t find anything about this year.
